Magic Of The Kona Coast

I learned much during many trips to the Big Island of Hawaii;

Fire goddess Pele helped incinerate my personal issues.
She guided me to the gentle waters of Kealakekua Bay, to swim with spinner dolphins, where I learned what pod-life means.

Kilauea’s violent eruptions, reaching, expanding, ever creating.

A lone coconut seedling clung to life on a vast black lava plane, patiently waiting for rain, wind to break down the arid harshness, she’d chosen to inhabit and reforest.

Humpback whales taught me how they hold Earth in balance with their songs.

I learned to fearlessly swim and love big blue water.

Honaunau (Place of refuge) where wrongdoers made their way for forgiveness and safety.

Hawaii, a remnant of ancient Lemuria beckons her wayward children home…

Gee its great, to be in that fiftieth state
The land of enchanted dreams
What an isle, where its heaven tropical style
Where love weaves a spell, it seems

Hawaii

Do you wanna go
Straight to hawaii
(hawaii) hawaii (hawaii)
Straight to hawaii (hawaii, hawaii)
Oh do (honolulu, waikiki) you wanna come along with me
(do you wanna come along with me)
I heard about all the pretty girls
With their grass skirts down to their knees
All my life I wanted to see
The island called hawaii
Go to hawaii
(hawaii) hawaii (hawaii)
Straight to hawaii (hawaii, hawaii)
Oh do (honolulu, waikiki) you wanna come along with me
(do you wanna come along with me)
Now I dont know what town youre from
But dont tell me that they got bigger waves
Cause everyone that goes
Comes back with nothing but raves
Thats in hawaii
(hawaii) hawaii (hawaii)
Thats in hawaii (hawaii, hawaii)
Oh do (honolulu, waikiki) you wanna come along with me
(do you wanna come along with me)
And pretty soon this winter
Theyll hold the surfing championship of the year
Surfer guys and girls
Will be coming from far and near
Go to hawaii
(hawaii) hawaii (hawaii)
Go to hawaii (hawaii, hawaii)
Oh do (honolulu, waikiki) you wanna come along with me
(do you wanna come along with me)
And you now (honolulu, waikiki)
You wanna live hanah lee
(do you wanna come along with me)
Ooo ooo ooo (honolulu, waikiki)
Ooo ooo ooo (do you wanna come along with me)
Ooo ooo ooo (honolulu, waikiki)

The “Big Island” of Hawaii
Beautiful, lush and remote
Magic n’ wonder abound
“Once known as Mu” he wrote

“In the middle of the Pacific ocean where East meets West,
Is an Island of fire and ice, Home of the volcano and doorway,
To another dimension and a different reality. Here magic lives,
Where the Earth herself liquefies and nothing is quite as it seems.”

The Sound Of Wings.....

from the bars of the cell,
i learned freedom from the body.
from the underside of the bridge,
i learned home has not a house.
from forty years of working,
i learned the bitterness of the slave.
from the political lies,
i learned that truth cant be bought.
from the books i read,
i learned to reason and question.
from the heroin needle,
i learned the value of life.
from love lost,
i learned how to love.
from doubt i learned seeking,
in seeking i found god to be more.
from the scars on my heart,
i learned to be a man.
from battles fought and lost,
i learned the need for peace.
from discrimination i learned equality,
from anger i learned forgiveness.
from the mirror i learned responsibility...
from the bars of the cell,
i learned the sound of wings!

Happy Hawaii

Early this morning I drove in the rain
Out to the airport to get on the plane
Hey honololu, were going to happy hawaii
Alice has been there, she said it was fun
Swimming and surfing, enjoying the sun
Hey honololu, were going to happy hawaii
After all Ive had to go through
Im making no plans (making no plans oh-ooh)
But i, but I believe love gives me a second chance
Guess Ive been working a little too hard
Need a vacation, Ill send you a card
From honololu, a greeting from happy hawaii
Its so exciting, why should I pretend
In a few hours the plane will descend
Hey honololu, were going to happy hawaii
I can imagine the beach and the sand
Walking with someone and holding his hand
Hey honololu, were going to happy hawaii
After all Ive had to go through
Im making no plans (making no plans oh-ooh)
But i, but I believe love gives me a second chance, mmm
Ive got a feeling the dream will come true
Somebodys waiting and Ill forget you
Hey honololu, were going to happy hawaii

To spend my christmas surfin, I cant deny it

For years I saved my pennies and planned it
The great pacific ocean, well span it
I wanna spend christmas where I dig it the most, in hawaii

Wish a melekalikimaka to you
Theyre the friendliest people anywhere in hawaii

The island flower fragrance in the air
Well write a card and underneath the mango trees
Well say, wish you were here with us in hawaii

The Bitter Art...

it was the lesson learned
while fishing for catfish on the river
in that small creek
mossy, and covered with some
coconut leaves
rotten
where the catfish liked to swim
and be caught
for the divine purpose of
lunch for the
poor,

i have learned the bitter art
of waiting

Learned...

from being homeless,
i learned the value of home!
from being hungry,
i learned the value of being fed.
from being sick,

from being confined in a cell,
i learned the value of freedom.
from being persecuted,

Water can sustain life (but not for him)

Water can sustain life, , but not for him,
Water took his life, he never learned to swim;
Too many children, too many early deaths,
Water claimed their souls and dying breaths.
A fraction of a second, is all it takes,
Pools, canals and man-made lakes.

The greatest loss, is to the very young,
Their songs are finished, and left unsung,
Water refreshes the body no more,
The spark of life has exited the final door.
Water can sustain life, but not your daughters,
There is no such thing as 'our safe waters.'

The greatest loss, is unfinished growing,
The biggest loss, is always knowing,
Knowing your boy or girl is dead,
Wishing it were you instead.

I Have Learned

I had been told 'never' to say never.
And for as long as I lived,
I will learn a 'never' said will return.

And I found that to be true.
I have learned to focus and remain conscious.
Never to keep repeating the same mistakes.

I have learned,
The giving of oneself...
Opens the door to heartache.

I have learned,
Forgiveness for some...
Means a forgetting for them to what they've done.

I have learned,
A revolving door...
Revolves not solve solutions.

I have learned,
A no does not mean yes...
To a depleting of my happiness.

I have learned,
Never to allow my peace of mind...
To be plucked by anyone wishing to get on my nerves.

I have learned,
THAT!
And 'that' aint gon' happen no mo'!
Never.

When You Have Done Your Best

when you have done your best
and they all begin to like
your art
your ways and what you want to become
when they also want to become like you
when you tell them now where to go
and what to do
when they are now at home with themselves
in their own chosen climates and houses
when they have understood their fears
and learned to live with their longings
when they have learned the power
of laughter
when they have learned to dream
when they have learned
how to talk to a tree,

it is time for you to go
you have freed them all from their shackles
you have taught them how to fish

it is time for you to go
your presence has become useless
it is now time to go
human reconstructor.

I've learned

Ive learned that to love someone doesnt have to involve pain,
Ive learned that to have a friend you must be a friend first,
Ive learned that in time youll see your mistakes and learn from them,
Ive learned that to be alone sometimes is the best thing for you,
Ive learned that in order to love a person you must feel loved,
Ive learned that if your wrong admit it or youll never forgive yourself,
Ive learned that your first love will be a part of you and you may never forget,
Ive learned that in order to move on you must fix what was first wrong,
Ive learned that if you ever mess up, you can always start over again,
Ive learned that to be 'cool' doesnt involve pressure,
Ive learned to accept what I have and be happy,
Ive learned that people will come and go so tell the ones you love how you feel,
Ive learned that to respect yourself you must respect others,
Ive learned that your actions always involve consequences whether it be good or bad,
Ive learned that priceless words can mean the world to someone,
Ive learned that sometimes being silent is the best solution,
Ive learned to expect the unexpected,
Ive learned that healing a broken heart involves tears and pain,
Ive learned to see the world in the eyes of others,
And Ive learned that each new day is a day to touch a life.

Epiphany, Dead Man Walking

i learned to walk again,
the day you drove away
and left me standing in the drive...

i learned to see again,
staring at old photographs
in a book hid away.

i learned to think again,
thinking, and rethinking
every move and every action.

i learned to feel again,
struck dumb with waves of sorrow,
with blood on my lips.

i learned to cry again,
in the dark and sleepless night,
when no one else could see.

i learned to fight again,
pushed back against the wall
with nothing left to lose.

i learned to pray again,
to a God that doesnt answer,
from the gates of hell.

i learned to dream again,
violent shaking nightmares,
waking up to a cold sweat.

i learned to love again
to cherish every moment,
every touch forgotten.

i learned to walk again,
and walked off into the sunset
with our hearts in my hands.

The Fog

You see, Im all grown up now.
He said,
Just put your feet down child,
cause youre all grown up now.
Just like a photograph,
I pick you up.
Just like a station on the radio,
I pick you up.
Just like a face in the crowd,
I pick you up.
Just like a feeling that youre sending out,
I pick it up.
But I cant let you go.
If I let you go,
You slip into the fog...
This love was big enough for the both of us.
This love of yours was big enough to be frightened of.
Its deep and dark, like the water was,
The day I learned to swim.
He said,
Just put your feet down, child.
Just put your feet down child,
The water is only waist high.
Ill let go of you gently,
Then you can swim to me.
Is this love big enough to watch over me?
Big enough to let go of me
Without hurting me,
Like the day I learned to swim?
cause youre all grown up now.
Just put your feet down, child,
The water is only waist high.
Ill let go of you gently,
Then you can swim to me.

Fish Out Of Water

You always said you were the compassionate one
But now you're laughing at the sun
With all your high class friends you think you've got it made
The only thing you made was that tanned look on your face
With all your cigarettes and fancy cars
You ain't a clue who or what you are

You're dreaming your life away
Fish out of water
Go swim in the tide today
Fish out of water

We used to sit and talk about primal scream
To exorsice our past was our adolescent dream
But now it's sink or swim since your memory fails
Now in Neptune's kitchen you will be food for killer whales
And on the crucifix his mother made
Hangs one more martyr to the hit parade

You're dreaming you're life away
Fish out of water
Go swim in the tide today
Fish out of water

You're dreaming you're life away
Fish out of water
Go swim in the tide today
Fish out of water

The Refraction Of Water

Not knowing how to swim
I became an expert
at diving in

and swimming under water
(oh I could do that)
for a width
and then
another width back

reaching for the safety of the bar as if it were
Life itself
even pushed it so far
(I held my breath)
took to swimming lengths
underwater
the danger and the fear of death
became the thrill of it

lost in a soundless universe
living only on that one breath
my shadow like a soul distorted
accompanying me on the bottom
like a dolphin

///Time///broken///
in the refraction
of water.
Although I never learned
to swim

I became an expert
in not drowning.

***

IN AN OCTOPUS’S GARDEN WITH YOU

We play about
in the pool
(act the fool)

not swimming – playing.

I swim underwater
for a length

before passing underneath
your wide open legs.

You thrill to the touch
as I softly brush
your inner thighs
with my curly hair.

You laugh & cry:

“Again…again! ”

This time you
untying the little ribbons & bows
of your tiny bikini bottoms

giving me
a glimpse

of Heaven here
on earth
(under water)

my lungs on fire
gasping for breath

come up

clenched in my teeth
your little yellow
polka-dot bikini bottoms

only to find your top
like a jellyfish

scurrying away on
the surface.

your nakedness
split in two

by the refractive index
of the water.

“Come here! ”
you sneer

“I’ve got something
I want to

show you! ”

You sure
show me.

Loneliness Is A Hurting Thing

once my heart was full of joy as i grew up from a baby boy.
i learned to love and i learned to hate.
i learned to sit and contemplate.
i learned the abc's of right and wrong.
i learned to fight and become big and strong.
i was taught by my elders or so it seemed
all about life and what it means.
the one thing that they could not teach-for they had not
gotten to reach-that time of life when you're old and gray.
and it seems that life has slipped away
they had gone through life's hall of fame
joys and sorrows they all have gained.
life has only two guarantees-age and death or so it seems.
they go through life and children they bear
to find when they're old 'that kids don't care.
now if you listen while they pray-'you will hear a small voice say'
oh lord take me away-please don't let me live another day.
this loneliness i cannot bear! i have no one with whom
i could share-the joys and fulfillments of yesteryear.
'oh dear god is this to be-not even any company.
no one to speak to -no one to hold
no one to call my very own.
when you reach that golden age, you become
like an animal in a gilded cage.
you pace the floor from wall to wall
wondering if you have the gall.
to start your life all anew and try to forget your solitude.
yes my friends-i'll tell you now loneliness is a heavy crown.
i'll tell you this'my children beware' age and death are very near.
when you stop and turn around-another step you have found.
with life there is no turning back
no one to help pick up the slack.
with pride and determination you move along
head held high-eyes are strong.
to face the challenge of what is to be.
loneliness and hearthaches must comfort me.

Casting One's Own Shadow

Call your trip whatever you wish.
I've learned not to debate, argue...
Or 'franchise' anyone's opinion,
As if to make mine!
Nor do I agree to evaluate...
Someone's statement,
Whether a line given to solicit...
An opinion I've given in anything I've written.

I've learned an exchange of experiences,
Is not a possibility.
And I've learned this by listening.
And this many people seldom do.

I've been up and down too many times,
To discover my own comprehension...
About life.
My life and how 'my' life is connected.

When I found criticisms made of me by others...
'Added' to my understanding,
If right, wrong or indifferent when given...
I still had to brush my own teeth.
Walk on my own two feet!
And be accountable for my own actions.

I stopped making excuses,
When they began not to make sense to me.
I spent more time defending myself...
Instead of living my life.
And I began to do that...
When I started to appreciate myself.

And 'if' I was to give my advice to anyone...
AND...
I did say 'if'.
I would say this...
If anyone finds they are seeking acceptance,
On a path they have chosen to take...
It is not a path they have chosen.
How can it be?

How can someone declare something theirs,
When others can do the same thing thing?
If voices can be heard?
Footprints can be seen?
And the path one takes has already been paved?
That is following...
Not casting,
One's own shadow!

I do not wish,
I demand people to get out of my light.
What would be the point,
If I am patiently waiting for someone else to decide...
Whether or not they want to move out of it?
That kind of time I am not giving to anyone!
Period.

I've learned many lessons.
