The Painter And The Pandemic

A Painter and the Pandemic

An old lady in our village died last night… flu,
but since it was not the swine variety no one took
notice, the world press will not come here, we’ll
not see our houses on the TV. There are many
disappointments, Amazon floods, many dead, alas,
not from The Flu, survivors can sit on mud banks
without face masks, and wait for all we care.

Gauguin cut Van Gogh’s ear off, at a whore house,
then he went off to Hawaii painted native girls with
big bosoms and flowers behind well formed ears.
Now we know why. A pity none of the women who
worked there, didn’t write down their memoirs, so
a relative could proudly announce that my great, great,
great grandmother knew them both.

California Girls

Well east coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when Im down there
The mid-west farmers daughters really make you feel alright
And the northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls
The west coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on hawaii island
Dolls by a palm tree in the sand
I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldnt wait to get back in the states
Back to the cutest girls in the world
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california
I wish they all could be california girls
I wish they all could be california
(girls, girls, girls yeah I dig the)
I wish they all could be california

Airplane

Over the city in an airplane
I can see everything below
The houses they look so tiny
The cars look like dots
Weve only got fifteen minutes to go
The clouds in the sky caress my mind so tenderly
The sun shines down on the great big beautiful scene
The sound of the engine fills my ears up
Im hopin this rainy weather clears up
My lover is waiting at the airport
Soon shell be kissing me hello
The woman sitting next to me tells me bout her guy
And I tell her all about you and i
Airplane, airplane
Carry me back to her side
Airplane, airplane
I need God as my guide
Down, down on the ground
Cant wait to see her face
(a-1, a-2, a-1, 2, 3)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)
I cant wait (cant wait)
To see (her face)

Coppies

I sit and I hear them,
I see them,
But they sound the same,
They look the same.

I sit and I think about them,
Coppies of the same person,
All the same walk,
Same look,
They're all naive, all ignorant bastards!

I sit and I notice everything,
I notice the sounds,
And I notice the birds,
I notice the screaming of the city,
I notice the blindness of THEM.

I sit and wonder,
When will they see themselves,
In the mirror of the other's faces,
When will they tear eachother into pieces,
When will they remove their fake masks? !

I sit and I see the world,
I see it for what it is,
A great black pit,
Filled with people,
Who are filled with shit!

Oh, when will the great castrophony end,
Mm, when it does the sky's shall cry,
The mountains shall erupt with inevitable anger,
When this happens there will be fire! And then...
Nothing.

I sit and I wait,
For that fire to consume the Earth,
I wait for individuality to explode,
I wait for this firery Hell to engulf their minds,
I wait for their sameness to become different!

I sit and writhe in my own skin,
My heart screaming,
I can't live as one of them,
I shall not live that way,
I would rather slit my own damn throat!

I sit and I crawl in my skin,
As if the agony of America were my own,
And still they remain the same,
I scream, I cut, I rip at their minds,
And they remain the same!

Poem for my Grandmother

By the time
I knew grandmother
She was no more
It took sisteen-years
To know
Of her pains
On that sick bed,
My sisteen-year-old
Knowingness was shocked
To hear mum narrate her past
Grandmother as indeed a great
Woman n her life time.
Each time I go to her grave
I break down and cried for her,
I wish grandmother saw
The best of me
Before she was taken to the beyond
I know she would be proud of me
Let this poem of mine
Be for her,
My great grandmother.

Women Throughout Time

Women are here, there and every where,
But the society didn't give them in the past any care.
They were forced to live in carelessness, a real nightmare
They weren't allowed to take part in the society or even to share
They had to take permission even before breathing fresh air
They were by every person tamed,
And for every thing they were blamed
They hadn't any courage and all the time they were ashamed.

But this situation is no longer,
As the years taught women to be stronger.
The years taught them how to be supreme without fears,
And that their legal rights are like pearls.
Since our great women claimed for their rights,
And the entire world was awakened to women's great shouts.

The world knew that women in society have great rank,
And recognized that their legal rights in the deep ocean sank.
So the society broke all the chains around the woman her self,
And the woman came out to the world leaving her narrow shelf.

Women are amazing creatures,
Women are an object of mystery.
They are full of dazzling features,
They played their own part in the history.
Women are a great and heavenly treasure,
The epitome of human pleasure.

Now women wear looks of confidence on their face,
And they took of and tore mask of grace.
Women went quickly to learn to gain,
More education to travel through the world in their educational plane.
With their rights they can do any thing to achieve their aim,
But nothing can put out women's enthusiasm flame.

They look from every high place to their future,
And they move in every way of progress and culture.
Now a woman can go to work at schools,
And with her great word she can break any unfair rules.
And now and after giving the women all their rights,
The entire world says that by women it brights.

And such that day we honour the woman and celebrate,
The great woman who opened to the world the hope gate,
You read my poem and that is the end but don't leave,
Women still don't have all their rights, please believe.
I know that women took all their rights now and before,
But when will women stop sweeping the floor?

Hawaii, u.s.a., hawaii..u.s.a..
Were flyin, comin your way
Aloha, hawaii u.s.a.
Gee its great, to be in that fiftieth state
The land of enchanted dreams
What an isle, where its heaven tropical style
Where love weaves a spell, it seems
Hawaii, u.s.a., hawaii..u.s.a..
Were flyin, comin your way
Aloha, hawaii u.s.a.
Gee what fun, just to swim and surf in the sun
While the trade winds caress the sea
What a sight, those exotic scenes of delight
Are waiting for you and me

Sunflowers After Sex.

After the sex she stood
In front of the Van Gogh
Painting and gazed. Never
Saw that last night, she said.
It was dark, Max replied.
She touched the painting
With her fingers. Why have
A painting of flowers when
You can go out and buy some?
She asked. They last longer this
Way, he replied. So did you
Paint this? She asked in a state
Of semi undress, her eyes sleepy,
Her hair in a mess. No, Van Gogh
Did, he replied. Is he a friend of
Yours? She asked rubbing her breasts.
He sighed and shook his head. No,
Van Gogh painted that many years
Ago, now he’s dead. It’s a bit yellow,
She said, looking at the painting
Closer, what are those yellow flowers
Supposed to be? Sunflowers, he said,
They’re big flowers; people grow them
For real. She raised her eyebrows and
Pulled a face. What about that drink?
She asked. Sure, Max replied pouring
Her gin in a tall glass. She took, sipped
And winked an eye. What about more
Sex? She sighed. Sure, Max, looking at
Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, boringly replied.

Johnny McCarthy

He lived in a small house near the Town of Millstreet
At Inchaleigh close to the greyhound track
Some knew him as Johnny the old house painter
Whilst others simply called him Johnny Mac.

He was unmarried never fathered children
Which seems a pity as he'd have made a good dad
In his twilight years he walked his terrier Brandy
And Johnny said the best dog I have had.

He was a house painter and decorator
And he worked hard to earn his every bob
And those he worked for gave him more employment
For Johnny always did a tasty job.

Some people thought him to be a bit grumpy
But is there a perfect person anyway?
When hung over after a night out drinking
One can hardly feel too cheerful the next day.

He was an honest man Johnny McCarthy
A character of sorts in his own way
Since he last walked to Millstreet Town with his dog Brandy
On looking back it seems like yesterday.

Some knew him as Johnny the old house painter
Whilst others simply called him Johnny Mac
He lived at Inchaleigh close to the Town of Millstreet
In his small house close to the greyhound track

Native American Pride

Equa Adanvdo adanedi aya hia nvlinegvgv Yv uduladi nudale iga

(that I may guide others)

Nasquu gohi Yv adadvdodi vhnai nehi
(Also this I ask of you)
Equa Unitsi Elohino
(Great Mother Earth)

We walked in peace and harmony
warriors brave and strong
guided by the Great Spirit in the sky
respecting the way of Mother Earth
we taught this to our children at birth

We were all but one, just like the Eagle, we were free
this was our way, the way it would always be
with our wings spread, we would fly
this was our Native American Pride

Then white man came to take our land
said our way of life was wrong
this is what they would decide
and it didn't take them long

Still we didn't run and hide
we stood tall and made our stand
never to carry the white man's brand
this was our Native American Pride

For our own beliefs, so many died
both women and children cried
as one by one, all was lost
at the white man's cost

Said the color of their skin, made them right
but we didn't give in, without a fight
no matter how hard they would try
they couldn't break our Native American Pride

Girls

If I said I do not like girls, then that would be a lie
How can I not like girls?
So beautiful and graceful they are
Yes, sometimes I have turned to be angry with them
However, it is only girls, who can rule this world
Girls are great
Great and amazing
Also, the most wanted
I like girls, because they can make a guy, complete
Love of girls, is the best
They can make lot of difference
Girls are the BEST.

To, for, about, because of, Spike Milligan

Spike, we talked of you today.
You’ll have to live with that now, I guess -
it seems that everyone has
a place in their hearts for you.
So, like a heap of ‘floral tributes’,
they’re all individual, but
it makes a very great pile

For myself, it’s that look on your face
that stays – as if you found life just so great a thing
that it stupefied you, wondering
how to confront it – whether
to laugh at it or cry for it
(both of which you did so well,
that perhaps it didn’t help you much
to decide between, so, lucky us, we got both by turns..)
and on your face, that quizzical appeal
to the rest of us, to help you to decide
how to confront life…or sometimes, should we even try? ..

When you see, in theatre foyers,
those two masks of tragedy and comedy,
it could say underneath –
‘To Spike Milligan, who knew both’
and perhaps people would notice them more and think.

And though you laughed and cried
at our mortality like
a philosopher who was also
a stand-up performer with tears of absurdity in his eyes,
it seems we’ve decided that
despite how you may be feeling now,
we’ve decided in our mortality
that you’re immortal.

I guess
you’ll just have to live with that.

The power of words

Sometimes when you had
an idea for a poem
you didn’t jot it down
and let it be
to fade away into the naught
as if it really didn’t matter
or your words had lost their power

or was there a hidden fear,
something that you didn’t
want to talk about
or something that you didn’t
want to appear,
something that you were afraid
would kill your luck
or disturb your thoughts?

When we spoke at times
you would sarcastically say
go and write a poem about it
and I wonder if you really
didn’t care about writing
or just not about me
or was it jealousy?

Sometimes when the words
of a great poem came to me
you would demand that I immediately
do something for you
to proof my love
and not give me the opportunity
to capture the sacred words.

Yet, as time went by
and I had to leave
the words came back to you
and great verses appeared
and you said that I could string out
poems to the nth power
and wanted me
to write great messages as well
and I was afraid that card like lines
would kill the magic of words in me.

The unfinished battle

`1The unfinished battle

The strive is not over, if it is not over
It has no ending, not a definite end.
Alas! There is no finish to a war, war-
is not won by victory.this battle of a hero
the good fight of a great protagonist one-
in which no winner emerged.alas! the unaccomplished-
runners, those with women like heart, they are dead.
The great protagonist is not dying, not in this war.
The brave ones never died, they die thousands of times.
the war is a cruel thing sometimes a haven. the peasants,
don’t want it, while an inevitable to the warriors.those who
are lucky with their faith are here in their threshold down,
they are safer indeed in their stony sleep but, the reminants-
in this unfinished battle of ours make this war our war when-
no alternative we got alas! the battle is unfinished.
It has no ending, war is not won by victory.

For What She Had Done

She had to die.
This Omoo knew.
He also knew he could not kill her.
Not even try to kill her.
Those eyes. Would look at him. Not even try.
So, what to do?
There was one Ung. Who lived in a cave.
Beyond the hard mountain. A foul cave.
Far from the village.
Ung, who hunted with stones.
Who killed with his hands.
Who had killed two saber-tooths.
And one great bear, whose skin he now wore hanging from his hairy shoulders.
And Ung had killed men. Many men.
And, it was said, a woman.
Ung, who took the fresh meat left upon the flat rock for the Spirit of the Sky.
And the Spirit of the Sky would go hungry.
And bring pain and darkness to the village.
But none dare say words to Ung.
Who had killed two saber-tooths.
And one great bear. And men, many men.
And, it was said, a woman.
He went to Ung.
Yes, said Ung, I will kill her.
For what she has done, said Omoo.
For equal weight, said Ung, in bear meat or lizard skins.
She is a large woman, said Omoo.
Equal wait, said Ung. Now you must come and show her to me, that I may kill her.
I cannot, said Omoo.
Then how will I know her?
Her hair is long, said Omoo.
Her eyes burn like the pools of night.
Many have the long hair, said Ung.
Many have eyes like the pool of night.
She will be bathing, said Omoo.
Tomorrow, as the sun dies,
She will be bathing. Washing her long hair at the falling water.
Many women will be bathing, said Ung.
Many long-haired, night-eyed women.
How will I know it is she?
Omoo thought.
Ah, he said, she will be carrying flowers.
Bright hill flowers, that I shall gather and place in her hands, before she goes to bathe at the falling water.
Then you will know her.
Then you will kill her.
For equal weight, said Ung.
Yes, said Omoo, for equal weight.

And so was begun the custom
Of giving bouquets and corsages.

Without Just Cause.

My maiden aunt had little chance.
Because the man she was to wed
Was one of those who fell in France
listed as missing presumed dead.

Her happiness a casualty
which never figured in the news
She had to face reality
a future which she did not choose.

She was condemned to life alone
Because so many young men died
all chance of motherhood was gone.
She bore her fate with stoic pride.

She helped to raise her sister’s brood.
Her husband too unfit to go.
She mothered them as best she could
the only joy she’d ever know.

She was a treasure left unclaimed
a mother she would never be.
Only the Great War could be blamed
for many women’s misery.

She lived to see a ripe old age.
She died in nineteen forty one
just long enough to see the stage
prepared for another one.

Another war to end all wars
Just as the first Great War had been.
To her it was a hopeless cause
she saw the slaughter as obscene.

Young men will answer to the call
but womenfolk are left behind
To mourn their menfolk when they fall
A fate that’s very far from kind.

I think that she was glad to go
she knew from hard experience.
What other girls would come to know
when sorrow takes up residence.

Memorial Day For The War Dead

Memorial day for the war dead. Add now
the grief of all your losses to their grief,
even of a woman that has left you. Mix
sorrow with sorrow, like time-saving history,
which stacks holiday and sacrifice and mourning
on one day for easy, convenient memory.

Oh, sweet world soaked, like bread,
in sweet milk for the terrible toothless God.
"Behind all this some great happiness is hiding."
No use to weep inside and to scream outside.
Behind all this perhaps some great happiness is hiding.

Memorial day. Bitter salt is dressed up
as a little girl with flowers.
The streets are cordoned off with ropes,
for the marching together of the living and the dead.
Children with a grief not their own march slowly,
like stepping over broken glass.

The flautist's mouth will stay like that for many days.
A dead soldier swims above little heads
with the swimming movements of the dead,
with the ancient error the dead have
about the place of the living water.

A flag loses contact with reality and flies off.
A shopwindow is decorated with
dresses of beautiful women, in blue and white.
And everything in three languages:
Hebrew, Arabic, and Death.

A great and royal animal is dying
all through the night under the jasmine
tree with a constant stare at the world.

A man whose son died in the war walks in the street
like a woman with a dead embryo in her womb.
"Behind all this some great happiness is hiding."

The Great Divide

In the canyons of the great divide
Familiar places that we can run and hide
Are filled with strangers
Walking in our houses alone
In the great divide
Nothing to decide
No one else to care for or love
In the great divide
You wont fit in too well
On the horses of the carousel
She rides alone with you and me
She rides like she knows
Wherever she goes, well be there
On the carousel
Life is going well
Anyone can tell were in love
On the carousel
Youre gonna like the way you feel
You and i, we got caught down there
In the twisted canyons of the great divide
We walked the floor
Now we dont go there anymore
In the great divide
Nothin to decide
No one else to care for or love
In the great divide
I dont fit in too well
In the great divide
Nothin to decide
No one else to care for or love
In the great divide
You wont fit in too well
