Retracing A Happening
Retracing a happening
Afternoon at the big hospital, far from home
I sat on my bed wearing a new pajama;
tomorrow, the surgery. From my window I could
see the zoo and cable cars going overhead so
punters could admire animals from above; but
think if a car fell into the tiger enclosure.
I had a packet of fags in the bedside drawer,
thought of sneaking into the loo, but someone
had removed the packet and lighter too.
I was in a strange mood, like I had hypnotized
myself and not me who sat on the bed like a lamb
that knows nothing of the morrow.
A brisk nurse came gave me a pill and a glass of
water, when I awoke my throat was sore, but
they wouldn´t give me water and I hated those
who had done this to me.
Three days later, a day in May, they let me go.
Dressed in shorts, open necked shirt I took a taxi to
the bus terminal. Driver helped me out of the car,
and I made slow progress up some steps to the ticket
office. A woman came helped me to find the right bus
and she carried my bag. Must have fallen asleep when
I woke up the bus had arrived to my home town and
took a taxi to the local hospital where the trek began;
my car was there but I could not drive it, chest too sore
and I worried about the stitches. A neighbour looked
after my dog feed and let her into the house at night.
The dog knew I was near so I took another taxi home.
glad to see me, she knew I was ill and didn´t jump up
and she slept in the doorway of the bedroom making
sure that no harm came to me.

Waiting for the bus.....(for Karen)
The market place was closin'
my feet were nearly frozen
I tried to see the bus come through the snow.
But even though I strained
no bus ever came
and I wished I were in bed, that night,
back home
Then behold, we saw a Taxi
Mother said 'oh should we,
baby's cold, ain't that what money's for? '
So she held up a free hand
and hailed that taxi man.
I'd never been in a taxi cab before.
It was big and bright and black,
and we sat up at the back,
the man who drove it was so very nice.
I snuggled up to mum
She said ‘you warmer hon? '
And I fell fast asleep upon her lap.
It was the best ride I'd ever had
in that black taxi cab.
I thought my mum
the best that there could be!
When I was three
and she hailed a cab for me.

Taxis
The horse is used as a taxi in a certain land,
The donkey is used as a taxi in a certain land,
The camel is used as a taxi in a certain land,
The cow is used as a taxi in a certain land,
The elephant is used as a taxi in a certain land,
And of all the forms of taxis in this world!
But the animals had been very useful to mankind.

Early Morning Cold Taxi
3:36, its cold, I know Im growing old,
With lifes best side on the downward slope,
Its in my own hands, I know Ill cope,
My girls with me and all my friends can see.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi.
Done it before, do it again,
Know from experience its not in vain,
Shes the best Ive had, I cannot see, what someone else can do to me.
Its a long way home but loves so warm, youll see.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi.
Early morning cold taxi,
Each time I do it, I feel so down and out,
Early morning cold taxi,
though my mind thinks strange Ill keep on, no doubt.
3:36, its cold, I know Im growing old,
One day well be wed,
This I know for its what she said,
Then no more will my mind be uneasy.
Early morning cold taxi,
Each time I do it, I feel so down and out,
Early morning cold taxi,
though my mind thinks strange Ill keep on, no doubt.
3:36, its cold, I know Im growing old,
One day well be wed,

Then no more will my mind be uneasy.
Here I am again,
Early morning cold taxi.

No, in Lethal Weapon I was a taxi cab driver that Mel jumps in front of the taxi and pulls me out of the car and steals the taxi. Then I did some other indie driving for some of the car sequences.

Neither Snow
When all of a sudden the city air filled with snow,
the distinguishable flakes
blowing sideways,
looked like krill
fleeing the maw of an advancing whale.
At least they looked that way to me
from the taxi window,
and since I happened to be sitting
that fading Sunday afternoon
in the very center of the universe,
who was in a better position
to say what looked like what,
which thing resembled some other?
Yes, it was a run of white plankton
borne down the Avenue of the Americas
in the stream of the wind,
phosphorescent against the weighty buildings.
Which made the taxi itself,
yellow and slow-moving,
a kind of undersea creature,
I thought as I wiped the fog from the glass,
and me one of its protruding eyes,
an eye on a stem
swiveling this way and that
monitoring one side of its world,
observing tons of water
tons of people
colored signs and lights
and now a wildly blowing race of snow.

Taxi In The Rain
Where have I been going
On this lost and rainy night
I, who have no home to go to
Waiting for a taxi in the rain
The grey earth sleeps
And lets me take my way
Alone amidst the crowd
Waiting for a taxi in the rain
I’ve come so far in search
Of what I have not found
Perhaps it is down this street
Waiting for a taxi in the rain
Grey and frozen faces
Pass me by unhurriedly
Turning their backs to the dreamer
Waiting for a taxi in the rain

Taxi! Taxi!
The hands on the clock seem to stick to the face
But the seconds are turning to minutes
And minutes to days
I try not to look at the grin on its face
But I know that it knows that I gotta get out
Of this place
Time to close the day
Time to lock the door
Time to greet the street
Im so happy Im walking on air
People staring but I dont care
Taxi, call a taxi, yellow taxi, taxi taxi
Dont take the subway dont go that way
'snot a safe way dont go that way
Gotta cross town dont want trouble
Got to get there on the double
Shell be waiting Ill be running
Shell be thinking Im not coming
I cant wait to talk to you
Tell you what Id like to do
Well find a little restaurant
A little vino for the ambiance
In the candlelight were holding hands
Time flies when you really
Dont want it to
The waiters are staring at me
But Ive only got eyes for you
Leave us alone we dont wanna go home
Put your chairs on the tables
We can let ourselves out when youve gone
Time to take your home
Time to say goodnight
We dont wanna part
Lets be together tonight
Lets be together tonight
Taxi, call a taxi, yellow taxi, taxi taxi
Dont take the subway dont go that way
'snot a safe way well go our way
Gotta cross town back to my place
Pull the shades down screw the rat race
Were alone now undercover
Hang the sign out dont disturb
Now Im really close to you
Tell you what I want to do
I wanna take you to a tropical place
Beneath the stars Ill see the love in your face
In the pale moonlight
Were holding hands
Following the footprints in the sand
Its been a hell of a day in the city
Now its time to get away

Taxi Grab
Shake a leg, its the big rush, cant find a taxi cant find a bus.
Bodies jammed in the underground evacuating london town.
Nowhere to put your feet as the big store shoppers and the pavements meet.
Red lights --- pin stripes --- short step shuffle into the night.
Tea time calls --- the bingo halls open at seven in the old front stalls.
How about a taxi grab.
Theres an empty cab by the taxi stand drivers in the caf washing his hands.
Big diesel idles --- the keys inside --- cmon sally lets take a ride.
Flag down --- uptown --- no sweat. for rush hour travel, its the best bet yet.
Taxi grab.

How Much Tequila
How much tequila did i drink last night?
It's really anybody's guess.
I poured them so fast,
I couldn't keep them in the glass,
But this morning i sure am a mess.
My head is four or five times its normal size
And i got this big old cactus stuck between my eyes.
I can't recall a single thing i did or said
Or the names of all these people sleeping in this bed.
Tell me how, tell me how, tell me how, tell me how,
Tell me how much tequila did i drink last night?
How did i get these cuts and bruises all over my body?
I must have fallen down somehow.
I believe it had something to do with karate
-- it's all coming back to me now.
I was standing in a bar with king kong's cousin,
He must have been seven foot three.
His elbow gave me a bump, and so i said "hey, chump,
Would you like to step outside with me?"
Tell me how, tell me how, tell me how, tell me how,
Tell me how much tequila did i drink last night?
My mouth is filled with cotton and my brain is sore.
I left last night's dinner on this morning's floor.
My stomach is swollen and my eyeballs shrunk.
I drank so much that my hair got drunk.
I see a big old worm about ten feet long
Hallucinating purple cows.
Somebody moved the furniture while i was gone.
Uh oh, this is not my house.
I could call us a taxi on the telephone
If i only knew where we are.
I guess i'm gonna have to drive myself back home
As soon as i can find the car.
Tell me how, tell me how, tell me how, tell me how,
Tell me how much tequila did i drink last night?

A Journey Of Confusion (Fun Poem 90)
It stared like any journey
with expectations running high,
a two hours journey
from one point to another.
Nothing complicated in that.
Just over an hour in
and the journey goes to pot,
you drive passed the turning
that you were suppose to take.
You turn around midst honking horns
and go back again.
You think you are on the right road,
and then you find you are not.
Being a man, you are too proud
to ask the directions to where you are going.
You drive around in circles
and the hours tick on by.
Four hours later, you are confused and totally lost.
You pull to the side of the road
and all you want to do is cry,
then you get a brainwave,
find a taxi and follow him.
You look for a taxi
and there is not one to be found,
never one when you need one
and dozens when you do not.
Finally, you get a taxi
and begin to follow him,
finally getting to your destination.
Five hours it has taken
and not the estimated two.
You are also slightly lighter
after paying the taxi fare.
The only thing you can rejoice from
is that you are there,
a few grey hairs more
and a lot wiser throughout.
What about the journey back?
You do not want to even think about that.

Dog Power
Dog Power
Abandoned she was and hungry so I took her home. she was scared and hid under
the kitchen sink. I put water and food out and went to bed. She ate it all.
In the morning she came out and made it clear she wanted to go out. Well she did
her business and came back in. When she was two years old she grabbed a packet
of cigarettes from the table and tore it up. So I stopped smoking. People had
implored me to stop, no awhile, she did the trick. I never liked having visitors in
the evening but was too polite to say so. Well. She fixed that to. The only thing she
hated was having a bath. After having one she pretended I didn’t exist until
neighbour told her how nice she looked. She didn’t like female dogs, male dogs
she made short shrift of. She woke me up in the morning and if I sat still too long
writing she took me for walk. She had trained me so well that the day she died
I felt quite helpless and didn’t know what to do the following day.

I Realized
He sat on the step asking for change
'I haven't got any spare'
pretend I don't care
wonder how he got there
ask him? Do I dare?
He tells me hes slow
at an all time low
kicked out of hostels
three times in a row
I tell him I've gotta go
my taxis waiting...
In the back seat
I speak to the girl I'm dating
'whats with the tramp? '
I tell her 'I'm loving, not hating'.
My flirting's not working
the taxi driver laughs
sees a couple, taking separate paths
life's like algebra, not making sense
always hated maths, always clothed
I asked if she takes naked baths
we were over before it started
called the taxi driver Moses
as he drove us to the red sea
we parted, we red it
told him I gave her a try
put my finger up to her
as I waved her goodbye
I realized...
I'm like the Manchester weather
I'm cold...
he continued the journey and drove
he drove me to Wimslow road
curry mile...
I staggered out in my usual drunken style
looked at Kansas then gave the sky a smile
never realized I was so drunk
she must have hated me
I must have stunk,
why did I say that?
this chickens gonna make me fat
I'm so dizzy, 'Yo! '
'Wo! You gave me a fright'
'got any change? '
'I might'
I gave him a pound
I realized he was the tramp from before
he walked into the night.

New Delhi
New delhi at three a.m.
Just arrived by k.l.m.
Left the airport in the heat
In the bus strange people meet
Driving through the starless night
Passing very unusual sights
Left the bus at five to five
Caught a taxi started to drive
He thought I was a millionaire
And accordingly put up the fare
Dawn was breaking in the east
Causing this hot night to cease
Mosquitos buzzing in my ears
Grating sound of clashing gears
Burning rubber filled the air
Taxi driver began to swear
The heat was burning my head was turning
It was then the car broke down
Just on the outskirts of town
A camel from the dhrangadhra
Silently passed by our car
A vulture circled high above in the air
I had to shade my eyes to cover the glare
Sweating in the plastic seats
Hard to breathe in the increasing heat
Lying back my mind started to
Drift into an uneasy sleep
I dreamt I was in new delhi
Slowly dying of la grippe

Taxi, Taxi
All these streets are never ending
Tie them in a knot
Drive me through a red light waiting
For everyone to stop
Sing to me like pavarotti
Sing to me of spain
Take me to you operetta
And make it rain
Chorus:
Taxi, taxi give me a ride
Im going to take you
To the other side
Taxi, taxi turn off you light
Im going to ride with you all night
Take me to your meditation
Take me to your door
Show me loves sweet revelation
Lying on your floor
Hole me in your arms forever
Take me to the end
Drive me to the edge of nowhere
And sing again
Chorus
Youre as cool as colorado
And orpheus on fire
Crash the car into a rainbow
Here with me tonight
All the satellites are shining
In the starry sky
I can feel your arms surround me
Higher and higher
Chorus

The Promised Land
I left my home in norfolk, virginia, california on my mind
I straddled that greyhound and rode him into raleigh, and on across caroline
I had motor trouble that turned into a struggle, halfway across alabama
And that hound broke down and left me all stranded in downtown birmingham
Right away I bought me a through train ticket, ridin across mississippi clean
And I was on the midnight flyer out of birmingham, smokin into new orleans
Somebody helped me get out of louisiana, just to help me get to houston town
There are people there who care a little bout me
And they wont let a poor boy down
Sure as youre born, they bought me a silk suit, they put luggage in my hand
And I woke up high over albuquerque on a jet to the promised land
Workin on a t-bone steak, I had a party flyin over to the golden state
When the pilot told me in thirteen minutes
He would get us at the terminal zone
Swing low, chariot, come down easy, taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings, and let me make it to the telephone
Los angeles, give me norfolk, virginia, tidewater 41009
And tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin
And the poor boys on the line
(repeats 2x)
And tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin
And their big boys on the line

Before you bloom
I wonder if I'll see you in the future
will we cross paths
and commuinate face to face
not over a computer?
I know we grew apart
but perhaps
when we've finished growing we can make a new start
If I have money ill open up a bar
so we can have that lunch
hey
we can go for a drive to the coutry side in my car
we can go for a boat ride
we can sit on the hill top in platfields park
getting drunk in the sun until it becomes dark
we can leave the car
and we can get a taxi.
Your asleep on my shoulder
Im looking out of the window wishing upon a star
I awake you when we arrive
and when you get out Im left with the smell of your perfume
the driver smiles
and I tell him
I didnt go with you
because I know you havnt got the room
because youve got a husband and two kids
we are two friends
you are the love I was once with
we were two kids.
The driver takes me back to where I used to live
Im a stranger in a home thats a sweat home
the neighbours are new and Im stood all alone
in the dark looking,
staring at my house
I dont wanna knock I tell myself they're out
I stand staring
still
the lights are on but I know
it means theres nobody home
and I
I'm ready to go when the blinds move to the side
a ten year old boy looks at me and waves good bye
he smiles
he looks happy
he doesnt look sad
yet Im looking at a house where theres no mum
theres no dad.
Going to the park to get my car
I ring you
I remember what you said
I let you go.
I knew you had to put the kids to bed.
I'm Sitting on the hill
I'm whishing I was looking into your eyes
instead
Im alone
watching a lonley sunrise
boy and girl they are on a boat ride
and I can still smell your perfume
us kids
we're like flowers
we bloom
We do
I just whish I'd have bloomed with you.

Still Invoking the Protector of Angels
With your newspaper folded
And set aside,
It was your last night of reading
And trying to live your life as normal.
Later that night,
You would fall twice to the floor
Trying to make it to a bedside commode,
And I knew you wouldn't leave your bed again.
After that, you lived a few more days
Uncomfortably in your bed,
Eating and drinking very little,
Gazing upward and to the wall,
Most certainly seeing angels.
On your last full day on earth,
A nurse-aide came to the house
To give you a bedside bath and it was like the lady
Who anointed Jesus with perfume for his burial;
She was very gentle and kind but there was a tear in your eye.
Aunt Maxine arrived, a planned visit,
To see her sister, your wife, after a long absence
Caused by distance and age;
This alone was sad with so much of mom already gone
With the trial of fire she's endured with her Parkinson's disease.
At 11: 00 P.M. that night,
Everyone went to bed;
I gave you medicine mixed in pudding
After telling you I had pudding for you to try.
You swallowed your pudding and told me it wasn't bad.
Even in these last few hours you had sweetness for others
But nothing left for yourself.
I woke up at 1: 30A.M.
And you were breathing heavily and strained
With your oxygen off; you were rocking and saying no
Aunt Maxine woke as well.
I reconnected your oxygen and called a nurse
To reevaluate you for pain.
The nurse arrived about an hour later
And prepared ativan and morphine
Which she gave you;
The nurse didn't seem to think you were in great pain
But the way you were holding onto your bed rail and rocking and saying no
Made me sick to my heart that you were.
After the nurse left and aunt Maxine went back to bed,
I kissed your forehead and told you, you were a good boy;
So characteristic of your humble sweetness,
You merely replied, "I hope so."
I then lied down on the floor near your bed
And prayed to Jesus that your journey would not be long
And with terrible pain.
I somehow fell asleep in my sadness and fear
And with your oxygen machine at my one side
And mom's monitor on the other.
At 7: 20 A.M. I heard Aunt Maxine with Mom,
I think Aunt Maxine called for me to come get mom.
I rose from the floor
And I didn't hear you struggling;
I immediately went to your bed;
Your oxygen was off again,
Your chest was calm and still
But your hand remained clutching the bed rail.
I'm certain, there were times
In the last nearly fifty years
When I was a burden to you, sweet man,
But you were definitely
Not a burden to me
In the last two and a half.
All I want to do is talk with you again
About music or cars or politics or the weather;
I merely desire to see you sitting at the kitchen table
Or setting your newspaper down to make your way to the porch.
I'll try to hold onto this love for as long as I can, dear friend.
