A Girls' Grave
What story is here of broken love,
What idyllic sad romance,
What arrow fretted the silken dove
That met with such grim mischance?
I picture you, sleeper of long ago,
When you trifled and danced and smiled,
All golden laughter and beauty's glow
In a girl life sweet and wild.
Hair with the red gold's luring tinge,
Fine as the finest silk,
Violet eyes with a golden fringe
And cheeks of roses and milk.
Something of this you must have been,
Something gentle and sweet,
To have broken your heart at seventeen
And died in such sad defeat.
Hardly one of your kinsfolk live,
It was all so long ago,
The tale of the cruel love to give
That laid you here so low.
Loving, trusting, and foully paid --
The story is easily guessed,
A blotted sun and skies that fade
And this grass-grown grave the rest.
Whatever the cynic may sourly say,
With a dash of truth, I ween,
Of the girls of the period, in your day
They had hearts at seventeen.
Dead of a fashion out of date,
Such folly has passed away
Like the hoop and patch and modish gait
That went out with an older day.
The stone is battered and all awry,
The words can be scarcely read,
The rank reeds clustering thick and high
Over your buried head.
I pluck one straight as a Paynim's lance
To keep your memory green,
For the lordly sake of old Romance
And your own, sad seventeen.

Late last night
I get a call from a so-called friend
He wouldnt give his name
Says he saw you with another man
Feels like seventeen years
Its only seventeen days
Since I saw the real you
And I let you walk away
You left me broken
You left me stranded
The way you play this game of love
Its just plain underhanded
I spent a lot of time
And I spent all my money
Dont want no other fool
To put his hands on you
Who you been talkin to?
Yeah who you been walkin with?
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen
They said I was playin with fire
I knew I had to take a chance
I had to take you higher
To a new experience
But little did I know
Id never get that far
Girl, you know you put on quite a show
Youre gonna be a star
When you grow older, girl
Youll remember I told you, girl
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen
Seventeen, youre just seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen
Seventeen, youre only seventeen
Seventeen, seventeen

song - And Broken Dreams
Two lovers slowly dancing
There was stardust in the air
Falling on the perfect romance
On their innocence and flair
Blue velvet long black hair
And you and I were waltzing
But it must have been a dream
There were legends in the making
Drifting through that gentle scene
As cool as seventeen
The double doors swung open
And we spilled into the world
In between the smoke and mirrors
Where forgetting soon begun
Our rainbow in the dust
Four lovers slowly drifting
As the credits crossed the screen
They were legends well past breaking
On the dark side of their dreams
As blind as seventeen
(chorus)
And round we danced as love we chanced
The stars were riding on a bet
The moon had placed upon the sea
And lost as on we danced and fell
For soon your cheeks grew wet
With wasted years and broken dreams

Dead Leaves
When these dead leaves were green, love,
November's skies were blue,
And summer came with lips aflame,
The gentle spring to woo;
And to us, wandering hand in hand,
Life was a fairy scene,
That golden morning in the woods
When these dead leaves were green!
How dream-like now that dewy morn,
Sweet with the wattle's flowers,
When love, love, love was all our theme,
And youth and hope were ours!
Two happier hearts in all the land
There were not then, I ween,
Than those young lovers' -- yours and mine --
When these dead leaves were green.
How gaily did you pluck these leaves
From the acacia's bough,
To mark the lyric we had read --
I can repeat it now!
While came the words, like music sweet,
Your smiling lips between --
"So fold my love within your heart,"
When these dead leaves were green!
How many springs have passed since then?
Ah, wherefore should we count,
The years that sped, like waters fled
From Time's unstaying fount?
We've had our share of happiness,
Our share of care have seen;
But love alone has never flown
Since these dead leaves were green.
Your heart is kind and loving still,
Your face to me as fair,
As when, that morn, the sunshine played
Amid your golden hair.
So, dearest, sweethearts still we'll be,
As we have ever been,
And keep our love as fresh and true
As when these leaves were green.

(track 2 - time 3:18)
(aimee mayo/bill luther/chris lindsey)
Backseat of her daddys car
I was trying not to go too far
Kept thinking about the words the preacherman said
Lightnin flashed across the sky
I saw love in a young girls eyes
And thats a look you never forget
Seventeen only comes once in a lifetime
Dont it just fly by wild and free
Goin any way the wind blew baby
Seventeen livin on crazy dreams
Rock and roll and faded blue jeans
And standing on the edge of everything
Seventeen
Legs hangin off the bayou bridge
Feedin fish potato chips
And talkin about the mysteries of the universe
Yeah the world was somewhere else
We had the summer all to ourselves
And the stars went off like fireworks
Seventeen only comes once in a lifetime
Dont it just fly by wild and free
Goin any way the wind blew baby
Seventeen livin on crazy dreams
Rock and roll and faded blue jeans
And standing on the edge of everything
Seventeen
Seventeen only comes once in a lifetime
Dont it just fly by wild and free
Goin any way the wind blew baby
Seventeen livin on crazy dreams
Rock and roll and faded blue jeans
And standing on the edge of everything
Seventeen
Yeah seventeen

Lonely Lady #17
Lonely lady one, she run away.
And number two, she do the same.
Lady number three walk out on me
Like number four.
Whos keeping score?
Lady five, oh how she lied.
She made me pay some dues.
Six and seven, eight, nine, ten,
They really were bad news.
Oh no, theyd only break my heart.
Thats how it seems.
And then I finally came upon
A lady seventeen.
Lonely lady number seventeen,
She stayed a while.
She had the style.
Lonely lady number seventeen,
She got to be with lonely me.
Lonely, lonely lady number seventeen, yeah.
Lonely lady!
Ladies eleven, twelve and thirteen,
They came and went.
Baby, I still can hear them sayin
Its time to repent.
I turned around,
And there she was
With such a sweet surprise:
A lovin face,
Lovin smile,
And love lights in her eyes.
Lonely lady number seventeen,
You stayed a while.
You had the style.
Lonely lady number seventeen,
Come on and be
With lonely me
Oh no, when lady fourteen walked out,
Thats when I screamed.
No luck with lady fifteen
Or sweet sixteen.
But lonely lady number seventeen,
You stayed a while.
You had the style.
Lonely lady number seventeen,
Come on an be
With lonely me.
Lonely, lonely lady
Number seventeen, yeah!
Lonely lady!
She makes me feel so sociable

Happy Ever After
I read a great story of joy and laughter
Of love
And happy ever after.
The tears that they had wept
In dreams that they had kept
Almost dry before they, d begun
Reunited in summer sun.
Broken hearts were mended
Promises extended
Lips as sweet as ever
Uttered words like
'Always' and 'Ever'
Colour returned to their cheeks.
The wedding
Just a matter of weeks.
Yes this great love story I read
But with fiction
It just goes to my head.

Of Love
In the wilderness of love,
Of the thick bushes that leads the way to the red sea;
So, hold on to the Valley of love beside you.
Of the sweet river of love,
Of the sweet milk that flows along it;
So be in the house of love with the romance that it brings.
In the picture of love,
Of the nakedness that we share on this passion;
With the aroma of a romance that leads to sex,
But all the flow of the milk in the river makes you shout for more.
Come and let us share this sweet love together,
Come and let us be in love all night long;
Like the sweet songs in the wilderness of love.

17 Again
Yay though we venture through
The valley of the stars
You and all your jewelry
And my bleeding heart
Who couldnt be together
And who could not be apart
We shouldve jumped out
Of that airplane after all
Flying skyways overhead
It wasnt hard to fall
And I had so many crashes
That I couldnt feel
At all...
And it feels like
Im seventeen again
Feels like Im seventeen
Times might break you
God forsake you
Leave you burned and bruised
Innocence will teach you
What it feels like to be used
Thought that youd done everything
You didnt have a clue
And it feels like
Im seventeen again
Feels like Im seventeen
Looking from the outside in
Some things never change
Hey hey Im a million miles away
Funny how it seems like yesterday ...
All those fake celebrities
And all those viscous queens
All the stupid papers
And the stupid magazines
Sweet dreams are made of anything
That gets you in the scene
And it feels like
Im seventeen again
Feels like Im seventeen
Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybodys looking for something
Yea

One Broken Heart
Young girl you really did believe in him
Still he broke your heart with lies
Youve got to be stronger, the pain,
It wont last much longer
Dont lose respect for yourself, no
Sweet young thing,
No, dont lose your head
Or by the time youre seventeen
Youll be waking every morning
With a stranger in your bed
One broken heart,
I know it cuts like a knife
But one broken heart
Is no reason to give up on life
Girl, be waiting, be anticipating
For that new love to come along
And one broken heart, youll survive
So sad,
You lived for and now youre dying for love
But you wont find it, like that
No peace and calm,
In the strength of a strangers arms
Baby wake up to yourself
Love aint guaranteed, no,
But it sure is worth a new start
Or by the time youre twenty-one
Youll be lying in a strangers bed
Dying from a broken heart
One broken heart,
I know it cuts like a knife
But one broken heart is no reason to give up on life
Girl, be waiting, be anticipating
For that new love to come along
And one broken heart, youll survive
And Im hoping, Im really hoping
That sweet love will come your way
To mend one broken heart, youll survive
One broken heart, youll survive
One broken heart, youll survive

Children's Playground In The City
THIS is a place where men laid their dead,
Each with his life-tale of good or ill;
Here prayers were murmured and hot tears shed,
And passionate anguish moaned its fill.
Silent now is each voice that cried,
And the tears that were wept have all been dried
In the dust; and dust are the hearts that bled
With hopeless longing for hearts grown still.
Dead and forgotten! for Death, requiter
Of love, taught Memory how to forget!
The love that remembered them died. Grow brighter,
Oh, dim grave-garden, with dead hearts set!
Room for the small flying feet to pass,
The feet of the children over the grass!
The dead, if they knew it, would feel them lighter
Than the weight of a stone that no tears make wet.
We must die too, and the grief that will live
Must die as surely--death comes to all;
But you who come after--let Nature give
To our graves her tears, to our dust her pall:
Let her hide us away in her cold broad breast,
Let us be forgotten, and be at rest,
And over our heads let the great world strive,
And the children's voices carol and call.
If your heart on the flower of remembrance is set,
There is one way to pluck it--and only one:
Dare you ask your country not to forget
A name that needs to be graved on stone?
By grief, strife, sacrifice, scorn of fame,
You may grave on the people's hearts your name,
Or your name may die, and your soul live yet
In the cause you died for--the work you have done.

Violet roses
Violets are blue / Violets are blue
Roses are red / Roses are red
Love still lives / Love still lives
While romance is dead / While romance is dead
-
You walk down the hall / He walks down the hall
Slowing your pace / And I slow my pace
Just to get a glimpse / To sneak one glimpse
Of my remarkable face / Of his beautiful face
I turn my head towards you / He looks towards me
As you quickly glance away / And I quickly glance away
A bluch on your cheeks / A bluch on my cheeks
That'll last for the day / That'll last for the day
And once we're in class / And as we go into class
It's me you ignore / It's him I ignore
You pretend you don't care / I can't show I care
While begging for more / But I'm dying for more
You talk with your girls / I begin talking to friends
About me I assume / About him and my doom
What move is the right one / Wondering what move shall I make
To make in this room / In this tiny classroom
You get up from your chair / And when it's decided
And walk towards me / I get up from my chair
With some lame excuse / To deliver a line
That's not what it seems / And a quick silent prayer
'Can I use a pencil? ' / While I ask for a pencil
Is your favourite line / My typical line
Though in your head the question / My heart changes the words
Is 'Will you be mine? ' / Into 'Will you be mine? '
You've never asked directly / Though I haven't asked him out
If I'd go out with you / And my heart lies askew
Though all the rumours say yes / I know someday I will
It's probably not true / When all rumours are true
For everyone knows / For everyone knows
Your not a girl I'd date / I'm not girl he'd date
It's not your fault sweetie / I know it's not possible
You know it's just fate / But could it be fate?
But what's there to do / So tell me what's there to do
When you never seem to go / When these feelings won't go
It's maybe hard to accept / When my heart screams hang on
But even your being slow / And my love doesn't show
Your head isn't too thick / When my head is too thick
Too comprehend what I say / To hear what he'd say
But your mind becomes blank / In the back of my mind
And you stare into space / And somewhere in space
And I know that there's butterflies / With the wings of butterflies
Flying in your chest / Beating in my chest
And I really must apoligize / Somedays I feel the need
For laying these feelings to rest / To put all feelings to rest
But a broken heart is needed / But a broken heart isn't wanted
For the message to clear / While all dreams remain clear
Because though you may want me / And even though I'm not welcome
I can't have you here / I'll plant my feet and stay here
-
Roses are red / Roses are red
Violets are blue / Violets are blue
You've always loved me / You've never loved me
But I've never loved you / But I've always loved you

To Sylvia
"O love, lean thou thy cheek to mine,
And let the tears together flow"--
Such was the song you sang to me
Once, long ago.
Such was the song you sang; and yet
(O be not wroth!) I scarcely knew
What sounds flow'd forth; I only felt
That you were you.
I scarcely knew your hair was gold,
Nor of the heavens' own blue your eyes.
Sylvia and song, divinely mixt,
Made Paradise.
These things I scarcely knew; to-day,
When love is lost and hope is fled,
The song you sang so long ago
Rings in my head.
Clear comes each note and true; to-day,
As in a picture I behold
Your tur'd-up chin, and small, sweet head
Misty with gold.
I see how your dear eyes grew deep,
How your lithe body thrilled and swayed,
And how were whiter than the keys
Your hands that played. . .
Ah, sweetest! cruel have you been,
And robbed my life of many things.
I will not chide; ere this I knew
That Love had wings.
You've robbed my life of many things--
Of love and hope, of fame and pow'r.
So be it, sweet. You cannot steal
One golden hour.
As Long As Your Eyes Are Blue
'Will you love me, sweet, when my hair is grey
And my cheeks shall have lost their hue?
When the charms of youth shall have passed away
Will your love as of old prove true?
'For the looks may change, and the heart may range
And the love be no longer fond;
Will you love with truth in the years of youth
And away to the years beyond?'
Oh, I love you, sweet, for your locks of brown
And the blush on your cheek that lies,
But I love you most for the kindly heart
That I see in your sweet blue eyes.
For the eyes are the signs of the soul within,
Of the heart that is leal and true,
And, my own sweetheart, I shall love you still,
Just as long as your eyes are blue.
For the locks may bleach, and the cheeks of peach
May be reft of their golden hue;
But, my own sweetheart, I shall love you still,
Just as long as your eyes are blue.

Nocturne
Shivering leaves and starry sky,
my love has left while here I sigh
with broken heart, and wave good-bye!
Oh breezes, swirl about his head,
Oh Nightingale, sing by his bed
and whisper gently I am dead!
From first night I saw him come,
my soul was his, and, stricken dumb,
laid pride aside as of no sum!
My eyes spoke volumes, I’ll admit,
I clung to him - things shook a bit, -
upon my hair his kiss was writ!
I shook, emotions all awry!
I know no longer how nor why
my lover he became, I sigh!
I knew him not, yet no protest
I uttered, took him to my breast
When in my rooms his love confessed!
I said to him, ‘Thy love I’ll take
while love it stays’- make no mistake,
none else my dreams so deep could slake.
His passion, though, no tardy guest
turned out to be, he left, his quest
led Lord know’s where, - I have not guessed!
I will now separated from my friend,
between the lily-pads descend
let life beneath the ripples end!
With words of willow, water, weeds,
I’ll plight my pain, - each hern that heeds
will know ‘tis I who spreads the reeds.
While waiting, to the breeze I’ll rhyme
his name, and dreaming-bells shall chime
I waited once upon a time!
As if in golden grave-cloth gowned,
untidy tresses spread around
me while I’m water-logged and bound.
Joys cast will cast their light and lie
around my head, harsh Time defy.
Green logs wound round my legs nearby.
A trembling deep within my breast
will make me feel I am caressed
by he who, lost, was loved the best.
Let my last breath, as perfume pressed,
be born upon sweet Spring breeze blest
by love’s soft sighs, then laid to rest -
And like a magic butterfly
drawn to May’s roses, swiftly fly
to kiss my Love’s lips as I die!

Photograph and Memory
In my hands I hold a photograph
That, for years, I hadn't seen-
It's the only one I've left now
from when we were seventeen.
You head cocked slightly to the right,
You strike a playful pose.
Your blue eyes fairly sparkle
above a button nose.
Your skin is fair and freckled
No makeup, none required.
Peasant blouse and chinos
are your casual attire.
Here too, is the letter that you wrote
The week my father died-
Some years had passed since seventeen-
You were no longer by my side.
You said he'd taught me how to love-
a consequential gift.
I'd had such a good teacher
That, in me, his spirit lived.
The ink is faint and faded-
the fault of light and time.
Or is it tears and fading vision
that makes it hard to read this time?
It's strange the things a man retains
as time starts to expire.
The memory of your kisses
in some neuron's random fire.
As this world counts beauty
You'd rank pretty, I suppose
But if I was the little prince
I'd choose you for my rose.

Perfection! Absolute Perfection!
As soon as I laid eyes on her, I couldn't say a word!
The reason for that to occur? Romance within me stirred...
I couldn't move as we stood there, to offer her my hand,
Because my heart was deep in prayer! In Love's sweet wonderland!
'Hello, ' she said, 'Are you OK? Another lost in space! '
But still I stood, no words to say... still gazing on her face.
'Oh, no, it's happening again! You're smitten like the rest!
Hearts and flowers! Romantic men! So easily impressed!
A whiff of perfume and you're gone! Some blonde with silky hair!
Why can't you see it's all a con and that you should beware! ? '
But she was perfect! Without doubt! The best I've ever seen!
The evidence was all about! No wonder I was keen!
I told her straight, 'You're wonderful! The perfect Valentine!
To me, your lips are lovable, as sweet as newmade wine.
To me, your eyes are precious pearls, like sapphires in the sun.
For me, there'll be no other girls... for you're my perfect one.'
She sighed as if she'd heard it all, a thousand times before.
I sighed because I'd heard Love's call and couldn't want for more.
She walked away. She left me there. Still doting on her now...
Until I knew she didn't care... Could never care somehow...
I'll not forget her perfect smile before she spoke to me...
I'll dream of her a long, long while, until Love sets me free...

Fifty Years Apart
They sit in the winter gloaming,
And the fire burns bright between;
One has passed seventy summers,
And the other just seventeen.
They rest in a happy silence
As the shadows deepen fast;
One lives in a coming future,
And one in a long, long past.
Each dreams of a rush of music,
And a question whispered low;
One will hear it this evening,
One heard it long ago.
Each dreams of a loving husband
Whose brave heart is hers alone;
For one the joy is coming,
For one the joy has flown.
Each dreams of a life of gladness
Spent under the sunny skies;
And both the hope and the memory
Shine in the happy eyes.
Who knows which dream is the brightest?
And who knows which is the best?
The sorrow and joy are mingled,
But only the end is rest.

A Little Romance in My Life
I cannot explain the way I feel about you
Girl, you're always on my mind
Everytime I often think of you
I get a funny feeling that
I'm so in love with you
I want to give you all my love
Let me show you that I'm real
The love that I have shall never fade away
I'm tired of being broken hearted
I need a little romance in my life
Can't you see I need little romance?
Take my hand
May I have this dance
No one can love the way that I can love
I'm telling you
I need a chance
I need a little romance in my life

When I Was A Young Girl
(A Song of Old Ballads)
WHEN I was a young girl, all in a green arbor,
When I was a young girl in Springtimes gone by
All the long days I went singing and smiling,
Down by the roses the sweet days beguiling,
Love in the arbor and love in the sky . . .
When I was a young girl, a young girl, a young girl,
When I was a young girl, how happy was I!
Oh, the long days I must sit at my sampler,
Oh, the slow way that the still time would go!
I longed to be running across the bright heather,
'Off with the silk gown and on with the leather,
Following the raggle-taggle gypsies, oh!'
When I was a young girl, a young girl, a young girl,
When I was a young girl, a long time ago!
When I was a young girl in days that were golden,
When I was a young girl, and life had no smart,
All the world seemed a place for my playing,
Full of great lovers to come to me, saying,
'Madam, I give you the keys of my heart . . .'
When I was a young girl, a young girl, a young girl,
When I was a young girl, and dreaming apart!
When I was a young girl, I dreamed of my lover,
A tall cavalier who should whisper me low,
'Love, on your lips are red roses a-blowing,
I am your true love, and fast is time going
Am I your true love? Oh, say yes or no!'
When I was a young girl, a young girl, a young girl–
When I was a young girl, a long time ago!
When I was a young girl there came my true lover,
Swiftly I knew him in glad days gone by;
Never a sword or a lovelock or feather,
But oh, at his touch 'twas our hearts came together,
Love in the arbor and love in the sky . . .
When I was a young girl, a young girl, a young girl,
When I was a young girl, how happy was I!
