I Like To Write Like Gary Soto
well, today, i like to write like
gary soto and his cotton lines
the man next door with a hoe
and ticket and dream of food
and little children on his lap
in his home after hours of
work under some masters
i like to write like gary soto
on his hitchhike to san francisco
with the migratory birds and
the waters from the danals
dragging him to a richer town
but it is so sad, i can't be gary
or any other sordid soto,
i guess i may not be so dumb
but i am not that smart either.
so i will just be me trying this
kind of experimental poetry.

Gusto Nako Mahimo Kong Gary Soto
gusto nakong mosulat sama kang gary soto
kanang mora kog trabahante nga gadala anang
pala og piko kanang gakandos sa yuta og dayog
pangagho, kanang gahandom kos bulad nga sud-an
og humot kaayo nga mais nga luto og dayon og
mahimo kong gary soto, magtindog nga gary soto,
og molingkod nga gary soto, og modagan nga gary
apan dili man gyod nako makaya si gary soto,

Saturday At The Canal
I was hoping to be happy by seventeen.
School was a sharp check mark in the roll book,
An obnoxious tuba playing at noon because our team
Was going to win at night. The teachers were
Too close to dying to understand. The hallways
Stank of poor grades and unwashed hair. Thus,
A friend and I sat watching the water on Saturday,
Neither of us talking much, just warming ourselves
By hurling large rocks at the dusty ground
And feeling awful because San Francisco was a postcard
On a bedroom wall. We wanted to go there,
Hitchhike under the last migrating birds
And be with people who knew more than three chords
On a guitar. We didn't drink or smoke,
But our hair was shoulder length, wild when
The wind picked up and the shadows of
This loneliness gripped loose dirt. By bus or car,
By the sway of train over a long bridge,
We wanted to get out. The years froze
As we sat on the bank. Our eyes followed the water,
White-tipped but dark underneath, racing out of town.
Listen to 'Da Art of Storytellin' Part 1' instrumental by Outkast
There once was a boy named Gary Napp
And Gary Napp was obsessed with rap
Day in, day out he'd be on his computer
Listenin' to Biggie, Nas, and Rick the Ruler
'Thinkin' one day I'll be a fly MC,
And everyone will want to listen to me.'
He worked on his lyric game day and night
But one day lil Gary got into a fight
Some punk teenager tried to clown his flavor
Gary swung on him and the dude pulled out a razor
The kid urged Gary to keep on swingin'
But Gary knew his life was more important than winnin'
Gary turned around and he started headin' home
The kid pulled out a nine and shot Gary in the dome
The punk teenager threw down the murder weapon
Heard the cops comin' so he started steppin'
The kid got away and was never put to trial
And ended up killin' himself after a while
He couldn't contain his feelings anymore
Couldn't do anything right, he was torn
But up above, Gary Napp forgave the kid
Rest in peace the greatest MC who never lived

A Red Palm
You're in this dream of cotton plants.
You raise a hoe, swing, and the first weeds
Fall with a sigh. You take another step,
Chop, and the sigh comes again,
Until you yourself are breathing that way
With each step, a sigh that will follow you into town.
That's hours later. The sun is a red blister
Coming up in your palm. Your back is strong,
Young, not yet the broken chair
In an abandoned school of dry spiders.
Dust settles on your forehead, dirt
Smiles under each fingernail.
You chop, step, and by the end of the first row,
You can buy one splendid fish for wife
And three sons. Another row, another fish,
Until you have enough and move on to milk,
Bread, meat. Ten hours and the cupboards creak.
You can rest in the back yard under a tree.
Your hands twitch on your lap,
Not unlike the fish on a pier or the bottom
Of a boat. You drink iced tea. The minutes jerk
Like flies.
It's dusk, now night,
And the lights in your home are on.
That costs money, yellow light
In the kitchen. That's thirty steps,
You say to your hands,
Now shaped into binoculars.
You could raise them to your eyes:
You were a fool in school, now look at you.
You're a giant among cotton plants.
Now you see your oldest boy, also running.
Papa, he says, it's time to come in.
You pull him into your lap
And ask, What's forty times nine?
He knows as well as you, and you smile.
The wind makes peace with the trees,
The stars strike themselves in the dark.
You get up and walk with the sigh of cotton plants.
You go to sleep with a red sun on your palm,
The sore light you see when you first stir in bed.
Mission Tire Factory, 1969
All through lunch Peter pinched at his crotch,
And Jesús talked about his tattoos,
And I let the flies crawl my arm, undisturbed,
Thinking it was wrong, a buck sixty five,
The wash of rubber in our lungs,
The oven we would enter, squinting
---because earlier in the day Manny fell
From his machine, and when we carried him
To the workshed (blood from
Under his shirt, in his pants)
All he could manage, in an ignorance
Outdone only by pain, was to take three dollars
From his wallet, and say:
"Buy some sandwiches. You guys saved my life."
Well, everybody is trying to make this a money thing. If you send me to another team, let's see what I ask for. I won't ask for nothing. I'll play under the same terms. So it is not Gary wants more money. Gary has money. What else do I need?

San Francisco Is a Lonely Town
Two happy people on a Greyhound bus,
We came here looking for a life for us,
But the nightlife is her new life and the only thing I've found is,
San Francisco is a lonely town.
Oh, there were good times for a little while,
But now her new friends say I cramp her style,
I guess I'm only in the way now and she don't need me hanging 'round,
San Francisco is a lonely town.
Now she's out there somewhere across the Bay
And she'll be wondering where I am when she gets in today
She'll find I've left her a one-way ticket home
And while she stands there crying all alone
And while the Greyhound keeps on rolling I'll pray the Lord she's found
San Francisco is a lonely town.

Irreversible Feelings
I give her my heart
Not knowing she'd tear it apart
If only someone could have given me warning
Maybe my heart wouldn't be in mourning
There is one question that I don't think Gary Condit can answer, and that I think is why we all aimed at Gary Condit, besides the fact that he has a relationship.

Unknown And Hostile
Can you feel it
This killing obsession
You know we're coming, you know we're coming
Can you feel it
We're the exhibition
Unknown and hostile we breath for you
Can you feel it
We're the new obsession
Can you feel it
We're the new disease.
You won't like it
Images of lovers
I don't need it, I don't need it
You won't like it
We believe in nothing
I don't remember did God retire
You won't like it
We're the new religion
You won't like it
We're the new disease.
Can you feel it
Can you feel it
You won't like it
We're the new religion
You won't like it
We're the new disease
You won't like it
We're the new obsession
You won't like it
We're the new disease.

Reminding Me of My Blessings
Thank you for reminding me,
Of my blessings.
Thank you for stopping,
My flow of complaints.
And restraining me...
When they came to contain with anger,
I felt!
God is in my life.
There to make things right for me!
What more could I ask for?
When so many aren't sure...
With questions that confuse!
I have no barriars...
I can not without Him,
Remove!
Thank you for reminding me...
Of 'What' and 'Who' I have chosen,
To choose!
And allowing myself to become upset,
By 'things' I can refuse!

What's fascinating is that when you write a script, it's almost a stream of consciousness. You have an idea that it means something, but you're not always sure what. Then when you get on the set, the actors teach you.

So Many Roads
Suicide breaks hearts
suicide can tar your family apart
why did you have kill your self?
why now your angel
you watch above us
no goodbyes
just cries of pain
so many roads but just full of emptiness
i look in the sky
i fall to my knees by your grave
more tears
pain flows through my body
Adam, Eve, And The Forbidden Fruit
chocking on the fruit of the rightous
cause he told me not to eat it
he ask adam why and he says
i got it from eve
now the land of the living
is smart in a dumb way
listining to the serpant
instead of getting down to pray
only there is one who can help us
his name is jesus
he descended from the heavens
just to free us
he sits on the right hand of god
who i call hosana
cause his mersy will endureth
always and forever

Tomorrow's Goodbye
(Gary Rossington - Johnny Van Zant - Rickey Medlocke - Hughie Thomasson - Gary Burr)
I'm just a cityboy
But there's a small town side of me
And i feel it closin' in
Are we blind to see
That she's dying more each day
And she's crying out to you and me
Changes come and when they're gone
They curse the fools who wait too long
So let's take care of what we have
Before the good we know goes bad
And the beauty fades and just slips away
The dirty air,the dying seas
Will this be the world we leave
To the wild and young
I say,just look at what we've done
And right before our eyes
Today's yesterday
Will be tomorrow's goodbye
Here comes the rain
And it might wash her tears away
But it doesn't change a thing
Like my brother before me
All i can do is write this song
And for her i sing
So let's take care of what we have
Before the good we know goes bad
And the beauty fades and just slips away
The dirty air,the dying seas
Will this be the world we leave
To the wild and young
I say,just look at what we've done
And right before our eyes
Today's yesterday
Will be tomorrow's goodbye
Do you ever think about
The future or the past
Do you ever wonder
How long this world will last
So let's take care of what we have
Before the good we know goes bad
And the beauty fades and just slips away
The dirty air,the dying seas
Will this be the world we leave
To the wild and young
I say,just look at what we've done
And right before our eyes
Yeah,it's right before our eyes
Today's yesterday
Will be tomorrow's goodbye
