Long Before I Had Joined The Military
It was nearing the end of boot camp.
Eight weeks of basic training was nearing an end,
And my training instructor called me out of the ranks...
To say this to me,
'Horse'...a nickname he had given to me.
His name was Sargeant Russell.
Sgt Russell said to me,
'Horse, every time I've asked you to do ten laps,
You would do one more.
When I ask you to do thirty push ups,
You do thirty five.
And when your bunk is perfectly made,
After I've bounced a quarter on it...
To then rip the bed apart to shout, 'Do-it-again'
You do...
As if nothing at all is bothering you.
You want me to take you for granted!
Don't you?
You want me to believe you are a fool.
I am wise to you.
Now shut up and file your ass back in line! '
Oh...
I had not said one word.
The guys listening had expected me to.
I was all of eighteen then.
And the only thing that was on my mind,
Was to pass basic training.
Those who didn't...
Went A.W.O.L....away without leave.
I wasn't about to go anywhere.
And to this day,
I think about those comments made,
By Sgt Russell.
'You want me to take you for granted.
You want me to think you are a fool,
Don't you? '
And I thought as I still do...
He knew me too well.
He knew if he demanded I'd wear stilettos shoes,
Adorned with a red dress and a blond wig...
I would still be a better man than he thought I was.
You see...
My mama was my very first drill instructor.
Sgt Russell hadn't had the opportunity to meet her,
To know how prepared I was...
Long before I joined the military.
And I was proud to be a 'mama's boy'.

Raised to be Totally Independent
I knew my mother very well.
In fact...
We were related.
By birth.
Somehow folks that knew us both,
Either did not know that or accept
My mother and I knew each other before
Many of them did.
Many people would come to me,
To say what kind of person she was.
As if I was a visitor...
That showed up on the holidays.
I am the result of my mother's teachings.
And I hope I've done her lessons well.
In fact...
When I had been just a kid at 18,
And had enlisted in the military.
My training instructors were amazed
That I was so disciplined.
I already knew how to iron, sew, cook and clean.
Many of those things some guys struggled,
Through.
As they endured basic training.
People without military training aren't aware...
If mama wasn't there,
Uncle Sam ensured those things got done!
Or no guy would survive on just learning how to clean a gun.
My mama didn't pack no gun.
But she knew what was best for her son!
And to a large degree...
My mama prepared me to confront the enemy.
My ex-wives!
And I say that kind of jokingly.
But I was raised to be totally independent,
Since I can remember.

To Become A Soldier (Didactic)
To be a soldier
get your country to call you up
to a place where you listen and shut-up
to defend those whom you hold dear
or join the military at your own choice
and in basic training (boot camp)
listen to the instructor’s voice
even if he looks wicked like a devil or a tramp
follow instructions to the letter
do everything physical
and drill and drill
while you hope that things will become better,
as they probably never will
while they train you day and night
and especially teach you how to kill
while staying out of the enemy’s sight,
on instruction run from tree to tree,
in full battle dress
and keep going when others are in distress
even if you have got to wee-wee.
If you are up to it, join a special commando unit
or the parachute brigade
while you show them of what you are made
and then really enjoy it.
Wait until they sent you off to war
while you are a different person than you had been before:
a specialist in creating havoc,
in destruction and bloody gore.

Addressed With Assessment
I love it when I am addressed with assessment.
And when it begins...
The feeling I get from it is undescriable.
Those who assess others,
With a scanning from head to toe done...
Have already quietly stated,
'I...
Am better than you.'
Sssssssoooh!
And I,
Somehow...
Get a rush from that!
My training instructor in the military said to me once,
'Horse,
He called me 'horse'.
I thought you were a joke when I first laid my eyes on you.
I've been checking you out.'
He had no idea I had been use to those kinds of looks.
Most of my life,
And I was all of eighteen years old...
Then!
And since then...
Well,
I do allow others to have their delusions.
Hey...
Why should I stop someone from doing something,
I like?
I know it's selfish!

We all laughed. It was more like that whole thing that I was talking about earlier. You go to training camp and after the season is over, you might not see the guys for six months until you go back to training camp.

Sweet Mama
I was raised on the west side shanty town.
I didn't get up till the sun went down.
When your back's against the wall, you better get tough,
An' learn real quick how to swing an' duck.'
I was born in the suite all for the sunshine,
Good lookin' women, back woods an' moonshine.
Learned more about life on the streets than in the school.
Sweet Mama didn't raise no fool,.
That's right.
Some folks cheat 'n some folks lie,
But I can judge a man by the look in his eye.
Don't hand me jack, try to call it cool.
I know the difference 'tween sh*t an' shiner.
I was born in the suite all for the sunshine,
Good lookin' women, back woods an' moonshine.
Learned more about life on the streets than in the school.
Sweet Mama didn't raise no fool.
Instrumental Break.
Talkin' about Mama,
Oh sweet Mama.
Mama was no angel, but she taught me right from wrong.
She knew ev'ry single word, an' ev'ry note, and ev'ry song.
She taught me how to gamble and how to roll a dice.
"If it makes you feel good, do a darn thing twice."
I was born in the suite all for the sunshine,
Good lookin' women, back woods an' moonshine.
Learned more about life on the streets than in the school.
My sweet Mama didn't raise no fool.
I was born in the suite all for the sunshine,
Good lookin' women, back woods an' moonshine.
Learned more about life on the streets than in the school.
My sweet Mama didn't raise no fool.
Yeeow!
Talkin' about:
(My sweet Mama,)
(Mama didn't raise no fool.)
Na, na, na.
(Talkin' about my sweet Mama,
(Mama didn't raise no fool.)
That's my sweet Mama.
(Talkin' about my sweet Mama,
(Mama didn't raise no fool.)
Oh, sweet Mama.

Travelin' Man
The man i loved ran a salesman route
Selling goods from house to house
Now i knew my mama would never stand
For me stepping out with no traveling man
Mama bought things that he was a'selling
But mama didn't know and i sure wasn't telling
That behind her back i was making plans
To meet somewhere with that traveling man
Oh the traveling man was a good bit older
But a girl needs arms to hold her
Mama didn't know 'cause i didn't told her
But mama wouldn't understand
Me stepping out with a traveling man
Mama didn't allow me a'going courting
And i'd tell lies that i reckon i oughtn't
Oh but she'd a'give me the back a' her hand
If she'd a'seen me with that traveling man
So i tell my mama that i reckon i oughta
Go to the spring and fetch us some water
What mama didn't know is i had a plan
To meet down there with that traveling man
Now i make plans to run away
With that traveling man on a saturday
Well saturday's here and here i stand
And there goes my mama with that traveling man
Oh that traveling man was a two-time lover
He took my love then he took my mother
But i didn't know 'cause mama didn't told me and i don't understand
My mama running off with my traveling man
Mama, you know you oughtn't a'done that
You just like my daddy
He run off before i ever knowed him
You done run-off with my traveling man
And i really don't think i ever knowed you either
Oh there goes my mama with my traveling man
And i'm really gonna miss that traveling man
Mm-hm

Mama Didn't Raise No Fool
The best of times, the worst of times,
the times you can't ignore.
Sometimes you bite the bullet
and flip flop on the floor.
They tell you where to go,
and they tell you what to do.
They set your face on fire
then stomp it out with their shoes.
I ain't no fool.
Mama didn't raise no fool.
The times I can't complain
are the times I do the most.
On a diet of black coffee
and prozac buttered toast.
These eunuchs in their prada
and Gucci flavored clothes.
Wouldn't know a fresh perspective
if it bit 'em up on the nose.
I ain't no fool.
Mama didn't raise no fool.
Don't do as they say,
just say as they do.
No flavor's quite so bitter
as the taste of one's own shoe.
I ain't no fool.
Mama didn't raise no fool.

The Man Who Made My Mama Cry
(billy lawson/lee ann womack/dale dodson)
All youve ever been
Is a call every now and then
From some old pay phone
After youd hang up
Lord, shed take it rough
And want to be alone
I know you from the picture
Of you and her together
Taken at a fair in 68
Youve gotta lot of nerve to think
You can walk right in and take her place
To me youre just the man who made my mama cry
Someone who broke a lot of promises in his time
All I know about you is how to live without you
And I can see I have your eyes
But all youve ever been
Is the man who made my mama cry
When she took off my training wheels
Held a job and cooked the meals
Where were you?
Dont even start
She did her part
And yours too
Now youre back to play the part
That was missin in my heart
When I was growin up
Well, youre a little late
I dont have the time to waste on catchin up
To me youre just the man who made my mama cry
Someone who broke a lot of promises in his time
All I know about you is how to live without you
And I can see I have your eyes
But all youve ever been
Is the man who made my mama cry
All I know about you is how to live without you
And I can see I have your eyes
But all youve ever been
Is the man who made my mama cry

Mama's Boy
Who held me responsible,
and accountable for my actions?
My mama.
Who made sure I did my chores...
with a buttoned lip and no back talk?
Doing what I did...
and her voice I would not ignore?
My mama.
When I made a face that was out of place,
and mumbled my thoughts...
I just knew she couldn't 'trace'.
Mama would say, 'Do what I say, boy...
and fix that face! '
Mama's boy is a man now.
And every step I take...
Is done without excuses.
Because my mama didn't allow me to fake!
Or look for an easy 'out' to make!
She knew for me there would be few easy breaks.
And taught me what it was to love...
As she surprised me with a wink!
Served with ice cream...
and a slice of my favorite cake!

You're Definitely Not A Martyr
I've been told I'm now in training,
To blow myself to bits,
The first thing is to brainwash me,
So the idea nicely fits.
I asked if I could try it out,
Before I finally go,
They said that wasn't practical,
Why they didn't know.
The problem with my mission is,
A test run's not allowed,
My trainers said, you can't do that,
Or we'll end up in a shroud.
I asked them what their ages were,
They both said, eighty nine,
They claimed they had a right to live,
For me to die was fine.
I've asked them why they're still alive,
If this concept is so fabled,
They said they'd love to do my job,
But they could end up disabled.
I said you're being ridiculous,
You are telling blatant lies,
They said no, when it's time to go,
We live, it's you who dies.
That's why we are tutors,
To train you for your death,
While you're out dying,
We're still inhaling breath.
They've told me not to worry though,
The bombs within my vest,
Won't give me any problems,
I'll die with all the rest.
I asked them what will happen,
If my bomb then fails to blow,
They said I'd need to run like hell,
Extremely fast, not slow.
I don't believe a word they say,
I've never craved for glory,
As for being blown to bits,
Well that's another story.
What about our leaders,
Who advocate this farce,
While we're out dying,
They're sitting on their arse.
They are not allowed to die,
I asked who made this rule,
They said we will not tell a lie,
To do it you must be a fool.
I've never met the people,
That I'm supposed to kill,
Why would I even contemplate,
Doing this against my will.
I'm thinking now this suicide,
Is not what they portrayed,
As my time draws nearer,
I'm becoming more afraid.
Would someone be there to help me?
Or would I be left alone,
They said that if I messed it up,
Sorry, but you're on your own.
They claim I'll go to Heaven,
For carrying out my task,
I asked them how they knew that,
They said I shouldn't ask.
My readings of the Bible,
Say clearly this is wrong,
All Gods say, ''You Must Not Kill'',
All life we must prolong.
I've now come to a decision,
My training is forsaken,
Those innocent people will now live,
Their lives will not be taken.
Most of us have seen the light,
There's no one left to train,
Now They use the handicapped,
They are really that insane.
The only thing that's guaranteed,
When you sound your own deaths knell,
Is for you there'll be no Heaven,
You are heading straight for hell.
If you think you'll die in glory,
Then you need to be much smarter,
You are nothing more than murdering scum,
‘'You're Definitely Not A Martyr''.
Glittering Girl
She wasn't a fool, that glittering girl
She followed the rules, that shimmering pearl
Said the rules Mama preaches
Go down when they break
The things Mama teaches
You just gotta shake
But she wasn't a fool, that slender love figure
She followed her rule and made money bigger
She wasn't a fool, that shining young woman
She followed her rule, she's crying for no man
Said the rules Mama teaches
Go down when they're broken
She explodes into peaches
And cries when I've spoken
She wasn't a fool, that goddess of hell
There are no mother's rules, she makes them herself
If I was down upon my knees
To beg her, surrender up to me
Something inside her
Told her she shouldn't
Tried and alight her
But the girl wouldn't
She wasn't a fool but love flowed from her face
She's not scared of me, she's afraid of disgrace
She wasn't a fool that female for our world
She followed her rules, that glittering girl
That glittering girl
That glittering girl
That glittering girl

The Little Red Schoolhouse
The little red schoolhouse
was just down the road.
The dress she was wearin'
her mama sewed.
She'd watched her mama make it
with needle and thread.
Her mama was smilin'
from the words she had read.
Mama loved to hear her
read all the words she knew.
'Cause mama couldn't read them,
except for a few.
She said there was no schoolhouse
when she was young.
And most of the words she learned
were from songs that had been sung.
The little red schoolhouse
had only one room.
But every time she'd been in it
she was like a flower in bloom.
She knew she'd make her mama
very proud some day
for that little red schoolhouse
would show her the way.
She remembers that school bell
ringin' in the morn
and mama sayin' 'Rise up girl,
a new day has been born.'
She smiled now thinkin' back
and some tears it now brought,
not for the little red schoolhouse
but for what her mama had taught.

In conclusion, there is a marvelous anecdote from the occasion of Russell's ninetieth birthday that best serves to summarize his attitude toward God and religion. A London lady sat next to him at this party, and over the soup she suggested to him that he was not only the world's most famous atheist but, by this time, very probably the world's oldest atheist. 'What will you do, Bertie, if it turns out you're wrong' she asked. 'I mean, what if--uh--when the time comes, you should meet Him What will you say' Russell was delighted with the question. His birght, birdlike eyes grew even brighter as he contempalated this possible future dialogue, and then he pointed a finger upward and cried, 'Why, I should say, 'God, you gave us insufficient evidence.' '
