World War Three

When war broke out
the sky grew dark
the silence gone
the mountains stark

The air glowed red
the armies marched
the front lines died
the land grew parched

When fallout cleared
the sun shone bright
the land was seared
a lonely sight

All life was gone
forever lost
no reason to fight
they paid the cost

The language of love

The dialogues that love broke the silence with
Like the roses that grew on mountains
With the salt from the winter sky
The unabashed soliloquy, even in monologues
They grew noisy like bees,
The string of words tied to my tongue
They mutter an odd dialect of love,
The grammar of silence was hideous
How could you bear something like that?
the language of silence I understood not
It wrote in whispers and spoke in empty pages
Lulled to sleep by the barrage of lyrics
Even the poems looked liked slangs
Just then, at that very second
I remembered silence is just a figure of speech,
And dear when of love we speak
With tongues savoring every move
The eyes measuring, the ears leaning
The eternal night singing
The language of love is after all
The silence
That meanders within…………….

Elsie

A Memory

LITTLE elfin maid,
Old, though scarce two years,
With your big dark hazel eyes
Tenderer than tears,
And your rosebud mouth
Lisping jocund things,
Breaking brooding silence with
Wistful questionings!
Like a flower you grew
While life's bright sun shone.
Does the greedy spendthrift earth
Heed a flower is gone?
No; but Love's fond ken,
That gropes through Death's dark ways,
Almost seems to hear your Voice,
Seems to see your Face!

Grew Up Fast

We grew up fast
And no one seemed to notice
We grew up fast
And we grew up alone
Mom and dad
Were never what we wanted
We grew up fast
And we grew up alone
We grew up along
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
Well you know what I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
You never act like that with no one else
We grew up fast
When lies were just a fact of life
We grew up mad
Cause we never had a home
We faced the past
And forgave the revolution
We grew up smashed
And we grew up alone
We grew up alone
Hey my brother
I got no fight with you
I just cant lie down
Hey my brother
I got no fight with you
I just cant lie down
No, I just cant ride down
I just cant ride down
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
Well you know what I am
So dont act like Im something else
Well you know who I am
So dont treat me like Im someone else
You know where I am
So dont act like Im somwhere else
You never talk like that to no one else
You never scream like that for no one else
You never suck like that for no one else

No One Questioned the Reek

When behavior they 'then' expressed,
Was not addressed...
But to some questionable?
Those of responsibility could have stood up,
To the plate.
No one did this.
But many bit down to chew!
And...
Instead,
An appreciation for that was shown.
With a bowing to lower eyes and heads.

Mixed signals were sent.
And deceit and devilment...
Were given carte blanche signals,
Not to slow down with caution...
But to move like blinded bulls,
Charging through halls...
Where precious crystal and china were used.
And no one confused a 'no' with a 'go'!
In fact...
Honors were given.
And some medals bestowed.

Some folks were given carte blanche signals.
For more of this to be exposed.
And it showed.

And they did...go!
Taking 'everything' with them,
To an humongous cellpool!
A deepened hole...
Where rooms were added.
And pretensions glowed!

With a renovation to extend the existing stench.

Guests were invited and asked to adorn masks.
No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

And it did!
No one hid.
Deceit was done,
And everyone told...
Their bigger 'fibs'.

But...
No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

And it did!
No one hid.
Deceit was done,
And everyone told...
Their bigger 'fibs'.

And...
No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned the reek.
It was as if an acceptance grew.

No one questioned.
No one questioned.
No one questioned the reek.

Rain On A Scarecrow

Scarecrow on a wooden cross Blackbird in the barn
Four hundred empty acres that used to be my farm
I grew up like my daddy did My grandpa cleared this land
When I was five I walked the fence while grandpa held my hand
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry there's no legacy for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
The crops we grew last summer weren't enough to pay the loans
Couldn't buy the seed to plant this spring and the Farmers Bank foreclosed
Called my old friend Schepman up to auction off the land
He said John it's just my job and I hope you understand
Hey calling it your job ol' hoss sure don't make it right
But if you want me to I'll say a prayer for your soul tonight
And grandma's on the front porch swing with a Bible in her hand
Sometimes I hear her singing "Take me to the Promised Land"
When you take away a man's dignity he can't work his fields and cows
There'll be blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Blood on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Well there's ninety-seven crosses planted in the courthouse yard
Ninety-seven families who lost ninety-seven farms
I think about my grandpa and my neighbors and my name
And some nights I feel like dyin' Like that scarecrow in the rain
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry they're just memories for you now
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
Rain on the scarecrow Blood on the plow
This land fed a nation This land made me proud
And Son I'm just sorry they're just memories for you now

Darkness And Daylight

You love the day, worship the light.
You mourn the setting of the sun, hide from the night.
I?
I curse the light of day, though most would praise and cheer.
I say if there were no light, the dark would hold no fear.
How would we feel about the dark if the harsh bright sun had never shone?
We would not wish for light!
For we would know the dark, alone.
It is the harsh, stark light of day which makes the dark of night seem cold.
Dark is bad and light is good, or so I have been told.
But without the dark, what would be the light?
What would a day mean, if we had no night?

Two Minutes Till Showtime

With as much fanfare
As could possibly be expected
The crowds gathered as one
In a flurry of excitement
The noise of chatter grew loud
Filling every corner of the room
The lights dimmed and shone
Across the empty stage
The final sound checks played out
While the performers waited in the wings
The fever of tension grew and built
For all the rehearsals would it be a hit
The songs and the story would it be enough
To answer the anticipation of the crowd
The nervous smiles and looks exchanged
Silence fell and filled the room
Time had come to take to the stage
The lights are up and the show is on

This Is What I See

I land a leap
Quietly, gracefully
I look into the wall-length mirror, to the left
And this is what I see…
The floor springs move beneath me
Someone mounts the highest beam,
ready for anything
Tasha spots my team
And I cheer for my coach
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
Coaches I’ve known since my childhood…
I grew up here

I look into the wall-length mirror, in the center
And this is what I see…
Someone cross-tumbles, adrenaline rushes
As she lands a front handspring
Caitlyn lands a punch front, sticks it
And I cheer for my friend
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
Friends I’ve known since I was three…
I grew up here

I look into the wall-length mirror, to the right
And this is what I see…
Shannon dismounts, back tuck from the uneven bars
And I cheer for my friend
Team girls on the trampoline
Littles in the pit back in the farthest corner
And always, and always
There’s coaches, there’s friends
People I’ve known since a long time ago…
I grew up at Spirits

Masons Children

Mason died on monday, we bricked him in the wall
All his children grew and grew, they aint never grown so tall before
They may never grow so tall again
We dug him up on tuesday, he hardly aged a day
Taught us all we ever knew, we aint never known so much before
We may never know so much again
The wall collapsed on wednesday, we chalked it up to fate
Masons children ran and flew, they aint never run so fast before
Swore theyd never show their face again
Mason was a mighty man, a mighty man was he
Always said when Im dead Im gone, dont you weep for me
Thursday came then friday, with buyers tall and bright
Masons children cooked the stew and cleaned up when the feast was through
Take me to the repo-man to pay back what is owed
If hes in some other land write it off as stole

The Rose That Grew From Concrete (credits to Tupac)

The Rose that grew from concrete
Still beautiful in every form
Its stem is strong and sturdy
Although some petals have been torn

The petals could be tears
As it struggled to get through
The fight was rough and fierce
The weight was something new

For no other rose
Had ever gone through this road
It was given a path less traveled
It was given a tremendous load

But the rose began to grow
To everybody’s surprise
Nobody ever thought
From the concrete it would rise

Through the concrete it continued
Getting roughed up as it grew
Gaining valuable experience
Learning things it never knew

Its perseverance led to strength
As it broke through the cracks
It knew it had come this far
Why bother to look back

But the dues paid to get here
Are sometimes to be admired
It shows the character and heart
And the strength of its desire

After fighting for so long
It finally reached the light of day
It was then it knew
It didn’t want it any other way

For all of the characteristics of this rose
Have led it to persevere
The journey was dark and troublesome
But the effort was sincere

Along the way there were moments
What its mind was full of doubt
Times it had to dig deep
If it ever wanted to sprout

Now in full blossom
The rose looks back at its struggle
It beams bright with pride
For overcoming its troubles

The rose that grew from concrete
Powerful and pure
Beautiful yet rugged
After everything endured

The rose that grew from concrete
Certainly one of a kind
Love growing in the heart
Memories etched in the mind

The rose that grew from concrete
At last standing in peace
Forever living in glory
As the battle has now ceased

Moses: A Story Of The Nile (extract)

Moses sought again the presence of the king:
And Pharaoh's brow grew dark with wrath,
And rising up in angry haste, he said
Defiantly, 'If thy God be great, show
Us some sign or token of his power.'
Then Moses threw his rod upon the floor,
And it trembled with a sign of life;
The dark wood glowed, then changed into a thing
Of glistening scales and golden rings, and green
And brown and purple stripes; a hissing, hateful
Thing, that glared its fiery eye, and darting forth
From Moses' side, lay coiled and panting
At the monarch's feet. With wonder open-eyed
The king gazed on the changed rod, then called
For his magicians — wily men, well versed
In sinful lore — and bade them do the same.
And they, leagued with the powers of night, did
Also change their rods to serpents; then Moses'
Serpent darted forth, and with a startling hiss
And angry gulp, he swallowed the living things
That coiled along his path. And thus did Moses
Show that Israel's God had greater power
Than those dark sons of night.
But not by this alone
Did God his mighty power reveal: He changed
Their waters; every fountain, well and pool
Was red with blood, and lips, all parched with thirst,
Shrank back in horror from the crimson draughts.
And then the worshiped Nile grew full of life:
Millions of frogs swarmed from the stream — they clogged
The pathway of the priests and filled the sacred
Fanes, and crowded into Pharaoh's bed, and hopped
Into his trays of bread, and slumbered in his
Ovens and his pans.

There came another plague, of loathsome vermin;
They were gray and creeping things, that made
Their very clothes alive with dark and sombre
Spots — things of loathsome in the land, they did
Suspend the service of the temple; for no priest
Dared to lift his hand to any god with one
Of those upon him. And then the sky grew
Dark, as if a cloud were passing o'er its
Changeless blue; a buzzing sound broke o'er
The city, and the land was swarmed with flies.
The Murrain laid their cattle low; the hail
Cut off the first fruits of the Nile; the locusts
With their hungry jaws, destroyed the later crops,
And left the ground as brown and bare as if a fire
Had scorched it through.
Then angry blains
And fiery boils did blur the flesh of man
And beast; and then for three long days, nor saffron
Tint, nor crimson flush, nor soft and silvery light
Divided day from morn, nor told the passage
Of the hours; men rose not from their seats, but sat
In silent awe. That lengthened night lay like a burden
On the air, — a darkness one might almost gather
In his hand, it was so gross and thick. Then came
The last dread plague — the death of the first born.

Without Regret

Saddened memories,
I once held as property.
Who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

I now reflect,
Without regret.
I know now
Defeats I've met!
But who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

Those times
Stayed on my mind
For days at a time.
I used that to feed,
My own desperate needing.

I lived with anger and deceit!
I felt those feelings deep,
Within me!
Defeats I have met!
But who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

But...
Who knew,
They would go...
When they grew,
Inside of me!

Who knew,
Like I do now...
When they grew,
Somehow
They would go...
From inside of me!

The Screaming of The Corn

The summer was long
The summer was hot
The summer was dry

Days passed with
Not a cloud in the sky
And we had to water.

Everything that didn’t get water died.
The lawn dried up and blew away.

But the tomatoes grew and grew
And gave wave after wave
Of ruby red fruit.

We ate tomatoes until our gums were sore
Than gave the rest away
Only to find,
come morning yet more.

The pumpkin vines grew across the yard
When the cat walked by
The tendrils rose up
Like snakes and hissed menacingly.

We ate corn every day for a week
until the snap beans over powered
the corn stalks
breaking them down
Under the weight
Of fruit
And then we ate beans
And beans
And beans.

And the zucchini! ! !
The fruit grew right in front of our eyes
Not even waiting for the decency of night.
To veil it’s obscene, priapic swelling.

At night we prayed of the coming frost
And an end to this riotous fecundity.
But our dreams were filled with
feverish images of
Zucchini as big as zeppelins
Tomatoes the size of houses
And the screaming of the corn.

The Cross Of Jesus....

I carried the cross of Jesus,
stood inside the Nazi camps.
i fled with many at Hiroshima,
died again and again in the jungles
of napalm Vietnam...
i buried the scattered bones
of Native Americans,
slain by the Bible's swords.
i rotted in a Chinese prison,
where they tortured me with cattle prods.
i marched the famines of Africa,
weeping over the bodies of children.
marching the sands of Iraq,
the mountains of Afghanistan...
but there is more!

the broken down projects,
the trailer park cementaries.
the unemployed lines,
the soup lines,
the picket lines.
i was shot crossing the border,
no one ever knew my name.
i died in your underpaid fields,
buried nameless in your mines...
i lost my soul a thousand times,
on your heroin flesh bartered corners....

i carried the cross of Jesus...
and laid it down on your Senate floor!
