Rednecks
Rednecks
Long time ago when a man called Goldwater was
running for president, I was walking along a road
just outside Mobile, Alabama. What I was doing
there is long forgotten but I recall having a day off
from my ship, and going from bar to bar.
I did notice that the sidewalk was weedy clearly
people did no walking. A pickup truck stopped,
three burley men wanted to give me a lift, dared
not refuse they had gun racks and armed for civil
war that steadfastly refused to appear.
They asked me about Goldwater whom I had read
about in “Newsweek” but I stated ignorance.
They drove me back to Mobile and I assured them
I loved America; gave me a six-pack, warned me
not to speak to black people and commies.
I was told they were rednecks; which I know see
as sort of countryside workers with broken cars
in the front yard. They did look like the men who
bullied and broke shop windows, own by Jewish
shopkeepers, before the last world war two.

Going Mobile
I'm goin' home
And when I wanna go home
I'm goin' mobile
Well, I'm gonna find a home
And we'll see how it feels
Goin' mobile
Keep me movin'
I can pull up by the curb
I can make it on the road
Goin' mobile
I can stop in any street
And talk with people that we meet
Goin' mobile
Keep me movin'
Out in the woods
Or in the city
It's all the same to me
When I'm drivin' free, the world's my home
When I'm mobile
Hee, hoo!
beep beep!
Play the tape machine
Make the toast and tea
When I'm mobile
Well I can lay in bed
With only highway ahead
When I'm mobile
Keep me movin'
Keep me movin'
Over 50
Keep me groovin'
Just a hippie gypsy
Come on move now
Movin'
Keep me movin', yeah
Keep me movin', groovin', groovin', yeah
Movin', Yeah
Mobile, mobile, mobile, mobile, ...
I don't care about pollution
I'm an air-conditioned gypsy
That's my solution
Watch the police and the tax man miss me
I'm mobile
Oooooh, yeah, hee!

Alabama Sundown
(Dave Kirby and Danny Morrison)
The cold December wind seems bent on rockin' New York City
The town that's got me down to my last dime
And everywhere I go, the people seem in such a hurry
To keep this Mobile girl from feelin' fine
Chorus:
Lord, what I'd give to see an Alabama sundown
The sun just seemed to drop in Mobile Bay
New York town has got a gifted way to keep a girl down
But that never was the Mobile way, no, no
That never was the Mobile way
A flashing sign says that you can rent a bed for just a dollar
In anybody's town, that price is cheap
It's a shame to know a girl would ever fall down to my standards
'Cause I need ninety cents to go to sleep
Repeat Chorus
I felt so big the day I left that Mobile couldn't hold me
I thought there had to be a better way
But if I could find that man that first called Lady Luck a lady
That gentleman would surely learn to pray
Repeat Chorus Twice & Fade

Went back home again
this sucks gotta pack up and leave again
say goodbye to all my friends
can't say when I'll be there again
It's time now to turn around
Turn my back on
EVERYTHING (turn my back on) everything....
[chorus]
Everythings changing when I turn around all out of my control I'm a mobile.
Everythings changing when I turn around all out of my control I'm a mobile.
Start back at this life
Stretch myself back into the vibe
I'm waking up to say I've tried
Instead of waking up to another TV GUIDE
It's time now to turn around
Turn and walk on this crazy ground oh oh oh....
[chorus]
Everythings changing when I turn around all out of my control I'm a mobile
Everythings changing out of what I know everywhere I go I'm a mobile
I'm a mobile
Hanging from the ceiling lifes a mobile spinning round
with mixed feelings crazy and wild ...
sometimes I wanna SCREAM OUT LOUD ....
Everythings changing
everywhere I go
All out of my control
Everythings changing
everywhere I go out of what I know
la la la la la la (la la)
la la la la la la (la la)
la la la la la la (la la la)
la la la la la la
[chorus]
Everythings changing when I turn around all out of my control I'm a mobile

The 'Poem A Day' Project - Day 16
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’m feeling all alone
I can’t connect with my friends out there
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I miss its ringing tone
I’ve searched for it everywhere
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve lost my mobile phone
And now I cannot roam
I must stay near in case it rings
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I do not wish to moan
It has numbers, dates and all kinds of things
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve lost my mobile phone
And now I guess I’m prone
To wander like a lost zombie
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve lost my mobile phone
I’ve no mind of my own
Without it there to organise me
I’ve lost my mobile phone

Black Angel
One day in my life
I was walking along the road
then suddenly I saw this bright garmented angel
looking at me
with a smile on his face
so serene his posture was
I utterly lost my words
to speak anything
at the sight
so grandeur and in awe
I asked to myself
what in the world do I have to do
with this....
then the angel quietly held my hand
and led me to his world
a bit dark though clean however
I was abiding with him
for some time
until the time came
and I took off for
some far off lands
never to return to him again
but I do still remember
the joy he shared with me
the caring he gave to me
though it was quite a long ago
I still remember the smile on his face
and a little hello
a wink that it was.....
such a blissful moment
I recall still as the most
awesome moment that had ever happened
in my life
How can I forget that moment
and all the joy we shared together
with the angel right beside me
though some others might have been
a bit jealous of us
and tried to take us apart from each other
we stayed together in that heavenly bliss
But some really took us apart
by no means we wanted that to happen
but it did happen
so I no longer have that joy
nor bliss that I shared with this angel
that dark angel
in black clothes
with black smile on his face
with some mysterious look on his face
which I still can't comprehend
Ah! Where is he now?
Would he be thinking about me?
Would he have forgotten about me and
all the joy we shared together
in that some far away places
Only God can answer this questions..
for He is the one that made it happen
But today I recall the long-gone days again
and reminiscent it again
thinking about that beautiful creature
the black angel he was...

Dont
Walking round this metropolis
With its buildings that reach to the clouds
There must be millions of people out there
Walking round with their heads bowed
This city kills me, but it thrills me
Now somethings gone and held up the crowd
Theyre pointing at a man standing high on a ledge
And somebody just cried out loud
Dont look down at the people below, oh
Dont look down
Its a long way to fall and Id sure like to know
What made it happen, sure makes you think
Must have been something special
To send him to the brink
Down here on the sidewalk, hes clearly in view
Then a voice shouts up to him
Try thinking it through but whatever you do
Chorus:
Dont look down
At the people below, oh
Dont look down, things might start looking up
You just never know
Hes heard the cries of the lunatics facing defeat
The cheers of the winners
Who are dancing in the street
Perhaps the crime and corruption finally got through
And the violence of the city
Just broke him in two
Now a voice from the queue shouts
Chorus
Dont look down, dont look down
Down here on the sidewalk
Its stopped all our lives
People are talking instead of just walking by
Before this happened it was just another day
Now people are talking instead of walking away
Now were gripped by this tragedy
Our blood starts to pump as we all shout together
Dont jump, dont jump
Chorus
Dont look down, we all shouted out, oh
Dont look down
Its a long way to fall and Id sure like to know
What made it happen, guess well never know
Now the suns come out
Looks like hes standing on a rainbow
Hes in the heavens, Im standing on the ground
Saying dont look down

President Kennedy
(sleepy john estes)
Late one friday evening everybody was sad
We lost the best president we ever had
But hes gone home, gone back home
Hes staying away too long
Rode from town to town holdin up for our rights
Some low down rascal took the presidents life
But hes gone home, gone back home
Hes staying away too long
Mrs. kennedy got a mansion on the island, stayed 9 months, all shed be
She have another mansion, soon as she reach washington, d.c.
But hes gone home, gone back home
Hes staying away too long
Everybody votes, they dont know whats goin on
If goldwater get it, we wont have no home
But hes gone home, gone back home
Hes staying away too long
While horses and cars all in a row
I think mr. kennedy have a right to this long white robe
But hes gone home, gone back home
Hes staying away too long

Meet In The Middle
(chaplin hartford/jim foster/don pfrimmer)
It was seven hundred fenceposts from your place to ours
Neither one of us was old enough to drive a car
Sometimes it was raining, sometimes it would shine
We wore out that gravel road between your house and mine
Id start walking your way
Youd start walking mine
Wed meet in the middle
neath that old georgia pine
Wed gain a lot of ground
cause wed both give a little
And their aint no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Its been seven years tomorrow since we said our vows
Under that old pine tree, you ought to see it now
Standing in the back yard reminding me and you
That if we dont see eye to eye theres something we can do
Id start walking your way
Youd start walking mine
Wed meet in the middle
neath that old georgia pine
Wed gain a lot of ground
cause wed both give a little
And their aint no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Babe I love the way we work it out
Thats what loves about
Id start walking your way
Youd start walking mine
Wed meet in the middle
neath that old georgia pine
Wed gain a lot of ground
cause wed both give a little
And their aint no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Id start walking your way
Youd start walking mine
Wed meet in the middle
neath that old georgia pine
Wed gain a lot of ground
cause wed both give a little
And their aint no road to long
When you meet in the middle
Id start walking your way
Youd start walking mine

Cars Are Cars
Words & music by paul simon 1983
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Similarly made. similarly sold
In a motorcade. abandoned when theyre old
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Engine in the front. jack in the back
Wheels take the brunt. pinion and a rack
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
But people are strangers
They change with the curve
From time zone to time zone
As we can observe
They shut down their borders
And think theyre immune
They stand on their differences
And shoot at the moon
But cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Drive em on the left. drive em on the right
Susceptible to theft in the middle of the night
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
I once had a car
That was more like a home
I lived in it, loved in it
Polished its chrome
If some of my homes
Had been more like my car
I probably wouldnt have
Travelled this far
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world
Cars are cars all over the world

Mans Road
Written by jimmy webb, 1982
Found on the last unicorn soundtrack and your move (french import only).
Horizon rising up to meet the purple dawn
Dust demon screaming, bring an eagle to lead me on
For in my heart I carry such a heavy load
Here I am on mans road, walking mans road, walking mans road
Im hungry, weary, but I cannot lay me down
The rain comes, dreary, but theres no shelter I have found
It will be a long time till I find my abode
Here I am on mans road, walking mans road
Moon rising, disguising lonely streets in gay displays
The stars fade, the night shade falls and makes the world afraid
It waits in silence for the sky to explode
Here I am on mans road, walking mans road, walking mans road
Walking mans road, walking mans road, walking mans road

Watching The World Go Past
I sit on the front step
Just watching the world go past
People walking
People talking
I see people running from themselves
People walking their best friends
Children playing with others hearts
Teenage girls crying over the past
I just and watch the sun set
Signalling that a new day will begin soon
I watch the rising of the moon
And the dots getting ever so brighter
Watch people fall in love
People smile as if nothings wrong
I watch all the people who have nothing to do
Watching people who have nothing to loose
I sit and watch the different lives form
Watching the new scene starting
The new lives beginning with a smile
The lives coming to and end
I sit on the front step
Just watching the world go past
People walking
People talking

Long Way Home
Its hard to say from where you stand
Exactly when it all began
But someplace theres a point you cross the line
You see the tears than stain your face
Mirrored in your make-up case
And know its time to leave this place behind
Chorus:
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
Trying to retrace your steps
All too easy to forget
Just which way to go
Its a long way home
Outside the sky is threatening
You slowly gather up your things
And wonder how you ever will explain
Walking out so self-assured
Yeah, you were gonna change the world
Walking back, a child in the rain
Chorus:
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
How can you retrace the steps
Youve been trying to forget
Still its time to go
And its a long way home
And if you lose your way
Just keep your eye upon that endless broken line
Throw bag beneath the bus
Sit among the curious
It happens to the best of us, you know
Chorus:
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
Its a long way home
Starting to retrace your steps
You learn to live with your regrets
Next stop heaven knows
Its a long way home
Such a long way
Its a long way home

The Deserter
Mr. President
I'm writing you a letter
that perhaps you will read
If you have the time.
I've just received
my call-up papers
to leave for the front
Before Wednesday night.
Mr. President
I do not want to go
I am not on this earth
to kill wretched people.
It's not to make you mad
I must tell you
my decision is made
I am going to desert.
Since I was born
I have seen my father die
I have seen my brothers leave
and my children cry.
My mother has suffered so,
that she is in her grave
and she laughs at the bombs
and she laughs at the worms.
When I was a prisoner
they stole my wife
they stole my soul
and all my dear past.
Early tomorrow morning
I will shut my door
on these dead years
I will take to the road.
I will beg my way along
on the roads of France
from Brittany to Provence
and I will cry out to the people:
Refuse to obey
refuse to do it
don't go to war
refuse to go.
If blood must be given
go give your own
you are a good apostle
Mr. President.
If you go after me
warn your police
that I'll be unarmed
and that they can shoot.

5th Avenue
Written by gerry beckley, 1984
Found on perspective.
Walking down 5th avenue
I saw him walking there with you
People see and people talk
Word travels fast round my block
Might just save you the price of writing
I could save you an hour or two
Walking down 5th avenue
Walking down 5th avenue
Dont know what to ask of you
My mind is gettin so confused
Even when I really try
Keeps sounding like Im saying goodbye
Somewhere deep in my heart Im hurtin
cause I keep on remembering you
Walking down 5th avenue
Walking down 5th avenue
Such a long way to go
How many times must I look up and say
What kind of fool am i
But I cant turn my back on the times that we shared
No matter how I try
Walking down 5th avenue
Cant seem to shake the thought of you
Even in the dark of night
Your memories of shining light
Though Im tryin to change direction
I pray what I saw aint true
Walking down 5th avenue
Walking down 5th avenue
Such a long way to go
Do, do, do, do ...

Farm On The Freeway
Nine miles of two-strand topped with barbed wire
Laid by the father for the son.
Good shelter down there on the valley floor,
Down by where the sweet stream run.
Now they might give me compensation...
Thats not what Im chasing. I was a rich man before yesterday.
Now all I have got is a cheque and a pickup truck.
I left my farm on the freeway.
Theyre busy building airports on the south side...
Silicon chip factory on the east.
And the big roads pushing through along the valley floor.
Hot machine pouring six lanes at the very least.
Now, they say they gave me compensation...
Thats not what Im chasing. I was a rich man before yesterday.
Now all I have left is a broken-down pickup truck.
Looks like my farm is a freeway.
They forgot they told us what this old land was for.
Grow two tons the acre, boy, between the stones.
This was no southfork, it was no ponderosa.
But it was the place that I called home.
They say they gave me compensation...
Thats not what Im chasing. I was a rich man before yesterday.
And what do I want with a million dollars and a pickup truck?
When I left my farm under the freeway.

You Lost Me
You lost me in your dreams tonight
Because there was a fog in the sky that covered everything
So nobody could see anything
But I know that the fog is bad for the people that have to drive
Because they can't see anything either
Some people will have to sit in the cars at the road
And wait for the fog to lift today
But how long I don't know?
I believe that it will take a long time for the fog to lift today

Rednecks
It was down in Jackson County
Back in 1959,
I was sitting in a parking lot
And necking Peggy Jean,
We'd been breathing hot and heavy,
'Til we misted up the windshield,
Then footsteps started walking round
My Daddy's Oldsmobile.
Peggy buttoned up her top, while I
Sat bolt upright, and listened,
Then the door, it sprang wide open
And a hand came reaching in,
Then it grabbed me by the collar,
Dragged me out, although I hollered,
And this guy began to kick me
Like he wants to do me in!
It was dark, but there was moonlight, and
I saw he wore a jersey with
Those hoops of red and white just like
The college football team,
He was big and mean and dopey,
And he tried to grab and choke me
Then he hit me and he bit me, said:
'You like my Peggy Jean? '
She screamed and ran right over
Slapped his face, and yelled: 'You Doofer!
I ain't never been your gal and you
Ain't never been my man! '
So he stopped and stared right at her
Looking mad, like some Mad Hatter,
Then he mumbled that his Peggy Jean:
'She must have cut and ran! '
I took my wounded shoulder to the
Hospital in Boulder, where
They cleaned it, disinfected it,
Then sent me straight back home.
But my head was fairly spinnin'
And my Peggy Jean was grinnin'
'Cos she thought it cute I'd fight for her -
I drove back home alone.
My shoulder wouldn't fix, it
Wept and burned, I scratched, it itched,
And for some days my joints were stiff
As if he'd given me some spore,
But my eyes were twice as bright, I saw
Right through the dark at night,
And I could run, right out of sight
Like I could never run before!
A month went slowly by, as I
Thought up some alibi for why
I hadn't seen my Peggy Jean,
Or phoned and left a note.
But I didn't want to see her, so
She joined the Cheerleaders, then
Went necking with this football guy
To try and get my goat.
But then one day I saw her, in a
Dress, right off the shoulder
And she had a big red love bite
On her neck - No argument!
So I said: 'Them dang mosquito's
Getting big as hot Darito's,
Why, I guess you're now a Redneck, '
And she knew just what I meant.
I lay low about a month, just
Messed around and played a hunch,
Got my Jerry Lee collection up
And Buddy Holly too,
Then I went off to the Prom to see
Just what was going on;
There were rednecks all around me
Like some great big Redneck zoo!
They were multiplying - Heck!
Great big bites on every neck,
And their eyes had gone all yeller
And their teeth were getting long,
And so over grits and chitlins
I asked Grandpaw, who was whittling,
'Have you ever made a silver bullet, Gramps? '
He said: 'You're wrong! '
(I had thought: 'He's getting old,
But he really should be told...')
But he didn't need no telling of
The Rednecks in the town,
He had seen it all before,
Long before the Second War,
And he looked at me, and says:
'Those pesky Vamps are going down! '
'What you need are wooden stakes,
Ash or aspen's what it takes,
Though I thought we'd killed 'em all in
Jackson County's last big wake,
When your father was a lad,
They were here, and things were bad,
But we staked them 'til they filled
The cemetery by the lake
So I told him what I'd seen,
All the Rednecks, where I'd been,
And we took to walking through the woods
To spy on where they're at,
But the moon above was bright,
In its beam I caught a sight
Of my Gramps, as he turned hairy
Right there, underneath his hat.
He dropped down on all his fours
While I felt my face and jaws,
And I suddenly had paws,
Right beneath the haloed moon,
I was soon, to my surprise
Just a wolf, in some disguise,
So we loped downtown together,
Started howlin' out of tune.
'I knew when you were bit
This would be the way of it,
I knew you'd end up one thing or
Another, so it's cool!
But these vampires, they need culling
Cause they're always multiplying, and they
Never learn -
In Jackson County...
Werewolves Rule! '

This All Too Mobile Home
I get four or five miles a gallon in this old car
I don't care as long as it takes me to where you are
You ain't leavin' no tracks to follow
It's driving me mad but what else can I do?
This all too mobile home
Is calling out for you
You were thirty miles out of Phoenix on a three-day drive
When you left to find the angular number five
You slammed the door behind you
You walked out on the life that we once knew
This all too mobile home
Is calling out for you
[Solo]
Well, they say it's Salt lake city
But now we're man on man
Take your hand outta my pocket
Don't put it in again
You get married in San Diego
And these times that roll out need to be brought on through
This all to mobile home
Is calling after you
Well, this all too mobile home is killing me
And there's nothing that you can do to set me free
Darling, oh now, darling, come back to me...

A walk
I'm walking down this road, looking for a new way,
Looking to what's ahead, I move without delay,
I'm walking down this road, blind to where it'll take me,
All I know is the past, ain't where I want to be,
I'm walking down this road, hoping to start anew,
I have come so far now, I've got to continue,
I'm walking down this road, toward what I pursue,
Certain that my failure, has been long overdue.
