Sunday: New Guinea

The bugle sounds the measured call to prayers,
The band starts bravely with a clarion hymn,
From every side, singly, in groups, in pairs,
Each to his kind of service comes to worship Him.

Our faces washed, our hearts in the right place,
We kneel or stand or listen from our tents;
Half-naked natives with their kind of grace
Move down the road with balanced staffs like mendicants.

And over the hill the guns bang like a door
And planes repeat their mission in the heights.
The jungle outmaneuvers creeping war
And crawls within the circle of our sacred rites.

I long for our disheveled Sundays home,
Breakfast, the comics, news of latest crimes,
Talk without reference, and palindromes,
Sleep and the Philharmonic and the ponderous Times.

I long for lounging in the afternoons
Of clean intelligent warmth, my brother’s mind,
Books and thin plates and flowers and shining spoons,
And your love’s presence, snowy, beautiful, and kind.

The Unity is The Disruption

Amazing Grace

In the little town where I am the Preacher
every Sunday we are open
we sing what we call our healing hymn.
It is the last hymn of the service
and before we sing it, I ask everyone
to think of someone who is not well.
Whether they are at home or in hospital.
I ask them to picture in them in their mind
the person whom needs God’s help in some way,
and as they sing it,
think they are singing it to them as well as our Lord.
The hymn we sing is Amazing Grace,
what we call our healing hymn.
We raise our voices high without accompaniment.
If you heard us singing
you would not find a wrong note sung by anyone.
Instead, you would hear a choir of voices
like a heavenly choir.

Alexanders Ragtime Band

Come on and hear (2x), alexanders ragtime band,
Come on and hear (2x), its the best band in the land!
They can play a bugle call like you never heard before,
So natural that you want to go to war--
Thats just the bestest band what am, honey lamb!
Come on along (2x), let me take you by the hand
Up to the man (2x), whos the leader of the band,
And if you want to hear the swanee river played in ragtime
Come on and hear (2x), alexanders ragtime band!

REbel for friend Rema

The cockerel crew at break of day.
Bid working men to make their way
to where they earned their honest crust
when hunger drives a man needs must.

Obey the cockerel’s clarion call.

So harness Dobbin to the plough
and leave behind a straight furrow
or hasten to the factory
amongst the grim machinery.

Obey the cockerel’s clarion call.

Of if perchance you’re office bound
surrounded only by the sound
of papers shuffled to and fro.
You have no choice you still must go.

Obey the cockerel’s clarion call.

On winter mornings dark and cold
and summer days when it grows hot.
But I don’t care I am grown old
and have retired so I will not.

Obey the cockerel’s clarion call.

Unbelievers (Chapter 109, Holy Koran)

I ask for refuge to Allah from Satan the exiled evildoer.
In the name of Allah the Kind and the Merciful Giver.

Say, O those who disbelieve
I don't worship that you worship
And you don't worship Him Whom I worship
And I won't worship that you worship
And you don't worship Him Whom I worship
Your religion is yours and our religion is ours to keep.

Ordinary Worship

Ordinary people in this life, are used for God through Jesus Christ,
To help other men come to see, what He has done for you and me.
First worship begins in our hearts; it’s where all true worship starts,
And true worship, you will find, is with all your heart, soul and mind.

We seek God in an ordinary way, and to The Lord we humbly pray,
We worship God in Spirit and Truth, with no need of a sign or proof,
Knowing that He’s a God of Love, we lift our heart to heaven above.
Not confined by just one steeple, we worship as a universal people.

Ordinary people from every nation, become as one in His Salvation,
Saved by One Extraordinary God, to serve Him wherever men trod.
We direct our worship to God above, expressing to Him all our love,
And thankfulness for His only Son, God’s gift unmatched by anyone.

Our worship is mediated by Christ, who died to give all men new life,
A life of service we devote to Him, who died as a sacrifice for our sin.
Worship is performed in The Spirit, and a blessing to all who hear it,
As believers we gather corporately, to praise The King of all Eternity.

With hearts bowing in submission, to The Lord’s Great Commission,
Filled with reverence and in awe, of Christ, The King and Lord of all,
Prepared for service and ministry, for The Lord and God of Eternity,
Are ordinary people saved by Christ, to be an extraordinary sacrifice.

Old Crony

I had a friend, a breezy friend
I liked an awful lot;
And in his company no end
Of happiness I got.
We clicked in temper, taste and mood,
We gypsied side by side,--
And then, as no pal ever should,
He upped and died.

A score of years have since gone by,
Yet I bemoan him still;
He used to call me Bob and I
Was wont to call him Bill.
Oh how I wish that he were here,
How we would bravely walk
On heather hills to tavern cheer,
And talk and talk!

If as he always used to do,
He'd just drop in to tea,
To rest awhile and jest awhile,
How chirpy I would be!
Then he would puff his pipe of briar
And I my cigarette,
And we would yarn beside the fire,
And time forget.

Old Pal, come back a little while,
If just to let me say
How much I miss your jolly smile
Now you have gone away.
Ah, when in life's allotted span
We near our journey's end,
What greater treasure is there than
A Golden Friend!

And He Decided To Join Us

Sometimes things happen
and they surprise everyone.
As I held my Sunday service
in the main street of our western town,
we had a quite a few visitors
who had come along.
Some of them had dogs
and one had a beautiful Husky.
As we began to sing our first hymn,
All Things Bright and Beautiful
the Husky decided to join us in the choruses.
It was the first time I’ve had
one of the creatures great and small
join us in our service.
He sang or howled his heart out
along with us all.
He didn’t sing in the verses
they were left to us,
only the choruses were his treat.
He thoroughly enjoyed himself
and his presence was an uplifting treat.
He became an instant celebrity
and when the service was over,
he was dry from all the singing he had done.
His reward for his efforts was
a large bowl of refreshing cool water.

28 September 2009

Author’s note:

This story is true and happened on Sunday 27 September 2009 at my end of season service. The Husky stole the service, he seemed to like the choruses as it was not the only hymn he joined in.

Past the Almighty Commander

I hear soldier’s boots
marching rhythmic
and they past in rows.

There’s no marching band
that accompanies the slow march,
just a bugle
that sounds melancholic.

The minister says his words
and I hear: “he’s now with God, ”
and something of dust to dust

The last trumpet’s notes
catches my ear
and there are some rifle shots
that I hear reporting.

An Orange, white and blue flag
is folded around the chest
that slowly disappears into the grave,
while tears stream down the cheeks
of a woman and some children.

The wind starts blowing
and some doves fly past
and I wonder what God does
with brave heroes?

Are there legions of angels
of the Lord
that return with flaming swords
from battles
with the darkness?

Do they also march in rank and row,
past the Almighty Commander?

Awaiting my next posting

I hear a distant bugle calling
bravely as the twilights falling
The plaintive notes of the last post,
when I’m alone affect me most.

As I remember those who fell
in defence of liberty.
Where they lie now no man can
but I remember vividly

Lofty, only five foot two
and his best mate big Geordie Green.
Taff Thomas and Dai Williams too.
I wonder what they might have been

Had death not claimed them one and all
selected them quite randomly.
Each time I hear that bugle call
a sense of guilt falls over me.

Why was I chosen to survive
to wed and raise a family.
When they gave all they had to give
each death a separate tragedy.

But I live on. I know not why
death chose my friends, left me behind.
The only thing I know is I
Must keep their memories in mind.

The plaintive notes the bugler plays
that drift across the fields to me
Will mark too, the end of my days
when I rejoin their company.

C.S. Lewis

The perfect church service would be the one we were almost unaware of our attention would have been on God. But every novelty prevents this. It fixes our attention on the service itself and thinking about worship is a different thing than worshipping... 'Tis mad idolatry that makes the service greater than the god.

To live in others

Bravery is measured in one’s adversity
And not in one’s victory; as such he’s brave.
Toughness is measured in one’s tolerance
And not in one’s conquest; as such he’s tough.
Kindness is measured in one’s empathy
And not in one’s sympathy; as such he’s kind.
He makes people more honest than they are,
More sincere than they used to be
And more committed than they are.
He illuminates around but not himself.
Be as he to lead the people given.

Id Do It Again

A one man band on a one night stand
As a one man band should be
The cried for more, he replied why sure
And he played one just for free
The sounds he laid down. the songs he played
Made the ladies all come to call
He was born in the back of a seminole bus
On the road to niagra falls
Id do it again, Id do it again
Id do it again
The one man band philosophical man
Didnt lie when he said to us
I seen the high rollers come and go
Its the holy rollers I trust
The man said then he was sixteen when
He retired from the county school
A wee bit thin with a will to begin
He was known to be know mans fool
Id do it again, Id do it again
Id do it again
The one man band was a mighty good man
Cause he played til the break of dawn
He ups and downs about four more rounds
And he stayed til the crowd went home
It seemed to me like he never could be
Like anything Id ever seen before
When he stepped from the stage with his ax in his hand
And he run through the backstage door
Id do it again, Id do it again
Id do it again
A one man band on a one night stand
As a one man band should be
They cried for more, he replied why sure
And he played one just for free
