When dreams are faraway!
Yet, I close my eye lids
and pretend that I sleep
Hear the cries of children
Where they're looking for parents,
Planes fly in the sky
and dropp not money
But the poor wait
and see perhaps some gifts.
Moon shines with stars,
and the clouds run
Still I am awake
Though I pretend
That I sleep?

The last Moon
Who worries of this pauper's whereabouts
And please do not think that I don't have any regrets?
I sleep on the road as usual and I see you all the time in the night sky.
But I know about the vast distance between us.
Faraway stars in multitude but none of them solve my destiny.
Sun never bothers in the morning if I am not awake
And I feel that I see the last Moon tonight.
* If someone sings this I would like to hear that voice before I close my eyes.

It's A Fact
that those who pretend
to be asleep
are the hardest people to wake
and so i pretend too that i do not know that you are pretending.
in this way
we are even.
i pretend that i am wide awake
in the middle of my
resentful sleep.

A monotonous Closet Drama
We get up early in the morning.
I dropp her to work
And I too grab the struggle.
Evening when I am off
I pick her to our gloomy roost.
Take dinner and go to sleep.
I am awake in the middle of the night
And she's fast asleep on our rickety bed.
She cries and smiles in her dreams
And I am bit worried that she could have eloped with a King.

I hear the purple sky laments in a twilight
Yes, I am proud
As I am big!
And I have a Sun
Moon and stars
Extricate passing clouds
What about the beautiful rain Goddess?
Yet, I am far away
from precious human beings?

A street sleeper with smoker's cough
It's windy and cold in winter
Hard to sleep on the roadside
When stars give endearing twinkles
Among his horrible cough.
And he covers the whole body
But through the rat holes of his linen
He sees the vast sky and Moon hides
Stars alert in the the night.
He begs a sound sleep at least,
As the old King passes this way to the Harem tomorrow.
And he has to wake up early in the morning and clear his citadel!

Lets Pretend
(eric carmen)
I cant sleep nights
Wishing you were here beside me
Cant help feeling
Thats way it ought to be
You know we could run (run, run) away
And I couldnt bear to hear
The things theyd say
Oh no
Baby lets pretend
That tonight could live forever
If we close our eyes
And believe it might come true
Baby lets pretend
We could always be together
But for now just let me
Spend the night with you
Somehow, someday
Things are gonna be so different
Dont cry
Some way
I promise it will be all right
So now that were all alone
I couldnt bear
To ever take you home
Oh no
Baby lets pretend
That tonight could live forever
If we close our eyes
And believe it might come true
Baby lets pretend
We could always live together
But for now just let me
Spend the night with you
So take me now
My love cant wait
Were almost there now darlin
Darlin hold me, hold me
Hold me
Baby lets pretend
That tonight could live forever
If we close our eyes
And believe it might come true
Baby lets pretend
We could always live together
But for now just let me
Spend the night with you

Night lingers but taciturn?
When the sky's getting darker
Birds hurry to fly for their roosts
And Sun prepares to sleep
leaving Moon,
To do the graveyard shift
with Stars.
I see the faraway traffic lights
fading along the road.
Night is dull like the gloomy life!
But some nocturnal willy-nilly flowers
bloom for the parade?

Happiness shared is the flower.]

He Does Not Sleep That Well At Night
He does not sleep that well at night though his troubles are small
The possums walking on his roof the rats squeak in the wall,
The boobook owl is crying mopoke on the trees across the way
He used to sleep without once waking till after break of day.
He does not sleep that well at night his wife beside him snore
He lay beside her wide awake for three hours sometimes more
The moon shines through the window pane he hear the plover cry
And the hunting fox is barking in the old paddock nearby.
He does not sleep that well at night he lay in bed awake
And the voices of the nocturnal creatures he cannot mistake
The frogs are singing in the ponds to tell that rain is near
And occasionally the barking of the neighbourhood dogs he hear.
He goes to bed at ten o clock but he doesn't get to sleep till around two
Although he must get up to go to work at seven still his worries seem so few
Compared to some who do sleep well with him it used not to be this way
He often slept for ten hours straight till after break of day.

Let The Night Sleep
Let the night sleep
Sleep for ever deep
With the night I sleep
Beyond the world to peep
Universe will sleep
Plants and trees
Birds and bees
Stars and moon
To sleep very soon!
Fruits and flowers
Joy with showers
Will sleep with me and the night
Not to keep the life very tight!
No dawn of the day
Right upto the dooms day!
Sleep permanent
In the world impermanent
I'll sleep without light
My agonies will sleep
My worries will sleep
My pains will sleep
My sins will sleep!
While in sleep
I am pure
I am peace
I am noble!
While my body is asleep
Awake my soul I keep
Sleep akin to death
Death akin to sleep in mirth?
Let the night sleep
Sleep for ever deep
With night I sleep
Sleep to eternity
Soul to merge in Divinity!

The frozen death in a quiet winter night!

Skeletal cypress trees mourn
for their offspring
At a stretch sleep the countless fallen leaves,
Quiet the hazy night and a small drizzle
with crispy snow that covers the helpless burial grounds?
I hear their babyish cries but I am voiceless?
I took out my pocket book and the pencil stub
and I address to my poor poet-God!
While a tear dropp hangs in my eye.
For you, I scribble this line Sir!
O I witnessed the frozen death
in this quiet winter night?
for my poet friend Pranab Chakraborty in gratitude!
Who's translated my few poems into his mother tongue Bengali and already published them in his co-editing magazine.

I Cant Sleep
(kathy louvin/mark collie)
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
I close my weary eyes
And see your face
I hold my pillow tight
And dream of your embrace
I know that I could use the rest
But my lonely heart cries out for your caress
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
They say that absence makes a love grow stronger
But I dont believe my empty arms can hold out any longer
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
When youre gone
Theres nothing I can do
But lie awake alone
And dream the whole night through
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you
I cant sleep
For dreaming about you

I seek my little Hometown
*['Sleep, little darlings, I watch while you slumber.Oh sun! Divine sun! Ripening the pumpkins everyone.']-'P'ere Goriot', Honor'e de Balzac
I peeped into the vast World map
and found my pearl like tiny island Sri Lanka
in the Indian Ocean!
And I marked my Hometown
'Katubedda', actually we had a house of our own there
Poor Mom built that from our loving Father's
Working compensation, who died
under an Aircraft hanger at the age of 32.
There's a famous University in Katubedda
and luckily I got an opportunity to jump there
for a brief course 'Radar Observation & Plotting'
It's a part of my seafarer career.
Now I observe my poor companions there
and plot their whereabouts in my inquisitive mind?
Their day to day greetings, smiles and cries
I see and hear on my heart screen
Black & White!
to the blind Violinist Mr. Gilbert who fiddles at the fish market on sundays!

Sleep if you're tired
Sleep lil one.
Sleep your troubles away.
Quietly lay down, under your warm blanket,
Close your pretty brown eyes,
and rest your head on your pillow.
When you're tired,
just go to sleep.
Sleep like a temporary death,
if you have a dream, you're in heaven.
If you have a nightmare, you're in hell.
Let the moon and stars shine,
shine on you.
Let the moon give you comfort,
and let the stars guide you.
Just remember,
Sleep if you're tired.

Sleeper
Sleep that half dead,
sleep the body not the head.
Sleep that bad said,
Poor owns that bed,
Dreams are found on that herd.
Sleep while awake,
Sleep that dead not closed eye fake.
Sleep that weak,
Tommorow u gona take.
Eat that sleep and enjoy its steak.
Sleep still stands,
None to overtake.
Sleep that height dare for cake.
Sleep that stress and have the bless,
Sleep to confess as she do to embrance,
Sleep for paid cash as he do to love false.
Sleep that sleep as no one sleep ever deep.
Sleep that better as no other sleeper.
Wear that sweater as did Brother Peter,
Sleep that firm to dream that greater,
Sleep not slopy arrise all the weaker.

There Is
this vacation's useless
these white pills aren't kind
i've given a lot of thought on this 13-hour drive
i missed the grinding concrete where we sat past 8 or 9
and slowly finished laughing in the glow of our headlights
i've given a lot of thought to the nights we use to have
the days have come and gone
our lives when but so fast
i faintly remember breathing on your bedroom floor
where i laid and told you but you sweared you loved me more
do you care if i don't know what to say
will you sleep tonight or will you think of me
will i shake this off pretend its all okay
that there someone out there who feels just like me
there is
those notes you wrote me
i've kept them all
i'll give a lot of thought of how to write you back this fall
with every single letter in every single word there
will be a hidden message about a boy that's
loves a girl
do you care if i don't know what to say
will you sleep tonight or will you think of me
will i shake this off
pretend its all okay that there's someone out there who feels just like me
there is
do you care if i don't know what to say?
will you sleep tonight or will you think of me
will i shake this off
pretend its all okay that there's someone out there who feels just like me
do you care if i don't know what to say?
will you sleep tonight or will you think of me
will i shake this off
pretend its all okay that there's someone out there who feels just like me

Someone smiles painstakingly
Awake often my little red eyes
While in the graveyard shift.
Sometimes my precious eyes need a long sleep
But I tell 'please wake till morn
As the night isn't so friendly with us.'
Then my eyes grumble; 'You sleep in the morning Master!
Though we close our eyes,
Yet, we see the World of gambling with human nature.'
* To the unknown little blind girl who roamed in my daydream and said; ' It's really awful Grandpa! when I see your eyes are like two hot iron balls.'

Sleep and Close Your Eyes
Sleep when the dogs begin to bark
When cicadas start to sing their songs-
Sleep when the moon shines no more
When the radio and TV are turned off
And what remains is silence in the night.
Sleep, my dear, and close your eyes
Forget your troubles which sadden your heart
Sleep and dream sweet dreams of hope
To bring you to the new day of delight
Sleep, my dear, and close your eyes.

Moon, Moon, Crazy Moon
moon, moon, crazy moon
natural moon
torn apart and snoozing moon;
lovely moon, romantic moon
poor poor moon
the romance
plucked out of its drab surface;
moon moon going wild
moon moon running away
from the earth -
O moon, why do you run away from the earth?
does earth touch you in the wrong places
and you've got no Body
to which one could lodge
a complaint about sexual harassment? ?
ah, moon moon, temperamental moon
dark moon
glowing moon;
sexy moon
and old-woman hag of a moon;
moon moon with the best views of the earth
moon moon moon
puts me to sleep and wakes me up
in the middle of nights;
and one day we'll sleep in the moon
and produce babies there
and we'll have the first moon-ish boys and girls
and moon-ly families;
but meanwhile
moon moon driving fanatics
and inspiring love and romance and myths
moon moon eerie moon
moon moon that presides over love and horrors
and evil and good
and naked witches dancing in moonlit groves;
pooor moon moon the earth moon
not as interesting and dramatic as other moons;
don't get too friendly and dropp in -
oh, never dropp in, no one invited you
silly mooonn, no no, you're not invited home to earth
moon moon cheese moon eaten by mice;
but still our dear moon darling moon
moon mooon
our very own earth's moon
as we moo moo like cows
moo moo moo mooo
at our own moon moon moon

An isolated shack beside the Railroad
Only after the last night's train passed
They get a proper sleep on the cracked floor?
And children get up early in the morning
to the train's annoyed hooting!
But none of them go to school
As the infectious rats were eaten
Their tattered certificates of birth?
Unlettered father and sympathetic mother
pacify them that they have planned
One day to go on a train journey
Somewhere around hill side
Where the diamond mountains touch
The sky & Heaven!
In their sugary dreams near by dawn
Children see the train goes faster
Passing the skyscrapers in the city.
And one pulled the chain merrily.
Train stopped and they woke up.
O they observed the barren sky
Through their holey thatched roof!
Rich trains go in the right time as usual
with the rowdy hoot!
And the shearing skinny children never grumble on picnics
Poor parents too won't discuss the planned trip often
Ultimately all in the shack got used to the life's boring excursion?
[Remember the Econ-teacher once asked me about the restricted word 'Exploitation' in a college seminar. Then I replied; 'Who's stolen the poor man's wealth and deposited in Swiss Banks? ]

Human song from dawn to dusk
Sun hasn't come out yet and still in his night gown.
But he awakes, even in the sleep
He hears the planes fly
And see bombs dropp from the sky.
He always dreams nightmares.
Where is tomorrow
His yesterday and today?
Sun goes down as usual
And he too goes home with empty hands.
Yes, home full of worries and sing the sad song without music.
(Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back into the same box.-Italian proverb.)
*Faith is the bird that sings when dawn is still dark.
