Cock-Crow

THE cock's far cry
From lonely yards
Burdens the night
With boastful birds
That mop their wings
To make response—
A mess of songs
And broken sense.
So, when I slept,
I heard your call
(If lips long dead
Could answer still)
And snapped-off thoughts
Broke into clamour,
Like the night's throats
Heard by a dreamer.

We Can Make The Morning

(words & music by j. ramsey)
I just thought I heard a small voice crying
Looked again and saw that it was me
I feel like a little boy denying
That he fears the night cause he cant see
Then a larger thought said stop your crying
Dont be scared to search cause you may find
Fate holds out a candle for your footsteps
Time rolls back the shadows of your mind
Its a long, long lonely night
You can make the morning if you try
Its a long, long lonely night
Oh, we can make the morning if we try
Girl, we can make the morning you and i
Together, together, together
Loneliness is darkness first companion
Spend the night alone and faith may bend
Share it all and see how fear starts fading
Chase away the shadows with a friend
Dawns elusive light is just beginning
Now the day can push away the night
Dreams can make the sun feel much brighter
Hope creates a foothold for the light
Its a long, long lonely night
We can make the morning if we try
Its a long, long lonely night
We can make the morning if we try
Girl, we can make the morning you and i, oh
Together
Its a long, long lonely night
We can make the morning if we try
Its a long, long lonely night
We can make the morning if we try
Its a long, long lonely night
We can make the morning if we try

Vain Death

ALL the first night she might not weep
But watched till morning came,
And when she slept at dawn, she heard
The dead man call her name.

The second night she watched and wept
And called on death for grace,
And when she slept before the dawn
She saw the dead man’s face.

The third night through she laughed as one
That knows her way to bliss,
And in the instant ere she slept
She felt the dead man’s kiss.

She rose and faced the flickering fire
(And oh, but she was fair!),
Like a wild witch behind her danced
The shadow of her hair.

She took her penknife from its sheath,
The tender blade she kissed,
And by the firelight’s dying leap
She bared her little wrist.

And where the vein ran large and blue
She cut, once and again,
Yet ere she swooned from life, she knew
Her death had been in vain.

For while life thundered in her ears,
Ere yet her pulse might fail,
Far off across the kindless night
She heard the dead man’s wail,

And knew her doom was one with theirs
That kill the life God gave,
And that she might not leave this earth
Her soul alive to save,
But ay must dwell within that house
As in a living grave,

While he for whom she died might ne’er
Win to her in that place,
But must for ever make his moan
Ranging in agony alone
The trackless void of space

Love, Locked Away

She hid her love for much too long.
She would not let it show.
She walked alone on lonely paths
where colorless flowers grow.

She kept her love inside her heart
where silently it grew.
She roamed alone among tall trees
where silent birds all flew.

And when at night she lie abed
she cried inside her mind.
She slept alone with lonely dreams
where love is left behind.

The flowers were colorful, birds did sing
but they were not seen or heard.
For all of her lonely dreams at night
left her heart unstirred.

Take Me Through The Night

Hope the circle won't be broken,
By the way things have to be.
Cause I don't really think you know
What you do to me.
Well it's kinda like a movie,
That you've seen so many times.
Can't get you outta my mind.
Take me through the night,
The lonely, lonely night.
It's a thing I only live for,
Another chance to make it right.
Take me through the night,
Take me through the lonely, lonely night.
A dream I've always wished for,
Hope it's alright. (Hope it's alright.)
Knowing how your feelings were,
I had to say goodbye.
We had a magic,
That you can't describe.
A dreamer's world we lived in,
Of memories I can't forget.
Let me dream of you tonight.
Take me through the night,
The lonely, lonely night.
It's a thing I only live for,
Another chance to make it right.
Take me through the night,
Take me through the lonely, lonely night.
A dream I've always wished for,
Hope it's alright.
Take me through the night,
The lonely, lonely night.
A dream I've always wished for. . .
Take me through the night.
Hope it's alright.
Gotta take me through the lonely night.

At Currabwee

Every night at Currabwee
Little men with leather hats
Mend the boots of Faery
From the tough wings of the bats.
So my mother told to me,
And she is wise you will agree. .

Louder than a cricket's wing
All night long their hammer's glee
Times the merry songs they sing
Of Ireland glorious and free.
So I heard Joseph Plunkett say,
You know he heard them but last May.

And when the night is very cold
They warm their hands against the light
Of stars that make the waters gold
Where they are labouring all the night.
So Pearse said, and he knew the truth,
Among the stars he spent his youth.

And I, myself, have often heard
Their singing as the stars went by,
For am I not of those who reared
The banner of old Ireland high,
From Dublin town to Turkey's shores,
And where the Vardar loudly roars?

In Memory Of John Butler Yeats

'TO-NIGHT,' you said, 'to-night, all Ireland round
The curlews call.' The dinner-talk went on,
And I knew what you heard and what you saw,
That left you for a little while withdrawn-
The lonely land, the lonely-crying birds!

Your words, your breath is gone!
O uncaught spirit, we'll remember you
By those remote and ever-flying birds
Adown the Shannon's reach, or crying through
The mist between Clew Bay and Dublin Bay!

i Thought I Heard A Man Cry Last Night

'I THOUGHT I HEARD A MAN CRY LAST NIGHT'

I thought I heard him weep
I thought I heard a man cry last night
He woke me from my sleep
I thought I heard a man cry last night
I heard his gentle sob,
I thought I heard a man cry last night
I wondered why he was so sad,
I thought I heard a man cry last night
Or was I going mad,
I thought I heard a man cry last night
I heard his cries subside
I thought I heard a man cry last night
Before I returned gently to my sleep,
I thought I heard a man cry last night
My Pillow doesnt tell me any lies, !

I Heard Her Call My Name

(reed)
Ever since I was on cripples monday,
Ive got my eyeballs on my knees.
I rapped for hours with mad mary williams,
She said she never understood a word from me
Because, I know that she cares about me,
I heard her call my name.
And I know that shes long, dead and gone,
Still it aint the same.
When I wake up in the morning, mama,
I heard her call my name.
I know shes dead and long, gone.
I heard her call my name.
And then I felt my mind split open.
I know that shes long, dead and gone,
Still it aint the same.
When I wake up in the morning, mama,
I heard her call my name.
I know shes dead and long, gone.
Still, I heard her call my name.
And then my mind split open.

Lonely Girl

Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Oh, my lonely girl, lonely girl
Dont you know this lonely boy loves you
Ever since he broke your heart, you seem so lost
Each time you pass my way
How I long to take your hand and say dont cry
Ill kiss your tears away
Hey...lonely girl, my only girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Dont you know this lonely boy loves you
(you think that only his two lips can kiss your lips)
(and make your heart stand still)
But once youre in my arms youll see
No one can kiss your lips the way I will
The way I will
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Let me make your broken heart like new
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl
Dont you know this lonely boy loves you
Dont you know this lonely boy loves you
Ooh...
Hey there lonely girl, lonely girl

Into The Night Of Blue

Into the night of blue, into the night of blue...
Havent heard your voice for a long long time
Still you have me hanging on the line
Still thinking bout you
Havent seen a smile upon my face
And I havent slept a night for days
I go, I go
Into the night of blue
You dont know what Im going through
Life is empty and sad without you
Im living lonely, wheres my baby
Into the night of blue
I dont know what Im gonna do
Life is empty and sad without you
Im living lonely, wheres my baby
In my mind are pictures of the past
Telling me a story meant to last
Still holding onto
Days out on the beach out in the sun
Nights when I was still your only one
Now I go, I go
Into the night of blue
You dont know what Im going through
Life is empty and sad without you
Im living lonely, wheres my baby
Into the night of blue
I dont know what Im gonna do
Life is empty and sad without you
Im living lonely, wheres my baby
Funny how these memories
Only lead me back to you
They lead me back to you
I go, I go...
Into the night of blue...
Havent heard your voice for a long long time
Still you have me hanging on the line
Now I go, I go...
Into the night of blue
You dont know what Im going through
Life is empty and sad without you
Im living lonely, wheres my baby
Into the night of blue

Why the Jackass Laughs

The Boastful Crow and the Laughing Jack
Were telling tales of the outer back:
"I've just been travelling far and wide,
At the back of Bourke and the Queensland side;
There isn't a bird in the bush can go
As far as me," said the old black crow.
"There isn't a bird in the bush can fly
A course as straight or a course as high.
Higher than human eyesight goes.

There's sometimes clouds -- but there's always crows,
Drifting along for a scent of blood
Or a smell of smoke or a sign of flood.
For never a bird or a beast has been
With a sight as strong or a scent as keen.
At fires and floods I'm the first about,
For then the lizards and mice run out:
And I make my swoop -- and that's all they know --
I'm a whale on mice," said the Boastful Crow.

The Bee-birds over the homestead flew
And told each other the long day through
"The cold has come, we must take the track."
"Now, I'll make you a bet," said the Laughing Jack,
"Of a hundred mice, that you dare not go
With the little Bee-birds, by Boastful Crow."

Said the Boastful Crow, "I could take my ease
And fly with little green birds like these.
If they went flat out and they did their best
I could have a smoke and could take a rest."
And he asked of the Bee-birds circling round:
"Now, where do you spike-tails think you're bound?"
"We leave tonight, and out present plan
is to go straight on till we reach Japan.

"Every year, on the self-same day,
We call our children and start away,
Twittering, travelling day and night,
Over the ocean we take our flight;
And we rest a day on some lonely isles
Or we beg a ride for a hundred miles
On a steamer's deck,* and away we go:
We hope you'll come with us, Mister Crow."

But the old black crow was extremely sad.
Said he: "I reckon you're raving mad
To talk of travelling night and day,
And how in the world do you find your way?"
And the Bee-birds answered him, "If you please,
That's one of our own great mysteries".

Now these things chanced in the long ago
And explain the fact, which no doubt you know,
That every jackass high and low
Will always laugh when he sees a crow.

The Dead Do Not Answer

THE DEAD DO NOT ANSWER

The dead do not answer
We call to them in the night
But they do not respond
It is our heart calling to them
Our pain our love our need
But they do not answer
All our memories call to them
All that they have been to us
And we with them
We call and call and call
Again and again and again
But they do not answer
The dead do not answer
And we will not answer either.

A Hope Carol

A night was near, a day was near,
Between a day and night
I heard sweet voices calling clear,
Calling me:
I heard a whirr of wing on wing,
But could not see the sight;
I long to see my birds that sing,
I long to see.
Below the stars, beyond the moon,
Between the night and day
I heard a rising falling tune
Calling me:
I long to see the pipes and strings
Whereon such minstrels play;
I long to see each face that sings,
I long to see.
Today or may be not today,
Tonight or not tonight,
All voices that command or pray
Calling me,
Shall kindle in my soul such fire
And in my eyes such light
That I shall see that heart's desire
I long to see.

I Heard Him Cry

Feel insanity tonight
Lost with one long cry
Try to break the loneliness
No succesful try
Heard that cry a thousand times
Did not see the light
I didnt know him demanding
One last fatal try
Now I understand his lonely cry...
Chorus:
I heard him cry
I heard him cry but I didnt know
I heard him cry, I heard him cry...
Missed to say good bye that night,
Haunted by his cry
I never knew the reason why
I guess I just thought of i
Words were drowned by rain or tears
Didnt know what he said
I try to recall the happy years
These minutes just leave me sad
Now I understand his lonely cry

Under-Song

There is music in the strong
Deep-throated bush,
Whisperings of song
Heard in the leaves' hush -
Ballads of the trees
In tongues unknown -
A reminiscent tone
On minor keys…

Boughs swaying to and fro
Though no winds pass…
Faint odors in the grass
Where no flowers grow,
And flutterings of wings
And faint first notes,
Once babbled on the boughs
Of faded springs.

Is it music from the graves
Of all things fair
Trembling on the staves
Of spacious air -
Fluted by the winds
Songs with no words -
Sonatas from the throats
Of master birds?

One peering through the husk
Of darkness thrown
May hear it in the dusk -
That ancient tone,
Silvery as the light
Of long dead stars
Yet falling through the night
In trembling bars.

Dont Fall In Love With Me

Dont fall in love with me baby
Its a love that just wont last.
Your eyes are lookin out at the future
But you see the past.
You know love was made for a dreamer
But when the dream is out of sight
Well, all youre gonna get in the morning
Is a lonely night
(gonna be a lonely night nothing but a lonely night)
Saving it all for something wild and wonderful
Holding it down
Theres gotta be another horizon
Keep it inside
Dont throw away your precious love
cause if you need to be free you can take it
Not a prison of love that you make it
Dont fall in love with me baby
Its a love that just wont last
Your eyes are looking out at the future
But you see the past
You know hearts are made to be broken
And your love has broken mine
Now all your gonna get in the morning is a lonely night
(gonna be a lonely night
Nothing but a lonely night
Gonna be a lonely night
Youre gonna be blue...
Oo...oo..woo woo...oo
Gonna be a lonely night
Nothing but a lonely night
Gonna be a lonely night)
Saving it all for something wild and wonderful
Holding it down, theres gotta be another horizon
Keep it inside

A Funeral Note

Life on a lonely pillow,
The thoughts of the morrow to sleep at last;
Not a drum was heard at his funeral.
Of a funeral note,
Darkly as the dead of the night;
But its deep heart is full of dead men bones.
Fruits,
Sweet rejoice;
The flowers of that garden say it all.
Of error, ignorance and strife;
Like the barbarians at play,
Where the earth takes the dead away.
Of error, ignorance and strife;
Like a corpse within its grave,
Ready for the earth to swallow it.
Hear and hail,
Wear and wail;
Like the earth's decaying leaves where,
Life's lonely pillow shares the funeral note.
To all the overgrown sons,
To all the overgrown daughters,
With flowers and azure moss;
The impulse of your strength is like,
The Atlantic's level powers at sea.
Uncontrollable!
Like mourners with sad songs;
Their eyes are heavy and dim,
Broken with remorse like that orbed maid;
Where the moving-star shines dead,
And the thoughts of man die easily.

Ships Of The Night

Poems pass
in the night also.
Port starboard lights
burn bright also.

Poems pass stirred
hear wave slap night gongs?
Have you not heard
their salty soft saline songs?

Poems pass plotted
in navigated narrows; of lapping passage night.
Have you not heard
their soft spoken saline songs; by glow of candle light?

Poems pass navigated
in natant night also.
Daily cares contested
at last laid low below.

Poems pass
in shadow seamed night.
Poems pass
in nuptial nocturnal night flight.

Has not herald heard
silver shimmering saline songs?
Poems pass like flight of bird
as eternal endless night sails on.

Heard Somebody Cry

(I thought I heard somebody cry--
I though I heard somebody cry)
I went to see what I could find
Like flowers in the dead of night
Like shadows in the moonlight--
I though I heard somebody cry
A choir with a single voice--a picnic on a cliff
Antenna like an insect--to pick up all your thoughts
Chorus
It isnt true
I am not the ghost
Without a soul . . . come
Listen to my heart
You feel the beat . . . stop
Listen to the sound
Of moving feet . . . walk
Through the halls at night
When Im asleep
I dont believe . . .i dont believe
The shoe is on the other foot--the glove is on the fist
The first is like a cannonball--but it feels like a kiss
I got a bed thats real soft--in a room thats always sad
I thought I heard a window sigh--
I though I heard somebody cry
Chorus
A choir with a single voice--a picnic on a cliff
Antenna like an insect--to pick up all your thoughts
I sip the running water--like rivers from your eyes
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be lost
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be lost
I thought I heard somebody cry--i thought Id go and see
I thought I heard somebody cry--somebody might be me
