Notes 1

we are but
dusts in the wind
blown in an
instant
far and gone

we are but
the pebbles the sands
on the shore

we are but waves
coming and going
always
recurring

Pre-Existence

I laid me down upon the shore
And dreamed a little space;
I heard the great waves break and roar;
The sun was on my face.

My idle hands and fingers brown
Played with the pebbles grey;
The waves came up, the waves went down,
Most thundering and gay.

The pebbles, they were smooth and round
And warm upon my hands,
Like little people I had found
Sitting among the sands.

The grains of sands so shining-small
Soft through my fingers ran;
The sun shone down upon it all,
And so my dream began:

How all of this had been before;
How ages far away
I lay on some forgotten shore
As here I lie to-day.

The waves came shining up the sands,
As here to-day they shine;
And in my pre-pelasgian hands
The sand was warm and fine.

I have forgotten whence I came,
Or what my home might be,
Or by what strange and savage name
I called that thundering sea.

I only know the sun shone down
As still it shines to-day,
And in my fingers long and brown
The little pebbles lay.

This Is Only The Beginning

when steps proceed to
another journey making marks on the shore
the sands are not without understanding
what is happening to the waves
and the pebbles
the waves arrive on an infinite
folding and unfolding
on such a monotonous acrobatic
of foam and air
and hush and push
coming back and going away
i have the courage to say
well, what could all these be
but always beginnings...i have not seen
any ending at all, where?

Pain

Like an uninvited
Wind, building strength
Gathering more winds
To make a storm

Pain comes not like
A tear dropping
Pain comes in waves
In flood

But I am a very wide
Shore of sands
And paths of pebbles

But I am the sky and
Empty Space

No pain contains me
No pain destroys me
i am always unfilled.

Waves And Foams On My Feet (revised)

when my feet step on the sands
and pebbles of the shore
i feel the life
stood upon by my whole body
when the waves
come and go like a pendulum on
my legs
leaving some sea caps
and foam on the hair
i begin to understand
who i am,
arriving and yet not staying
going away and yet coming back
in a matter of time
between storms and
clear days, and i agree with
the seagulls singing about life
and fading in a distance

Fragments (2)

I see fragments
Of memories
Scattered in the floor
Of our past
I am bound
And my hands are dying
I am muted
By bitterness and pain
I am a broken bone
My heart is maimed
My mind is floating
Like clouds drifting
I see fragments
I see leaves
Blown by the wind
I can do nothing
I see dusts
The wind has come
And everything
Is blown away
I see emptiness
I hear nothing
I am here.

To A Young Man On His Maiden Voyage At Poetry

i am confronted with a very long
and wide shore
filled with sands and pebbles
though the waves are gentle
and the clouds so blue
and the far horizon as peaceful
like a line drawn by a pen
on a piece of yellow paper

everything seems very familiar
nothing new
except you little blue bird
chirping and i am amazed

you are more beautiful
than the rest.

One Hundred Ripples

One hundred ripples I mark today
One hundred steps along my way

One hundred steps lead to the pond
One hundred trees there do surround

One hundred birds nesting among the trees
One hundred bees filling the air with these

One hundred bees buzzing about in the air
One hundred flowers are pollinating there

One hundred flowers provide the aromas sweet
For one hundred bouquets given to lovers as treat

One hundred lovers walk the winding pathway
One hundred times to find romance there each day

One hundred times they will reach to explore
One hundred pebbles found along the pond shore

One hundred pebbles carry wishes through the air
One hundred ripples on surface creating there

One hundred ripples then spreading out will begin
One hundred waves soon lapping at the shore again

One hundred waves providing the means for
One hundred more pebbles to reach the shore

One hundred pebbles scatter along the pathway
One hundred steps retraced at the end of the day

One hundred small steps... this latest poem was conceived to denote
One hundred little ripples... spreading from 100 poems I wrote

The Ocean

1969 live version
--------------------------------------------
Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the shore
Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the sea
Earth is a hollow hair bought of a bigger head
It nearly drives me crazy
I am a lazy son
I never get things down
...(unknown)
But here comes the waves
Down by the shore
Washing the eye of the land
That has been down by the sea
Down by the sea
Down by the sea
Down by the sea
Here comes the ocean and the waves
Down by the shore
Here comes the ocean and the waves
Down by the sea
(incense or in sex or insects) for evil thoughts, thought of by selfish men
It nearly drives me crazy
I am a lazy son
I never get things done
...(unknown)
Here comes the waves down by the shore
Washing the eye of the land that has been down by the sea
Down by the sea
Here come the waves
Here come the waves
Here come the waves
Peel slowly and see version
---------------------------------------------
Here comes the ocean
And the waves
Down by the sea
Here comes the ocean
And the waves
Where have they been?
Silver and black with night
Heres to a summers night
An empty splendid castle
Glowering alone at night
The princess has had a fright
Madness seeks out the lover
And here come the waves down by the shore
Washing the soul of the body
That comes from the depths of the sea
Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the sea
Here comes the ocean
And the waves, where have they been
Dont swim tonight my love
The tide is out my love
Malcoms curse haunts our family
Oh yes, loud in which, ruler of filthy seas, revelling heavans justice
And here come the waves
And save for a scream
Theres much like a song
To be heard, in the wind, that blows by the sea.
Like the wind
Here come the waves,
Here come the waves,
Here come the waves

* * *

in this life
there will be more questions than answers
everything seems to start with a what
followed up with when
and where but the most intriguing of course,
that which is unquenchable
that which demands the intervention of some
divinification
is the.....why?

so it is common: why me? why me?
why this? why did this happen to me?

fly to this world like a bird and gather the leaves
of whys
or just see them
they are like dusts, like sands of the shore, they are like
the particles in space, some meteors that they shoot
some planets unrevealed
some other galaxies unknown to us,

why? why?
it goes back again to why, it is true, this world is filled more
with questions
and the answers are getting less and less credible,
somehow others have given up the quest for answers
drowning in wine
and drugged themselves to this puzzle, this confusion,
this unknowables,

it is true, there must be a reason why,
we demand an explanation for the whys in our lives,
but then think somehow,

who are we to ask why?
we must go back to the basics of what, again for another start.

what are we? who are we?
we are but specks of light in the ocean of space
we are but the pebbles of the great rock
we are but fine granules of sand in the shore of this great universe.

i, think, let us be humble enough
to bow our heads, then look to the skies with awe and wonder,

then wait for a while
till the right when comes, then let us ask, why?

Robert Frost

Once by the Pacific

The shattered water made a misty din.
Great waves looked over others coming in,
And thought of doing something to the shore
That water never did to land before.
The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,
Like locks blown forward in the gleam of eyes.
You could not tell, and yet it looked as if
The shore was lucky in being backed by cliff,
The cliff in being backed by continent;
It looked as if a night of dark intent
Was coming, and not only a night, an age.
Someone had better be prepared for rage.
There would be more than ocean-water broken
Before God's last Put out the light was spoken.

A View

driftwood
with seven twigs
on the shore
as clear as glass
is the water
and all stones and pebbles
are visible

above
blue skies
so blue that the white cotton clouds
appear like sperm cells moving
impregnating
an earth-sky womb

and then
it rains
the water rises
the drift wood again taken
floating
gently to another shore
another island
of white sands

a coconut tree towers
to reach a waft of cloud
winds as cool as ice
sands slipping on the fingers
a leaf from a guyabano tree falls
on the mouth
of a sleeping woman
beside her
the man whose arms are enclosing
her throughout
the rainy night

Men, the waves

The sea waves meet the shore.
The waves ebb; the shore stays ashore.
He, the wave, meets her, the shore.
The waves carry the carcass of the tryst.
The shore buries the debris of the tryst.
Man sticks to the past, woman to the future.

Observations Of The Man With A Broken Heart Spending Summer In A Getaway Beach

mother finally decided
to transfer his son to another
school in the busy city
there was something that she saw
and she did not like it

the son knows it
but like her says nothing about it
all the people saw it
but no one dares to mention it

taboos are silent pebbles
gritting to the coldness of the waves
not hurting to the eyes
but the ears are intolerant

it is during summer
that the pebbles begin to wear their angry eyes
the sands borrow the glitter of diamonds
the air is humid like a frigid woman

the trees shed off leaves
and grasses begin to wilt
the sea in its silence
has told more stories than the babbling kid

Ashore, ashore with the tide’s flow

Ashore, ashore with the tide’s flow
As in a sack some thing washed in:
And lay amidst the shells
And pebbles of the shore
Amidst the lapping of the waters rude
And the sea-waves’ roar.

Ashore, ashore with the tide’s flow
The sea-waves washed her in
One eye was closed the other open
And on her golden hair
Were drops of red:
Wild lapped the sea-waves and the cloud
Frowned on the sea-shore
Amidst the lapping of the waters rude
And the sea-waves’ roar.

How many winters rude have skimmed
Their frozen fingers on the white breast
Of the pale moon-lit lake a-dreaming sound
How many a Spring of green
Has come and gone:
Since that ashore, ashore with the tide’s flow
The sea-waves washed her in
Her clothes that rich were tattered were
Unseemly with the smoke of cigars
And the drunk smell of alcohol
Her look was wild and sad and raw:
Wild lapped the sea-waves and the cloud
Frowned on the sea-shore
Amidst the lapping of the waters rude
And the sea-waves’ roar.

Collecting Pebbles

It was from the sands of a windswept beach
I picked up pebbles that were easy to reach.
They had attracted my attention while walking by
their coloured well formed shape caught the eye.

There were so many to choose from I had to decide
in selecting those which my fancy would coincide.
It’s truly amazing what some people see in stone
a subject in which a lot of our imagination is prone.

It was almost as if I’d found treasure on the seashore
and couldn’t help myself as I looked around for more.
The simple joy of collecting something that attracts the mind
is an age old activity which all people do have of some kind.

There were the questions of how many would I take
and what, if anything with them, one could make?
They were so abundant and all varied mostly in size
that it wasn’t hard to imagine an object or visualize.

It was also only the first location at which I found
that I thought surely there must be others around.
So with a sense of adventure I looked forward to explore
another beach while making my way home along the shore.

There were several other stops made further on the way
collecting various coloured pebbles amidst the sea spray.
Many times would I get my sandals wet along that coast
going amongst rocks and sand to the waters edge at most.

It was with a sense of gain and loss then after I’d taken enough
deciding right there and then to stop collecting which was tough.
The next step would be to think about and see what I would do
with all those beautiful pebbles gathered while passing through.

Maybe I could approach someone with the right flair and skill
who could make something with them and imagination fulfill.
That natural forming eroding action of water, ice, wind and sand
rarely requires the finishing touches of some other skillful hand.

Perhaps in fashioning some jewellery using metal to bind
a few pebbles together that are different or a similar kind.
Or maybe I could just keep some myself and give the rest away
a gesture of friendship toward which our memories would play.

Yes it was from the sands of many a windswept lonely beach
I came accross and collected pebbles that were within reach.
Isn’t it truly amazing what some people see in stone?
a subject in which much of our imagination is prone.

4: 39 A.m.

the strong wind keeps on blowing
howling
above the house and the trees bending
in different directions

there is this sound of tin roofs
about to be blown away
i hear them
and feel the fury
of someone
coming

to the mind of my wife
it is nothing
but a typhoon coming
on schedule
as predicted by the weather bureau
yesterday

and to her
i am just overdoing thoughts
and things
playing always
the role of the poet
even when
the wind is the wind
and nothing
but the wind

and nothing else

William Blake

Mock On, Mock On, Voltaire, Rousseau

Mock on, mock on, Voltaire, Rousseau;
Mock on, mock on; 'tis all in vain!
You throw the sand against the wind,
And the wind blows it back again.
And every sand becomes a gem
Reflected in the beams divine;
Blown back they blind the mocking eye,
But still in Israel's paths they shine.

The Atoms of Democritus
And Newton's Particles of Light
Are sands upon the Red Sea shore,
Where Israel's tents do shine so bright.

Epiphany

Outside the surge of the wind, the wind in the trees,
The rush of leaves, and the sighing in the pine-needles,
Outside the sound of the sea-shore, distant, remembered,
The waves breaking on the gray rocks, and the evening approaching,
The restlessness, and the interminable noise.

Silence in the room, and solitude,
A sense of spaces, remoteness and nearness, and the soul's awareness,

Desolate is the hearts desire
And the loving knows no end,
When the morning in the clouds breaks across the sky,
And the forests sway and bend.

Outside the wind, the wind in the trees,
And the sighing in the tree-tops.

Noises from the town, heedless, unthinking, indistinct,
Recurring, fading,
And silence in the room, and solitude,
The shadowy dimness, the darkness of evening,
A pause in time, and the soul's awareness.
