Shi'Ann

Man...
I love my greatniece.
One of three sisters,
Born in the middle.
And can be sometimes sweet...
Bossy AND opinionated.
Like her mom and dad,
Grandparents...
T'ana and Allahna too.
We wont include Aunt Shayla...
She of course turns it on at will!
When things are not going the way
As Ms Shay says they should,
She gives us all eyes that can kill!
But my Shi'Ann,
Is the one that fits the bill!
You once asked me one day...
'Uncle Larry, write about me,
And what will you say? '
I will say my greatniece ShiAnn is grand.
She's terrific with a heart of gold!
And what Shi'Ann does...
Will be in the way,
Only Shi'Ann can...
Making sure others obey!

Dedicated:
To my greatniece Shi'Ann Pertillar

Thirty-one years old...
Wow how time has passed.
With looks of a teen-ager!
'Now Shayla...
You and I know that ain't gon' last! '
But you have a timeless beauty,
And what's greater is your heart that's pure.
You have Kamara and Kevin...
Two wonderful children you raise.
They reflect your terrificness,
And you deserve the praise.
I wont mention your cooking...
Because someone else might be reading this,
And looking!
But I will say this...
I've heard you cook a mean pot of grits!
You know Uncle Larry likes to tease...
Especially you, my beautiful niece!
And when all is said and done...
I want the world to know,
How magnificent you have become!
I am so proud of you, 'Ms Shay'

Allanah Rae

My dear Allanah,
Great niece I love.
Forgive Uncle Larry,
For not knowing how to spell your name,
Right!
Well...
Most of your life.
Your parents are too creative!

And this poem tonight I write for you,
I'm hoping you and I remain close and tight!
Aiight?
Give me five!
Upside.
Down low.
Too slow!
Hahahaha...

Remember you had said to me,
'Wassup with this?
You can't write me a poem? '

Allanah,
I thought I did?

One day you too will grow older.
And hopefully me you will forgive.

Hmmm...
So what shall I say?
I always say you are great.
And that is true.
Although you get a little bored with school.
So did I.
Uncle Larry did too.
I loved math.
Even though I didn't understand it.
Until I earned a dollar!
Hollah...

Did you enjoy your trip to Florida?
I heard you had cried before boarding the plane.
That's strange.

My first trip I sipped on scotch,
Mixed with ginger ale.
I'm glad you are young.
So you can not do the same.
You will prevail as things change.

Tell your sisters T'Ana and Chi'Ann,
I am 'still' their biggest fan!
Since you know how nosy they are.

But 'you' Allanah 'is' my Star.
Or is that 'are'?

I love the way you dance and sing.
But whatever you choose to do,
I know you'll go far!
Like me you enjoy doing most everything.
Hey...
Why not become a psychiatrist?
And,
I'm not trying to say nothing else about it!

So here it is.
The poem I promised I would write.
And everyday I want you to say your prayers at night.

Remember your wishes and dreams can come true.
And also remember,
Uncle Larry loves you!
You are my 'Rae'.

My Uncle Gay

I can not say in a way,
That would for anyone be understood.
But I have an uncle named Gayhall,
Who stands for me very tall.

A minister he is,
With a wife Pamela and two adorable kids.
Well...
They are no longer 'kids'.
Two beautiful women I 'should' say.
Nicole and Tiffany...
Each with a uniqueness,
Anyone can see.

Although my Uncle Gay,
Has been sick of late.
I hate the fact that he's like that.
But what can I do,
Besides pray from my Uncle Gay?

I 'see' him getting better,
Each day as I 'visualize'.
I want his health to return to him.
Because he is very special,
In my eyes.

I love my aunts and uncles...
As 'if' they were mine!
And...
Hey,
They are 'mine'!
Well...
Let me define what it is I want God to do!

'God,
I know for a fact...
You are with me all the time!
But...
Will You heal my Uncle Gay?
Right 'now'!
And...
Today! '

To The Greats

To my great nephew.
And wonderful great nieces.
You all are tremendous.
I love you to pieces.

Kevin Lawrence,
I already see in you...
Your stubbornness.
And unchanging attitude.
Oh, I see me in you I do.
God bless your mother Shayla.
And your daddy Kevin too.
Along with your sister Kamara...
Accomplishments you will pursue.

T'Ana, Allanah and Shi'An...
Three strong willed women,
Who take control and command.
Your parents Rhonda and Landry...
Have been mesmerized by your skills.
Your graciousness and talents,
Captivate and thrill.

And as your great uncle,
I just want you to know...
So proud I am of all of you,
As I observe you blooming to grow.
Evolving into adults you are.
With love and wisdom you bestow.
Never let that go!

Moments of Their Mourning

The biggest honor you can bestow,
On someone deceased.
Is to participate,
If asked to speak...
During their homegoing service.

You may not believe,
You have this skill or ability!
But someone saw it in you.
That's why you were approached...
To deliver inspiration.
Only in the way that you can do.

Bringing somewhat of a closure,
To those in heartbreak exposing grief.
Your words will lift them up and away...
And relieve them from their agony.

With an effectiveness,
That can and will assist...
To bring them in memory,
Of those happy times that existed.
And it was felt,
That only you would be able to do this...
To ease them during this period,
In which loved ones are certain to mourn.

And you need to be there...
Aware and sharing,
In moments of their mourning.

Dedicated to...
My sister Andrea (Mimmie) D. Pertillar Dixon.

These words were spoken to her daughter Shayla,
My niece.
Who felt she could not speak,
During a funeral in 'celebrating' the life...
And not the death of a close friend.

'Mimmie? What can I say?
I 'had' to lift this conversation.
I hope you realize how great your comments made
to Shayla, inspired me as well.
I may be biased!
However...
You are one terrific person.
I may be one of the writers in the family.
But...
You sure know how to deliver the right words.
And at the right time and place.'

Love you,
Larry

Why You So Dramatic?

You could have said goodbye.
But 'no'!
You wanted me to suffer.
You wanted to drag my heart,
Across the hot flaming coals.
You wanted to see me in grief...
With no relief in sight!
You wanted to hear me wimper like a puppy.
Until my tail felt the ground,
To drag on and around all day long.
I know what you're up to.
But that's not going to work this time.
I've been hardened!
I didn't look for you at all.
Even in the height of my sorrow!
In an emptiness...
That seemed to have lingered on forever!

'Uncle Larry...
We just come back from the store.
You were sleeping.
We didn't want to wake you!
Geessshhh!
Why you so dramatic? '

It is a skill,
You all have helped me sharpened!
Go if you must.
But know this...
God comforts me in your absence!

'We've already been.'

Then why are you up in my face?
I know you all have better things to do?
Don't start with your annoying abilities.
I too have gifts you have never seen.

As My Uncle Used To Say

I've thought a power on men and things,
As my uncle ust to say,--
And ef folks don't work as they pray, i jings!
W'y, they ain't no use to pray!
Ef you want somepin', and jes dead-set
A-pleadin' fer it with both eyes wet,
And _tears_ won't bring it, w'y, you try _sweat_,
As my uncle ust to say.

They's some don't know their A, B, Cs,
As my uncle ust to say,
And yit don't waste no candle-grease,
Ner whistle their lives away!
But ef they can't write no book, ner rhyme
No ringin' song fer to last all time,
They can blaze the way fer the march sublime,
As my uncle ust to say.

Whoever's Foreman of all things here,
As my uncle ust to say,
He knows each job 'at we 're best fit fer,
And our round-up, night and day:
And a-sizin' _His_ work, east and west,
And north and south, and worst and best
I ain't got nothin' to suggest,
As my uncle ust to say.

On The P.A. System

My child...
Listen and do not fear.
Silent should be your mind.
With a gentleness.
You know...
Who I am.
So there will be no need,
For introductions.

Keep your eyes on 'Me',
Young lady.
For the rest of your wonderful life.
And in the doing...
Your every wish ever dreamed,
I will grant and fulfill.
Providing you utmost happiness.

NO!
You must NOT turn around.
You will break the spell.
Maintain your composure.
This...
Should be taken very seriously.

And,
My child of tremendous beauty...
With skirt too short and much too tight.
Never again,
Will you stay wanting...
For any human need.
I...
Will personally see to it!
Can I hear you rejoice in saying loudly...
Amen!

'Uncle Larry?
Will you stop fooling around.
I recognize your voice.
And I know that is you on the P.A. System.
OKAY? '

I was just testing it.
Weren't you just a 'wee' bit curious?

'Not at all.
I could smell your cologne 10 minutes,
BEFORE you started testing.
And please, Uncle Larry...
Do not do that when my guests arrive.
I want everyone to have a good time,
At my party.'

Excuse me?
And what is 'that' suppose to mean?
I know you did 'not' go there with me,
Young lady? !

Happy Birthday Daddy Larry

86 years old,
Today my Daddy Larry...
Would have celebrated on this day.

He and I had a unique relationship.
We weren't particularly close.
And yet,
A closeness existed.

He and I were so much alike.
But he never did scold me,
Since my mother Edna did that...
To keep my steps on a path walking right.

When I was young,
My daddy was called Lawrence.
I was then Larry junior...
With my own presence known.

Then when I became of age,
He wanted to be called 'Larry'.
And I thought, 'How could he do this to me?
Moving in to claim 'my' territory.

I became Lawrence 'S'...
Back in 1971.
And when I discovered on his birth certificate,
He was Lawrence 'A'?
I had not known that up until that day.

And AS I grew...
Knowing my daddy would soon pass away?
I told him I loved him.
And he looked at me as if to say,
'I wish I had more time! '

That was back in 1988,
Days before my Daddy Larry...
Would from us pass away.

And on this day, December 11th 2010...
I miss my daddy very much.
With a more understanding of him,
And who he was.
Feeling his presence is near.
And we are closer now than ever.
Just because...
That is the way it is!

Happy Birthday, Daddy Larry!

Dedicated to the memory:
Lawrence Pertillar, Senior...
My father.

Queen of What Is Right

Yes!
She is my sister.
And Queen,
Of What Is Right.

No one,
Not even me...
Can argue with Mimmie D.
She is seldom wrong!
So prepare to take a hike.

She's quite talented and gifted.
And seems to never rest.
She makes things look too easy.
Even her children, Shayla and Landry...
Often find time with her protest.
But Mimmie is quite a special person!
And yes, I can say this...
It is true,
She knows what is best.

She knows how to dress with style and grace.
When she cooks a meal,
I've witness people stuff their faces.
Everything she touches,
Has a quality to it.
And she's the first on the scene,
When family, friends and those she loves get sick!

Did I tell you she was a nurse?
When she was just a child...
Healing the 'universe' she use to rehearse.
She tried to practice her skills on me!
But I had to remind her...
I was the one born first!

'Mahhhh...
Will you tell Mimmie to leave me alone.
She's trying to tell me what to say.
When I get on the telephone! '

Yes!
She is my sister.
And Queen,
Of What Is Right.

Yes, we had our arguments.
And yes we had our childish fights.

But on September 10th two thousand and nine,
My little sister will be sixty.
And it is hard to believe,
Without me...
She has done quite fine.

But sometimes I wonder about her husband AL.
After thirty six years of wedded bliss with sister Mim...
He seems to get better as he ages with her.
And not showing one sign,
He is out of his mind!
There has to be 'something' WRONG with THEM.

Two peas in the same pod.
The love they have for each other,
Today...
IS quite odd!

Yes!
She is my sister.
And Queen,
Of What Is Right.

And I love her dearly with all my heart!
Since Andrea and me,
Are both alike.

'Mahhhh...
will you tell LArry to leave me alone.
And mine his own business,
When I talk on the telephone! '

Dedicated to my sister,
Andrea 'Mimmie' Doreen Pertillar Dixon.

The Ballad of Uncle Mukungu

He's my uncle and to my father a brother,
To many a darling or to all and sundry rather;
A pot of knowledge unique, and of humor and quit,
And queer a sight, a wonder as right.

This mine uncle as much do I love,
For he be within and near must cause me to laugh;
And you, liking or not whether,
Never can stand my uncle's weather.

I won't tell all- my uncle's long,
A story you would love as of humor strong;
I will do you a bit, and perhaps a bit more,
Of Mukungu's sweet and sometimes some sore.

At class three a dropout my uncle became,
And thus many had it- uncle has lost his aim;
But no! Who harbored thoughts so was but mistaken,
Listen to Mukungu and your ribs will be shaken.

His talk will behind leave no bit of sagacity,
That bit by bit and all kills ambiance of solemnity;
To imbue the air and emotion with humor high and enough,
To bury hate option and hatch of uncle to love.

Uncle is a guru of eating great,
And many a cuisine none he does hate;
And thus he's indefatigable bull of village,
Cuts through others like a sharpest edge.

Perfect artist he is and scientist as well,
He'll sing a song and tell the stars fell;
He has his language and in he's a virtuoso,
Moreover he acts and he's a star so.

Uncle Toad Said

Uncle toad sittin by the old south gate
Waitin them boys they bin stayin out late
Uncle toad thinks theyre way out of line
Maybe they think he is past his prime
Uncle toad said better straighten up right
When uncle toad spoke it was not a pretty sight
Uncle toad lived in the wood out back
Lived in the shade of a utility shack
He looked in at the big brick housr
At the girls as quiet as a mouse
Uncle toad said you had best get it right
When uncle toad spoke it was not a pretty sight
Uncle toad tucked in the compost pile
Out by the back door look at him smile
He said kid stop drinkin that brew
Plan while ya can or the jokes on you
Uncle toad said better straighten up right
When uncle toad spoke it was not a pretty sight
Uncle toad sittin by the swimmin pool
Sits in the sun when the weather turns cool
Sits in the sun when the girls walk by
Maybe they think hes a little bit sly
Uncle toad said you had best get it right
When uncle toad spoke it was not a pretty sight
Uncle toad sittin by the cool mill race
All day long with a grin on his face
He said boys you had better not try
Kissin em girls cause I wont stand by
Uncle toad sittin by the wrought iron fence
Lookin at the moon like it dont make sense
We say toad heres lookin at you
Hopin you get your wish too
Sway to the left, sway to the right
When uncle toad spoke it was not a pretty sight

Holidays with the family

Johnny wants a brand new car
Susie wants to hit the bar
Mindy wants to be a star
Cindy just goes too far
I just flew in from mars
Sit at the table and eat some turkey
My family only likes beef jerky
They really are quite quirky
Aunt Jane, she`s just a pain
Uncle Jack just follows the pack
Jim just hits on Kim
Happy holidays to him
Has anyone seen Tim
He`s in the pool taking a swim
Where`s everyone been?
When the tree still needs to be trimmed
Uncle Jerry just farted downwind
Uncle bill drank all the gin
Fat Jim needs to hit the gym
Family dinner with all the winners
Oh boy can`t wait to finish
Before mom starts a fire
No one can extinguish

Me & My Uncle

Me and my uncle went ridin down,
South colorado, west texas bound.
We stopped over in santa fe,
That bein the point just about half way,
And you know it was the hottest part of the day.
I took the horses up to the stall,
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all.
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein summer, I took off my shirt,
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.
When texas cowboys, theys all around,
With liquor and money, they loaded down.
So soon after payday, know it seemed a shame;
You know my uncle, he starts a friendly game,
High-low jack and the winner take the hand.
My uncle starts winnin; cowboys got sore.
One of them called him, and then two more,
Accused him of cheatin; oh no, it couldnt be.
I know my uncle, hes as honest as me,
And Im as honest as a gamblin man can be.
One of them cowboys, he starts to draw,
And I shot him down, lord he never saw.
Well I grabbed a bottle, cracked him in the jaw,
Shot me another, oh damn he wont grow old.
In the confusion, my uncle grabbed the gold,
And we high-tailed it down to mexico.
I love those cowboys, I love their gold,
I loved my uncle, God rest his soul,
Taught me good, lord, taught me all I know
Taught me so well, I grabbed that gold
And I left his dead ass there by the side of the road.

He was just a workin man,
Simple rules and simple plans,
Fancy words he didnt understand,
He loved with his heart,
He worked with his hands.

Conservatives live in a world gone by,
Socialists preach of a promised land,
But old uncle son, was an ordinary man.
Bless you uncle son,
They wont forget you, when the revolution comes.
Unionists tell you when to strike,

Preachers tell you wrong from right,
Theyll feed you when youre born,
And use you all your life.

Uncle Bill

My Uncle Bill! My Uncle Bill!
How doth my heart with anguish thrill!
For he, our chief, our Robin Hood,
Has gone to jail for stealing wood!
With tears and sobs my voice I raise
To celebrate my uncle's praise;
With all my strength, with all my skill,
I'll sing the song of Uncle Bill."
Convivial to the last degree,
An open-hearted sportsman he.
Did midnight howls our slumbers rob,
We said, "It's uncle 'on the job'."
When sounds of fight rang sharply out,
Then Bill was bound to be about,
The foremost figure in "the scrap",
A terror to the local "trap".
To drink, or fight, or maim, or kill,
Came all alike to Uncle Bill.
And when he faced the music's squeak
At Central Court before the beak,
How carefully we sought our fob
To pay his fine of forty bob!
Recall the happy days of yore
When Uncle Bill went forth to war!
When all the street with strife was filled
And both the traps got nearly killed.
When the lone cabman on the stand
was "stoushed" by Bill's unaided hand,
And William mounted, filled with rum,
And drove the cab to kingdom come.
Remember, too, that famous fray
When the "Black-reds", who hold their sway
O'er Surry Hills and Shepherd's Bush,
Descended on the "Liver Push".
Who cheered both parties long and loud?
Who heaved blue metal at the crowd!
And sooled his bulldog, Fighting Bet,
To bite, haphazard, all she met?
And when the mob were lodged in gaol
Who telegraphed to me for bail?
And -- here I think he showed his sense --
Who calmly turned Queen's evidence?"

Enough! I now must end my song,
My needless anguish, why prolong?
From what I've said, you'll own, I'm sure,
That Uncle Bill was pretty "pure",
So, rowdies all, your glasses fill,
And -- drink it standing -- "Uncle Bill"."

Landry Is My Nephew

Landry is my first nephew!
So proud I am...
That he has become a great man.
I am familiar with his easy smile.
And I observe him as he disciplines...
Each of his growing six children!
SIX?
That he now has six transfixes me sometimes!
Like a piecing jolt of reality,
Playing tricks on my mind.

Time has passed so fast...
As I think of the responsibility,
And Landry's current tasks!
So many he juggles...
As a 'master' with class!

I tell him all the time,
I am so proud of him!
And when I hear him speak of his children,
I say to myself...
'That's the man I wish I had been! '

He doesn't walk on water...
Like I think 'he' thinks he oughta!
I see a lot of me...
His dad and my sister Mim too I 'see'.
And I can say with much pride...
I am so happy Landry is MY nephew!
As I cherish these thoughts each day inside!
Knowing and loving him as I do.

Here they come again hop scotching up to my door
One by one again knockety knock knocking upon my floor
Swinging on my gate they gain entry by the yard
Pulling at my hair they scream paint your thoughts upon my card
But not tonight Ive got studies to examine
Tomorrow Ill be watching all the queens men
A talent contest on monday with my uncle sam
Who now takes up all of my time he gives me things to do
cause hes a wonderful man
But Im sailing across the sea to see my uncle sam
Im sailing across the sea to be with my uncle sam
To be with my uncle sam
Silly little sniggers from the women liberators
But Ill stand and hold my post
Polished buttons and erect Ill raise the flag
Ill show those women whos the most
But not tonight Ive got studies to examine
