An Attempt To Describe

i wish to describe
anxiety on a shaking glass of water
held by your hand, but i do not wish to be
tactless about it,

with due respect i transferred
my gaze to the other side
of the window and told you about
the dancing leaves of the bamboo
being blown by the gentle
wind from a very green mountain
on the left side of
our house.

A House

rusty galvanized iron
as roof
barely a third of the space
mixed with the
nipa shillings

this is the house
by the side of the sea
with bamboo slats
as walls

the sea is not calm today
the bamboo fences are shaky
to the strong wind

i am inside a house of glass
i see all these
but i hear nothing

leaves of the jackfruit are blown
to the other side of the
fenced area

beyond this frame of mind
i cannot say anything

i am caged.
Our vision is caged.
We do not see
the whole picture
and people think that
we are wrong
that we are blind.

The North Window: Bamboo and Rock

A magisterial rock windswept and pure
and a few bamboo so lavish and green:

facing me, they seem full of sincerity.
I gaze into them and can't get enough,

and there's more at the north window
and along the path beside West Pond:

wind sowing bamboo clarities aplenty,
rain gracing the subtle greens of moss.

My wife's still here, frail and old as me,
but no one else: the children are gone.

Leave the window open. If you close it,
who'll keep us company for the night?

Clearing at Dawn

The fields are chill, the sparse rain has stopped;
The colours of Spring teem on every side.
With leaping fish the blue pond is full;
With singing thrushes the green boughs droop.
The flowers of the field have dabbled their powdered cheeks;
The mountain grasses are bent level at the waist.
By the bamboo stream the last fragment of cloud
Blown by the wind slowly scatters away.

The Restorant of Kintamani

From behind glass
Window Of Restaurant Kintamani
He talked
Again and again
Looking to far away
Blue surface of the Batur lake
To unite firmly with The mount Batur foot
Blak-green colour
To form a straigt-line of horizone
To unite with haze
To unite with the cold air
To bite imy dept skin and bone
That start porous
To bite repeatedly
To bite repeatedly my old memory
That had left behind
To become shadow
Which follow me
Where ever I go
I will run
To go down the mountain
To the lake side
And to dive in
In the dept
of thy secret
to drown all my memory
in the dept
on thy lake
but I doubt
that I could
to do that

I still silently
Still hearing
She told me
Her stories
While I am hearing
Rusling of the leaves
The leaves rustled in the wind
Blow in my heart niche
I left it precipatate/settled
In the bottom
Of my life lakes

Depicting Reflection

I gaze at the looking glass one final time
As I hope for some veritable truth to find
But the cracks run along my face in jagged lines
As the mirror cracks from side to side

Peering into the cold, dark faceted eyes
A broken poppet stares back from inside
And I catch a reflection of that I despise
As the mirror cracks from side to side

The scarred reflection is now forsaken
And many are the times my heart has died
But now it is my soul that is breakin'
As the mirror cracks from side to side

I gaze at the looking glass one final time
As the mirror cracks from side to side

I Would Like to Describe

I would like to describe the simplest emotion
joy or sadness
but not as others do
reaching for shafts of rain or sun

I would like to describe a light
which is being born in me
but I know it does not resemble
any star
for it is not so bright
not so pure
and is uncertain

I would like to describe courage
without dragging behind me a dusty lion
and also anxiety
without shaking a glass full of water

to put it another way
I would give all metaphors
in return for one word
drawn out of my breast like a rib
for one word
contained within the boundaries
of my skin

but apparently this is not possible

and just to say -- I love
I run around like mad
picking up handfuls of birds
and my tenderness
which after all is not made of water
asks the water for a face

and anger
different from fire
borrows from it
a loquacious tongue

so is blurred
so is blurred
in me
what white-haired gentleman
separated once and for all
and said
this in the subject
this is the object

we fall asleep
with one hand under our head
and with the other in a mound of planets

our feet abandon us
and taste the earth
with their tiny roots
which next morning
we tear out painfully

A Death-Parting

LEAVES and rain and the days of the year,
(Water-willow and wellaway,)
All these fall, and my soul gives ear,
And she is hence who once was here.
(With a wind blown night and day.)
Ah! but now, for a secret sign,
(The willow's wan and the water white,)
In the held breath of the day's decline
Her very face seemed pressed to mine.
(With a wind blown day and night.)
O love, of my death my life is fain;
(The willows wave on the water-way,)
Your cheek and mine are cold in the rain,
But warm they'll be when we meet again.
(With a wind blown night and day.)
Mists are heaved and cover the sky;
(The willows wail in the waning light,)
O loose your lips, leave space for a sigh,—
They seal my soul, I cannot die.
(With a wind blown day and night.)
Leaves and rain and the days of the year,
(Water-willow and wellaway,)
All still fall, and I still give ear,
And she is hence, and I am here.
(With a wind blown night and day.)

Twist And Turns

on the twists and turns
of my life, when i tumble and i fall,
when i rise and claim
my due, when i do not surrender
even a toe,
when with dignity i raise my head
and keep my arms
on my side
when i decide to calm down and
simply watch the flowing day
like a rush of the water on the mountainside
or the creek
when the ferns keep on creeping
on the side of the trees
what silence is there
left for me to sip like a strawberry juice
inside my glass

i lay my fingertip on the side
and try to hear
if the song of the wind is still there

The Mountain and the Wind

The mountain stands
The wind plays with her
Leaving her treetops in disarray
The wind moves on, unaware
Of the rustling gossips
Of him and her.

The mountain stands
The wind serenades her
A sighing song among the leaves
The wind moves on, unaware
Of the thousand songs he gave
Echoing in the bamboo grove of her heart.

The mountain stands
The wind dances around her
A waltz, a tango one eventide
The wind moves on, unaware
Of the face he left behind
Carved forever in her heart.

The Man Beside Me

now we are sailing on a
bamboo raft
floating on a silk river
bound to the other
side

except for the man
with a long bamboo pole
to touch the floor
and push us more

there is this man
beside me murmuring
his face is covered
by the shadow of his
big straw hat

the natives respect
him thinking that he
is god sent
knowing the words of
the mountain gods
who give them rain
after the drought

he chatters the song
of the cicadas
he murmurs the heaves
of the rain
finally he stops and
hands in the silence
of the rocks
that protrude in the
middle of the river

the waters rise
flood rages on
and i begin to hear
another song
of the incoming storm

then we arrive at the other
side of the river
this time we have become
one in the fold of the
fury asking the protection
of the mountain's belly

the morning news shall
tell about two men who
are fuming the seeds of
discontent of the plains
and the city

we have no names here
just coincidences

Leaves That Are Green

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty-two now but I won't be for long
Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither in the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl
I held her close but she faded in the night
Like a poem I meant to write
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither in the wind
And they crumble in your hand
I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripple run away
And they never made a sound
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither in the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
That's all there is
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they wither in the wind
And they crumble in your hand

By Your Side

I wasn't myself for so many years it seemed
Cold and confused my mind lost in the shadows
When I awoke I could see so much clearer
Held high it seems I won't be there to hear her

And I won't be by your side
No way of knowing
And I won't be by your side
Well I'll take my chances

In this place I was left for dead
Held down and mocked by all eyes watching
Now free well I'll be standing much taller
What won't kill me makes me stronger

And I won't be by your side
No way of knowing
And I won't be your side
Well I'll take my chances
And I won't be by your side
I'm free from you chains
And I won't be by your side
There's no time to cry

Early Morning Poetry

a gray cat so gentle
sleeping beside my easy chair

soft wind enters the window
from the far mountain

the white silky curtains
by the window
sway to the direction of the wind

a red rose blooms on the side
of the limestone wall

horse grazing on the grassy plain
a white dog runs toward a wooden gate

a car stops on the yard near the veranda of this old house
a brother from far announces his arrival

hot coffee and pancakes on the table
fumes of white rice and smoke from the grilled fish

faint classical Mozart music plays on the cassette
light from the sun penetrating the screen of the dining window

a black and white family picture on top of the family piano
grandpa on his military uniform as mother carries father on her arms

memories flood the room and words keep creeping like worms
i want to say that there are no termites on this house but that would be a lie.

Son-in-Law you'll never be

Son-in-law others may see, but it will always be Son to me.
When you took my daughter by the hand and stood before God and man, and promised you would keep her through sickness and health, you became my son.
You stood beside her and held her hand to the very end.
You told her you would love her until your dieing day.
And that you could not live without her being by your side, that you loved her that much and then seven weeks later you laid down and died.
You have kept your promise that you would never leave her side,
that you would Love her now, forever and always.
Now you are standing by her side holding her hand in God's heavenly land.
So Son-in-law it will never be..for you will always be a son to me
For now, forever and always

Planting Bamboos

Unrewarded, my will to serve the State;
At my closed door autumn grasses grow.
What could I do to ease a rustic heart?
I planted bamboo, more than a hundred shoots.
When I see their beauty, as they grow by the stream-side,
I feel again as though I lived in the hills,
And many a time on public holidays
Round their railing I walk till night comes.
Do not say that their roots are still weak,
Do not say that their shade is still small;
Already I feel that both in garden and house
Day by day a fresher air moves.
But most I love, lying near the window-side,
to hear in their branches the sound of the autumn-wind.

The Sounds

i heard the sound of the clock ticking
some things come
i am remembering these some things
burnt, and melting in my forehead,
i like the sound of the ticking of grandfather's
clock at night, i hear footsteps
and drippings of water
from the gutter to the floor

the window is closed and the wind makes
the sound of someone caught between
door jambs, creaking sounds creeping
on the wall, something is terrible, really terrible
and i turn my body to the left side,

there is this storm, and the strong rain comes
with the grunting wind, and trees are falling
unto each other, i hear leaves and twigs,
and the roof wanting to leave the house,

something is terribly happening on this night
of the suicidal darkness, the shimmer of the river
looks like a stainless knife

who's there? i ask the door. The mirror on the other
side answers, how dare you?

it is nobody. it is just myself, my mouth answers.

I Am.... (Your Lover)

i am the broken branch,
blown by the wind.
the key left in the door,
of the empty house.
i am the creek spilled over,
the frog on the bank.
the pot stained by time,
half filled with water.
the young woman giving birth,
and the nurse by her side.
the box of canned goods,
left on the porch.
i am the body naked,
sleeping on the silent bed.
the son killed in the war,
the picture on the wall.
i am the softness of the moth,
long left the body.
i am the kiss of lovers,
at the risk of loss.
i am the body of words,
sent without hope or destination.
i am the hand you thought wind,
blowing the hair from your face.
i am try inspite of,
i am hunger expressed.
the tongue round your heart,
the tear that comes unannounced!
i am the face of the lonely,
and the feet of the pilgrim.
i am your lover,
clothed in rain and mud!

I Think, I Know Myself

i think, i know
myself, ...i arrive
at the conclusion
of who i am, really,
when i look at you,
and i lift my
left hand to
hold the side of
my neck

my right hand
hidden inside
my pocket

i gaze at you that
long enough

you do not mind
there is no meaning attached

my hand caresses
my hair

my lips close my eyes open
my heart dancing

and you are
that event for this
celebration

i look at myself in the mirror
and say, ' a toast! '

Departure

Thousands of tiny
fists tamping the surface of the lake
flowing like a wide
river gone crazy, southeast, westnorth
letting the wind push
it around in its bed and the boat
hull hugging the shore.
What else can she do? Even the trees
agree, shaking
their crowns, throwing down their leaves as if
she were their only
child. Caught cold-footed in Magnuson
grass, trying to cut
free of the creosote-soaked pilings sunk
deep in the shallow
mud holding the water, holding her
wake for a moment,
furrow folding back over into
confusion. Cascade
gray crosscurrents! Sharp switching eddies!
Unreliable
shoals! Let the cloth argue with itself,
gasping like a child
with the air knocked out and the wind
socking the center.
Let the sail, shot-silk green and white, now
snapping, billowing
slowly draw her away from this beach
marked with broken glass, rocks
as smooth as plovers’ eggs, and small
stones splashed iron red
and orange like the sky breaking open.
Let the windows ignite
flickering copper on the other side.
Let the water be
disked with silver from here to there
churning as if roiled
by the flanks of a great, gentle fish.

i do beleive in God

there may be doubts
like pebbles along the path towards a house
there may be darkness
at the end of day
but there is still a candle to light
a gas lamp by the side
of the door
outside the house covered by a glass

you see how even during the storm
through the window
transparent on the curtains
there is still this flickering light
despite the wind
even in my sleep my nightmares
faith still glistens
like a distant star

amen.
