Nothing Is Missed and No Hearts Beat

I was driving home alone at the end of day
after three days of being away.
Lara sounded pleased on the telephone
that I was at last coming home.

As I accelerated out of a double bend,
beside me sat a departed friend.
How can that be my friend was dead,
was he truly here, or in my head?

“Hello Ben, I didn’t mean to startle you,
but your time on Earth is almost through.
I’m here to help you to your next chapter,
that’s what we call the life here after.”

My imagination is playing tricks with me,
I saw Charlie buried in the cemetery.
The dead are dead and can’t just reappear,
Charlie’s gone, and can’t be here.

“Sad but true Ben, but I have to see this through
and I’m only too happy to accompany you.
Try not to worry too much, I’ll be by your side,
we're fast approaching the next divide.”

The brakes failed and the car spun in the air,
what happened next I was unaware.
Daylight became night then light once again,
I was no longer solid and felt no pain.

Charlie led me to a place called the one way gate
where one bids farewell to a life of fate,
where everything in time eventually meets,
where nothing is missed and no hearts beat.

I became a swirling wind in a tunnelled cloud
away from the light where whispers grew loud.
All about me had turned to an Earthly dark,
I could see a streetlight and hear a dog bark.

Well at least I wasn’t dead and that’s a fact,
my seatbelt was still on and my body’s intact.
As I moved my head and looked into the sky
I could see friend Charlie waving goodbye.

Dancing With Charlie

Charlie was a loser till that sunny day
No-one saw him leaving as he sailed away
Treated like a sinner, no-one gave a damn
Till charlie threw two sixes
Now hes got them in his hand
Now theyre waiting in line to go dancing with charlie
They wanna be seen dancing with charlie
No-one seems to know how
No-one seems to care
Doesnt really matter just as long as you are there
Party in the moonlight, free drinks at the bar
You can bet whats in your pocket that charlie wont be far
Now theyre waiting in line to go dancing with charlie
They wanna be seen dancing with charlie
Charlie bought a jet plane, charlie rides the sky
Friends appear from nowhere, charlie gets them high
Big d was a gambler with everything to lose
Charlie didnt have anything
So he didnt have to choose
And theyre waiting in line to go dancing with charlie
They wanna be seen dancing with charlie
And theyre standing in line to go dancing with charlie
They wanna be seen dancing with charlie

Charlie And Fred

The Hollies
Charlie and Fred
(Allan Clarke/Tony Hicks/Graham Nash)
Track 8 on album 'Butterfly' october 1967
He rides on his horse and cart, Charlie does.
working from six until nine.
Collecting old rags and used bicycles,
old iron of description of any kind.
Here comes Charlie, Charlie the Ragman.
Throw out your old clothes for Charlie and Fred.
Earning a living off things we've discarded.
Earning enough for the board and the bed.
You hear him shout "Rags and old iron."
Everyone knows him that way.
Once a week, they come 'round calling.
How long it's been, I can't say.
chorus
They live all alone in a hovel.
He puts his money away.
Taking enough to just live on,
and at the end of the day
he's saving enough
to put Fred out to graze.
(repeat)
Has anyone seen Charlie lately?
Charlie just ain't been around.
Everyone's seen Fred is grazing,
chewing the grass from the ground.
Children say Charlie is happy
giving balloons to the angels instead.
Where is Charlie, Charlie the Ragman?
Don't throw your clothes out.

Everybody Dance (The Dance Of The Dead)

As the sun sinks upon the horizon,
As the dark night creeps in,
The dead dance.
On the streets they roam,
Silent,
Alone.
Everybody dances,
The saints and the sinners,
Everybody dances,
To the sound of the rhythm,
Everybody dances,
The dance of the dead.

The dance of the dead goes on,
And on,
Never stops,
Never slows,
Time does not matter to the dead.
Everybody dances,
The poor and the rich,
Everybody dances,
To the cries to the babies,
Everybody dances,
The dance of the dead.

As your time goes up,
The dead dance into your room,
Filled with silent movements,
They twirl with grace,
And style
And ease.
They reach out their hands,
And you take it,
And join the dance of the dead.
Everybody dance,
The young and the old,
Everybody dance,
The music is playing,
Everybody dance,
To the dance of the dead.

C’mon,
Everybody dance,
Soldiers and lovers,
Oh,
Everybody dance,
To sound they cry,
So,
Everybody dance,
To the dance of the dead,
The dance of the dead.
Oh,
Everybody dances,
Because the dance never stops.

Across The Lines

Left for dead? I—Charlie Coleman,
On the field we won—and lost,
Like a dog; the ditch my death-bed
My pillow but a log across.
Helpless hangs my arm beside me,
Drooping lies my aching head;
How strange it sounded when that soldier,
Passing, spoke of me as "dead."

Dead? and here—where yonder banner
Flaunts its scanty group of stars,
And that rebel emblem binds me
Close within those bloody bars.
Dead? without a stone to tell it,
Nor a flower above my breast!
Dead? where none will whisper softly,
"Here a brave man lies at rest!"

Help me, Thou, my mother's helper,—
Jesus, Thou who biding here,
Loved me like an earthly mother,
Be thou still to aid me near.
Give me strength to totter yonder,
Hold me up till o'er me shines
The flag of Union—there she promised
To meet me, just beyond the lines.

Well I know how she will wander
Where a woman's foot may stray,
Looking with those eyes so tender
Where the poor boys wounded lay.
How her hand will bring them water,
For her own boy Charlie's sake,
And when dying bid them whisper,
"I pray the Lord my soul to take."

Ah! I stand on foot but feebly,
And the blood runs very fast,
Yet by fence and bush I'll stagger
Till the rebel lines be past.
"Courage, Charlie! twist it tighter,—
The tourniquet about your arm;
Be a man—don't faint and shiver
When the lifetide trickles warm."

Faint and week,—still coming, mother,
Walking some, but creeping more,
Fearing lest the watchful sentry
Stops the heart-beat,—slow before
Stay—with fingers ruddy dabbled
Loose the belt your waist confines;
Write upon it "Charlie Coleman—
Carry him across the lines."

Trembling letters—but some stranger
Chance may read them when I'm gone,
And for the sake of love and pity
Bear my lifeless body on.
Coming! ah—what means this darkness—
Night too soon is coming on.
Mother, are you waiting?—"Jesus,
Tell her that with You I've gone."

Then the head her heart had pillowed,
Drooping laid it down to rest,
As calm as when in baby slumber
Its locks were cradled on her breast.
Glowed the sunset o'er the meadow,
Lighting up the gloomy pines,
Where a body only lingered—
Charlie's soul had crossed the lines.

A passing soldier—foe, yet human—
Stooped to read the words of blood;
So pitiful, so sadly earnest;
And bore him onward through the wood.
Beneath the white flag bore him safely.
Now, while Indian Summer shines,
A mother's tears dew springing myrtle,
O'er Charlie's grave across the lines.

Charlie Mack

Artist: dj jazzy jeff and the fresh prince
[fresh prince]
Everywhere we go, downtown or to a show
We have two necessities, charlie mack and our limo
He's feared by suckers yet he's loved by kids
Pay attention and let me tell you who charlie mack
He is our homeboy from around the block
He's regarded through the city as the hip-hop cop
Height about 6'6", weight about 290
Everywhere i go, charlie mack is right behind me
He never laughs, never smiles nor sweats
He doesn't breaks arms or legs, only spines or necks
He once killed a man cause he would not let go of his eggo
Apollo creed is a sucker, charlie mack could beat drago
He could bench about three-hundred pounds
The cops all take a vacation, when charlie's in town
He's the toughest around, so everywhere that i go, he goes
He's charlie mack and he's the first out the limo
[fresh prince]
I guess you're wonderin why he's the first out
The limo, yo, let me give you this bit of info
So you'll know the things that charlie can do
And you'll know every single reason why he's down with the crew
The limo picks up about a half past six
With the radio blastin our latest hit
It's me, jeff, ready rock, omar and j.l.
Charlie mack is up front as we depart the hotel
First we cause chaos throughout the city streets
Then maybe stop at burger king for a bite to eat
And if somebody gets stupid while we're in the place
Charlie cancels his order and bites off their face
He's not a troublemaker, in fact, he's a troublebreaker
And if somebody gets dumb, well it'll only take a
Second or two, after some fools snaps
Law and order is restored by my hero charlie mack
Wheel off into the limo, and head for the jam
Charlie cracks all the knuckles, on both of his hands
And when we pull up to the show, the routine is unrehearsed
It's just natural that we let charlie hop our first
He clears the crowd without sayin a word
Man, that's the loudest silence i've ever heard
A lot of times guys test him, by tryin to bug
He just, leaves ring imprints, all over their mugs
He's a terminator, a hercules of sorts
Man to hell with chess, he likes physical sports
You may not have known before but now you know
The reason why charlie mack is the first out the limo
[fresh prince]
We'd like to apologize to all of our fans
But please don't touch us when we're at our jams
Cause charlie don't like folks around us when we're doin a show
And if he punches you, uh-oh, better get maaco!
Still you weak rap dudes tempers are hot
Just because i've got somethin that you ain't got
If you want to get physical, rowdy or try to bomb me
I won't get excited, i'll just say, "yo charlie!"
You shoulda been kind, you shouldn't have snapped
Charlie only hits you once and now you're takin a nap
And when he leaves you decaptitated, crushed in the dust
You'll look up, and see your girl in the limo with us
You may think that's enough boy but i think not
Charlie kick his face again i think you missed a spot
I roll down the limo window and yell, "by the way eyes
You'll see your girl bucknaked givin charlie a message"
I'm serious, i'm not jokin, no doubt
You know how many doubters bones have been broken
You may not have known before but now you know
The reason why charlie mack is the first out the limo
[fresh prince]
Charlie mack.. the first out the limo
He's charlie mack.. the first out the limo
In closing, we'd like to say this, to you bustaz
If you're skeptical you'll probably get beat up, plus kid
Embarassed and laughed at, by all of your friends
And if you cross charlie mack it's the beginning of the end
Of life as you know it, you might not die, sir
But if you're not dead, you'll wish you were
But if you still wanna bug out, homeboy let's go
You can bug with charlie mack cause he's the first out the limo
He's charlie mack
And he's the first out the limo

The Poet Laurie Ate

Laurie was my dog
And he loved to bite
He wasn't very clever
And not at all bright.
He didn't like my friend
A mad poet called Fred
One day Laurie bit him
On the back of his head.
Fred wasn't at all pleased
And bit my dog back
So Laurie retaliated
And went on the attack.
They wrestled on the floor
And Fred got bit a lot
So to get my dog off him
I hit the mutt with a flowerpot.
But Laurie was very tough
And the pot bounced off his head
Then poor old Fred stopped moving
In fact he was now Dead.
I didn't know what to do
The poet didn't deserve to die
Looking down at Laurie
I asked this crazy dog Why?
But he just didn't care
And kept chewing at Fred
This loony dog was eating him
The he swallowed dead Fred's head.
Poor Fred was now all gone
But this must have been his fate
To lose his life to a psycho dog
The poet Laurie ate.

When I Depart

My body now’s only a shell, where my spirit used to dwell,
No longer in this earthly tent, up to Heaven I’ve been sent,
Though on earth I have died, I’m now by my Savior’s side,
No longer in this body friend, to begin life that has no end.

Indeed on earth, I have died, but, now my body’s glorified,
I’ve risen as my Savior said, alive in Heaven far from dead,
While lifeless my body may be, I’ve passed to life eternally,
Now from earth I’ve departed, life with God has just started.

When on this earth I see death, I shall receive eternal breath,
Entering in that heavenly portal, I’ll receive a body immortal,
A new body to begin eternal life, with my Lord, Jesus Christ,
As I enter in that Eternal Door, to be with Christ forevermore.

Death again will see me never, as I will live with God forever,
In a mansion prepared for me, that I now can touch and see,
A place surpassing all my hope, a paradise of eternal scope,
A home granted to me by grace, to sit with God face to face.

Death was just to say goodbye, to meet with God up on high,
Where one day I’ll see you there, in a paradise, without a care,
For one day soon we will reunite, to be forever in God’s Light,
As death won’t stop us friend, from life with God, with no end.

Home

(charlie smalls)
Think of home
Home
When I think of home
I think of a place where theres love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing
Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning
Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin the scene, makes it all clean
Maybe theres a chance for me to go back there
Now that I have some direction
It would sure be nice to be back home
Where theres love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
Time be my friend, let me start again
Suddenly my world has changed its face
But I still know where Im going
I have had my mind spun around in space
And yet Ive watched it growing
If youre listning god
Please dont make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?
Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So its real, real to me
And Ive learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love
Like yours
Like me
Like home...

Soon As I Get Home

Written & composed: charlie smalls
Music: charlie smalls
Theres a feeling here inside.
That I cannot hide, and I know Ive tried,
But its turning me around.
Im not sure that Im aware
If Im up or down, or here or there
I need both feet on the ground.
Maybe Im just going crazy,
Letting myself get up-tight;
Im acting just like a baby,
But im- gonna be-Im gonna be allright!
Soon as I get home
Soon as I get home
Soon as I get home
In a diffrent place, in a diffrent time,
Differrent people around me-
I would like to know of that diffrent world
And how diffrent they find me
And just whats a wiz, is it big?
Will it scare me?
If I ask to leave, will the wiz even hear me?
How will I know then-
If Ill ever get home again?
Here I am alone, though it feels the same,
I dont know where Im going;
Im here on my own, and its not a game,
And now a strange wind is blowing
Im so amazed at the things that I see here,
Dont want to be afraid,
I just dont wanna be here;
In my mind this is clear,
What am I doing here?
I wish I was home.

The light's in my head - Villanelle

There's a light in the sickroom that never goes dead,
Though daylight is dimming, through the still open curtain-
But the light's in my head; the light's in my head!

He lies in a stupor, but calls out from his bed;
And he never complains, but you fear that he's hurting-
There's a light in the sickroom that never goes dead.

She doesn't sleep nights, but sleeps daytimes instead;
Her breathing's still even, but death's near for certain-
But the light's in my head; the light's in my head!

First they said stroke, and then heart attack- dread!
With the new diagnosis, with death he is flirting-
There's a light in the sickroom that never goes dead.

There's cancer and heart disease, so lightly we tread;
It's bad news for sure- her aneurysm bursting! -
But the light's in my head; the light's in my head!

It's all here inside me now, all that I've said,
Now what's left in memory's darkness, I'm cursing;
There's a light in the sickroom that never goes dead-
And the light's in my head- the light's in my head!

The Algernon-Gordon Effect (5-7-5 Poem)

Man considered dumb,
Retardation sufferer.
Lost inside the world.

Now science evolves;
Operation makes him smart,
Genius he soon becomes.

Befriends Algernon,
Lab mouse that got changed before him,
Two geniuses.

Scientists use them.
They run away together;
Scared but not alone

Algernon changes,
Charlie brings him back to lab,
Right back to the start.

Algernon goes dumb,
Charlie loses his smarts too.
Right back to the start.

Goodbye Algernon,
Hope I can remember you,
Back at the centre.

He left to go to,
The retardation centre,
Far away from home.

Algernon dies first,
He remembers their friendship,
He does say goodbye.

Smart mouse; his best friend.
Cries as on his grave places,
Algernon's Flowers.

•Poem based and dedicated to book ‘Flowers for Algernon' by Daniel Keyes and to his characters in it, Charlie Gordon and Algernon.
