Hermaphrodite
I'd seen her in the pub from time to time -
shortish height, slightly awkward jerky movements
not quite to be called boyish
like her haircut,
indeterminate of age -
a worn sixteen; an undeveloped twenty-six?
but in a year or two, she seemed the latter
though her vulnerable, aggressive stance
made age irrelevant.
had she been more confident, more inyerface
she'd have been lesbait, no doubt of that; I felt
uncomfortable around her, as you do, however kind,
around those who have not yet resolved their life.
but she didn't pose her boyishness; wore
her trousers without pride; didn't
give off that lesbian vibe.
she might almost have been
the girl in the girls' school play who was as tomboy
told to play the boy and
who wore the clothes
and hated it.
then she started coming in with her quiet,
steady boyfriend; sometimes with their dog; she seemed more relaxed.
I gave her no more thought;
was faintly happy for her, I found.
so there I was one day, pissing off twice the amount
of beer I'd drunk - strange, isn't it? - in the Gents;
the door opens, in she walks, stands two urinals away
and does her thing - I guessed... well, no,
I didn't take a closer look - for she was
challenging me to respond.
And I didn't have a response.
I'd never seen her
doing that before; maybe my age suited her for a role
in some sad psychodrama of her unhappy life,
I, cast, perhaps, as proxy father, uncle, teacher, godknowswhat..
I didn't respond; nor did sex
raise its tumescent head; in fact I'd say, rather the reverse.
Of course she couldn't have known
that English boarding school,
ages seven to twenty-one (for the really thick and desperate) ,
equips you with a knowledge of acquired hermaphroditism
of an innocent yet knowing kind - beyond, I'd guess,
the experience of many a born hermaphrodite...
to please your hero man
at any price
in any vice;
we called them 'fags'; it's the official term, and
snigger-free;
then later, play the macho game
of picking the most beautiful new boy
to be your 'fag'; flirt publicly,
...to show that it's not serious or queer...
and if you take it further, well, that's your concern,
just don't get found out;
or if you want to really win repute,
date the housemaid simultaneously...
I let her leave that restless restroom first,
it seemed fitting, in my determined, neutral state;
yet it left a sense of many serious matters of the human heart
unexplored; unresolved.

Childhood Friends
I've known you since you were nine or ten
when you played with my sister in her cardboard den.
You were a skinny bean pole, a silly little thing,
the first girl to get to me, with your incessant chattering.
Whenever I lifted my head, you always seemed to be there
haunting me with your presence and getting in my hair.
Repeatedly I told you to scram and even chased you away,
but you returned to play the game you liked to play.
In the late fifties on Alvaston park, on Sunday afternoons
a number of us listened to Radio One's top twenty tunes.
Whilst we were singing and dancing like typical noisy teens,
you were in the corner of my eye trying not to be seen.
When school days were over I entered a different world,
the sixties brought crazy times along with forward girls.
I had my share of girl friends and searched for more,
but then I noticed you, the girl next door.
You had changed from a caterpillar into a gorgeous butterfly,
but you couldn't see it, and didn't want to try.
I noticed your potential but was too busy to spend the time
to date and impress you, with partying and wine.
Besides your rural boyfriend preferred you as you were,
a girl that dressed like a boy with no feminine flare.
Several months later you asked me to take you out
sometime when I wasn't busy or gadding about.
I took you to the places I used to frequent at night,
you were without doubt a stunning sight.
You bought stylish clothes and changed your hair,
it was a privilege to take you anywhere.
Your boyfriend objected and didn't like the new you
he didn't know what else you were likely to do.
He made you choose between town and country,
but it really came down to him or me.

For My Foster Sister (about growing up with mom drunk)
We used to run through the sprinkler
we double jumped & skipped rope
we danced along to the radio
our lives were filled with hope
then something made her dad leave
and soon her mom was always drunk
she didn't have clean clothes to wear
she often felt like a dirty punk
she didn't have anyone to talk to
and the shades were always pulled tight
her mom didn't want any noise
and hated when she turned on the light
she no longer made her lunch
and asleep when she came home
she wore a ratty bathrobe
and never used a comb
it's a good thing the house was paid for
so she never had to sleep in the street
but if she didn't cash in coke bottles
she would never have anything to eat
nobody ever called the cops
they lived out towards the woods
she learned how to steal real well
and that's how she brought home goods
Mom used her welfare money
to buy her favorite drink
she ate all her leftovers
and put dishes in the sink
She didn't want a foster family
but was too scared not to tell
the day she found her on the floor
she told me her mom wasn't well
But instead of speaking out
She left home that day
she slept under the railway pass
got to school, ran all the way
We don't know who called the cops
but they cornered her in the hall
took her to the counselors office
where she stood against the wall
They told her - she had to move
in with a foster family
She didn't want to leave her mom
but is how it was to be
She cried at the funeral
for a mom who wasn't there
and moved around a lot after that
her mom's death too much to bear
She graduated college
just the other day
that foster family that took her in
we helped her make her own way
She never thought she'd love again
after her mom was gone
but we've learned a lot since then
and we know her mom was wrong
When her dad left he took her pride
and she lost all control
she couldn't raise her by herself
with booze she drowned her soul
We've been to her grave
and planted a flower cover
cause even though she was a drunk
she still her mother

Gross stupidity
It was at a time
where you had
to wear a uniform to school,
had to cut your hair
to a predetermined length
and got caned
if you were naughty,
failed a test,
or sometimes
to let the teacher
enforce his will.
If you complained at home
about getting a hiding at school,
you would probably
get another there too
if you deserved it,
but if you were right,
were punished unfairly
or without a real cause
it was seen in a different light
and a teacher
or whoever the punisher was
would have to face
your father in a fight
and could easily
be hit into hospital.
School regulations stipulated
that you couldn’t receive
more than six whippings on a day,
but at Estcourt high school
on my first day
at the new school
in standard nine (now grade eleven)
I received twelve.
We were lining up
to go to the hall
and a prefect told me
to cut my hair
which were just a bit
longer than how
they wanted it.
I said that I would
and while we were walking
to the entrance of the hall
I was told the same thing
over and over again.
On the eighth time
I told the English prefect
in Afrikaans
not to catch the pip
which was a Afrikaans adage
for do not catch a fit.
He told me to repeat
what I had said,
which I did
and thought
that I was cursing him
and took me
to the Headboy
who was English.
Where I had to repeat
myself again
and I did
as believed in telling
the truth.
The head boy took me
to the principal,
(Mister Robert Smith) ,
who thought
that I was saying
something like
go and play
with your member.
He called in the
vice-principal
(another Englishman) ,
a man with a red beard,
who was convinced
that I was cursing,
who shoved my head
under a table
and whipped me six times.
When I explained what it meant
they didn’t believe me
and called in a teacher
who taught Afrikaans
and the principal gave me
another six whippings
for being insubordinate
and wanted to expel me
if I didn’t have my hair cut
on by the next day.
I didn’t tell my stepfather
(who wasn’t a dad to me) ,
but even he
would have sorted
the headmaster
and vice-principal out
and it would have been
the Anglo-Boer war
all over again.
At the time I thought
that I was grossly stupid,
but thinking back
the headmaster and vice-principal
was probably more so.

And That's Why
I didn’t call and wish you a happy fathers day today
Cause everyone called and told me today.
Did you need for us to call you on this day?
Just like the kids wanted to play that day?
I didn’t call and wish you a happy fathers day today
Because you haven’t seen your kids in 21 days
I bet they wanted to play within those days
So that’s why I didn’t call and tell you happy fathers day
I called and told my daddy happy father’s day
Because he calls me each and every day
When you didn’t buy those diapers
He came through, just like always
When the kids wanted to play
Your brothers dad came around and stayed
So I wished him a happy father’s day today
I wished all my single mothers’ happy father’s day
Because they go through the same thing i do
And they wished me a happy father’s day too
So that’s why I didn’t call you
You called too,
But I was sleeping
Because I have to work two jobs
To take up for what you don’t do
So that’s why I didn’t call you
I put your son on the phone when I woke up
To call and wish his father a happy father’s day
And guess what?
You hung up!
Now do you see why I don’t call and wish you a happy father’s day?

Didnt Know
Didn't know what you had
Until you lost it
Didn't know what you own
Until you got it
Didn't know of your sins
Until you fought it.
Didn't know what you needed
Until you sought it.
Didn't know your lies
Until someone spoke them
Didn't know of the truth
Until someone wrote them
Didn't remembered your dreams
Until someone awoke them
Didn't know they died
Until someone chocked them.
Didn't know you had guilt
Until you cried
Didn't know you felt sadness
Until you tried to hide
Didn't know you felt shame
Until you lied
Didn't know you believed in GOD
Until you asked him why.
Didn't know you felt sorrow
Until you shed a tear
Didn't know that you were scared
Until I saw your fear
Didn't know that you hated
Until you were near
Didn't know that you were unhappy
Until you looked in a mirror.
Didn't know who you truly were
Until your ways you sewed
Didn't know that you were evil
Until the truth was showed
Didn't know you did this before
Until I saw all of your woe
Didn't know who you really were
Though I wished then I did know.

Sincerely
If I had been You I would have left
Said there's nothing else that I can do
But You saw somethig deep inside of me
I had no idea but I was crying for you
Didn't have to make the sacrifice
Didn't have to come and save my life
Didn't have to pay the price for me
Sincerely I'm not worthy
Didn't have to give all that You gave
No way I could ever walk away
Here's the only thing that I can say
Yours truly thou art worthy
I can't believe You've chosen to reveal
Never ending mercy towards a heart that's been so faithless
The fact that You want to show Yourself to me
My knees grow weak can hardly speak
For your love has been relentless
Didn't have to make the sacrifice
Didn't have to come and save my life
Didn't have to pay the price for me
Sincerely I'm not worthy
Didn't have to give all that You gave
No way I could ever walk away
Here's the only thing that I can say
Yours truly thou art worthy
How can I repay You for the things that You've done for me
Dear God
I call to You
Make me more like You
My way to say thank You
Is do all that you say
Didn't have to make the sacrifice
Didn't have to come and save my life
Didn't have to pay the price for me
Sincerely I'm not worthy
Didn't have to give all that You gave
No wayI could everwalk away
Here's the only thing that I can say
Yours truly thou art worthy

Let's take the boat out on the bay
Forget your job for just one day
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
It might be innapropriate because
Either way our band get dropped
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
But I'd play with fire to break the ice
And I'd play with a nuclear device
Is it something I'll regret?
Why do I wan't what I can't get?
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
The three-date theory is getting old
Everyone is getting left out in the cold
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
So I'll see you with another guy
Who pretends not to hear you when you cry
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
But I'd play with fire to break the ice
And I'd play with a nuclear device
Is it something I'll regret?
Why do I want what I can't get?
I wish it didn't have to be so bad
I'll be moving on

Last To Know
[Chorus]
Why was I the last to know
That you weren't coming to my show you coulda
Called me up to say "good luck"
You coulda called me back you stupid f***
Why was I the last to know?
[Verse 1]
First date, we ate sushi and
It went well, I was funny and
You said I was a cutie
That's the last thing I heard from you
I left the tickets at the door for you
I had to tell my mom that there was
No more room
You didn't show, that was so uncool
You coulda called me back
So i guess this means that we're
Not friends anymore, I heard
It's me you're asking for, I thought
I'd see you at the show
You said you'd go
[Chorus]
[Verse 2]
After the date, I wouldn't go
Home with you
I wouldn't put my heels in the
Air for you
You tried to get me to do things
I just won't do
Last I heard from you
Here is how I guess the story goes
You woulda came if I was a ho
F*** for parts that's just not how
I roll, move it on down the road
So I guess, we, shouldn't be
Friends anymore, sick of hearin'
That it's me you're askin' for
'Cause I thought I'd see you at the
Show, you said you'd go!
[Chorus]
You thought you know me
I guess you didn't
You thought you had me
I think you didn't
You thought you knew me
But you didn't

Where they belonged
When I was in metric
(now grade twelve)
in the agricultural science class
an English girl took a chair
next to me
who had a secret crush
without getting
any attention from me.
I just wasn’t taken with her
and she was a little brash
and they lived
on the other side
of the railway tracks
and she had a reputation
of sleeping around.
When we studied
animal copulation
she acted as if
she didn’t really understand
and asked me some questions
which made me blush
and it was clear
that she had other plans instead.
Ignoring her didn’t help much
and heart broken she went to cry
on her sister’s shoulder
who was my class teacher
and taught me English
at the time.
We did an IQ test
(the first in my years at school)
and I scored only too well
and without really knowing
my personal circumstances
the teacher told the class
that I was lazy,
but much more than that
she marked my English grades down.
I didn’t know what had got into her
and in the second quarter
like a angel from heaven
a female inspector
(specializing in English)
visited the school.
She couldn’t understand
why my marks had slipped so much
and we had a very nice chat
where she demanded
all my English books and tests.
She graded everything again,
my grades took a hike,
the teacher was called in
and almost did the same
and after that
my grades were where
they belonged.

Breathe
Two men
They started walking
Started talking bout better days
One says to the other
We do it all again
Seems I knew I would
And now I found it
Found I got it
I didn't want this
Somebody help me see
Now I feel it
Feel like I've been there
I didn't need this
Somebody help me breathe
Here we are again
Just face to facing
Each other another day
Who wins
Well who cares
It always ends up the same
Seems I knew I would
And now I found it
Found I got it
I didn't want this
Somebody help me see
And now I feel it
Feel that I've been there
I didn't need this
Would Somebody help me stand
And now I've told them
Already warned them
I didn't want this
Somebody help me breathe
If I was them
Then I wanna be
What I see
If I could drag my life in a moment
Wanna know do you want me to go
Gonna keep it all from ending
Never stop myself from pretending
That you always knew that I never could
All I ever really wanted was to be the same
Equal treatment never ever comes
and there they go again
All I ever really wanted was to be like you
So perfect
So worthless
If i could take it all back think again
I would
And now I found it
Found I got it
I didn't want this
Somebody help me see
Now I feel it
Feel that I've been there
I didn't need this
Somebody help me stand
And now I've told them
I didn't want this
I didn't need this
Would somebody help me breathe
Would somebody help me breathe
Would somebody help me?

I Can Play (Lyrics) :
He didn't give himself up to fear.
And his voice had a life of its own.
He didn't give himself up for broke.
Just a man who played his guitar.
He said 'I can play the guitar', 'I can play it clear'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play'.
'I can play the songs that you want to hear'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play it clear'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play'.
'I can play the songs that you want to hear'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play'.
He didn't give himself up to drinking beer.
His voice still had a life of its own.
And he didn't give himself up for smoke.
Just a man who played his guitar.
He said 'I can play the guitar'.'I can play it clear'.
He didn't give himself up to curcumstance.
Always tried to make it alone.
He didn't give himself up to telling lies.
His honesty was already shown.
Always kept himself up to par.
Just a man who played his guitar.
He said 'I can play the guitar'.'I can play it clear'.
'I can play the guitar'.'I can play'...

English Girls Approximately
English girls are pretty when they play guitar
Crazy like a day just a-breaking I ain't sure what for
Ain't got a mother or father or place to fall
She got a brother in the (blues / booze), but he doesn't know the blues at all
Said you didn't love me, it was right on time, I was just about to tell you but ok alright
Said you didn't love me, didn't want a thing, English girls can be so mean
She's got eyes as pretty as a pair of jewels
Falling down a canyon like a couple drunken criminals
She had a messy bedroom on the edge of town
I ain't ever been good enough to ever keep around
Said you didn't love me, it was right on time, I was just about to tell you but ok alright
Said you didn't love me, didn't mean a thing, English girls can be so mean
But, ohh, look at you now
Ohh, look at you now
Mmmm, best I've ever seen
Just a tall drink of water, just a-pourin' on down the sink
Tall drink of water, she's a Norfolk waterfall
Little daybreaker, she's a shootin' like a cannonball
Crazy like a rocket when you're coming through my radio
Kept me in your bed till the wintertime turned to fall
Fall time coming, and I guess my little bird can sing
Come on Elizabeth, a come on a Bethany
Come on further, I'm tired and I want to sleep
My little dove do, and I guess she was done with me
Said you didn't love me, it was right on time, I was just about to tell you but ok alright
Said you didn't love me, didn't want a thing, English girls can be so mean
But ohh, look at you now
Ohh, look at you now
Mmmm, best I've ever seen
Just a tall drink of water, just a-pourin' on down the sink
Kiss me on the lips when my heart just laughed it off
Words may move, but there never moving fast enough
Celebrate the differences, I celebrate the songs you sing
Just three words, my love: you meant everything
You meant everything
You meant everything
You meant everything

Time Of Our Life
Hey, I can see that smile on your face
Tonight, memories will never erase
And I feel like our time has come
Our hearts are beating wild as one
True love, I know is hard to find
But you tonight, You're mine
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Hey, I hope you feel the same way I feel
Cause tonight the moon, the stars,
This moment is so real, To us we had everything
Our hearts have a song to sing
We now know that dreams come true
Cause now there's me and you
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we dance the night away
What can I say to you, You make life a holiday
Let's go and play, Let's go and play
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Didn't we have the time of our life tonight
Come on and sing the song
Come on and sing along

Give You What You Want
Why didn't I call, why didn't I fall
Why didn't I hang my heart on your wall
Why didn't I know, why didn't I show
All my feelings from the word go
So if you love me, don't leave me
I promise that you'll never lack
'Cause this man's on his knees,
begging' please
Baby turn your back, yeah
I'll give you what you want
I'll do anything to make you mine
If you give me what I want
I will be yours to the end of time
Girl you won't be sorry
And you won't regret it
There's no need to worry, only if you let it
Why didn't I say, the thing that I read
Why didn't I see the signs in my head
Why didn't I speak, to you last week
When I saw you walking down my street
So if you love me, don't leave me
Alone here to die on this track
Girl rescue me, let's get this train
And we'll never look back
[Chorus]
Girl you won't be sorry
And you won't regret it
There's no need to worry, only if you let it
Oh, wow I can't let go
Oh, wow, I swear I'll take it slow
[Chorus (repeat)]

Didn't You Know (You'd Have To Cry Sometime)
(Nickolas Ashford/Valerie Simpson)
Remember when you left?
You had your own rules about playing the game
And any day, you could walk away feeling no pain
Now look at yourself
You're all hung up on somebody else
And in your eyes I see all the signs of the misery
That you laid on me
Baby, baby
Didn't you know you'd have to cry sometime?
Didn't you know
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?
Didn't you know that you'd lose your pride?
Didn't anybody tell you love had another side?
You used to be so proud
Now, your head's a little lower
And you walk slower
And you don't talk so loud
You've gotten wise
You know how love can build you up one moment
And the next, cut you down to size
Then you discover
All she told you was a bunch of lies
Baby, baby
Didn't you know you'd have to cry sometime?
Didn't you know
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?
Didn't you know that you'd lose your pride?
Didn't anybody tell you love had another side?
Baby, baby
Didn't you know you'd have to cry sometime?
Didn't you know
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?
Didn't you know you'd have to cry sometime?
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?
Didn't you know you'd have to hurt sometime?

Roseville
Since All Of My Remembering
Of Times So Innocent And So Clean
These Images Rush In With A Roar
Of Times And Acts That Were A Horror
My Folks Moved To Roseville When We Were So Young
To Protect Us From The Hazards Of A World Gone Wrong
Little Did They Know What A Mess They've Made
By Moving Us Out Here A Price Would Be Paid
A Childhood Spent Having Innocent Fun
Between 5 And Eight With My Friends We'd Run
Playing In The Fields Across The Street
Little Did We Know Just What We'd Meet
Older Boys Came Along Just To Play With Us
Spinning Us Around, Beneath Our Skirts With Thrusts
Diddling All Around In Between Our Legs
Little Did We Know We Were Being Pegged
They Would Fumble Here And Grumble There
Unzipping Their Old Trousers Just To Have A Share
Being Little Girls, What All Did We Know
We'd Just Play Along Until They Would Go
This Type Of Thing Went On Every Spring Til Fall
We'd Be Wondering What They Were Doing At All
We Were Happy That They Would Take Time With Us
We Were Just So Young What Was All The Fuss
Then One Day A Big Brother Of My Friend Appeared
Said To The Other Older Boy's "Hands Off My Sisters, Hear? "
In My Mind It All Then Became Oh So Clear
That These Older Boys Were Just Being Queer
The Next Time That They All Came Running Around
I Said I Don't Like The Way You Want To Play Around
But They Didn't Listen All And Penetrated My Best Friend
I Ran As Fast As I Could Hoping It Would End
But I Was Chased And That Raji Did Say
Don't Tell Anyone As I Ran Away
But I Cut My Foot To The Bone So Cruel
Being So Innocent, Didn't Know What To Do
Didn't Tell My Mom, Didn't Tell My Dad
I Was So Ashamed That I'd Been So Had
How Could Playing Around Turn To Something So Foul
So I Wrapped My Foot And Began To Howl
Did This Kind Of Thing Happen Everywhere
With Everyone Around, Not Even Saying Whats Fair
We Believed In The Justice Of Living Out A Good Life
How Could So Much Go Wrong And Cause So Much Strife
Living In Roseville Did Mess Up My Head
With So Many Queer Folk Boys And Men So Dead
To The Rights And The Thoughts Of What's All Good And Fair
With Their Pedophilic Actions To Do Such Wrong Down There
These Are My Images Of Growing Up So Serene
And Protected From The Filth Of Detroit And That Scene
What A Joke Now Do I So Realize
That Living In Roseville Was Just A Cradle Of Lies

Wish I Didn't Know Now
I've never ask you where you're goin'
I've never ask you where you've been
I've never called and checked your story
You stayed out with all your freinds
I've never tried to catch you lyin'
I didn't want to know the truth
I'd rather go on lovin' blind girl
Than go on lovin' without you
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then
I wish I could start this whole thing over again
I'm not sayin' it's you could never be true
I just don't wanna know how it ends
You'd still have my heart in the palm of your hands
I'd still look like a fool in front of your friends
Yeah I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then
I've always said what I don't know
Couldn't hurt as bad as leavin' you
Turns out I knew what I was thinkin'
It ain't an easy thing to do
Well I guess I should be goin'
I sure found out too much to stay
Please don't say your sorry
I might wait another day
I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then
I wish I could start this whole thing over again
I'm not sayin' it's you could never be true
I just don't wanna know how it ends
You'd still have my heart in the palm of your hands
I'd still look like a fool in front of your friends
Yeah I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then
You'd still have my heart in the palm of your hand
I'd still look like a fool in front of your freinds
Yeah I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then
Yeah I wish somehow I didn't know now what I didn't know then

Light Of Some Kind
i wish i didn't have this nervous laugh
i wish i didn't say half the stuff i say
i wish i could just learn to cover my tracks
i guess i'm not concerned about getting away
'cause every time i try to hold my tongue
it slips like a fish from a line
they say if you want to play
you should learn how to play dumb
i guess i can't bring myself to waste your time
'cause we both know what i've been doing
i've been intentionally bad at lying
you're the only boy i ever let see through me
and i hope you beleive me when i say i'm trying
and i hope i never improve my game
yeah i'd rather have these things weighing on my mind
and at the end of this tunnel of guilt and shame
there must be a light of some kind
there must be a light of some kind
i must have blown a fuse or something
cause it was so dark in my mind
she came up to me with the sweetest face
and she was holding a light of some kind
and i still think of you as my boyfriend
i don't think this is the end of the world
but i think maybe you should follow my example
and go meet yourself a really nice girl
'cause we both know. . .
in the end the world comes down to just a few people
but for you it comes down to one
but no one ever asked me if i thought i could be
everything to someone
there's a crowd of people harboured in every person
there are so many roles that we play
and you've decided to love me for eternity
i'm still deciding who i want to be today
'cause we both know. . .
