Just Too Much

A discussion of politics and I fall asleep, voices
droning about boring facts - after I had my say
about Greece and destitute refugees in the Cote
d’Ivoire, we watch another documentary about
solar power to save us from nuclear disaster

I black out, a solicitous colleague shakes me awake
I wriggle in my seat; next week, our enthusiastic
teacher says, each must do a speech on South
African politics discussing the party of their choice
in detail – I give up, resigned I decide

I cannot attend this class, I shall completely lose
my mind in the boredom of this, will have to flee
the subject of politics as it drives me insane, the
stink of inefficient states and the self-serving
politicians defrauding their own people

Is just too much…

In Heaven

Two Leo’s in class – French professeur from Alliançe
Française and student from le Service du Changement
Climatique who wrote a a theme song for COP, oh wow,
what joy, my professeur hates grammar and politics as
much as I do

Speaks Afrikaans fluently, hates acronyms, refuses to look
at them, loves teaching, gave up translation as boring, talks
to her computer; Shumi, student who sings songs & dresses
beautifully; starting on Gaulois, ending up with Camel before
Marius ran off

We talked about maquillage - not wearing make-up and having
fun – finally my patience paid off, no need to fall asleep in a
class discussing cut-throat politics – I must have died
and woken in heaven - methinks!

Politics is not predictions and politics is not observations. Politics is what we do. Politics is what we do, politics is what we create, by what we work for, by what we hope for and what we dare to imagine.

I believe people who go into politics want to do the right thing. And then they hit a big wall of re-election and the pettiness of politics. In the end, politics gets in the way of the business of people.

Politics

in this country of mine
there is so much politicking

they want to know my color
they want me black
pure black
the other side wants me to be white
unadulterated white

i tell them i want to have no color at all
i just want to be myself
like a neutral transparent rain water
and all of them are angry
i cannot please everybody i said
but they do not listen

they put politics in the pulpit
in the market even in the cemetery
they put politics in the air and in the water
and in the soil
and even in the sub-soil
the worms are getting political too
and even the hawks and finches

the pebbles have no choice
but to go political too
they are now in disagreement with the river
and the bamboo trees

there is chaos in the mountain
the waterfalls rage
and then politics eventually destroys the
ecosystem
and the heavens and the purgatory

now there is only hell.

this morning they put politics as breakfast on my table.
i decided finally not to eat any.

Do we want an Attorney General who will play politics with the law, play politics with the court and just play politics with international conventions designed to protect our troops? I do not want to play that kind of politics. I am going to vote against Alberto Gonzales.

Politics What I Understand

Politics is: process of transfer
to the politicians, of public power;

Science of public reigning
and government running;

Formulation of regulation and policy
to apply on, and reign the public
leaving escape door for them
and those who overwhelm;

Keeping nearest groups satisfied
and other groups pacified;

Seeing public in difficulty
being apathy but showing sympathy;

Politically remove all those
In way of their whim who arose:

To show malign image of opposition party
and join their dinner party;

This is what I could understand
Politics is like tusks of elephant.

Most politicians - those people who live, eat and breathe politics - like to sit around and talk about politics and tell political war stories. Reagan didn't do that. His war stories were movie war stories and Hollywood war stories. He loved that.

On Irish Politics And Politicians

Politics in the Republic of Ireland with any joy I can't recall
Nepotism rife in the ranks of the three major parties Labour, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail
Jobs for their kin and their mates only Irish Politicians in their ways so small
In Politics since my time in Ireland suppose things would not have changed much at all
I was never a member of any Irish Political Party to me they seemed a very flawed lot
The way they conducted their business I certainly haven't forgot
Any one party not cleaner than the other honest politicians anywhere hard to be found
I recall amongst Irish Politicians that nepotism did abound
They grew old and retired on their big pensions they took care of themselves and their own
Honesty and fairness with them not a high priority the most of them for such not known
When they spoke of doing good for the Country they did not mean what they did say
They only helped their families, friends and relations respect to them I could not pay
There were a few honourable Irish Politicians just a few that I can recall
But honesty does not survive well amongst Politicians they are a flawed lot overall.

Politics Of Kissing

Shes looking back to see if hes looking at her
They talk without any words
And with a smile hes moving heaven and earth
She dreams of holding him tight
When will the moment be right
Got to be diplomatic, a step at a time
Dont want to blow it baby
Chorus:
Thats the politics of kissing
To know when to show your hand
First thoughts then second guessing
A subtle supply and demand
Balance of power baby
To hold or not to hold
Thats the politics of kissing
Youre finding your way as you go, go, go
How do you know
Head over heels under the moon looking at you
But do you feel it too
And if I move in closer what will you do
Cause Im thinking please hold me tight
Am I the light in your eyes
I wish you had the power for reading my mind
cause Ill never say it to you
(repeat chorus)
Oh-oo-oh-oo-oh, oh-oo-oh-oo-oh
Oh-oo-oh-oo-oh, oh-oo-oh-oo-oh
Oh-oo-oh-oo-oh-oo-oh
Oh-oo-oh-oo-oh, oh-oo-oh-oo-oh
Oh-oo-oh-oo-oh-oo-oh
Hear what Im sayin to ya
Thats the politics of kissing
To know when to show your hand
First thoughts then second guessing
A subtle supply and demand
Balance of power baby
To hold or not to hold
Thats the politics of kissing
Thats the politics of kissing
To know when to show your hand
First thoughts then second guessing
A subtle supply and demand
Balance of power baby
To hold or not to hold
Thats the politics of kissing

I'm an American, and always will be. I happen to love that big, awkward, sprawling country very much — and its big, awkward, sprawling people. Anyway, I don't like politics; and I don't make "political gestures" … I don't even believe in politics. To me, politics is like one of those annoying, and potentially dangerous (but generally just painful) chronic diseases that you just have to put up with in your life if you happen to have contracted it. Politics is like having diabetes. It's a science, a catch-as-catch-can science, which has grown up out of simple animal necessity more than anything else. If I were twice as big as I am, and twice as physically strong, I think I'd be a total anarchist.

Party Bound Politicians July 4th,2012

PARTY BOUND POLITICIANS July 4th,2012
By
James Bredin

Our Canadian politicians are reluctant to change,
If they do they will be immediately told that this is strange,
They are party politicians and not allowed an independent thought,
They have to follow the party line and not be distraught.

Canada should have a system where they have some independence,
And not march in step, completely party bound in their dependence,
We should have proportional representation for those who should vote,
And compulsory votes or added tax so all constituents take note.

Party politics is in many ways like a religious belief,
Those who change are treated as sacrilegious with great grief,
Those who want death with dignity are looked at as pagans or worse,
Supreme Court decisions here will not allow for anything diverse.
