Malaysiana - Vermilion Red Hibiscus (National Flower)
they line the streets
the nation's hospitality
flowing through vermillion red
petals so soft, gentle, and
graceful they bring on the
best smiles on people's faces
a camaraderie fills the
Malaysian air the auspicious
hibiscus breathes
its golden pistil steals into
people's hearts to powder
their senses with enchantments
surprises and irresistible delights
vermillion red hibiscus, they bow
and bow to tourists the moment
they touch down on Malaysian soil
- all the way to town

Modern Love XXXVIII (Hibiscus' of Rome)
Walk towards the Coliseum
Without passing an ancient ruin
Follow Via Sistina, cross in front
Of Santa Maria Maggiore, by San Pietro
In Vincoli, come to via del Colosseo
Somber gigantic Coliseum, gaping apertures
pouring the long, pale light of a lonely moon
Mysterious southern moon, phantasm of twilight
Pointing to hungry Lion’s Den,
loggia of brave gladiators,
podium of the Caesars,
ascend a half-dilapidated staircase of stone
where the hibiscus
of flowering wombs
of red hearts
dwells
hibiscus’ red womb lips, open, each dawn
revealing throats of erect pink pistils’
with crowns of ochre thorns
(I am falling for a hibiscus,
For a lost seagull
For two pools of ochre revealing a soul
For soft hands which hold my mind
For a smile of endless dawns
For words, your words
I am falling for your words
of eternal promises of endless
Impermanence
A man, dreaming, awakened
by morning’s fecund dew
in your hibiscus’ womb
from a life of sleep)
Sad sparrows flutter, beak at crown of thorns
Pulling out of pistils’ head
Drops of orange blood on dark chests
Creating robins who take wing
creating a magenta sunrise
in tear filled clouds
above manhattan island
what sad joy to have everything
the way the hibiscus wants
taking my heart to the sky
giving me verses of other poems
and the odor of red,
love that scent,
of red petals creating
distant melancholy fields
where every gesture
bleeds to the sky
like a lonely heart
the hibiscus seeds flowers
in late afternoon and sighs,
creating possibilities of evening stars
in its tragic romantic acceptance
of solitude
what sad joy, to be like a hibiscus
full of red sadness,
saluting other flowers
(like Lancelot,
a romantic hero
in an earthly tomb)
which give her birth
and courage
showing her erect pistils’
her crown of thorns
her bleeding womb
What sad joy, each twilight evening
When the red petals of hibiscus’ womb
dance a wonder full closure
Silently sealing red lips,
Red hearts,
Plum mouths
green arms
someday, as a red womb
my soul shall, also,
close its redness
to singing parrots
on late afternoons
while a blue, serene sky
peals in joy
as this morning is pealing
in the red hibiscus' wombs
Someday,
all those who love
red hibiscus’ wombs,
shall close, also,
And all their dreams
shall be reborn
again,
as the red wombs of the hibiscus
are reborn each morning
in a daily ritual
of silent pain of blood
Someday,
my spirit will become
nostalgic
finally closing
like a hibiscus’ red flower
and be alone,
secure,
with no being,
no green leaves,
no blue sky,
no plum mouth,
no sad arms,
no red lips,
no red pistil
with ochre crown of thorns,
Then, my spirit shall dance
among shimmering quiet stars
seeking your brown eyes,
as all the hibiscus’s red wombs
remain, dancing,
singing the sad joy
of
coming and going
and discovery
.
Walk towards
somber Coliseum,
pale light of a lonely moon
trapped in endless twilights
of dawn and dusk
brave dwelling
of flowering red hearts
of you
of me
of us

Happy Birthday
When twilight came
I saw the grey cloud is spooling
Is spooling fly
touch toThe Vermillion sky
The street lamp pole run away
The black green trees run away
Behind me
From behind the window glass
when the bus is runing very fast
The mercury lamp is blazing yellowish
blazing of the people lamp
all run away behind me
when the bus is run very fast forward
among the sedan and another bus
touch to the Vermillion sky
going run to touch our home
betwen Magrib to Isya
promised
to come around sun down
on her birthday
hurry to meet and kiss her foreheads
wishpering her to happy birthday
she cooks spagetti
from morning
Preparing herself birthday
Fortytwo and threeyyears

You ask me to leave (Pantoum poetry)
The “pantun” is a Malaysian poetic form that was introduced to the West by French novelist, essayist, and poet, Victor Hugo (1802-1885) , hence the French spelling, “pantoum.” Westerners have taken creative liberties with the Malaysian form, which tends to follow a standard rhyme form of ABAB, where multiple, rather than single subjects, are introduced. While pantoums can have unlimited stanzas, you might want to begin with a 3-stanza poem until you get the hang of it:
Stanza 1: Line 1/Line 2/Line 3/Line 4
Stanza 2: Line 5 (repeat of line 2 in stanza 1) /Line 6 (new line) /Line 7 (repeat of line 4 in stanza 1) /
Line 8 (new line)
Stanza 3/Last Stanza (This is the format for the last stanza regardless of how many preceding stanzas exist) : Line 9 (line 2 of the previous stanza) /Line 10 (line 3 of the first stanza) /Line 11 (line 4 of the previous stanza) /Line 12 (line 1 of the first stanza)
And you ask me to leave all behind
Now when our moment in time is done
Going nowhere with nothing in mind
'Cause you're my world and my special one
Now when our moment in time is done
I love you like there's no end in sight
'Cause you're my world and my special one
You're still on my mind all day and night.
I love you like there's no end in sight
You're inside me filling my soul's space
You're still on my mind all day and night.
I feel still cuddled in your embrace
You're inside me filling my soul's space
Going nowhere with nothing in mind
I feel still cuddled in your embrace
And you ask me to leave it all behind

Kiasu, what a hindrance
something is amiss
something is amiss
it is a piece of his brain
this kiasu society
is a hindrance to
growth of the most important kind
and steals the peace a little
he says what is not
from his heart
but where the masses run
not that they are wrong
but he is ignoring the light
the voice that is the
essence of the man
(kiasu - a malaysian word
about people who always
fear losing to the extent
that they follow the masses.)

First Encounter - Sudirman Arshad
Sudirman
the air charged too with his spirit,
talent and optimism
as riveting as his songs
his personality and
laughter
Sudirman
for the man, laughters and songs
conquer all
Sudirman
his laughter too is
music to our ears
Sudirman
cutting across racial barrier
with laughter and songs
The late Sudirman reigned the Malaysian entertainment industry in the 80s and early 90s after he won a national talentime contest Bintang RTM organised by Malaysian television network RTM.
A graduate in law he had the nation enthralled with his riveting showmanship and songs that cut across racial barrier in English, Malay and even Chinese. He was also judged Asia's best entertainer in an Asian international music festival held in England in the 80s.

The Black Roses
In the garden of wild plants
I search for a Rose or a Lily.
The laugh of the plants get subdued
Then I look for a Jasmine or a Hibiscus.
Then I hear the sob of a flower a little away
With black petals all within her.
'Who are you all? ', I queried.
'You call us black roses', they said.
Unplucked, untouched and unfelt they remain
The black roses of a wild region!
'May I pluck one of you? ' I asked.
'You are welcome to liberate us all' they said.
Liberation! I am a bit confused,
Liberation of a flower is a novel idea
And I return with a few black roses
For I cant liberate them by plucking at a go.
The Rose fades, the Lily shrinks,
The Jasmine dries up and the Hibiscus falls.
But my mind says to me now for certain,
'These Black Roses will bloom in your gardens once'.

The Great Encounter
The Great encounter
The mountains, that kept the sky from strangling us,
has all but disappeared. The sky has now swallowed
the roof of our houses. It is alarming, to be squished
between soil and sky as they embrace with selfish
lust in their hearts; finally intercourse. We must prise
them apart by building egocentric Dubai towers and
boasting Malaysian skyscrapers, to keep the sky pure,
and not let it sink into debauchery with mother earth.

What Ever Happened
What ever happened to smiles that people used to share
And in their faces you saw they cared.
People were more friendly then
And for a neighbor, they would bend.
People used to feel other peoples pains
Now they say “ oh what a shame”.
People used to walk with dignity and pride
Now they just run and hide.
What ever happened to block parties and such
Where you could get a smile
And a warm gentle touch.
Where people would exchange recipes
And taste each others foods.
And bring smiles of happiness to
Get others out of their moods.
What ever happened to kids playing
Stickball on the streets, and people
Would gather for families to meet.
Where children would sell lemonade
For a nickel a glass, and they would
Run out much to fast.
When you would make your own shoe shine box
And go to the corner of freeman and fox.
The shoes were shined for fifteen cents
The best shines that you could get.
Then we’d get empty pickle jars and fill
Them with cold water and a shot glass
And in the cap, a hole we’d make
And the more they played the greater the stake.
(not many people knew that the colder the water-
(the coin would turn away, and away from the glass it would sway)
We learned to earn a living at a very young age
And living life was a stage.
What ever happened to those days of old
Where people were more friendly
And yet more bold.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED?

People talk the streets hypnotic
Another day has come
And I cannot help it
I’ve got to go out and hear
I’ve got to go out and let it hear me
Walk the streets like walk the clouds
People speak people laugh
People laugh and their laughter
Spreads my laughter too
People look at me I look at them
They want to come into my eyes
They wonder I wonder
I take them like a picture
I want to go in they take me in
We walk together
People talk shallow talks
I hear the depths below
People beg the streets
I beg the streets with them
People seek the streets
Being sought by them
People cry my tears
People kiss I can feel the kisses
People touch I can feel the touches
People talk the streets
I talk people in the streets
Put fragments of their talk
Into a Hypnos mosaic
Of my own words
‘Communication is health. Communication.’

Malaysiana - Straits of Malacca
straits of malacca,
the treacherous divider
between Malaysia, Sumatra.
a line between poverty, wealth.
a storm beats into the sea tonight,
lightning outlines a motorboat
negotiating its way
through the crashing undulating waves
furious as if angry at trespassers.
the straits that has deceived,
taken countless treasures over the centuries
from the cruelest of pirates,
to the greediest of colonisers,
tonight seems hungry for human souls
dousing out the light behind the tunnel
for penniless, hunger striken sumatrans.
The human traffickers
in their anxiety to turn away from sea police shove them off like logs
pointing to Malaysian shore
indistinct as their fate
their cries muffled
by the bitter cold waves
and rattling engines.
the motorboat that has promised a dream
tonight decides to chart it all into sea.
yes, arrival at Malaysian shore
albeit in waves few kilometres off.
The sorrow of the sumatrans
could only be seen on their
scowled faces as their corpses
float down the straits, some
lost, some fished up.
Like the waves of the straits of opportunities
that continue pounding the shores,
this illegal trafficking continues
punctuated by such heartstirring drama
that subsides into the backside of the brain
as soon as the next wave crashes onto shore.

It climbs the wall
As if reaching
For sunbeams
Of gentle Ole' Sol

Watered and
Fertilized
Exquisitly alive
Still

Near the water

Dancing moisture

Layin It On The Line
You see it every day in every way
We all hear the same routines
They all say that its okay
Just let us take care of everything
So we lay it on the line
Layin it on the line (layin it on the line)
Layin it all, right on the line
Just layin it on the line (layin it on the line)
Layin it all, were livin on the front line
I can see it in the faces
We got trouble in the streets tonight
And power keeps us in our places
And it doesnt matter if youre left or right
You lay it on the line
Layin it on the line (layin it on the line)
Just layin it all, right on the line
Layin it on the line, (layin it on the line)
Layin it all, right on the line
Take it to the wilderness
Into the jungle sun
Lookin for the voice of reason
Inside this babylon
Got u.s. boys on foreign soil
Spillin their blood to keep the peace
Cities will vanish in turmoil
While the sheiks lay sleepin on the beach
We lay it on the line
Layin it on the line (layin it on the line)
Layin it all, right on the line
Just layin it on the line (layin it on the line)
Layin it all, right on the line
Layin it on the line
Just layin it all
Layin it on the line
Just layin it all
