The Burial Of Tragedy
Recollection of childhood,
Takes me behind to the past,
The memories,
Sometimes make me sad,
And sometimes quite glad.
Now I recall a man, middle aged,
Mysteriously mad,
I knew not his origin, he ambled
Through the nearby town,
With disheveled hair,
Dressed in tattered brown,
He had unwashed body
With lean sable legs, and feet
Always with sole-broken boots.
Though his face was harrowed,
Yet emitted prints of learning.
He didn't accept coins
Or notes of charity, nor did he beg
As if these diminished his dignity.
He only lived on the pieces
Of fallen fruit, and often tumbled
On them with a grin,
And a smile devoid of pleasure;
He slept at night in an ancient,
Deserted inn beside the highway,
Made in the reign of Sher Shah Suri.
The man roved around the town,
With an old leather-bag,
Always pressing against his heart,
He never allowed anyone to touch,
As if he concealed some gems of treasure.
Ah! At one wintry night at last,
The cold caught him, the folk found
Him dead lying supine in the morn,
But still pressing the contents
To his heart; with ever growing curiosity
They unfastened the straps,
And brought out nothing
But his degree of graduation,
All crippled, and faded;
The forsaken graduate lay dead,
As if there lay an incarnated tragedy
Waiting for its funeral, and all mourners
Threw coins and notes of currency
For shroud and perfumes:
The necessary items of a decent burial.

Pressing On
Well Im pressing on
Yes, Im pressing on
Well Im pressing on
To the higher calling of my lord.
Many try to stop me, shake me up in my mind,
Say, prove to me that he is lord, show me a sign.
What kind of sign they need when it all come from within,
When whats lost has been found, whats to come has already been?
Well Im pressing on
Yes, Im pressing on
Well Im pressing on
To the higher calling of my lord.
Shake the dust off of your feet, dont look back.
Nothing now can hold you down, nothing that you lack.
Temptations not an easy thing, adam given the devil reign
Because he sinned I got no choice, it run in my vein.
Well Im pressing on
Yes, Im pressing on
Well Im pressing on
To the higher calling of my lord.

Treasured
Treasure is a lovely love, a built book,
One of the heavens contains the treasure.
Treasure forbade me to truly become you,
Understanding the gold and silver is becoming clear.
Let golden items sway, let gold become heavenly
By being money and wealth of a man in reign.
The money colder is the money touched;
Anywhere you go, is the silver being rich?
Let coins be coins as far as the eyes glance,
The body I suffer shall happen to be in the river of gold.

Mamie and You in Madrid.
Madrid
and after the street salesman
conned you
out of coins
in your change
Mamie said
well put it down
to experience
we all get caught
at one time or other
and they have
brought forth
great art
and you stared at her
at her hair and eyes
and said
yes I guess
but you were still peeved
about it but then
thought of the night before
when you and she
had slept all night
in the coach
through France
and into Spain
she with her head
on your shoulder
making little
snoring sounds
sometimes talking
in her sleep
other times
turning towards you
with her mouth
slightly ajar
and her hair
in a mess
and you had moved in
on her and kissed
her brow
like one planting
a soft kiss
on a corpse
and that made you laugh
and she said
what's so funny?
and you said
taking hold
of her hand
crossing a street
just something
entered my head
what?
she said
about kissing a corpse
you replied
what corpse?
and that reminded you
of the time they brought
your father's body home
for the night before
his funeral and as
he lay there
in the coffin
your gran had said
kiss him goodbye
and so you did
and that stayed with you
the feel
and chilled skin
and how it didn't seem
to be him
just a shell
but you loved him still
for all that
and when you told her that
she said
how sweet
and you gazed at her
at her eyes
and hair
and kissable lips
as you walked
the Spanish street.

My Little Town
Words & music by paul simon
In my little town
I grew up believ--ing
God keeps his eye on us all
And he used to lean upon me
As I pledged allegiance to the wall
Lord I recall
My little town
Coming home after school
Flying my bike past the gates
Of the factories
My mom doing the laundry
Hanging our shirts
In the dirty breeze
And after it rains
Theres a rainbow
And all of the colors are black
Its not that the colors arent there
Its just imagin-ation they lack
Everythings the same
Back in my little town
Nothing but the dead and dying
Back in my little town
Nothing but the dead and dying
Back in my little town
In my little town
I never meant nothin
I was just my fathers son
Saving my money
Dreaming of glory
Twitching like a finger
On the trigger of a gun
Leaving nothing but the dead and dying
Back in my little town
Repeat and fade:
Nothing but the dead and dying
Back in my little town

Hot Night In A Cold Town
Sonnys out strolling, ambling slowly
Washed in amber street lights
A mexican wind blows in
Takin ahold of angelinas hair
And her halo
Motors running, muffling the sound
Of the street talk
A big deals goin down
In another hot night
In a cold town
Got yourself a hot night
In a cold town
Johnnys got spare change
In his pocket
A ring and a watch
To hock for a sweet ride
A one way ticket
Hidden in his shoe
These last few hours
He says hell spend with you
Hes leavin home without a trace
No forwarding address
Hell never have to face another
Hot night
In a cold town
Got yourself a hot night
In a cold town
Well, the losers and the groovers
And the corner boys
Are hangin around
Runnin in and out of doorways
Up and down the stairways
Stray dogs headed for the pound
In another
Hot night in a cold town
Got you, got yourself a
Hot night in a cold, cold town
Cold town
Its just another hot night
In a cold town
Such a cold town

and it was Her Summer
…And It Was Her Summer
“Go back to the children’s home, she said I have no work and
can’t afford to keep you” Late June afternoon she sat on a bench
with a man I didn’t know. The man smiled I didn’t like him, but
took the coins he gave me to buy an ice –cream for; I was still
hanging about so mother got up and slapped me across the face.
”Get lost you stupid boy! ” My face was burning I threw the coins
into the lake and ran away. When I stopped running it was night
and I could see sheep in a field, I was tired and cold, thought of
seeking shelter in a little wooden church, but it smelt of fear and
I thought of ghosts, so I walked on till I came to a workman’s hut
near the road, it was easy to get in; here the smell was of coffee,
and kind men in overalls, perhaps one of them were my father?
It was morning and warm sunlight when they came, they were not
angry, but gave me milk and bread and showed me the quickest
way to get home. The sky that day was enormous and from a hill
I looked down to the town, I could see the school building it must
have been early, no children in the yard; but I just sat there and
could not understand why my mother didn’t want to se me.

The Madman’s Song
While remembering I do dive deep,
Into the waters of the remote past,
And bring out the shining jewels,
Of the sunken memories at last.
I recollect a man called mad,
Roved he around despised, sad,
Carried he upon his singed shoulder,
A long club of bamboo brown,
With empty cagelets hanging along,
Walked he through the meadows,
Bareheaded, with crude hard feet,
Harrowed face, ashes upon his mouth.
All the time asked he the village folk,
“Haven’t you seen my love, my hope? ”
In fact at the very wedding night,
His father, his wife did elope,
Since then he did nothing but roved,
With hopeful eyes, but lips dried,
Always heaved he the sighs deep,
As a furnace worked in his breast.
He often named his beguiling love,
I recall a song he often sang roving,
“The scent flowed out of the vials,
They contained perfume no more,
Commodities ran short from the market,
The shops lay empty, desolate behind.”

An Inner Cry
The day started with a smile and I thought it will remain forever
but nothing is certain in this life.
I saw in the mirror my hair turns gray, a front tooth loosened
which cannot grip anything.
Hearing too very weak and doctor prescribed me glasses for catract.
Oh! it's really funny now I see things better than earlier.
Everybody has changed and they all are running behind something
but nobody knows their goal.
new currency notes and coins twinkling like stars
and the banks open day & night to secure them.
Those who doesn't have accounts waiting for what?
They too feel hungry and run here and there
even not knowing their blood group.
paper says the petrol price has increased again
and it doesn't make any difference to me
as I walk all the time.
Today the topic is our children, already grown ups, married and settled down in overseas.
we are waiting for what?
at least to see them once before we die,
but they grumble always
no leisure time to visit us.
banks open day & night; people rush
what is this unnecessary stress?
Myself and wife both of us waiting hand-in-hand
looking to the infinity with a smile and inner cry
for a better world without any barriers and boundaries; if little more Oxygen.?

The Last Post
The bugler sent a call of high romance—
“Lights out! Lights out!” to the deserted square.
On the thin brazen notes he threw a prayer,
“God, if it’s this for me next time in France…
O spare the phantom bugle as I lie
Dead in the gas and smoke and roar of guns,
Dead in a row with the other broken ones
Lying so stiff and still under the sky,
Jolly young Fusiliers too good to die.”

Finding Graves No More
Silence was uneasy for a moment
for my soul was deranged.
Harrowed up to the greatest degree
I was racked with eternal torment.
In my heart, a silhouette of death I see;
blinding darkness carried me
to the grave which I have dug for me.
No candles, no flowers... just darkness,
mere darkness where shadows were
suppressed and quietude - a stranger;
for despite the stillness of silence
was the mourning of my soul...
that brought me to the brim of sorrow.
It was in my cold and silent grave that I wept
and shed the tears that drenched
my heart that once was brave.
Harrowed up with the memories of my sins
I dug and dug, so as to find
those sins that I buried long ago
and take them out - they burden my heart
with the burden that I could not carry anymore.
But lo, I could find them no more!
Again, I dug - I'm sure I buried them
somewhere in my heart.
And all I found were devoid parts;
for how it happened, I never knew.
And then for a sudden...
a melody played in my heart
that brought me tears of pain or joy
I never was certain, as the words
of the song was in my heart written:
'I stand all amazed at the love Jesus offers me.
Confused at the grace that so fully He proffers me.
I tremble to know that for me He was crucified,
that for me a sinner He suffered, He bled and died.
Oh it is wonderful that He should care for me,
enough to die for me.
Oh it is wonderful, wonderful to me.'
He took away those graves in my heart with His blood.
I thought of any way to repay Him-
of something to offer that I have.
Yet I have nothing but my heart...
and my broken heart I give -
hoping, still hoping that he would receive.

Wreck On The Highway
Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I cam upon a wreck on the highway
There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried mister, wont you help me please
An ambulance finally came and took him to riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway
Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking bout the wreck on the highway

Lucky Town
House got too crowded clothes got too tight
And I dont know just where Im going tonight
Out where the skys been cleared by a good hard rain
Theres somebody callin my secret name
Im going down to lucky town
Going down to lucky town
I wanna lose these blues Ive found
Down in lucky town
Down in lucky town
Had a coat of fine leather and snakeskin boots
But that coat always had a tread hangin loose
Well I pulled it one night and to my surprise
It led me right past your house and on over the rise
Im going down to lucky town
Down to lucky town
Im gonna lose these blues Ive found
Down in lucky town
Down in lucky town
I had some victory that was just failure in deceit
Now the jokes comin up through the soles of my feet
I been a long time walking on fortunes cane
Tonight Im steppin lightly and feelin no pain
Well heres to your good looks baby now heres to my health
Heres to the loaded places that we take ourselves
When it comes to luck you make your own
Tonight I got dirt on my hands but Im building me a new home
Down in lucky town
Down in lucky town
Im gonna lose these blues Ive found
Down in lucky town

The Future Of Hands
All winter
The trees held up their silent hives
As if they mattered.
But on one main street of bars and lights,
I watched a woman who had begged for days
Throw all the coins back, insulted,
Into the crowd,
And then each cheap stone on her necklace,
As if they were confetti
At a bitter wedding,
And then her stained blouse.
I smiled, then, at her dignity.
But when the night came
With only its usual stars to show,
She was applauded and spat on,
Or those passing stepped around her,
Avoiding her body
As if it had become private, or pure.
When the police arrived,
Sniveling about the cold day she had chosen
To strip,
Her face was a brown jewel,
And I knew the hands
Of the police would have to close now,
On this body abandoned to wind,
Just as her hands closed, finally,
On wind that would have nothing
To do with her,
And never had.
*
I know that wind
Had nothing to do with longing.
I have seen that, even in the eyes
Of girls across a lunch counter--
A desire to be anywhere that wasn't
Texas, and waiting on tables--
Their eyes making a pact
With the standing, staring wheat
About to be turned back into the black soil
That spreads everywhere when no one is watching.
And writing this,
I stare at my hands,
Which are the chroniclers of my death,
Which pull me into this paper
Each night, as onto a bed of silk sheets,
And the woman gone.
After two hours of work,
I do not know if there ever was a woman.
I watch the flies buzz at the sill.
*
Or, if I sleep,
I must choose between two dreams.
In one of them, my hands move calmly
Over a woman's waist, or lift
In speech the way birds rise or settle
Over a marsh, over nesting places.
In the other dream,
There are no nesting places,
The birds are white, and scavenging.
They lift negligently over the town in wind,
Like paper, like the death of paper.
They dip and rise
As if there had never been a heaven.
Beneath them, it is summer.
It is the same town I was born in.
And in its one bar
The man selling illegal human hair from Mexico,
The hair of brides mixed
With the hair of the dead,
Argues all day over the price.

Looking For Love On Broadway
Need a reason to be here
Hoping to find it tonight
Walking alone on broadway
Watching the people
Watching the town go down
Broadways a river to me
Fat fish in the big city sea
Taxi cabs, limousines, submarines
Got my mind on a sweet dream
Keeping an eye on this street scene
cause Im open for love
In the middle of town tonight
Had my fill of self-pity
I brought all my blues to the city
Guess Im pressing my lucky
In the middle of town tonight
See me waiting on you to smile back on me
Child
It looks like tomorrow
It seems like the end of a dream
Dawning on me on broadway
In the morning light its a dream
And Im just a fool
Looking for love on broadway

Lines written in the Belief that the Ancient Roman Festival of the Dead was called Ambarvalia
Swings the way still by hollow and hill,
And all the world's a song;
'She's far,' it sings me, 'but fair,' it rings me,
'Quiet,' it laughs, 'and strong!'
Oh! spite of the miles and years between us,
Spite of your chosen part,
I do remember; and I go
With laughter in my heart.
So above the little folk that know not,
Out of the white hill-town,
High up I clamber; and I remember;
And watch the day go down.
Gold is my heart, and the world's golden,
And one peak tipped with light;
And the air lies still about the hill
With the first fear of night;
Till mystery down the soundless valley
Thunders, and dark is here;
And the wind blows, and the light goes,
And the night is full of fear,
And I know, one night, on some far height,
In the tongue I never knew,
I yet shall hear the tidings clear
From them that were friends of you.
They'll call the news from hill to hill,
Dark and uncomforted,
Earth and sky and the winds; and I
Shall know that you are dead.
I shall not hear your trentals,
Nor eat your arval bread;
For the kin of you will surely do
Their duty by the dead.
Their little dull greasy eyes will water;
They'll paw you, and gulp afresh.
They'll sniffle and weep, and their thoughts will creep
Like flies on the cold flesh.
They will put pence on your grey eyes,
Bind up your fallen chin,
And lay you straight, the fools that loved you
Because they were your kin.
They will praise all the bad about you,
And hush the good away,
And wonder how they'll do without you,
And then they'll go away.
But quieter than one sleeping,
And stranger than of old,
You will not stir for weeping,
You will not mind the cold;
But through the night the lips will laugh not,
The hands will be in place,
And at length the hair be lying still
About the quiet face.
With snuffle and sniff and handkerchief,
And dim and decorous mirth,
With ham and sherry, they'll meet to bury
The lordliest lass of earth.
The little dead hearts will tramp ungrieving
Behind lone-riding you,
The heart so high, the heart so living,
Heart that they never knew.
I shall not hear your trentals,
Nor eat your arval bread,
Nor with smug breath tell lies of death
To the unanswering dead.
With snuffle and sniff and handkerchief,
The folk who loved you not
Will bury you, and go wondering
Back home. And you will rot.
But laughing and half-way up to heaven,
With wind and hill and star,
I yet shall keep, before I sleep,
Your Ambarvalia.

From a King to a Clown
Now that you are no longer around,
I feel like a King without a crown
Or a clown with a happy face,
Making everybody laugh in town
But feeling lost in space
For he has been broken apart,
Just playing his part
In the big stage of life
While feeling like a hound
With a destiny he cannot defy...
You made me a king,
Enjoying the pleasure
Of your amazing kingdom,
Letting me invade your dreams
Every single night
And held my hands every day
Whether it was Winter or Spring
With the tenderness and love
Of a real Queen...
To my life, You brought light
And the mirth of a gentle dove
But suddenly, you left town
Leaving me behind
With a broken heart
And lovely memories of yesterday
And from a king, I became a clown
To make the people laugh
The day you left my town
In the name of freedom!
Now, without you,
I feel lonely and sad! ...

First Date
Whatever happened
To the teenage romance
Is it hidden in a tacky magazine
Everybodys talking
Saying trash is neat
You think its good fun
But its never that free
Who is the man of the moment
Does his image stand ten feet tall
Or is he just a cardboard hero
Staring down at you from your wall
You can dream but you cant touch
You can dream but not too much
You can dream but you cant touch
You can dream but not too much
Friday night
Out on the town
Its a special date
First time around
You read all about the story book romance
He stands there waiting
And you want to hold his hand
Saturday
Youre broken down
Your heart is lying somewhere
Is it lost or found
You can dream but you cant touch
You can dream but not too much
You can dream but you cant touch
If this is love its not enough
You can dream but you cant touch
You can dream but not too much
You can dream but you cant touch
You want a love that costs too much
You can dream but you cant touch
If this is love its not enough
You can dream of tender touch
Dont let your heart be lost to love

The Ballad Of St. Anne's Reel
This song was first released on the autograph album. it is the only album it has been released on.
He was stranded in some tiny town
On fair prince edward isle
Awaitin' for a ship to come and find him
A one-horse place, a friendly face
Some coffee and a tiny trace
Of fiddlin' in the distance far behind him
A dime across the counter then
A shy hello, a brand new friend
A walk along the street in the wintry weather
A yellow light, an open door
And a welcome friend, there's room for more
And then they're standing there inside together
He said i've heard that tune before somewhere
But i can't remember when
Was it on some other friendly shore
Or did i hear it on the wind
Was it written on the sky above
I think i heard it from someone i loved
But i never heard it sound so sweet since then
Now his feet begin to tap
A little boy says i'll take your hat
He's caught up in the magic of her smile
And leap the heart inside him went
And off across the floor he sent
His clumsy body graceful as a child
He said there's magic in the fiddler's arm
There's magic in this town
There's magic in the dancers' feet
And the way they put them down
People smilin' everywhere
Boots and ribbons, locks of hair
And laughter and old blue suits and easter gowns
Now the sailors' gone, the room is bare
The old piano settin' there
Someone's hat's left hanging on the rack
And empty chairs, the wooden floor
That feels the touch of shoes no more
Awaitin' for the dancers to come back
And the fiddle's in the closet
Of some daughter of the town
The strings are broke and the bow is gone
And the cover's buttoned down
But sometimes on december nights
When the air is cold and the wind is right
There's a melody that passes through this town

To have a girl like you
I remember you coming
to Pretoria station
to say goodbye
while I caught the train
to a military camp
and four months of war.
The clock on the wall
showed that we were
half an hour early
and I bought you a can of Coke
at the café
before we walked
to the right platform
where the train
departing to Cape Town
had just come in
and I carried the brown duffle bag
and was dressed in my brown uniform
with shining boots and beret
and your big blue eyes
had a life of their own.
It was always first Cape Town,
then De Brug (at Bloemfontein) ,
next Luhatla and after that to war
and by then you knew that route.
There was a sad smile on your face
and you were beautiful
in a classical way and slender
and I gave you a hug
and a goodbye kiss
and when that train left
we both waved.
Other soldiers where also
looking and waving at you
and some to loved ones
and another officer said
that I was lucky
to have a girl like you
and the next goodbye
was at Waterkloof military airbase,
but you wouldn’t be in it
and I didn’t know it then.

1st Love
Never thought I would fall in love
I’m the kind of girl who never gets it right
who can't find her way
Who hopes eventually she'll be okay.
Dreamt of my night in shinning armour
My own Cinderella story
But I knew fairy tales never came true
Not for a girl like me
I always thought I would stand alone
The world against me
Never thought love would find me
Then came a guy who
Never swept me of my feet
I didn’t fall in love at 1st sight
didn’t see the stars
Or feel the world stop
Never knew he would be the one
Looking on the sweet moments
Cant help but smile
my prince never swept me off my feet
Never made me swoon
Or bend to my will
He matched my anger
And my passion
Made me smile
And cry
Laugh and scream
He pushed me as far as I could go
And still I loved him
So the small bliss in a lovers kiss
A gentle touch sends a shiver
A small smile just 1
Just for me
Sweet words whispered in twilight
Stolen hours by the sunlight
The tears came as fast as the smiles
He made me cry
Broke my heart and left me to bleed
Yet I still love him
Through the tears I see the smiles
The broken heart bleeds the memories
The kisses and the butterflies
If I fell I knew it was for him
A smile in a blizzard of tears
My light in the darkest hour
The guy who makes me smile through the tears
My prince did sweep me off my feet
And make my world spin
I just didn’t know it
He was my gentle conqueror
Even as I think back to the times we shared
I cant help but smile
Even when the song has long since sung the last symphony
The music still remains in the air
Just a distant beat
A sweet note just one
For my true love an me
Our story shall live through the ripples of memories
Of those who knew us
Love found is a gift
Love given is faith
Love lost is pain
Love felt in eternal
