about Utako (an excerpt)
Utako had not heard until after the end of the war that the child had died in the care of the person who took it.
'But-do you think the child really died? ' Utako said.
Jiro looked away.
'Sometimes I think that it might still be alive, you know-possibly.'
'I'm certain that it's dead.'
'If it's alive, do you think if I met it somewhere-do you think I would know? '

Forever Starts at the End (A Sonnet)
Eternal life will start in my late last.
But who knows death began ere I was born?
A christian needs to die, as it's a must,
Before he could have seen the coming morn.
The day I went out from my mother's womb,
Is just as my death anniversary.
A dead child risen from a woman's tomb,
And breathing dust that lives for vanity.
I'm now alive but died with Him; and then,
Will die to live a life, and will not die
Again of death that doubled-killed the men
Born dead, although, alive, yet passers-by...
The residents of deathless fire where dwell
Those who died dead to die a death in Hell.

The Eve of My Death
The eve of my death, a baby was born, and this kept me alive.
The eve of my death, a baby took her first stumbling steps, and this kept me
alive.
The eve of my death, a school bus filled with laughing children drove away,
and this kept me alive.
The eve of my death, I looked out my window to see my child be swept
away to prom, and this kept me alive.
The eve of my death, my baby, my child reached out her hand to accept her
diploma, she is not a baby or a child any more, and this kept me alive.
The eve of my death, I walked with my daughter down the isle, and this kept
me alive.
The eve of my death, I held my new born grandson in my arms, and this kept
me alive.
The day of my death, I feel my grandson's tears hit me like a cool spring rain,
I see his father behind a podium an inch away from tears, I feel the
flowers on the casket that holds the only thing that keeps me alive.

What Have They Done To Me
What have they done to me
To the air that I breathe and all I see
Diseased and abused and alone
Tell me what have they done to me
They took everything I had
And crushed it all into dust
Erased all my names so I would seem
So lost
So lost
So lost
I pulled myself from my woman
To wander through the night
I'm a long, long way from emptiness
So step aside
Am I to feel alive
Am I to feel alive
Am I to feel alive
But I nearly died
Am I to see the light
Am I to see the light
But I cried
For so long
So long
What have they done to me
To the birds that sing, yeah the simple things
I held all my curses
I can't seem to rest
But it's alright
It's alright
They took from me all that one could take
My children
My loves
My orchards of tears
It's all been borrowed so we must say
They sit in the kingdom of light
And now you know how one can be
As free as one could wanna be
Cause time won't let you walk away
Time won't let you be afraid
So don't be afraid
For too long
Too long
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
But I nearly died
Am I to see the light
Am I to see the light
But I cried
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
But I'm almost home
I might seem alive
I might seem alive
But I nearly died
I might seem alive
I might seem alive
I might seem alive
But I nearly died
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
Am I to walk alone
But I'm almost home
Yeah, I'm almost home
I might seem alive
I might seem alive
I might seem alive
But I nearly died
Yeah, I nearly died
So long

I'm Alive (That Was The Day My Dead Pet Returned To Save My Life)
I was just kicking down the street
And the sun was in my eyes
So I couldn't see the truck
That was sixty times my size
And just seconds off from splattering me
Let me tell you
I was so scared I couldn't move
Like my boots were full of glue
Then I felt a little tug
And I thought of good Old Blue
And he pulled me from that catastrophe
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive
He's alive
I'm alive
I was spitting in the canyon
Near the cliff up on the mountain
When an unexpected sneeze
Hung me in the breeze
At forty five degrees in the sky
Suddenly I felt something
Had me by the belt
And in between my praying
Swore I heard a stallion neighing
Was the ghost of my horse
And I cried, yes I cried
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive
He's alive
Hey, I'm alive
Things were getting gory
Got caught on territory
Belonging to the Crutches
In an alley in their clutches
Looking kind of dismal that night
Well the leader's name was Fats
Swinging broken baseball bats
Things got really frantic
Starting jumping in their panic
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
That was the day
My dead pet returned to save my life
I'm alive, I'm alive, real alive
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
That was the day my dead pet returned
To save my life
Hallucinating billions of rats
Lots of rats
I'm alive, I'm alive
He's alive, he's alive, he's alive
I'm alive, yeah
He's alive, he's alive
I'm alive, real alive
Alive, alive, alive
Alive, alive, alive, alive
Alive, alive, alive, alive
I'm alive

Smoking Gun
The old perverbial smoking gun
as they say
just for fun
I shot it one day
shot it into a tree
the sap began to seep
down on my knee
I began to weep
I thought I killed it dead
being a child
something in my head
just went wild
I'm glad it was a tree
and not a person
or I would forever be
in a prison
the tree never died
its alive today
I still cried
and put my gun away

Realign
Decisions made from desperation
No way to go
Internal instincts craving isolation
For me to grow
My fears come alive
In this place where I once died
Demons dreaming
Knowing i...i just needed to realign
Fell in a river of illusion
And apathy
Drowning in a self-induced confusion
Id rather be
My fears come alive
In this place where I once died
Demons dreaming
Knowing i...i just needed to realign
My fears come alive
In this place where I once died
Demons dreaming
Knowing i...i just needed to realign
My fears come alive
In this place where I once died
Demons dreaming
Knowing i...i just needed to realign
My fears come alive
In this place where I once died
Demons dreaming
Knowing i...i just needed to realign
Yeah!

She's Alive
A boy to raise at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
To be made strong but all alone
Must be a pain but she's alive
Dre:
The year was 1975
That night crickets cried
They knew what was going down
Three girls travel a long country road
And one said she thinks it's time
This baby wants to come right now
A boy to raise at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
To be made strong but all alone
Must be a pain but she's alive
Ms. B:
I was scufflin' going to school
I was scufflin' and working at night
And you know what?
I truly believe and that's why
I tell a lot of parents,
single parents
Don't tell me what God can't do!
I made sure you had...
I never felt like you should be
deprived of anything...
If a man didn't want to take care
of his child you move on,
and that's what I did, I moved on
A boy to raise at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
To be made strong but all alone
Must be a pain but she's alive
A boy to raise at...at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
Ms. B:
He always wanted to be a father but
he never took care of you...
He had no money, he had nothing...
How could you care about somebody
and you never did the welfare of them?
A boy to raise at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
To be made strong but all alone
Must be a drag but she's alive
A boy to raise at her young age
No help from him but she's alive
To be made strong but all alone
Must -
And I knew I had to go down that
road by myself
She's alive

Asleep
Wait a minute.
Can't you see what this pain has done to me
I'm alive but I'm slippin'.
What you see I cannot see and maybe you'll think before you speak
I'm alive for you.
I'm awake because of you
I'm alive told you.
I'm awake swallowing you
Take a second.
Turn your back on me and make believe
It's safe to say you're never alive.
A big part of you has died and by the way, I hope you're satisfied
I'm alive for you.
I'm awake because of you
I'm alive told you.
I'm awake swallowing you
I'm alive for you.
I'm awake because of you
I'm alive told you.
I'm awake swallowing you

Untitled Poem - I
Once, one of my students read a book we had.
She was doing a history assignment on
the decline and fall of the Roman Empire
and crying. When I asked her why
she said Because. All those people died.
I said that if you start to cry for the dead
You won’t have much time for anything else.
Besides, after all the city people were killed
or died off, because their cultures got too high,
the barbarians kept some peasants alive
for their food value. Some barbarian raped
some peasant woman who produced
a child who ultimately produced you
and me, so there is this family continuity,
so don’t cry, it’s obvious, look around!
This is the reason why we Americans
are a nation of peasants and barbarians,

The Hyaenas
After the burial-parties leave
And the baffled kites have fled;
The wise hyaenas come out at eve
To take account of our dead.
How he died and why he died
Troubles them not a whit.
They snout the bushes and stones aside
And dig till they come to it.
They are only resolute they shall eat
That they and their mates may thrive,
And they know that the dead are safer meat
Than the weakest thing alive.
(For a goat may butt, and a worm may sting,
And a child will sometimes stand;
But a poor dead soldier of the King
Can never lift a hand.)
They whoop and halloo and scatter the dirt
Until their tushes white
Take good hold in the army shirt,
And tug the corpse to light,
And the pitiful face is shewn again
For an instant ere they close;
But it is not discovered to living men --
Only to God and to those
Who, being soulless, are free from shame,
Whatever meat they may find.
Nor do they defile the dead man's name --
That is reserved for his kind.

He Doesnt Know Im Alive
Cha
No no
No no no no no
Ooh baby
Ive got his picture
Its on my dresser
Right next to my bed
He doesnt know me
But I sure know him
I cant get him out of my head, no
(talk to him)
No no
I havent even tried
He doesnt even know that Im alive, no
He doesnt even know that Im alive
I got his number
I call him up, hehe
Just to hear him say hello
And when he answers
I always hang up
Ooh, that boy scares me so, woah
(talk to him)
No no I havent even tried
He doesnt even know that Im alive
(he doesnt know that Im alive)
He doesnt even know that Im alive
No-oh
No no no no
Oohhh yeah
No no yeah
Someday Ill find the nerve
To talk to him and stop acting so preserved
I told myself girl you gotta change
cause nothing ventured is nothing gained
No-oh woah
Late last evening
I dropped on by
Just to see if he was home
And when he opened the door
I could have died
There we were all alone
(talk to him)
I said excuse me I thought my friend lived here
Well he doesnt even know that Im alive
(he doesnt know that Im alive)
He doesnt even know that Im alive
He doesnt even know that Im alive
(he doesnt know that Im alive)
He doesnt even know
(he doesnt know)
Ooh
Im alive
No no, no no
No
No no, no no
Ah!
No no, no no
Ooh ooh yeah, no woah
La la la la la la la la lah

Either God is alive, in which case he'll deal with us as he sees fit. Or he is dead, in which case he was never alive, it being unlikely that he died of old age.

The Complaint Of a Forsaken Indian Woman
Before I see another day,
Oh let my body die away!
In sleep I heard the northern gleams;
The stars, they were among my dreams;
In rustling conflict through the skies,
I heard, I saw the flashes drive,
And yet they are upon my eyes,
And yet I am alive;
Before I see another day,
Oh let my body die away!
My fire is dead: it knew no pain;
Yet is it dead, and I remain:
All stiff with ice the ashes lie;
And they are dead, and I will die.
When I was well, I wished to live,
For clothes, for warmth, for food, and fire;
But they to me no joy can give,
No pleasure now, and no desire.
Then here contented will I lie
Alone, I cannot fear to die.
Alas! ye might have dragged me on
Another day, a single one!
Too soon I yielded to despair;
Why did ye listen to my prayer
When ye were gone my limb were stronger;
And oh, how grievously I rue,
That, afterward, a little longer,
My friends, I did not follow you!
For strong and without pain I lay,
Dear friends, when ye were gone away.
My Child! they gave thee to another,
A woman who was not thy mother.
When from my arms my Babe they took,
On me how strangely did he look !
Through his whole body something ran,
A most strange working did I see;
---As if he strove to be a man,
That he might pull the sledge for me:
And then he stretched his arm, how wild!
Oh mercy! like a helpless child.
My little joy! my little pride!
In two day more I must have died.
Then do not weep and grieve for me;
I feel I must have died with thee.
O wind, that o'er my head art flying
The way my friends their course did bend,
I should not feel the pain of dying,
Could I with thee a message end;
Too soon, my friend, ye went away;
For I had many thing to say.
I'll follow you across the snow;
Ye travel heavily and slow;
In spite of all my weary pain
I'll look upon your tent again.
---My fire is dead, and snowy white
The water which beside it stood:
The wolf has come to me to-night,
And he has stolen away my food.
Forever left alone am I;
Then wherefore should I fear to die ?
Young as I am, my course is run,
I shall not see another sun;
I cannot lift my limb to know
If they have any life or no.
My poor forsaken child, if I
For once could have thee close to me,
With happy heart I then would die,
And my last thought would happy be;
But thou, dear Babe, art far away,
Nor shall I see another day.

Dead Or Alive
Dont turn off the light
You might draw the queen of spades
Dont shut the door
You dont need to be alone
I wont bring you no food
There might be some poison in your meat
Ive got to know are you dead or alive
Dont shut the door are you dead or alive
Dead or alive
Pick your window youre leaving
Dont look in the mirror
With a dollar up your face
Youve got money to burn
Youre cheap at half the price
Oh dont powder your nose
Dont blow your brains just for the the
Crack
Ive got to know are you dead or alive
Just for the crack are you dead or alive
Dead or alive
Pick your window youre leaving
Youre running so fast
But you know youre standing still
Im afraid of your shadow
And the knife in its hand
Youre dancing with death
To the tune of the dealer
And he dont care
Dont give a toss
Dont want to know if youre dead or alive
Dont want to know if youre dead or alive
Dead or alive
Pick your window youre leaving

Dead or alive
They say that crime dont pay
(wanted) dead or alive
I was born to be a runaway
When youre out on your own
You can be so alone
City livin means breakin the rules
Once youre in you never get out
Theres just no way to stop
Theres nowhere to go theyre draggin you down
cos youre the one they want
Dead or alive
They say that crime dont pay
(wanted) dead or alive
I was born to be a runaway
If the street is your friend
Gotta fight to the end
Soldiers of fortune they never give up
And once youre out you have it made
You rake your way to the top
Nowhere to go theyre draggin you down
cos youre the one they want
Dead or alive
They say that crime dont pay
(wanted) dead or alive
I was born to be a runaway
Wanted dead or alive
Take it or leave it break all the rules
Once youre in you never get out
Theres just no way to stop
Theres nowhere to go theyre draggin you down
cos youre the one they want
Dead or alive
I was born to be a runaway
(wanted) dead or alive
I was born to be a runaway, anyway, (runaway)
Wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive
Wanted dead or alive

Stacked With Crack
He was doing 60 in a 20 mile zone
You could see this man was stoned.
When he stopped at the light his eyes were red
He looked as if he was dead.
He was laughing so hard he could not stop
And out came the smoke and the smell of pot.
It’s a shame that they can’t see
The things they do that can hurt you or me.
A child was getting ready to cross the street
A school guard was there at his beat.
He took off like a bat out of hell
He hit the child and then she fell.
He took off and did not look around
And there laid the child on the ground.
They say he got three blocks away
Crashed and died that day.
The child went to the hospital
with scratches and bruises
But his family was the ones that were losing.
They lost their son on that tragic day
Because smoking pot got in the way.
The joint they sold him was laced with crack
The odds against him was fully stacked.
They never found out who sold it to him that day
But with crack, you do not play.

Problem Child
Im hot
And when Im not
Im cold as ice
See me comin [get out of my way]
Step aside [just step aside]
Or pay the price
What I want I take
What I dont I break
And I dont want you
With a flick of my knife
I can change your life
Theres nothing you can do
Cause Im a problem child
Make my stand
No mans land
On my own
Man in blue
Its up to you
The seed is sown
What I want I stash
What I dont I smash
N youre on my list
Dead or alive
Got a .45
N I never miss
Cause Im a problem child
Every night
Street light
I drink my booze
Some run
Some fight
I win they lose
What I need I like
What I dont I fight
N I dont like you
So say bye bye
While your still alive
Cause your time is due
Cause Im a problem child

No Tears
tears roll down his checks
as he muttered the words “she’s dead”
I would have stopped
stared as if he was a ghost
and I would have thought
god it’s about time
but as I looked around to the people I loved something came over me
mom and dad were crying,
Ethan, Andy, and even john looked sad
here I was with a smile on my face
how dumb could I be not even act like I care
but the truth really is that I don’t give a shit
about if she had died or not
it’s better for us in the long run anyway
make everyone happier
I’m just a kid so what am I supposed to think when someone
that has made my life and my family’s life miserable
what am I suppose to fell when someone has made me hate coming “home”
what am I suppose to do when many of times I have wished her dead
what am I suppose to say to the person that made me believe I live in hell
am I suppose to lie
what would you do
what would you fell
what would you say
what would you think
I almost feel sorry for not feeling bad
but I don’t
I almost feel sorry for Steve
but yet again why should I care when his parents die
when he didn’t care when my dad died
I will admit there were a couple of minutes
where I felt like a bad person for not feeling bad
but it’s not worth my time
enough tears will be shed from her death
why should I need to contribute to the waterfall
a tear runs down my face
yes a tear
one single tear
yet no tears flow from my eyes
of sadness

I want to
I want to tell you a story, And you can read about it some more,
About a wise king called Solomon, who had servants do e Rey chore;
One day he heard the Lord God of Israel talk to him and say,
Because you chose to be my child, and my words you do obey,
I have decided to give you a gift and you can decide which to choose,
You can become very rich, so money, or wisdom, which can you use?
Solomon thought long and hard, and decided wisdom was the best,
And so God said because you wasn't greedy you can have the rest.
Solomon soon found out wisdom he did receive, from the Lord,
When 2 women came fighting over one baby boy he had heard;
The mother of the one who died said its mine the child that's alive,
But the other mother whose one who lived no that's mine, she does lie.
They both argued so king Solomon said cut the baby in two,
Let them share half each, In the bible you'll see it's true;
The real mother said no give to her, please don't destroy the boy,
But the other mum just kept saying slice him, she thought it like a toy.
So king Solomon said give the child to the mother over there,
She is the real mother, she was protecting him, cause she doth care;
Only a real mother could show so much love, enough to give away,
Than let her child be destroyed, Wise Solomon knew what to say.
Yes! Solomon received money as well, but becoming rich went to his head,
When he built such beautiful buildings, he forgot God, and said t'was I. Instead;
The Moral of this story, is don't forget to say Thanks to God for everything,
Never think that you did it all, God has made. So Give Praises to God as you sing.
