Jonathan Swift

Epitaph In Berkeley Church-Yard, Gloucestershire

Here lies the Earl of Suffolk's fool,
Men call'd him Dicky Pearce;
His folly served to make folks laugh,
When wit and mirth were scarce.

Poor Dick, alas! is dead and gone,
What signifies to cry?
Dickies enough are still behind,
To laugh at by and by.

Buried, June 18, 1728, aged 63.

Laugh Clown Laugh

Laugh Clown laugh,
that's what they want me to do.
I guess I'm doing something right
because this Clown made you laugh too.
Laugh Clown laugh,
make everyone laugh real hard.
Besides, Who would it hurt?
Will anyone notice
how it has scarred?
Laugh Clown laugh,
but only for a while,
at least until you see
that the humor is in your denial.

Fundamental of Liar Chapter XXII: Laugh

there's laugh, forced laugh
laugh, gentle rejection without word
laugh, looking sympathy with laugh
laugh but actually doesn't laugh
hiding anger, hiding pain
cheerful laugh but alone inside
why you try hard to impress people?
tired and wounded more
laughing your foolish joke
and crying life in the dark room
laugh for yourself
laugh with your heart
and you'll never regret to try an honest laugh

I'm Down

You telling lies thinking i can't see
You don't cry 'cos you're laughing at me
I'm down (i'm really down)
I'm down (down on the ground)
I'm down (i'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know i'm down
(how can you laugh) when you know i'm down.
Man buys ring woman throws it away
Same damn thing happens everyday
I'm down (i'm really down)
I'm down (down on the ground)
I'm down (i'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know i'm down
(how can you laugh) when you know i'm down.
We're all alone and there's nobody else
You still moan: "keep your hands to yourself!"
I'm down (i'm really down)
I'm down (down on the ground)
I'm down (i'm really down)
How can you laugh when you know i'm down
(how can you laugh) when you know i'm down.
Don't you know that i'm down (i'm really down)
Don't you know that i'm down (i'm really down)
Down on the ground (i'm really down)
Don't you know that i'm down (i'm really down)
Down, down, down.

Laugh…….

We laugh today; we'll laugh tomorrow
Over today's joy and yesterday's sorrow
Nothing is permanent, nothing is forever
So we laugh to forget and with sorrow sever
From our happiness' mirth to laugh in play
So merry is the soul who laughs away
The pain life brings, the pain of being
Laughing till joy from pain is fleeing
To where? Our panacea of hearty laugh
I guess it's better than pain's angry wrath
Laugh…….

The Philosophic Pill

I've wisdom from the East and from the West,
That's subject to no academic rule;
You may find it in the jeering of a jest,
Or distill it from the folly of a fool.
I can teach you with a quip, if I've a mind;
I can trick you into learning with a laugh;
Oh, winnow all my folly, and you'll find
A grain or two of truth among the chaff!

I can set a braggart quailing with a quip,
The upstart I can wither with a whim;
He may wear a merry laugh upon his lip,
But his laughter has an echo that is grim.
When they've offered to the world in merry guise,
Unpleasant truths are swallowed with a will -
For he who'd make his fellow-creatures wise
Should always gild the philosophic pill!

Convicts Love Canaries

Dick's dead! It was the Polack guard
Put powdered glass into his cage
When I was tramping round the yard,--
I could have killed him in my rage.
I slugged him with that wrench I stole:
That's why I'm rotting in the Hole.

Dick's dead! Sure I wish I was too.
His honey breast, his lacy claws
I kissed and cried, for well I knew
They murdered him. I cursed because
He was my only chum on earth . . .
Oh how he cheered me with his mirth!

Dick's dead! I know he cared for me.
Being I'm Irish I love song,
And there was heaven in his glee;
I'd bless his heart the dour day long.
I'd let him flutter round the cell;
He'd light upon my hand . . . Oh hell!

Dick's dead! They've thrown me in the Hole.
To break our spirits how they try!
My bed a plank, blind as a mole,
Sure I'll be nuts before I die . . .
Here in the night, dark as the Pit
I'm seeing sunny wings aflit.
Here in the silence, hark his song!
--Poor Dick! Oh Christ, how long, how long!

Dedicated To Laughter!

Dedicated to laughter! Yes!
It gives your brain a tickle!
It brings a lotto happiness,
You've gotto have a giggle!
Don't hold it back! Let it be free!
Roll on the floor as well!
Then other folks will laugh with glee -
And think it's wonderfell...
Children are known to laugh the most -
They've learnt to tell jokes, too...
With limericks from coast-to-coast
To get the message through!
Yes, laughter lifts the lungs like songs...
Thus tensions melt away...
That's why all comics should get gongs
When honours are given in May...
If I get knighted, as it were,
The day I leave The Mall,
Be kind enough to call me, SIR!
Not Mister, mate or pal!
All wise-cracks pour from lightning brains
That see life's ironies,
Sifting out truths from lies like grains
With food for thought to please!
I'd like to think that humour spreads
Like smiles as joy imparts.
Some jokes are like fine thoroughbreds -
They're trained to thrill our hearts!
Blessed is the soul that's learnt to laugh
Yet cares for other folks -
It proves a noble epitaph
That one was known for jokes!
A precious pun's not always cute!
But sometimes it's OK...
So do your best to be astute!
You'll make somebody's day!

Incognito

My name is Dick.
I've had that name since the day I was born.
OK - it's Richard, but those who call me that
have a clipboard in their hand.

Then in my 20's I changed my name to Rick.
Please keep in mind - that was in `72.
At least I didn't choose Song Of Dog,
or Ben 2 Awe Sun.

Now some just call me Rick,
and some still call me Dick.
Some say Richard, then there's some
who aren't too sure of what to say.

Dick:
as a noun - What a dick!
an adjective - Hey dick head!
a verb: - Don't dick around!
an expletive - Dick! My hair is on fire!
Unless, of course, your name is Dick.

Corn Grinders

O little mouse, why dost thou cry
While merry stars laugh in the sky?

Alas! alas! my lord is dead!
Ah, who will ease my bitter pain?
He went to seek a millet-grain
In the rich farmer's granary shed;
They caught him in a baited snare,
And slew my lover unaware:
Alas! alas! my lord is dead.

O little deer, why dost thou moan,
Hid in thy forest-bower alone?

Alas! alas! my lord is dead!
Ah! who will quiet my lament?

At fall of eventide he went
To drink beside the river-head;
A waiting hunter threw his dart,
And struck my lover through the heart.
Alas! alas! my lord is dead.

O little bride, why dost thou weep
With all the happy world asleep?

Alas! alas! my lord is dead!
Ah, who will stay these hungry tears,
Or still the want of famished years,
And crown with love my marriage-bed?
My soul burns with the quenchless fire
That lit my lover's funeral pyre:
Alas! alas! my lord is dead.

Sometimes There's Three

There’s two sides to every story
And sometimes there’s three
You can take a trip around the world
To simply cross the street
I know, ‘cause that's what happened to me

Laugh, laugh
Even the jester has to laugh
When everything turns upside down
It sometimes helps to laugh

There's two paths on every journey
And sometimes there's three
You can meet your fate on the same road
You took to avoid it
I know, 'cause that's what happened to me

Laugh, laugh
Even the jester has to laugh
When everything turns upside down
It sometimes helps to laugh

And at the crossroads, don't turn and look away
Let it kiss you on the face
And then have a laugh

There’s two women in your life
And sometimes there’s three
You can make a wish upon a star
Only to find it land in your street
I know, ‘cause that's what happened to me

Laugh, laugh
Even the jester has to laugh
When everything turns upside down
It sometimes helps to laugh

There’s two people fighting for your mind
And sometimes there’s three
Each mask you wear at different times
Till one fits comfortably
I know, ‘cause that's what happened to me

Laugh, laugh
Even the jester has to laugh
When everything turns upside down
It sometimes helps to laugh

And at the crossroads, don' turn and look away
Let it kiss you on the face
And then have a laugh

This Will Make You Laugh

This will make you laugh,
I staked my dreams on you.
This will make you laugh,
They never did come true.
I took a chance on the one romance,
I vowed it couldn't miss.
But I should have known to never judge,
A heart borrowed kiss.
This will make you laugh,
I once believed in you.
And for all my love,
You didn't see it through.
Of all the fools, I break the rule.
I love you still you see,
This will make you laugh,
But it's not funny to me.

The Fool

"But it isn't playing the game," he said,
And he slammed his books away;
"The Latin and Greek I've got in my head
Will do for a duller day."
"Rubbish!" I cried; "The bugle's call
Isn't for lads from school."
D'ye think he'd listen? Oh, not at all:
So I called him a fool, a fool.

Now there's his dog by his empty bed,
And the flute he used to play,
And his favourite bat . . . but Dick he's dead,
Somewhere in France, they say:
Dick with his rapture of song and sun,
Dick of the yellow hair,
Dicky whose life had but begun,
Carrion-cold out there.

Look at his prizes all in a row:
Surely a hint of fame.
Now he's finished with, -- nothing to show:
Doesn't it seem a shame?
Look from the window! All you see
Was to be his one day:
Forest and furrow, lawn and lea,
And he goes and chucks it away.

Chucks it away to die in the dark:
Somebody saw him fall,
Part of him mud, part of him blood,
The rest of him -- not at all.
And yet I'll bet he was never afraid,
And he went as the best of 'em go,
For his hand was clenched on his broken blade,
And his face was turned to the foe.

And I called him a fool . . . oh how blind was I!
And the cup of my grief's abrim.
Will Glory o' England ever die
So long as we've lads like him?
So long as we've fond and fearless fools,
Who, spurning fortune and fame,
Turn out with the rallying cry of their schools,
Just bent on playing the game.

A fool! Ah no! He was more than wise.
His was the proudest part.
He died with the glory of faith in his eyes,
And the glory of love in his heart.
And though there's never a grave to tell,
Nor a cross to mark his fall,
Thank God! we know that he "batted well"
In the last great Game of all.

Every Cent Spent

Laugh.
I want you to do it,
Until you are through.

Do it with unstoppable fun.

I hope your eyes are wide open to see...
I am not blind at all to notice,
Your laughter is directed at me.

Laugh.
I want you to do it,
Until you are through.

Do it with unstoppable fun.
I'm wanting you to do this until you are done.

Laugh!
Continue on.

The expense of your humorous joviality,
Will not be paid by me.
But you.
This I guarantee.

And at these prices paid today,
For what you do...
Every cent spent,
At 'your' expense...
Comes with a receipt,
To verify the value.
Showing you the worth,
Of your actions served.

Laugh.
I want you to do it,
Until you are through.
Laugh,
Don't stop.
I encourage more of it from you!

And I promise you this...
Every cent spent,
At 'your' expense'...
Will be returned as deserved.

Please Let Me Please

What did you do today? You turned the other way
I tried to kiss you, but you laughed in my face
It's a one thing to do knowin' that I love you
Don't be to hasty; the tables will turn
Please, please, please, let me please ya
Please let me please ya. Please let me, Louise
Please, please, please, let me please ya
Please let me please ya. Please let me, Louise
Why are you different now? Did I hurt you somehow?
If so, then tell me, but don't laugh in my face
If I said something strong, I'll admit I was wrong
Come on and tell me, but don't laugh in my face
Please, please, please, let me please ya
Please let me please ya. Please let me, Louise
Please, please, please, let me please ya
Please let me please ya. Please let me, Louise
break
I always treat you right. Why do you wanna fight?
Go if you want to, but don't laugh in my face
If I try kissin' you, don't make me out a fool
Come and tell me, but don't laugh in my face
Please, please, please, let me please ya
Please let me please ya. Please let me, Louise
Please, please, please, let me please ya

Laugh

Love laughed at you and made you blue
Now heres what you should do
Well laugh, though your heart is breaking in two
Yeah laugh, dont let them know he hurt you
Well laugh and pretend true love will come again
Yeah laugh, laugh and laugh
Laugh, though the one you love is really gone
Yeah laugh, even though youll be alone
Yeah laugh and pretend true love will come again
Yeah laugh, laugh and laugh
Well let me hear you laugh now
Though its hard, so hard for you to do
Laugh with me, cos you see
Ive been there too
Well laugh and pretend true love will come again
Yeah laugh and believe its not the end
Yeah laugh like a clown
Dont let your heart break down
Yeah laugh, laugh and laugh
Love laughed, its true
But look at you
Now youre laughing too

The Mirror

'Alas!' said the devil, said he to me
And his swart face drooped with care
'Life is a liar, a cheat,' said he
'And the end of it all - despair.
Why mourn you here, poor pawn of the Fates?
The way lies ready: the hemlock waits.
And I'll give you a toast ere you seek release:
'To Death, the gentleman, crowned with peace'!'

'Have done, smart devil!' I made reply.
'Have done with your air of gloom.
The world seemed dreary for such as I
Ere you came into the room.
I was ready, I own, for the crowning sin,
But your foolish babbling makes me grin.
Yet the poisoned cup might I e'en now quaff;
But how can I drink when I want to laugh?

'Poor fool!' moaned the devil. 'Vain words you lisp,
Dull dupe of an ancient lie.
What seek you here but a will-o'-the-wisp,
Mocking you till you die?
For the world's gone mad and the nations rave.
Choose! An ugly dream, or a peaceful grave.
You shall thirst, you shall starve while the earth you roam.
Ah, pick up the dagger and drive it home.'

'Oh, foolish devil!' I made reply.
'Thus to defeat you end,
With your woeful visage and wistful eye:
I could greet you now as a friend.
For, as in a mirror, I now have seen
The fear-crazed fool that I might have been.
Come; tell me some more of this cheerless earth.'
But the devil was gone; and I shrieked with mirth.

Laugh

If you can’t laugh at yourself a lot,
You’re not enjoying the life you’ve got.
The greatest source of humor on earth
Has followed you all around since birth.

Into your mirror laugh or at least smile
And be happy for at least a while.
A good laugh will slow that clock down;
Just as it speeds up with every frown.

Laugh at things that make you sad.
You’ll find out they really aren’t so bad.

The Fool

Act not as per fundamental rule
is an act of a fool,
Like on a summer sunny day
wearing heavy cloth of wool.

Fool, a doer of mistakes
to make unwise annoy or laugh.
The fool can not understand
easily whatever is taught.

It's foolish to laugh on mistakes
and keep apathy.
The wise try to rectify the wrongs
having sympathy.

Can we ingnore contribution of fools
to the world of entertainment,
All the jokers, comedians
replicate their deeds for amusement.

A fool is not a fool always,
fool can too turn wise somewhere.
Kalidas, foolish in his boyhood
became a great poet and writer.

There are people of the school
without irritating they keep cool,
mend or correct mistakes, thinking,
after all it's God who made the fool.
