Soyinka On My Feet Going Somewhere Opting For Isolation
'When I first came out -
I spoke just now about this need for human company,
but after I first came out,
I remember that after a few days
I just couldn't stand so much company.
It became too much again for me
and I couldn't wait until
I could go away
and isolate myself somewhere.'
did i not talk about
my wish to have wings
and be with you
sitting on a tree
and be with all of
you in the field of
ripe rice grains?
did i not think after
that i need to be
alone and wish
that i have fins
to be in the silence
of the depths
of the sea?
did i not wish at the
end that i have always
wanted simply to be
a stone to be thrown
to the face of another
person?
did i not wish simpy
to be under a handful
of stars without
any syllable in my tongue?

The End Of The World
Go if you want to
I never tried to stop you
Know there's a reason
For all of this you're feeling
Low, it's not my call
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Me - I don't show much
It's not that hard to hide you
See in a moment
I can't remember how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love...
You want me to cry and play my part
I want you to sigh and fall apart
We want this like everyone else
Stay if you want to
I always wait to hear you say
There's a last kiss
For all the times you run this way
It's not my fault
You couldn't ever love me more
You couldn't love me more
You couldn't love...
Love me more
Couldn't ever love me more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love
You want me to lie not break your heart
I want you to fly not stop and start
We want us like everything else
Maybe we didn't understand
Not just a boy and a girl
It's just the end of the
End of the world
Me - I don't say much
It's far too hard to make you
See in a moment
I still forget just how to
Be all you wanted
I couldn't ever love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more
I couldn't love you more

I Am The Resurrection
Down down you bring me down
I hear you knocking down my door
And I can't sleep at night
Your face it has no place
No room for you inside my house
I need to be alone
Don't waste your words I don't need
Anything from you
I don't care where you've been or
What you plan to do
Turn turn I wish you'd learn
There's a time and place for everything
I've got to get it through
Cut loose 'cause you're no use
I couldn't stand another
Second in your company
Don't waste your words
I don't need anything from you
I don't care where you've been or
What you plan to do
Stone me why can't you see
You're a no one nowhere washed up baby
Who'd look better dead
Your tongue is far too long
I don't like the way it sucks and
Slurs upon my every word
Don't waste your words
I don't need anything from you
I don't care where you've been or
What you plan to do
I am the resurrection and I am the life
I couldn't ever bring myself
To hate you as I'd like
I am the resurrection and I am the life
I couldn't ever bring myself
To hate you as I'd like

Early Morning Happiness....
this morning
i wake up early
i see this hen
and her sixteen chicks
roosting
upon a strong branch
of the narra tree
i get a handful of
rice grains
and scatter them on
the ground
the chickens fly down
from the tree
and feed on
the scattered grains

Told Me Then(fav!)
Why couldn't you ave have told me then...
I still remember the first day I saw you.
Your white tee and your bright blue gym shorts.
Our teams played soccer against each other.
You had to play on our team because you were just too great.
We used to Instant Message each other everyday.
Guitars, soccer, just bout every other thing.
We used to talk, we used to share, well we used to be.
Why couldn't you have told me then?
I regret many things I did, that weren't bout you,
But oh how they affected you and me.
There's a long long list of things I regret not telling you then.
Because if we didn't keep our secrets way back when,
I wouldn't have to think,
'Why couldn't you have told me then? '
I miss when you talked to me first.
I remember all those smiles when we used to talk.
I remember when you said 'Should I sing for a special girl? '
I can only imagine if you meant that for me.
Because imagining you and me is all it will ever be.
But if you ever realize that you don't just used to like me,
Aaron, please..you just tell me.
So I won't have to be thinking, wouldn't be wondering anymore,
Why couldn't you have told me then?
But until then, I'll sit back and wait.
Cuz you are worth any wait.
There's no one else on this earth whom I can more relate.
You're my soul mate, for goodness sake, maybe it's fate.
Why couldn't you have told me, you loved me, dreamed of me?
Why didn't you realize I'm falling for you from the highest height?
Why couldn't you have told me back then...
Because things could've been different.
We coulda been together.
We could be the best ever.
Aaron, why couldn't you see my obvious lovestruck face back then?
I hate endings with no beginnings..
But if you ever want to begin, you know I'll always be waiting.

Moonlit Day
I remember the moon staring back at us
I remember the stars holding our gaze
I remember the cool air that night
I remember warming you and holding you tight
I remember how it felt to finally be loved
I remember how I felt and what I couldn't stop
I remember the way you looked being lit by the night
I remember how fiery my passion became right then
I remember all the things that were
I remember all the things that couldn't have been
I remember all of this but it belongs to time's past
I remember everything and the feelings that wouldn't last
I remember most of all what I wanted to say
But it remains to another time
A time of a moonlit day

Bad Company
Company, always on the run
Destiny is the rising sun
I was born six gun in my hand
Behind the gun I make my final stand
That's why they call me
Bad company, I can't deny
Bad, bad company
'Til the day I die
Rebel soul, deserters we are called
Chose a gun and threw away the sword
Now these towns, they all know our names
Six gun sound is our claim to fame
I can hear 'em say
Bad company, and I won't deny
Bad, bad company
'Til the day I die

The corrupting view.
I spoke ill of her
As she was in others’ company.
I spoke nil of her
When she came to my friend’s company.
I spoke well of her
As I won her in my company.
Now I speak only of her
For now she is no more with others.
Jealousy to envy, envy to pride,
and pride to tranquility –
metamorphosis of feelings.

Seven Days
Seven days of anger
Seven days of fear
Seven days of pain
Seven days of misery
They tell me I am here,
But I am not.
They tell me I am a good person,
But yet I feel like I am a jerk.
Seven days I couldn't die
I couldn't die from anger
I couldn't die from fear
I couldn't die from pain
I couldn't die from misery
On the seventh day
I discover that,
all my anger, all my fears,
all my pain, all my misery
alll of it,
is just a dream.

I Want You
The last time that I saw her
Was the night she said goodbye
She said that love's a stranger
And it's sure to pass you by
As she packed up her belongings
She wouldn't look me in the eye
But I could see a tear roll
Off her face
As we both tried so hard
Not to cry she said
I never wanted the stars
Never shot for the moon
I like them right where they are
All I wanted was you
So baby just turn away
Because I can't face the truth
All I'm trying to say
Is all I wanted was you
I tried so hard to remember
When where how why love went away
I tried to drown myself in pity
But the whiskey kept calling your name
I bought you fancy cars and diamond rings
All the things that my money brings
And the servants to paint the sky blue
And I worked so hard seven days a week
And built a fortress for your heart to keep
If I could I'd wrap these words up for you
I never wanted the stars
Never shot for the moon
I like them right where they are
All I wanted was you
So baby just turn away
Because I can't face the truth
All I'm trying to say
Is all I wanted was you
I may have built for you a dreamhouse
But never thought you were alone
I filled the party up with company
But never made our house a home
All I got is my guitar

Heavenly Fathers' Day Forever
Assuming and that’s one hell of an assume
that we retain our individuality
you know.. up there..
you can’t but wonder what
they talk about, if of course
for instance, those millions
on millions of fathers..
do they gather round and talk
about.. well, forget that club talk
about their wives and
that kinda dissing that’s
a sorta boast…
and their daughters? no
they’d all go quiet and remember
when they were Daddy’s girl
hurrumph
no, their sons? ..
‘reckon he came from
his mother’s side
of the family – couldn’t never
understand him…’
‘wanted to give him the benefit
of all my experience –
would he listen? ’
‘everything I approved of..
he wanted the opposite, took
the opposite view.. couldn’t
talk to him about anything that
I’d learned to value..’
‘he just couldn’t understand
how fortunate he was.. I
grew up we had nothing nothing…’
‘he had a place waiting for him
in the family firm, great
future – but no, all
he wanted was to…’
‘I kept telling him, yes,
great as a hobby but
there’s no money in it son
for a decent life, take my word..’
‘paid a fortune for his education,
like I never had, and
what does he do with it but
go off and…’
do they go on and on like this? it
must be hell..
or are they allowed the benefit
of hindsight, a sorta
purgatory before oh god
another chance? or
or are they allowed a solemn vow
to never be like that again
and swear to make their son’s life
heaven? (poor wimp..)
or simply on the Indian lines of heavenly justice
swop roles next time ho ho?
Dad, all this
is just a joke
now
love you

Thursday to Sunday
On Thursday she told me she was leaving
she wanted to get out of my sight.
She didn’t want to waste words talking about it
no discussion would put things right.
She asked me to book a flight to England
where she would make a life on her own.
It was clear that I no longer figured in her life
and she certainly made it known.
For the rest of the day she never spoke to me
and tried to avoid me in every way.
She wouldn’t listen to any of my questions,
this was a silent treatment day.
I said that this was no way to be parting,
we should talk and reach a compromise,
but she threw reasoning back into my face,
slammed doors, and much more besides.
Her mood was set for the next two days,
she never once spoke a civil word.
I had accepted what seemed inevitable
even though I thought it absurd.
I sent emails and letters to friends and family,
explaining that we had come to an end,
she had decided to break up the partnership
and didn’t want to part as friends.
At three thirty on Sunday morning
she asked if I was awake.
I said I had just woken up at that moment,
but what was so urgent that couldn’t wait.
She wanted to say something important,
so I said say what you’ve got to say.
She was sorry for the way she spoke to me
and her words weren’t intended that way.
All she wanted was to be alone for a while
and to get away from the day to day stress.
She then whispered that she still loved me,
and could I forgive her this terrible mess.
For a few minutes I thought and said nothing.
She then said, “Well, is forgiveness in your heart?
I’m sorry that the words I said came out wrong,
I do love you and don’t want us to part.”
I explained the position that she had placed me,
and that I’d made plans for a life on my own.
I’d made the arrangements to live without her,
because she insisted on being alone.
“So that’s it, ” she said, “you can’t forgive me? ”
I said, “I couldn’t go through all this again.
What’s stopping you repeating the performance? ”
She said, “I won’t it’s caused us too much pain.”
Gently, she placed her arm around me,
and I thought hard and long.
I then turned and placed my arm around her
and said, “I hope my decision’s not wrong.”

A Tree in a Field
There once was a tree,
A tree alone in a field.
And as that tree grew
It got bigger than all 'round.
And people would often stop
Just to look at that tree,
That tree in a field.
Till one day one person,
Went and cut down that tree,
That tree in a field.
And you know what?
That tree learned one thing
Don't stand too tall too fast,
Or someone just might
Cut you down.

Mr. Radio
(written by Roderick Taylor)
Oh, what a sunny day
When they carried the radio home
Bringing him in off the truck
And the dogs wouldn't leave us alone
Mr. Radio, you come down here to keep us company
We listen in a room
Through the miles and miles of night
Deep in the heart of the Bible belt
In the golden radio light
Mr. Radio, you come down here to keep us company
And it's hard days out in the field
The crows in the high tree top
If a man's away from his home all day
His chickens might fall to the fox
Mr. Radio, what can you do about that?
Uh huh
And you can take me down to a river town
Where the citizens dance till dawn
They dance so close it's a sin almost
The way they carry on
Mr. Radio, I never dreamed you could
And it's miles at the careless touch
Of a tired hand in time
When evening fell I heard a strange sell
Dreams that were never mine
Mr. Radio, you come down here to keep us company
You come down here to keep us company

Patience, Patience
the child with a black coat
on this cold day
sits there beside a brick
church of spanish
architecture
the yard is quiet except
for the sound of the flapping
of doves feedind on some
rice grains
the boy has a black hair
and his feet are stained with
mud his fingers dirty with
some sticky sauce
he spreads the rice grains
from his palm to the
muddy grounds
the doves hover and land
on the spot where the grains
are freely spread
he sits with them
surrounded
the doves are watching him
and he watches carefully each
dove that eyes on his grains
he likes to snatch just one
to bring home to mother
the doves are too careful
it is just the rice grains nothing more
eye to eye
both wait for what shall happen next

In Between Dances
(craig bickhardt/barry alfonso)
Theres room at my table, why dont you pull up a seat
The musics inviting but Im staying off of my feet
The floors getting crowded, but I dont wanna take part
I bet you can guess its got something to do with my heart
I could sure use your company now
But dont be mistaking my smile
Im only in between dances
Sitting it out for a while
The partners are chosen, look at them waltzing away
The tempo gets slower, closer and closer they sway
Ive had my moments when I could get lost in the sound
But when the song ended the one in my arms let me down
I could sure use your company now
But dont be mistaking my smile
Im only in between dances
Sitting it out for a while
Have you been in my shoes
I search your eyes for signs
Will you remain, remember my name
After its closing time
I could sure use your company now
But dont be mistaking my smile
Im only in between dances
Sitting it out for a while
Im only in between dances
Sitting it out for a while

Lost in the World
He had come, a rebirth-like it was, reincarnated
He had seen all, heard all, witnessed all, and wondered
Couldn't believe, couldn't, comprehend.
He had seen them talk to themselves,
Gadgets in ears, they talk to themselves,
They box the air and talk to themselves,
He had tried to; persuade, to drive sense into them
In air his, voice had gone, could not a waken them
Whatever they were, all these seemed to belong to them
He had, gone for the cattle shed, not there but, a sky- scrapper
He had, gone for the stick granaries, not there, but, a sky crapper
He had, looked for his hut and his brothers', all, skyscrapers, skyscrapers.
He yelled, they couldn't hear, they hurried on,
Their black paths, with moving boxes on wheels, on and on
Up the stars, he flew, dejected, unceremoniously, on.

State Of Grace
So strange
It's funny how
We came to meet
Those eyes uncanny
Were my invitation
I couldn't wait
I couldn't wait
To hold you like a baby
Is this what it feels like
You are here now
Oh but I
Can't seem to find our state of grace
Who knows tomorrow may never come
One touch

Stay For A While
Long time since Ive seen your smile,
But when I close my eyes,
I remember
You were no more than a child,
But then so was i,
Young and tender.
Time carries on;
I guess it always will,
But deep inside my heart
Time stands still.
Stay for awhile.
Well, its good to see your smile,
And I love your company.
Stay for awhile.
And remember the days gone by;
For a moment it can seem
Just the way it used to be.
Snowfalls, phone calls, broken hearts,
Clear summer days,
Warm and lazy;
Long walks, long talks, after dark;
We vowed wed never forget.
Now its hazy.
Time takes its toll,
And time alters our view.
It would be nice to
Spend some time with you.
Oh, stay for awhile.
Well, its good to see your smile,
And I love your company.
(oohhh) stay for awhile.
And remember the days gone by;
For a moment it can seem
Just the way it used to be.
Stay....
(please stay.)
Stay, stay, stay....
One, two, one, two.
Stay for awhile.
Well, its good to see your smile,
And I love your company.
(oohhh) stay for awhile.
And remember the days gone by;
Just the way it used to be.
Stay for awhile.
Oh, its good to see your smile,
And I love your company.
Wont you stay with me for awhile,
And remember the days gone by;
For a moment it can seem
Just the way it used to be.
(the way it used to be. be.......
The way it used to be, ooohhhh, aaaahhhhhh. ooooooooooooooh.
Now, now, now, now.... hoohhhhhh....)

Love is a one-winged bird
I thought us as a problem
that was simply
too big to solve
but that wasn't it
at all
There is sadness in
how simple
our story was
I was your conditional love
Only on some days
Only when it was better for you
Only when you grew tired
of skirt chasing
you could always find me waiting
I shredded pieces of my pride
to make room inside myself
to love you
I exchanged dignity for intimacy
And in return you loved me conditionally
On the days I looked pretty
or when I spoke eloquently
not when I was clumsy
and undone
I wrote of you
so many times
I'd read a poem
and you'd nod in some sort of
gratified way
"It's good" you'd always say
But I never wanted your opinion
I just wanted you to listen
there were questions
and delicate hints
in those words
and they were all for you
Your truth had an ugly way
of revealing its honesty
And in the simplest arrangement of words
You
hurt
me
But heartbreak is commonplace
for people like me
And to tell you the truth
I've fallen in love so many times
that it's begun to feel ordinary
You never told me
how you felt
You never let your lips speak for your heart
You locked secrets
behind your teeth
And your tongue was the gatekeeper
for all the things you could never say to me
And every afternoon
I'd watch the light
pour through the tiny window in your room
wait for you to wake up
and hope that maybe tomorrow
I wouldn't love you
but my heart is far too big
and my biggest flaw is that
I don't know when to let someone go
I think
I am letting
you go
As in you can leave
I'm setting you free
just in time for Autumn
we couldn't survive
all four seasons
and you couldn't stop biting
the loving hand that fed you
So now
you can
starve
