A Buried Man
A half moon at its highest point.
His first winter at the graveyard; the grey sky falls into
bits of ice: he may envy the lights of the rings of houses.
Strangers now carry parts of his life; nothing stopped, no place
unfilled, affection diluted by absence as
the darkness waters the night.
Buses crawl round the empty streets.
From a distant bar the sound of glasses and laughter,
warmth.

I always love this time
Darkened Roads
walking
the fog playing at my feet
silent
Cold mists of rain
greet me
welcoming me
this is my place
Distant ships approaching
dark grey monoliths
drifting on the black waters
a wonder for human eyes
Sirens sound
I know I am not alone
the peace shattered by a distant cry

November Graveyard
The streets line up before me
Like a November graveyard
All cold, silent and grey
Yet still I feel warm inside
Still I hear a sweet sound
Some may think me mad
To walk through a winters rain
Smiling like I’m half possessed
Smiling like I’ve become detached
From the surroundings about me
They do not see my thoughts
Or hear what I think anyway
Why should I even care
About these inhabitants
Of a grey November graveyard
Winter is laying its cold hand
On every tree and garden
Stripping them bare
Still I smile regardless
Senseless to my surroundings
Perhaps who is to say
Only I know the truth
And the truth suits me

Ennis
Ennis will forever be enshrined in my mind,
A small mark on the map from another place and time.
Memories dimmed by many years as though cut with a knife,
First seventeen years of love and laughter in my life.
In a town bowed down by poverty struggling to survive,
Back lanes of half-door houses waiting someone to arrive.
Narrow winding streets full of friends and farmers’ horses,
Pompous priests dressed in black who always walked on water,
And girls in long green dresses that came down below their knees,
Moving past on bicycles; boys waiting for a breeze,
And cows moving slowly herded down towards the water,
Where their blood will fill the Fergus from the houses of slaughter.
And the Christian Brothers School where Brother Brien taught,
No such thing as freedom especially freedom of thought.
We learned everything in Gaelic in the very ancient script,
Letters from the Book of Kells or some ancient warrior’s crypt.
Where are the guys I knew so well; stole by emigration?
Or shied from skirts that only hurt and joined some congregation.
And now the town is filled with cars and strangers wall to wall,
A noisy rush of foreigners in a one-way traffic crawl.
And people don’t have the time to talk or gossip half the day.
They’re in a hurry, got to scurry, got to make their pay.
And traffic lights with tourist types looking out from buses,
This madness of modern times, I wonder ‘bout the pluses.

Round And Round
Well, the joint was rocking
Going round 'n' round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking
What a crazy sound
Well, they never stopped rocking
'Til the moon went down
Well it sounded so sweet
I had to take me a chance
I rose out of my seat
And had to dance
I started moving my feet
And clapping my hands
Yeah, we kept on rocking
Going round 'n' round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking
What a crazy sound
Well, they never stopped rocking
'Til the moon went down
About twelve o'clock
When the place was packed
The front doors were locked
I said the place was packed
When the police knocked
Those doors flew back
But kept on rocking
Going round 'n' round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking
What a crazy sound
Well, they never stopped rocking
'Til the moon went down
Yeah
About twelve o'clock
Around lock up time
Well, the doors were locked
Said the place was packed
When the police knocked
Those doors flew back
But it kept on rocking
Going round 'n' round
Yeah, reeling and a-rocking
What a crazy sound
Well, they never stopped rocking
'Til the moon went down
Yeah, it kept on rocking
Going round 'n' round

Empty Old Houses
Empty Old Houses
Empty old houses can talk…
But one must know how to listen…
to hear them
Empty old houses have stories…
But one must be eager to listen…
to hear them
Empty old houses can suffer..
But one must have empathy …
To feel it
Empty old houses can feel pain
But one must be able to bear it …
To feel it
Empty old houses have memories
But one must believe … that they have…
To share them
Empty old houses contain people’s lives
But one must believe…that they do…
To share them
Empty old houses can seem dead and deserted
But one must know that they’re not..
To know them
Empty old houses can teem with life’s pleasures
But one must walk through
to sense the aura of life
Empty old houses abound in life’s treasures
But one cannot help but…
To admire them

Homelessness In Winter
back about 30 years ago,
living on the streets in Charlotte...
finally found a job... was lucky enough
to have a place to take a shower...
sleeping in the backseat of a broke
down Ford Maverick... cold winter...
got up and walked 4 miles to work
every morning,4 miles 'home' in the
evening...
went on for a couple months before
i got a place to live...
so yes i know what homelessness
feels like...and i cant help thinking
about all the empty foreclosed houses....
empty houses, homeless people....
back then, even if you couldnt find a
real job, they had a place where you
could go and line up to do day work...
worked all day for about 25 dollars...
if you couldnt do that, you could always
sell blood.... i dont know what they do
now....i just know it's a hard life...and if
you've got family, got kids...
something to think about the next time
you see a homeless person walking the
streets!

Have Mercy!
Have Mercy!
with final thoughts
i walk these streets,
past vacant buildings hallowed.
in silent mourning,
my heartbeat joining,
the concrete scarred by living.
passing strangers hurrying,
as if they had a life to return to.
while the shouts and cursing of working men,
rings inside the empty walls!
past tenemant buildings,
and unemployed stoops,
and eyes staring from windows.
dogs too hungry to bark,
squad cars passing slow,
tis the funeral of poverty.
while meth lab food stamp children,
sharpen knives against the curb.
and everything's grey, even the sounds,
the air is drunk with anger.
i caught a ride
with a trucker wired,
who mumbled slamming gears.
out into the country
once green and rich...
now brown and deserted.
fields not worked,
farm's foreclosed,
houses left to ghosts and memories.
tractors rusting in the sun,
the air is drunk with anger.
back into town,
past libraries closed,
and churches that ache with empty.
i can hear the sound
of the distant bells...
be it freedom or infinity.
past hospitals full,
and graveyards that move
with shadows in the night.
back to the small room
where i cant sleep...
where god weeps in the stillness.
America, America...
the air is drunk with anger!

Easton's Beach
LAST night I saw a city by the sea,
Outlined in sparks of fire;
Those wreathed lamps made all a fantasy -
Arch, dome and spire.
I saw above the waters pale and gray,
The pale moon stand,
I heard, but faint and sweet and far away,
A martial band.
The distant voices in the streets, the sound
Of laughter from the towers
Made where we swam the solitude profound:
The sea was ours.

The Downtown Lights
Sometimes I walk away
When all I really wanna do
Is love and hold you right
There is just one thing I can say
It's all right, can't you see
The downtown lights
In love we're all the same
We're walking down an empty street
And with nobody callin' your name
Empty streets, empty nights
The downtown lights
*How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know you feel it
How do I know it's true
Can't you see
Nobody loves you this way
It's all right
Tonight and every night
Let's go walking down the city streets
Let's walk in the cool evening light
Wrong or right, the endless sight
The downtown lights
It will be all right
It will be all right
The downtown lights
Yeah, yeah, yeah
(*Repeat)
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Downtown lights
The neons and the cigarettes
The rented rooms and rented cars
The crowded streets, the empty bars
Chimneytops, trumpets
The golden lights, the loving prayers
Colored shoes, the empty trains
I'm tired of cryin' on the stairs
Downtown lights
It'll be all right
It'll be all right

Darkness Falls
A blackbird utters its warning call,
As, slowly, darkness begins to fall.
The temperature grows steadily colder,
As the day grows steadily older.
In the houses, lights are being put on,
Now that daylight has almost gone.
Shift workers head out into the night,
While most of us are snuggled up tight.
People head to town for an evening out:
Laughter is heard, as is the odd distant shout.
Cats come out to search and stalk their prey:
Woe betide the creature who steps in their way.
Ducks settle down: Head under their wing.
Small birds have roosted and no longer sing.
Moths flit to and fro around a light.
Bats whizz by silently in their flight.
Small children are being put to bed,
Laying down their sleepy heads.
People settle down to watch the TV,
Hoping that there's something good to see.
The moon shines way up high.
The stars twinkle away in the velvet sky.
Owls come out for their nightly feed,
Hoping to satisfy their hunger needs.
Livestock is rounded up and locked away,
In an attempt to keep the sly foxes at bay.
Spiders come out and crawl about,
Freaking the arachnophobics out.
For hours on end, our world is dark,
Till, by the dawn chorus, first light is marked.
Dawn slowly gives way to daybreak,
And those, who have been sleeping, awake.
While those who have been put to task,
Can head home to their beds at last.
The routine of a brand new day calls,
Until, once again, darkness falls.

The Sound of Your Laughter
The sound of your laughter
Is what pulls me through
The harshest winter
The sound of your laughter
Makes every bright summer day
Brighter
The sound of your laughter
Is what gets me up in the morning
With it
I can take anything life can bring
Not to make too much out of it
But to me
Everyday Is a good day To live
To The sound of your laughter
Around And Around
They say the joint was rockin'
a goin' 'round and round
Yeah reelin' and a rockin'
What a crazy sound
But you never stopped rockin'
Till the moon went down
Though it sounds so sweet
I hadda take me a chance
I rose out of my seat
I just had to dance
Started movin' my feet
Yeah clappin' my hands, Alright
But you kept on rockin'
Going 'Round and around
Yeah reelin' and a rockin'
What a crazy sound
But you never stopped rockin'
Till the moon went down
I said Twelve o'clock
I say the place as packed

Both doors flew back

Rings Around The Moon
Rings around the moon
(written by b. r. & m. gibb)
If youre lonely in the black of night
If you call me, Ill be there
I was falling and you helped me get it right
And I thank you girl, and I thank you
And I pray for the sign
And I wont be too late
If you just come down
I can look you in the eye
I can tell you that I love you
And my love will never die
And its time that you know
Just how far I mean to go
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
Come tomorrow, candle burns
And I wake up by your side
All my sorrow, you made it disappear
And I thank you, and I thank you
And I lay down my life
And I wont be alone
If you just take time
And be sure of who you are
We can take it up to heaven
We can walk amongst the stars
And I know if you stay
I will never turn away
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
And I pray for the sign
And I wont be too late
If you just take time
And be sure of who you are
We can take it up to heaven
We can walk amongst the stars
And I know if you stay
I will never turn away
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon
We fly rings around the moon

This winter
The air is grey
and the cold bites with the rain
and this morning, there’s fog folding around me
I am goalless and empty without you
and I do not know what your words mean,
but you have no place for me and my life is grey.
The sadness falls
like a cloak over me,
while goallessness folds around me.
My cheeks are wet and there are drops that stick to it
and its not rain and it is wet from weeping
and I do not know where to find light in the greyness.
Everything is dark and I wonder what my future holds
and your heart is made of rock,
while pain and blackness falls around me.
I am searching for a heaven that hangs sapphire blue
in the future over our lives and like the Lords blessings,
comes right through the darkness and meaningless grey
and fold open like a new morning.

The Great Grey Water
Now two have met, now two have met,
Who may not meet again—
Two grains of sand, two blades of grass,
Two threads within the skein—
Beside the Great Grey Water.
Two hands to touch, two hearts to touch;
And, here forgathered, we
Will not forget, may not forget,
Where last forgathered three—
Beyond the Great Grey Water.
Two glasses filled, two pipes to fill—
‘To all our fortunes, brother!’
And as they clink—like so—we drink
Fair passage to the other
Across the Great Grey Water.
For three have sailed, and one has sailed,
His sins, like ours, still on him,
God sleep his soul! five oceans roll
Their long weight all upon him.
O God! thy Great Grey Water!
But I am still, and you are still,
And here our chance has flung us;
True comrades we, but…there were three
And one is not among us
Beside the Great Grey Water.
A breathing space, a biding place,
Soft lights and beakers beaded,
Then out again and on again,
Unminded and unheeded,
Across the Great Grey Water.
Now two have met where three have met
With curses or with laughter;
And so our Day shall pass away,
And so our Night come after—
But, ah! the Great Grey Water
