Family Drama

A couple, in their fifties, is coming out of the supermarket,
he sits in wheelchair she pushes him along. He is grumpy,
swears at her for a reason I don’t know, perhaps he thought
she had spent too much money on groceries. She loses her
temper; parks him on the pavement, puts the shopping in
the car and drives off. He just sits there smoking a cigarette
and waits. Five minutes later she returns, helps him into
the car, folds up the wheel chair puts it in the boot and
drives off. On his lips a smile quivers, is it of triumph or love?

She Drives Me Crazy (feat. Zucchero)

I can't help the way I feel
Things you do don't seem so real
Tell me what you got in mind
'Cause we're runnin' out of time
Won't you ever set me free
This waitin' 'round is killin' me
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can't help myself
I can't get any rest
People say I'm obsessed
Everything you say is lies
But to me there's no surprise
What I have, I knew was true
Things go wrong, they always do
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can't help myself, no
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
I won't make it on my own
No one likes to be alone
She drives me crazy
Like no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can't help myself
I can't help myself
She drives me crazy
Drives me crazy
Like no one else
You know she drives me crazy
And I can't help myself
Oh myself
She drives me crazy, oh yes
Like no one else, no one else
She drives me crazy
And I can't help myself

That Drives Me Crazy

It's the look in your eyes when we have to say goodbye,

That drives me crazy!

It's the way you kiss my lips and I know that this is it,

That drives me crazy!

It's the touch of your hand that says let's do it again,

That drives me crazy!

When we're all alone at night and we both know this is right,

That drives me crazy!

Each day my feelings for you grow,

Baby I don't need to guess I know,

That you are a special man,

And it's you I want to take to lovers land,

See the expressions of our love are far from lazy, and boy

That drives me crazy!

She Drives Like Crazy

Whered you learn how to steer
You do eighty in second gear
When you drive, I cant relax
Got your license from cracker jacks
You just hit another tree
These fender benders are killin me
She drives like crazy
Like noone else
She drives like crazy
And Im afraid for myself
Theyll put you behind bars
Were not playin bumper cars
Did a great figure eight
In the middle of the interstate
Tires squeel wherever we go
Even hitchhikers just say no
She drives like crazy
Her cars a mess
She drives like crazy
Shes got a death wish I guess
Shes a demon
Behind the wheel
Thinks shes drivin
The batmobile
Burnin rubber in school zones
Runnin over the traffic cones
Passin semi-s on the right
Now my knuckles are turnin white
She drives like crazy
Shell break your necks (? )
She drives like crazy
She always gets into wrecks
She drives like crazy
Like noone else
She drives like crazy
Now Im afraid for myself
She drives like crazy
Like noone else
She drives like crazy
And Im afraid for myself

That Old Man...

that old man...
wakes up every morning,
greets death with a scowl.
shuffles barefoot to the bathroom,
pees in defiance of the day.

writes a letter to the President,
or one to the editor.
drinks a pot of black coffee,
puts on his hat and his coat.

tipping his hat to god,
takes his dog for a walk.
speaks little, never asks,
for nothing from no one.

sweeps the floor, washes his dishes,
then sits in his chair.
sometimes eats, often not,
and tries not to remember.

watching the hands on the clock,
and a sparrow out the window.
waits for night to come again,
he waits for the knock!

Sonnet: On Anger

Remember Man that Anger is futile!
Restrain your temper bad when ‘fumes’ arise;
Apologize if guilty, in high style,
And write your Anger off or play it nice.

Mere counting helps to dissipate Anger;
But slamming doors and raving mad aren’t right;
Poetry puts the ‘plane’ into hanger!
When Anger comes, Man loses his insight.

The more you write, the stinging tone gets less;
The balls you smash will fall away off-court;
Painting, cartooning help Anger harness;
Just hold your temper making it your forte!

An action rash in angry mood too fails;
When calm returns, a better sense prevails.

In the white collar

In the white collar
Of the lowly sparrow
Puts me to mind of the priest
And the flying nun
I use to watch on b & w t v
T V outs me to mind
Patty Duke
And the twins
My sister and brother
Family raised in a cruel year
My brother puts me to mind
Of the men I call family
The gays met at the bar
The bar puts me to mind
Of the men I took home
Just for once for a night of joy
Joy puts me to mind
Of the time I expressed with setime puts me to mind
That now I am old
And self assured
In the way I go.

A Day Of Rest

The day of Rest.

Sunday morning
Rain shiny asphalt
Stillness sits beside me
I switch on the radio
Stillness disappears
Runs home and
Waits for me to return

Early Sunday shopping
Supermarket empty
Fruit& vegetables
Untouched.
I take my time
Back home stillness
Waits.

Drives Me Crazy

It drives me crazy that I love you
I never thought I would ever say that in a million years
Never thought I liked you more than friends
You talk to me more than anyone
You make me laugh even though some things are childish
You know me more than I know myself
I guess since we grew up together its no surprise that you know me better than I
It drives me crazy that I can actually talk to you and you listen
You don't make a big deal out things like some people do
It drives me crazy that we can make jokes about silly things
You're crazier than ever, never thought you would be like that
You use to be so shy in grade school
It drives me crazy that I actually like you
Everything I do I think about how we're closer than ever
It just seems so weird that we can talk to each other
It just drives me crazy

All Alone

SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
HER CHILDREN GROWN
WITH FAMILY OF THEIR OWN
SHE WONDERS WHAT HAPPEN
CHILDREN ALL OF THREE
THEY HAVE GROWN LIKE FRUIT UPON THE TREES
GRANDCHILDREN SHE HAS SIX
GETTING HARDER TO REMEMBER THEIR NAMES
SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
NO ONE COMES TO VISIT
HER GRANDCHILDREN DOESN, T KNOW HER
HER CHILDREN HAS FORSAKEN HER
SHE WONDERS WHY
SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
SHE LOVED HER CHILDREN DEARLY
WANTED NOTHING BUT THE BEST
WORKED HARD AND WENT WITHOUT
HER CHILDREN SHE WOULD DIE FOR
SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
SHE WONDERS WHY
SHE THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE AROUND HER
LIKE ALL MOTHERS DO
GET TOGETHERS ON SUNDAYS
SEE A MOVIE OR TWO
SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
SHE REEKS HER BRAIN
WONDERS WHAT DID SHE EVER DO
TO GET SUCH COLD TREATMENT
FROM THE BABIES SHE ONCE KNEW
SHE SITS THERE ALL ALONE
THE ANGELS CAME AND CARRIED HER HOME

Plain Jane

Ah, tell 'em about it Darlin'.
Here we go.
She's a waitress at her corner,
Always dancin' nine-to-five.
Well, she ain't no supermodel,
But I'm here to tell you, she's fine, (Ha, ha.)
She's so fine, Johnny.
She's like the classic girl next door,
There's somethin' 'bout her walk:
There's somethin' that goes off inside,
Each time she starts to talk.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane.
She always gets my business,
I can't wait to ring her bell.
(Ah, I bet you can't Donnie.)
She puts a quarter in the jukebox:
Says she don't kiss an' tell.
Is that right, brother.
The way she wears that dress, (Yeah.)
It's time that I confess:
The music starts an' my heart stops,
An' I become a mess.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane.
Nothin' fancy: she's just got everything.
She's so addicting; she's so amazing:
Can't think of anything.
Do, do, do do.
(Whoa, talk to me, plain Jane.)
Do, do, do do, do, do.
Whoa, yeah,
C'mon.
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She's my plain Jane. (Jane, Jane.)
Plain Jane,
Oh, I love her name.
She drives me insane.
She said just call me plain Jane.
(That's right, buddy."
Plain Jane,
She's my plain Jane.
She's my plain Jane.
She's my plain, (Jane)
Whoo, she's my plain Jane.
(No, she's mine.)

Dotty and Willy.

Dotty screws the pen lid,
puts the pen down, folds
her hands in her lap. Willy
has finished his poem, he

is now silent, his muse has
gone. She watches as her
brother sits back in his chair,
pushes his fingers through his

dark hair and sighs. That makes
her almost cry, that poet muse
going like that, him sitting there,
face empty, sighs leaving him

instead of words. Tonight she
will enter it all in her journal,
after cocoa and a biscuit and
Willy's kiss and him gone off

to bed, humming to himself.
She will sit by lamplight, take
out her pen, and write on the
clean page, how he wrote,

what he wrote, the words,
the muse, the leaving of him.
She will leave out the kiss,
the embrace, the seeing each

other face to face. Willy hates
writing things down, he just likes
to sit when the words come and
he can speak them and let Dotty

write the words in the air floating
there. He gets up from his chair,
paces the room, his hands behind
his back, his words gone, his mood

dark, becoming black. Dotty looks
at her hands, entwines her fingers,
makes a church, makes a steeple,
looks inside, sees ink stained people.

The Making Up

Little Miss Margaret sits in a pout,
She and her Dolly have just fallen out.

Dolly is gazing with sorest stare,
Fitted dejectedly back in her chair.

Angry at Margaret, tearful and grieved,
Sore at the spanking so lately received.

Pursed are the maiden's lips close as can be,
They are not speaking, Miss Dolly and she.

Five minutes passes in silence and then,
Margaret's ready for playing again.

Dolly unbendingly sits in her place,
Never a change coming over her face.

Up mad goes, Margaret dropping her pout,
Clasping her playmate she whispers in doubt.

Let's don't play and cry, it's too much like true,
Let's make up Dolly I ain't mad is you?

All Nite Diner

Yeah, yes, yes
Have I told ya
You could really get it on?
I was at an all night diner
The sign said, "Triple X"
But they were talking about root beer
I'm just sitting down
Thinking about nothing
Looking at the thin air
Breathing up the oxygen
Have I told ya
You could really get it on?
A guy comes up, looking pretty 8-ball
Snaggletooth smile, sits down at my table
Puts his arm around me, starts to share his information
He said, he said, he said [x4] this is what he said
"I have sex, I'm always thinking about the pavement
So I can avoid premature ejaculation"
I got up, remembering to thank him
Better things to do so I'll start drinking
I'm in Tahoka, now I'm gonna hook up
With the parties, unfortunately
No one has any ideas, damn
Have I told ya
You could really get it on?

Lisa and The Aftermath After Sunday

Lisa dresses for school,
buttons up the blouse
with fumbling fingers.
She stares down at her

bed where she and Mona
had lain the day before.
The same sheets, pillows
having no doubt her hair,

her smell. She puts on her
school tie, loops it through,
her fingers sensing the
smoothness of the cloth.

She remembers how they
had made love on that bed,
how they had lain naked and
hot and kissing. Best Sunday

ever, she muses, looking away,
stepping into her school skirt,
pulling it over her waist.
Her mother had called out

to her some minutes before.
Breakfast ready, not in the
mood for food. She looks out
the window at the farmyard

across the way, cows heading
out to the fields, her father
following, bellowing, a stick
in his hand, his arms raised

to move them on. She sits on
the bed and takes a pillow
and holds it to her nose
and sniffs. Mona's scent,

borrowed from her mother,
she had said. She feels along
the sheet with her hand.
They had laid there, their

bodies, their lips kissing,
their hands holding. No one
had known they were
making love. Her parents

and family had thought them
drying after getting drench
in the Sunday downpour.
She closes her eyes, imagines

Mona is still there, thinks
she feels her hands around
her waist. Her mother's voice
calls from downstairs. She sighs,

stands up and slips on her
socks and shoes. Leans down
and puts a kiss on her top
pillow where Mona had

laid her head, now she has only
images and memories instead.

The Table

This table is reserved an invitation for two,
only one sits alone and the other chair is bare.
He waits and waits as the hours creep through.
Stares at the empty space and wonders where are you.
He looks at his watch as another hour ticks by,
looks at the door to see who is coming through.
He feels eyes staring, probably wondering whom
he is waiting for as the minutes turn to hours.
The empty chair remains bare
as outside the sun sets as night begins to call.
This table is reserved for two, but where are you?
He thinks of all the reasons why you could be late
for this most important date.
He has rehearsed his lines of what he purposed to say.
The box with the ring within his pocket stays.
Where are you he wonders, do you love him anymore?
The negative thoughts invaded his mind
as he waits looking at the door, just waiting for you.
Finally the waiter comes along and tells him they are about to close.
He gives one last look at the door, then gets up and goes.
The reserved table for two stands empty and bare.
Those who should have sat there are gone never to return,
and as the light go out the table stands alone and forlorn.

Shes Got That Look In Her Eyes

Written by randy owen and teddy gentry
Shes still got those pretty eyes like she did in school
The first time that she looked at me my heart went ka-boom
Today I saw that look again on sale in summer square
She looked so good in what she wore somehow it dont seem fair
Shes got that look in her eyes just like shes always had
Shes got that smile on her lips that always drives me mad
When she looks at me the way I feel comes as no surprise
I love that look when shes got that look in her eyes
Just today she looked at me and I felt like a kid
Even thought Im grown up now the puzzle seems to fit
I may never have her but Ill still love her still
Oh I may never hold her in my mind I always will
Shes got that look in her eyes just like shes always had
Shes got that smile on her lips that always drives me mad
When she looks at me the way I feel comes as no surprise
I love that look when shes got that look in her eyes
When she looks at me the way I feel comes as no surprise
