Light Shoes with Straps
In Aruba I bought a pair of sandals, with leather straps and
shiny steel buckles; I wore them with white ankle socks.
Coming home from the sea in June no one in my town had
sandals like mine. Mind, not much call for sandals in
Liverpool, winter rain, soggy streets, hailstones and so on.
When I went back to sea, I left the sandals under my bed
to wear when returning, but when I came back brother had
worn them to death, broken straps and rusty buckles.
I was very sad, but then I met a girl called Sandra and since
it was October, too cold for sandals and white ankle socks,
I got over the loss.

Sandals
She wears
sandals.
Her mother
bought her
the leather
sandals
as a birthday
present;
She presents
the sandals
to the
world.
Not to
me.
I feel
like
an outstripped
sandal
when
she
takes
off
the sandals
in
my
bed.

The protection
Sandals protect feet.
What would protect the sandals?
Mother protects the child.
Who would protect the mother?
Sandals and mother in their vocations,
They mind not their protection.

Marcella
(hey yeah marcella)
(hey yeah marcella)
Shes a bright girl
(hey yeah marcella)
Hey hey
(hey yeah marcella)
Mystic maidens more than soft and sexy
She can mess my mind with the stuff that she knows
Her new found beauty goes beyond her covering
And sets a flame in her soul
One arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes thatll knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
(hey yeah marcella)
(hey yeah marcella)
Shes a bright girl bom bom bom bom bom
(hey yeah marcella)
Hey hey
(hey yeah marcella)
Brave new woman standing proud and dazzling
Grips the goal that eluded her soul
Direction bringing her to nows tomorrow
And my love for her still grows
One arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes thatll knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
(hey yeah marcella)
(hey yeah marcella)
Shes a bright girl
(hey yeah marcella)
Hey hey
(hey yeah marcella)
One arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes that knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
One arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes that knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
When she puts one arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes that knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
When she puts one arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes that knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet
When she puts one arm over my shoulder
Sandals dance at my feet
Eyes that knock you right over
Ooo marcellas so sweet

The Giver
You bound strong sandals on my feet,
You gave me bread and wine,
And sent me under sun and stars,
For all the world was mine.
Oh, take the sandals off my feet,
You know not what you do;
For all my world is in your arms,
My sun and stars are you.

At The Taoist Temple
the steps are straight
guided by arrows
the stairs always go down
to the bottom of things
surprising why the man
with white socks and
black sandals got lost still
asking 'where's the way? '
to the parking area
just below the stuffed storks
on a man made
pond.

Love is barren with out memento
Many a script,
Many a gift,
Did I present to you.
You paid me nil.
Acceptance by you,
A forbidden soul,
Itself is the token
Of remittance.
However, I want
From you a memento
To show to others
Your love for me,
Without which
What is love worth?
Give me your fallen hair.
Give me your bitten nail.
Bharata was proud of
Rama’s love by his sandals.

Jane and You and the Gatekeeper
You sat with Jane
on the grass
in the field
beneath the Downs
she was looking
at the sky
and you
were watching her
her profile
her hair pulled back
in a ponytail
her eyes bright
as new coins
her pale blue dress
and white ankle socks
and brown sandals
she followed a butterfly
fluttering by
a Gatekeeper
she said
where?
you said
there that butterfly
it's called a Gatekeeper
you turned to watch
the butterfly
she had pointed to
as it fluttered off
down the field
stopping now and then
to land on flowers
I love butterflies
she said
how do you know
all their names?
you asked
I read Daddy's books
he has a number of books
on butterflies and moths
she said
she lay back
on the grass
and stared
at the sky
you lay down
beside her
your hands
behind your head
she smelt of lavender
you noticed
you breathed it in
let it fill within you
don't you read books?
she asked
turning to look at you
taking in your white shirt
and blue jeans
I'm reading a book on birds
you said
I bought it in town
the other week
that's a start
she said smiling
I guess so
you said
I didn't realize
there were so many kinds
she studied you
as you spoke
resting her head
on her hand
maybe we can go looking
for nests next year
when they begin
to nest again
she said
ok
you said
not to touch though
she said
just to look
birds don't like
their nests disturbed
in London
we only have sparrows
and pigeons
you said
how boring
she said
you watched
her lips moving
as she spoke
her eyes on you
studying you
I'm glad you're here
you said
glad to be here
she replied
she touched her fingers
to her lips
and blew you a kiss
and you did likewise
seeing a new world
in her deep dark eyes.

You Can't Hide It All
The hair can be dyed
Textured and cut
The face can be made up
The rest nipped and tucked
However worn dry slightly
Cracked heels of feet stricking
Out of the back of
Fashionable sling- back sandals
Do not lie

Grandma's Wedding Shoes
I’m getting ready
For the garage sale tomorrow.
My grandma passed away
A few weeks ago.
She was a collector of things
You would never know.
I am thinking to sell.
Her pair of wedding shoes
She wore one morning
Sixty years ago
Walking slowly
In a long tailed wedding gown,
Holding a bouquet of flowers in her one hand
While her father held her other hand,
Soon to be given away to her beaux,
Walking beside her, proud, smiling,
In a wedding tuxedo.
Could she have wildly imagined then,
Thirty years later,
Her unwed daughter
Would give me up for adoption
Shortly after I was born?
My mom, a poor mother,
Could not face rasing me up.
I look at the pair of shoes,
They still look new to me.
She saved them as a treasure
In the original box, tucked
Under her wedding grown,
In her old leather suitcase
Made in some small,
Now a non-existent Texas’ town.
The shoes are high heeled,
Light brown, each with two leather straps
To go around ankles,
Some sort of a hybrid
Of dress shoes and sandals,
High fashion luxury of grandma’s days.
I look at them again
And I change my mind.
I will not sell them,
They are worth a fortune to me.
Sixty years ago,
After, “ I do, I do”,
The choir boy rang
the wedding bells
On top of the steeple.
That moment, my grandma
Was wearing these shoes.

Summers Here
Summers here
Im for that
Got my rubber sandals
Got my straw hat
Got my cold beer
Im just glad that Im here
Summers here
That suits me fine
It may rain today
But I dont mind
Its my favorite time of the year
And Im glad that Im here
Old man wintertime
He goes so slow
Its ten degrees below, you know
You can take your ice and snow
And let my balmy breezes blow
Yeah, the water is cold but Ive been in
Baby, lose the laundry and jump on in
I mean all gods children got skin
And its summer again
Old man wintertime
He goes so slow
Its ten degrees below, you know
You can take your ice and snow
And let my balmy breezes blow
Summers here
Im for that
Got my rubber sandals
Got my straw hat
Drinking cold beer
Man Im just that Im here
Its my favorite time of the year
And Im glad that Im here, yeah

The Confusion!
The closets full of clothes,
Which one to wear tomorrow,
So confused with color concept,
Checkered, floral and modern design,
Matching belt with right buckle,
Fine leather shoes, not dirtied,
A shelve overflows with sandals,
Slippers, boots and sneakers,
Sometimes feel like crying,
With the confusion of thoughts,
Of not able to choose and wear,
Those who have a few or two,
Pick up one and not waste time,
Wearing the worn out flip-flops.

Love Sonnet 68: I Stormed Dreamland To Rescue A Princess,
I stormed Dreamland to rescue my princess,
Imprisoned by a dragon that breathed fire,
With Thor's hammer aiding in the process,
Which caused more sleep than would Apollo's lyre;
Hermes' sandals took us out in no time,
But Princess wanted a Stiletto style,
She said, that fashion, to gods, is sublime;
What if high-heeled sandals make Hermes rile?
As monster birds might yet catch us in flight,
Princess throw off her clothes for diversion;
No trouble flying in the darkest night,
But to land in the midst of procession;
...So, to avert any landing drama,
...We declared she was... Lady Godiva.

Sandal
What a marvelous pair of sandals beloved you wear?
And you resemble me Cleopatra.
Be careful my sweetheart as the road is slippery
And your poor Julius. Caesar is barefooted.
Look into the sky Rome is burning and Nero plays his violin with the crooked bow.

Standing by my bed
Standing by my bed
in gold sandals
Dawn that very
moment awoke me
One Summer 1958
You sat with Fay that summer day
on the flat concrete roof
of the World War Two bomb shelter
down below the tall flats
where you both lived
and you said
do you want to go
to the movies with me?
she looked across
at the coal depot
with its trucks loading
and unloading
I don't have no money
she replied
you looked at her
my dad'll pay
you said
he's always giving me money
for the movies
she shook her head
and you looked ahead
at the sun shining above
the rain tracks
over the coal depot
you had on your blue jeans
and white tee shirt
and she you noticed
turning your head
had a red and white dress
which came just over her knees
and she wore sandals
on bare feet
besides my mother wants me
so she can see me
Fay said with a sigh
she raised and lowered
her legs against
the concrete wall
her sandals making
tapping noises
as they hit the wall
and you noticed bruises
along her thigh
as she moved
and her dress rode higher
what are those bruises
on your leg?
you asked
she looked down
and stopped moving her legs
and pulled her dress hem
over her knees and thighs
I fell
she replied
down the stairs
you looked at her arms
where other fading bruises
blended into her skin
like worn-out badges
we can see a Western film
you said
I'm sure
there's a Jeff Chandler film
so my dad tells me
but she shook her head
too violent
Mother says
Fay uttered looking away
but there's kissing stuff too
you added
Fay looked at you
her blue eyes
moving over you
like a smoothing
palm of a hand
I'm not allowed
to go to the movies
Daddy says
its sinful and only
wicked people
go there
to be tempted
by the Devil
she sighed
and you both sat in silence
for a while
watching pigeons fly
in the blue summer sky
then she turned quickly
and kissed your cheek
and said
don't have to go
to no movie
to see kissing
and you thought
of the boring bits in films
where the cowboy
gets kissed by the girl
after a gun shoot out
and having been kissed
by Fay
you were glad
and guessed that kissing
wasn't at all
too bad.
