One Day, One Day
one day the voices will leave you
you have long asked them to go
and you will be all alone and you will sip silence slowly
one day you will say you are at last free
the vexations all gone with departures
at first you get relieved and being new to this situation
you open the door and run to the yard to play
you become a child again riding on the swing
you stretch your hands and waive to the trees
you remove your shoes and feel the grass on your feet
one day you become naked
you have been dreaming of this all the days of your life
one day you soak yourself to the salt of the sea
and tan yourself with all the sun you can take
one day you will find nothing significant in these changes
you want to give all these up
you press some numbers on the cell phone
you want to go back to the sound of the voices of your home
one day you will realize you are nothing but a deep longing
an empty space an absence wanting some presence
one day you call each of them you want them all back
you bend you beg you implore for some more
the vexations and the whispers and the screams
for they have long defined you and have become a part of all of them
one day you confess you belong to them and have identified with them
without them you are incomplete you have no meaning.
one day you will embrace all of them, pain as brothers, sadness as kins
one day you become so true you become whole again

Physical Presence
I leave as I enter
another boy caught in-between
now all I can muster
are whispers to your screams
don't you remember
how you eased my disgrace
don't you remember
the love you saw in my face
perfected in silence
a physical presence
perfected in silence
a physical presence
I sought affection
but now I realize
a cold rejection
the movement in your eyes
but I can remember
when you shook against me
I can remember
when I saw what love could be
perfected in silence
a physical presence
perfected in silence
a physical presence
ain't what she did
it's the way that she did it
when I couldn't give
only she could forgive it
ain't what she did
it's the way that she did it
as long as I live
it's for me to re-live it . . .
silence . . .
part of the answer
is that there's really no escape
part of the answer
is that life can have such perfect shape
don't you remember

Summer Stars
Do you remember the time when you and i were fine
hiding under the apple tree there was no one but you and me
we would hide from passing cars and we would have the summer stars
and we were better then then we'd ever been before
you came back to me after walking out my door
you would call me on the phone before you even got home
without me you said you were all alone
the cold wind that blows all the things i used to know
how could it play so fast never thought you'd be part of my past
would i trade it all again to get you out of my head?
cause we were better then then we'd ever been before
you came back to me after walking out my door
you would call me on the phone before you even got home
without me you said you were all alone
alone
without me by your side
you said you were all alone
give me one more chance
to prove myself to you
all the little things that i long to do
...(when you run away)
would you trade the course
...(you said that you'd be)
so that i could hold you
...(coming out my front porch)
would it all go away
...(just to see me)
and my heart is breaking
would you hear me baby
as the tears are longing
for what it used to be

Until I Find You Back
i am attuned to silence. get used to sadness.
learned to take a walk alone. no one is here.
and no one will be there to meet me
at the edge of this longing.
i get used to other people leaving.
amused sometimes at your coming.
i also celebrate with some things
that stay. but i am always prepared to face
the sorrows of departures. i leave too
without looking back at the door. i also
fear turning my body into salt.
i too have some regrets.
and wishes, and i too learned the need
to hope.
but this time, without you
i am giving up everything in me.
until i find you back, i will be lost.
until i see you, these eyes shall be blind.
this is our picture.

The Voices Are Back
He saw flames in the department store
He tried to get the people to the safety of the door
There was no fire the voices were telling him what to do
You could see from his face he needs someone
To help pull him through
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do
Ripping through the fabric between his world and the real
Hes trying to protect you but
The knife will know that your flesh meets steel
Took him to an institution
And they helped the voices go away
But he didnt have the right set of papers
So they put this boy in jail
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do
Six weeks turned to twelve
He was locked up for twenty-three hours a day
The warden found him in his cell
His only crime was that he was ill
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do
The voices are back theyre telling him what to do

The Death That Perfects Me
i like the way you show your back to me
i see you and you do not see me
that is the principle of my secret.
my world changes when you face me
in your being disinterested
nothing matters
i do not wish for more,
i do not need some stars
in my heavens.
my gaze to you is enough as
i go home again
incomplete,
like two hands opening to the sky
asking for light
or even rain and nothing
comes
to fill what my palms are longing
i close my hands again to cover
my face in shame.
For i have not changed.
No matter how,
i will never change.
i am this child and
i am the father of this man.
in my old age,
i am still my own child
the child whose mouth not any milk from any mother
can satiate
it is written in the skies
my name.
It is the name of dissatisfaction
and it wants to have a body
which must be reborn
until it finds what it has been searching
where is true love?
have you found it?
if sometime i find it,
that when i kiss i am also kissed back
when my fire is burned by another fire
when all of me is a forest
and consumed by wild fire
what can i ask?
i will not ask even for a dropp of rain
or a pinch of salt
or a syllable for understanding
i have enough.
But i do not have it now.
I know what is enough.
I have long defined it
in my series of deaths.
i know when it comes,
i can recognize completely its face
when it arrives.
when i hold it, i shall die
but i shall not
ask to be born again.
for by that time,
i am rested as a stone
beside a hill
i do not wish to be rolled again
neither shall i ask
Sisyphus to put me back to that same
place on top
for by that time
i am dead and so complete.

Back Where You Belong
Ooh Ive been down there a million times
If Ive been down before
Never thought Id hurt so bad
To see you play the fool
Never mountain high enough
I said and I watched you climb
Till the day I saw you walk out of your life and mine
So Im gonna leave you just because I want you
Back where you belong
Gonna make you see just what youve doing to me
Back where you belong
Be home right by my side is where you want to be
Back where you belong
Standing in the shadows
Watch your never-ending flight
Just how high as high to be before you see the light
Will this be the change you need to show you who you are
I love you but Ill leave you just to prove youve gone too far
Soon Im gonna leave you just because I want you
Back where you belong
Gonna make you see just what youve doing to me
Back where you belong
Be home right by my side is where you want to be
Back where you belong
Cant you see youre losing me using me
Back where you belong
Heaven knows I love you will this make you see
Back where you belong
So Im gonna leave you just because I want you
Back where you belong
Gonna make you see just what youve doing to me
Back where you belong
Be home right by my side is where you want to be
Back where you belong
Dont you understand my feelings and
Set me free
Dont you realize it...

She Is Looking For The Simplicity Of You
she is looking for nothing but the simplicity
of the sea
the plain salt in water
you may even remove the bluish part of it
she is expecting nothing in the landscape
but only the grass on the hills
you may remove the house nearby
and the running brook
the moon at night need not even be there
the star can be dispensed with
you may only give her the darkness and the silence
of the grass and the hills
she is looking for nothing except that you
the one she loves must be there tonight
you may even dispense with the body
the hands and the face and the thighs
you may take them all away from her
she needs only the presence of your words
or even if you take the last word that you cannot give
you leave her the sigh unspoken by you
that will still suffice
she loves you and it is enough for her to last for another day

On Being Here Back To You
time stole you away from me
a long, long time ago
when i confessed
my love to you
when i have defined what love is
and its possibilities
its consequences
the face i want to caress
the body i want to hold
the tongue i want to taste
the lips i want to kiss
you left, i bleed
i have defined pain
and enumerated the hurt
long in my list
my sighs reverberated
in the halls of my
loneliness
now i am back
to you
looking at you
again after a long, long time
when you left me
what do i see?
what do i feel?
i feel nothing now
i have not seen you
i will move on to the next
door of my life
i will open it
to find myself and perhaps
someone else, who knows?

We Are One
You are not alone and how long can you run
Its much to late if you dont know what youve got til its gone
Once upon a time you were a child but that was yesterday
Believed that magic in your heart would never fade away
But hold your head up high and let your spirits fly
Keep hope alive yes deep inside and your dreams will never die
We are one
Everywhere I go, everyone I see
And I see my face looking back at me
We are one
Everything I know, what I know is true
Everyone of us is inside of you
We are one
We are one
Oooh take a breath, close your eyes youre on the road again
And then you realize theyve brought you back to life again
Somethings never change but if you fantasize
Youll feel it deep inside yourself and then youll realize
When you feel it coming
When you hear the sound
Youll always laugh when you wanna cry
And then youll know it deep inside
We are one
Everywhere I go, everyone I see
And I see my face looking back at me
We are one
Everything I know, what I know is true
Everyone of us is inside of you
We are one
We are one
You are me, I am you
What you see, is all true
(its all true)
You are me, I am you
What you see, is all true
(its all true)
You are me, I am you
(we are one)
What you see, is all true
(I am you) (we are one) (its all true)
You are me, I am you
(we are one)
What you see, is all true
(we are one)
We are one
Everywhere I go, everyone I see
And I see my face looking back at me
We are one
Everything I know, what I know is true
Everyone of us is inside of you
We are one
We are one

On the Way.
(- what follows is a true story. more a story than a poem. yet, one I have so wanted for so long to tell... -)
On the way
Southbound far into Texas.
It's a long stretch of asphalt,
When the night is late, and so dark
Out on highway 277, moving
From Sonora to Del Rio... and points further south.
Not another soul about,
Just me, my old truck, and the stars.
It's quiet
- and lonely -
Headed down old Mexico way...
Pass a car sitting on the side
- broke down I'm sure -
A coyote with fear and hunger in its eyes
Runs across the road, right in front of me.
Then, a mile or so up, I see him, walking,
Gas can in hand.
I stop, open the door and holler:
' need a lift? '
He simply says: ' gracias ' and climbs aboard.
I pull back out onto the empty road,
Start a conversation,
He smiles, and with very broken English
Does his best to respond.
It takes a spell but I soon understand
He is on his way to Mexico too,
- it is the old homeland for him -
His car ran out of gas,
And most important of all
His wife who is pregnant awaits his return...
in the car!
I offer to go back to get her.
He softly says no... he must get the gas.
The way he speaks, the way he moves,
Lends me to know, this is a gentle, hard-working man
- with a heart as big, and old, as all of Mexico -
More difficult conversation follows,
But, it is so well worth the effort;
I can't say quite why
But I have quickly grown to like and respect this good, simple man
- as if an amigo I've known from old -
He came north to find work,
Provide for his family.
I went south for rest,
And to find meaning.
But, things never work out exactly as planned.
They decided it important to have their nino
- so soon due -
In Mexico, among family, grandparents and such
- this is ofcourse as it should be -
They have little money,
And no friends up here;
If only they can make it back
To Old-Mexico.
Together, me and my new found friend,
Drive deep into the night,
Not once seeing another car.
It's a long, desolate way to a town
With an open gas station.
I am glad for the company of such an honest soul.
He is glad for the ride.
Twice along the journey we see a falling star
- 'good medicine' my red brothers would say -
One for him, and one for me.
Finally a station with lights aglow comes into view.
As we stop, he offers me a dollar
From the small stash of bills he has waded up in his pocket.
I ofcourse refuse,
And offer him much more in return
- ' a gift for the new baby ' I happily say -
or, gas money to get you home.
He smiles, sincerely thanks me,
And gently, proudly refuses.
- I wish he'd take it, I so want to give it -
I tell him I'll wait
And give him a ride back;
I think he feels he has burdened me too much already;
Ofcourse he has not at all,
This ride has been as much for me,
As for him
- God knows -
But, he insists someone here will give him a return ride.
I cannot change his resolute mind.
So, I wish him all the best,
Feeling I should say, and do,
Something more...
But I don't know what;
We shake hands
- and for just a brief moment of grace
we are hermanos, brothers of light in a dark world -
He closes the door.
Turns, with can in hand,
And slowly walks away...
On his own way, back to Old-Mexico.
I pull out onto the road.
The trip is now lonlier than ever.
In my own way, I too
Am on the way,
Back home
- to an old country, where I belong -
It's been nearly 30 years now,
I think of him often.
I wonder if he ever recalls me at all.
I wish I'd have gotten his name
...so I knew who to pray for...
I wish he'd have taken the money
...so his wife would have had enough to eat...
I wish I'd have given him the ride back
...so I knew they were safe...
I wonder how they are.
Did he find work?
Did he get caught up in revolution?
Is he still alive?
Was their child a boy or a girl?
- now a man or a woman -
I'm certain I shall never see him again,
in this world,
Yet, what if someday, by some great chance,
His child and my child should cross paths... along the way,
Fully unaware of the history of it all?
What if somewhere
On a lonley, dark desert night
His child gives my child a ride;
A ride that perhaps
- in ways unknown to any of us -
Saves them... saves us all...
What a deep mystery life is.
Could it possibly be
That every little deed we do,
On our way through,
To wherever it is we go,
Matters in ways
We may never, here, know?
- may we all find the Way,
on our way -

Buried Between two Trees
Back home again
in the yard
I used to play in
So many memories here
of days long ago
for memories, I hold dear
Saw the grave of old shep
the dog I loved so
in this yard, he followed me every step
He's buried between two trees you see
buried him in my brand new quilt
and my mother was really mad at me
In this yard, I would bathe him
many years before
his old eyes grew dim
His bed layed by the cellar door
with tall trees, all around him
oh memories, of the dog I adored
Memories of the time
that the meter man came
he hit old shep, that wasn't very kind
This old yard, was all shep had
he guarded it with his life
when he died, I was very sad
This old yard, now has in it,
a lot of beautiful flowers, all round
between two trees, he wouldn't mind a bit.
Waiting at the Door
I can’t explain so deep inside
The very fabric of my soul
Only a heart that grieves such loss
Can ever truly understand
It’s like you’re waiting at the door
Until a loved one comes back home
You feel a longing in your heart
When they appear the longing stops
But in a loss that never ends
You’re always standing at that door
You feel the longing in the breeze
So incomplete and never filled
I cannot find the words to say
Just what it’s like to want forever
Never seeing them again
Just always waiting at the door

New York
In New York freedom looks like
Too many choices
In New York I found a friend
To drown out the other voices
Voices on a cell phone
Voices from home
Voices of the hard sell
Voices down a stairwell
In New York
Just got a place in New York
In New York summers get hot
Well into the hundreds
You can walk around the block
Without a change of clothing
Hot as a hair dryer in your face
Hot as a handbag and a can of mace
New York
I just got a place in New York
New York

Life's Acceptance
All grown up, scared out of my wits.
Nothing seems normal, nothing fits.
No mother to nurture or feed me now.
Thrown into a world that the fates allow.
Can't turn back, must move ahead.
I find myself sobbing in my bed.
I awaken to find myself alone.
I call my mother on the phone.
The phone is busy. I end the call.
I feel as if I've hit a wall.
Such is the feeling of leaving home.
Such is the feeling within this poem.
I've come a long way and now look back.
I remember with fondness my faithful act
of never surrendering my childish ways.
They helped me make it through these days.
I don't fear anything I must face.
I welcome it all with a warm embrace.

Dreaming As The Tears Fall.
Dreaming of happy days.
Dreaming of that longing gaze.
Dreaming of that perfect embrace.
I'm dreaming of love always.
The greatest gift one could give.
Loneliness speaks of my weakness.
Vulnerabilities open like a wound so sore.
A tear dropp falls forevermore.
Dreaming of happy days.
Dreaming of that longing gaze.
Dreaming of that perfect embrace.
I'm dreaming of love always.
The greatest gift one could give.
I feel so abandon by everyone.
I feel like no one cares.
I feel, I feel, I feel so much pain.
Please tell me why I am still here.
A purpose should never disappear.
Dreaming of happy days.
Dreaming of that longing gaze.
Dreaming of that perfect embrace.
I'm dreaming of love always.
The greatest gift one could give.
Loneliness speaks of my weakness.

Dreaming of happy days.
Dreaming of that longing gaze.
Dreaming of that perfect embrace.
I'm dreaming of love always.
The greatest gift one could give.
I remember the past so vividly.
But still it isn't now.
A singled out cloud.
The sun is burning him out.
Oh how he wishes darkness would surround.
Dreaming of happy days.
Dreaming of that longing gaze.
Dreaming of that perfect embrace.
I'm dreaming of love always.
The greatest gift one could give.
Loneliness speaks of my weakness.

Not Just Sometimes But Always
There is a long forgotten voice
I know it's not your voice, cause it's always strained
I wake up hearing unfamiliar voices
Convinced they're trying to explain
That if my words were clearer
Then maybe I would know what I'm trying to say
Just as those long forgotten voices
Disappear back into rain
If I was born the same day that you died
Should that make me try
I was born the same day that you died
Should that make me feel more alive
Not just sometimes but always
I know what I know
I know what I know
I know what I know
I tune the radio to drown out these voices I don't know
I'm suddenly an empty house, that almost fills up with home
There are days and nights, when I don't need to close my eyes
And they feel as real to me like analogy in disguise
If I was born the same day that you died
Should that make me try
I was born the same day that you died
Should that make me feel more alive
Not just sometimes but always
I know what I know
I know what I know
I know what I know
Not just sometimes but always
I know what I know
I know what I know
I know what I know

To Marcy
just this afternoon as i drive my car
back home from the office
as usual, i see you too walk alone
the sidewalk of the mall
your shoulder droops and there
are wrinkles on your forehead
you look on the path and never look back
neither do you look forward
it is just looking down perhaps finding
your own way of taking the silence
your hands are empty still
slowly, you take the sorrows
sipping what sadness is left
in the air
i accelerated the car not wanting to see some more
of you
not wanting to see more of myself too
in you
we're inside the same world
love inside a vacuum

Escaping Childhood
Another scream, finds my ears
Thundering booms, as doors are slammed
'Welcome to the mad house'
I say, silently
As not to wake, the voices inside
I lay still, in hope, the voices
Won't find me
A tear of regret
Relentlessly, falls from my cheek
As I long for, the good ole days
The sound of my single tear
Hitting my pillow
Wake the voices
My soul, tries to escape
This maze in my mind
To many voices to evade
I lose myself to the voices
Again
I can see
But I have no say
My life is not my own
I'm trapped
Behind a wall of hurt and pain
Still, the voices are in control
I beg for relief
But they laugh
And mock me
Unable to stop them
I surrender, completely
They win, again
As I lose
Never, do I wish
I was someone else
All I wish, is to be myself

Angel
girl it's been so long
since i held you in my arms
so i picked up pen and paper
and decided to write you a song
things just ain't the same
since you took your love away
all i have is dark and lonely days
cause the sun don't shine my way
wish that i could find the words to say
to show you love is real
the words just can't express the way i feel
[chorus]
you're my angel
my sun up in the sky
we've been through hell and back together
why you wanna leave me now
only you can ease the pain i feel
and wipe my tears away
won't you fly back home and make me whole again
baby not a day goes bye
that i don't want to cry
when i think of what we had
how you walked out of my life
all i had was yours to take
till my heart you chose to break
still wish that i could make love to you
just one more time for old times sake
if only i could find the words to say
to show you love is real
the words just can't express the way i feel
[chorus]
you're my angel
my sun up in the sky
we've been through hell and back together
why you wanna leave me now
only you can ease the pain i feel
and wipe my tears away
won't you fly back home and make me feel whole again
come back home
come back home
cause without you here beside me
my house is not a home
only you can ease the pain i feel
and wipe my tears away
won't you fly back home and make me whole again
you're my angel
my sun up in the sky
we've been through hell and back together
why you wanna leave me now
only you can ease the pain i feel
and wipe my tears away
won't you fly back home and make me whole again
you're my angel
my sun up in the sky
we've been through hell and back together
why you wanna leave me now
only you can ease the pain i feel
and wipe my tears away
you've been gone too long so won't you come back home
