Shadow

Shape of everything, made of black reflection.
Contrasted from the yellow sun on the bricks' wall.
Body without face, passage without a view.
Figure that you cannot interview.

Shadow, snitcher of light
Hide, from fences of eyes,
For reaper strong and weird.

From the tree blow by the wind,
The leafs fly, attached to the pavements' sky.
Mixing around, invisible outline.
Of a cone pointed shape of irregular shade.

And the smoke held by the tree hock.
Heat the warm floor, of spots & shoots.
Intoxicating the shadow, like through harrow.
Fading away on the windy shallow.

Art of Shadow

for David Hartanto, may the truth reveal

follow the move
like faithful rook
shape the face
hide the rest
fake the real
the shady deal
witness of crime
smile from darkness
trick of eyes
hand behind curtain
in the row
under the tow
live as flow
but never show
in the mirror, in the wall
invisible harlequin, long-legged lover
narcissus tragedy, the fate of echo
the silhouette, the shade
the play, the dance
make a serenade
under the moonlight
the ghost of past, the future trace
the tinted heart, the tainted world
when there is a light
there will always be
shadow, shadow
the silent dark partner

An Individuality

i am always a shade of something else
a background for instance
am i not a part of it? i am.

in the dark, i am black
so what do you see? just darkness
how can i be a ghost? a mist?
a white fog amidst the sea of darkness
a soul floating in cold air
you will be afraid for what you will see
so i am but a black shadow
blending with the night
you see nothing
but i shall speak in the comfort of your sleep

during the day
i assume the shape of a body
settle on the mind
live on the plain and the green grass
take the shade of the big tree
and wade myself on the shallow waters
we will be there
enjoying the conversation
sipping tea
and watching the seagulls
we shall take the beauty
in the most ordinary ways we can
spectators and distant from the touch
of pain and too careful about desire

you see? how can we be hurt
an island to an island
between us the ocean

To Write About The Tree

to write about the tree and the sun
how do they ever stand each other?
is it the need? is it the love?
i cannot really write about it.
i always see them there as i sit under the tree's shade.
as i scorch myself under the sun's heat.
i could have written about the unfolding to the red flower
and the wonder of the grass.
i am helpless now.
i am addicted to something else inside the room.
on a dim light. on a warm bed.
do not say a name. do not mention about the shape of
the human body.
yes, it is. and will always be.
the human anatomy speaking about itself.
love is not a word there. it is a view. it is a touch.
it is beyond what is good and what is wrong.
it is the silence. it is the swallowing of what we are.
it is the rubbing of skin. until the universe
ejaculates what it keeps.
until the earth reveals what is in that womb.
it is the unreasoning of life's rules.
it is merely the flow.
nothing else.

In Itself, A Long Time Ago, But Which We Did Not Notice

at the earliest hour of the morning
this first day of January, i hear a faint cry from the
valley, outside this old house, seemingly like a
cry from my imagination,
my mind listening to the sound
of its making

i knew i heard it, it was like
a shrill voice of a little girl,
or was it a parrot, or the vine,
or from the distant wind,

sunlight lands in my skin from its distant flight
no longer a soft shade, or a leaning shadow, a little shallow
it is outside my flesh, this body

it does not come from this daily monologue
of a memory fading with the passage of time
the sun emerges from the hills and mountains
and walls and fences, and boundaries, and markings
outside my body

that faint cry - it has a personal note of its own
like a blow of a horn, it comes from the sun's majesty

surrounded by the laces of its own
magnificent roundness, yet still far away from me
a trillion miles, a number of light years

it is like a fresh awareness, a new way of looking at things, of what
was there a long time ago.

Me And My Shadow

Sometimes, my shadow appears really short and small;
Whilst, at others, it stretches ahead of me, thin and tall.
Sometimes, my shadow is behind me; sometimes it’s in front.
Quite often, for my shadow, I find myself having to hunt.

Depending on how the street lamps shine their light,
My shadow may be hidden, or may be within my sight.
Sometimes, I have two shadows, plus me;
Then I appear in triplicate: one, two, three.

Sometimes, when I take my time, my shadow seems to rush;
My shadow dances round me, amid the dark night’s hush.
When I wander through an unlit patch, my shadow disappears;
Although I cannot see it for a moment, I know that it is still near.

As I emerge back into the light, I’m rejoined by my shadow.
My best buddy and I are very firmly attached, down at the toe.
My shadow is featureless; of me, it’s just a darkened outline.
During my night-time journey, it’s an ever changing design.

To my shadowy friend, I do feel really very attached.
We are two of a kind, and, I think, very well matched.
My shadow and I, travel everywhere together;
From each other, we will never ever be severed.

Man Watches And Sees

Man watches you hide behind
your shadow.
Why do you think you need to
to hide?

No man should want to hide
along side or behind his
shadow.

Stand up and show your
face to man.

Your life will still travel on.
And your shadow, will
follow behind.

No shadow can stay still
even at your will.

You are, your shadow of you..
You'll always travel together
It'll be forever.

No man can travel without
his shadow.
As long as there is light
from earth or man made.

Then you will always travel along
with your shadow

Hello Shadows

Shadows imitate every thing in life
But it does not argue, fuss, or fight
And can be changed by the reflection of light
Your shadow will imitate everything that you do
For that shadow belongs to you.

The shadow of an object can
hide you from the sun
Not just you but every one.

Shadows have but one color (black)
And it is not belittled or put down
But accepted by all you see
Which makes it one of gods mysteries.

It can be seen in the sunlight
But not in the dark
It can even be seen with artificial light
And the kids have fun with it
Man! What a sight.

It has no face to show emotions
And it will always be by your side
Although at times it must hide.
The sun can not touch it, as it stares up at you
This is something the sun can not do.

The shadow will walk in front of you
Or in back, or walk on your sides
But will always be there wherever you go
For it is something that we all know
And to my shadow I say “hello”.

Shape Me Like A Man

Spark my body into existence
Breath your life into me
Fill these eyes with temptation
Work your mystery
Make me in the image you desire
Raise me up from the earth
Let me be your creation
Women, give me birth
Take me in your hands
And shape me like a man
Shape me like a man
Put this broken body in motion
With a strong and natural drive
Fill my flesh with sensation
Women let me know Im alive
Take me in your hands
And shape me like a man
Shape me like a man

Shape me like a man

Light And Shadow

the shadow hides itself
behind the body
away from light that
stabs it to
death

'too much light' says the
shadow
' amidst this heat
i shall perish' the shadow
fears

the body is there
as shield
and protects the shadow
from extinction

'not too dark' warns the shadow
i must be in the middle
somewhere

where light makes love
with absence
the shadow to its fullness

Poetics

I look for the way
things will turn
out spiralling from a center,
the shape
things will take to come forth in

so that the birch tree white
touched black at branches
will stand out
wind-glittering
totally its apparent self:

I look for the forms
things want to come as

from what black wells of possibility,
how a thing will
unfold:

not the shape on paper -- though
that, too -- but the
uninterfering means on paper:

not so much looking for the shape
as being available
to any shape that may be
summoning itself
through me
from the self not mine but ours.

8.8.88: She came back from the land of democrative destiny and dissolved
into the chaotic void.
Fighting for the freedom of reality
Building the light house in the darkest hours of life
Fixing up the spiritual essence through the existential nothingness

Fantasy...

A tree and its shadow
And a dreamy meadow
Waiting for someone....

The Shadow asks ' how is she doing? '
Tree whispers ' shhh! sleeping'
'oops! sorry' says shadow and waits
waiting...they are for the flower that sleeps
on a thin green brunch of the tree
The tree, now drowsy, as sun
Readies itself to set, for the night
and the little shadow? it grows unwatched
With the dimming light

The Tree sleeps,
The meadow sleeps
Huts sleep
and the man inside it
Is in slumber too
Tiny little shadow grows into night
Embraces life with darkness punctured with lights

Dawn Awakes
Sun rays come running back to the tree
Tree asks 'my shadow? where IS he? '
the Tallest palm tree, sky abreast
says 'i think I saw him running northwest! '

The Shadow creeps in and stands upon a pebble
Says ' i wana see...i wana see! ' with boyish charm

Then The flower finally falls
Into shadow's lap
'shh! she's still taking a nap! '
says tree to his friend

Wind blows, it wants to play with her
The sleeping beauty, The flower
'Look! Look! ...she's smiling!
She's happy! she must be dreaming! '
The shadow hushes, excited!

A girl comes out of the hut...
Takes the flower, the sweet, from Shadows lap
What will you do with her, little girl?
She's taking a nap! '

'I'll play with it', the little girl says
The Shadow starts crying
The tree wishpers...
' dont cry dear...let it be...
Tommorrow morning You'll see
Our flower is back with us
On your lap she's lying!

Night comes again
Tree and its shadow sleeps
with Dreamy smiles on their lips

Dawn brings light to the tree and shadow
They wake up and see
Adorned with Dew drops like some rare gems
Their Sweet little flower is back with them!

Shadow Song

Did your shadow ever speak to you?
And did he say that something's wrong?
Only a figure on a lamplit wall
Never realized he cared at all
Did he stop you going on?
Guess my shadow spoke to me tonight
And made me throw my dreams away
Told a story of a twisted man
Who was playing with some foolish plan
'Bout a girl who had flew away
Sometimes shadows are near
I see things very clear: my life unwinds
Somewhere I'll make my stand
Look around at yesterday
And change my mind
Now your shadow isn't always there
In the light of cloudy days
Or in circles where you hide from view
All the dust that ever bothered you
And where people loose your name

The Shape of the Wind...

The arctic blasts turn men into plaster casts,
They take the shape of the wind.
The ragged sails lashed by the gales,
Are full of the the shape of the wind.

The shrewd and wise, with half closed eyes,
Can guess the way of the wind.
They bend and bow, and go with the flow,
They take the shape of the wind.

The evening fires make crooked spires,
As they give way to the shape of the wind.
My ice cold breath meets it’s sudden death,
As it takes the shape of the wind.

And all our life, with all it’s strife,
Is nought but the shape of the wind.
So no longer resist, just desist,
And accept the shape of the wind.

Shadow

Your body's warm but you are not
You give a little not a lot
It could be love until we kiss
You're all I want but not like this
I'm watching you disappear
But you, you were never here
CHOURS
It's only your shadow,
Never yourself
It's only your shadow,
Nobody else
It's only your shadow,
Filling the room
Arriving too late
And leaving too soon.
And leaving too soon.
Your body gives but then holds back
The sun is bright the sky is black
Can only be another sign
I can not I keep what isn't mine
Your laughter, it lingers on
But you, you were almost gone
CHOURS
It's only your shadow,
Never yourself
It's only your shadow,
Nobody else
It's only your shadow,
Filling the room
Arriving too late
And leaving too soon.
And leaving too soon.
How can I tell if you mean what you say?
You say it so loud but you sound far away
Maybe I'll have just a glimpse of your soul
Or was that your shadow I saw on the wall?
I'm watching you disappear
But you, you were never here.
CHOURS
It's only your shadow,
Never yourself
It's only your shadow,
Nobody else
It's only your shadow,
Filling the room
Arriving too late
No, no, no
It's only your shadow
It's only your shadow
Nobody else
It's only your shadow
Arriving too late
And leaving too soon
Oooh.
It's only your shadow.

The Shadow

The shadow of your threshold is so full
Of meaning, that the stranger knows what home
Is yours, if peace dwell here, or strife, or restless
Unsatisfied ambition. As the tree's
Deep shadow meaneth rest and comfort, or
Is poison, sleep eternal, such the house
That is a home's sweet shadow or a dark
Abode of sin, of lurking lie and danger.
The shadow of your life, that is so small
In bright midday and summer's burning sun,
Begins to lengthen when your evening comes,
And shows the beauty of the tree in outline,
Its graceful forms, its harmony and power;
And never did its beauty strike before,
As now, when lost in thought, you contemplate
The shadow on the lawn. The golden rays
That flood it, make it higher, nobler, and
Its shadow ever greater, till the night
Calls forth the moon, to make it deep and weird
As if unspoken pain had darkened it,
As if the silvery paleness of the moon
Sharpened its features into hardness almost.
Behold the shadow of thy life! Look well if
It be a threshold that reveals the strong
Unbending will, the height of all your aims,
Your passions' darkness, and the harmony
Of all the branches that were put into
Your care! Look at the shadow when your day
Is done, and winter's moon will draw its line
In naked truth, without the flattering leaves
Upon your windingsheet's unruffled snow.

My Foolish Eyes

High up on my ceiling
before I fall asleep
I see a darkened shadow.
I need to count some sheep.

I cannot make the shadow out.
Its shape I can't discern.
I shut my eyes tightly
as restlessly I turn.

I swear that I will keep them shut
but my lids defy the vow.
The shadowy figure appears again
and my vision's blurry now.

One more peek is all it takes
for me to realize
that the shadow's only in my mind,
not my foolish eyes.

Marula tree trunk

Strong winds blow against the Marula tree trunk,
They come with miscellaneous objects,
Light and heavy,
And use them to break the Marula tree trunk,
But nothing happens to the Marula tree trunk,

Light and heavy rains come,
The Marula tree smiles,
For the plentiful rain water will make
It stronger and taller,

Animals come and sleep under and on top
Of the Marula tree,
Lean and rub their itching bodies
Against the Marula tree trunk,
Relieve themselves against it,
But nothing happens to the Marula tree trunk,

The human race use the Marula tree for shade
Against the merciless summer heat of the Limpopo sun,
And eat or make beer with Marula,
But, alas! One vicious human being returned,
And chopped it,
Off goes the faithless Marula tree trunk,
To be scorched by the everlasting home burning fires.

Shadow Me

Shadow me oh my
Dark emotion.
Shadow me all the way!

Shadow me to rock
In cradle heart,
To sway and just to sway!

Shadow me as a
Shady love tree,
In my hot, scorching day!

Shadow me must in,
Middle of night,
Like a gleaming pure ray!

Shadow me, shadow,
My foggy love,
Shadow wild me to tame.

Shadow to follow
My every step,
Shadow me in each poem!
