Twenty Seven!
We entered last night at gate four,
the precious tickets in our hands.
The Anthem’s ending drowned in cheers
as we took seats high in the stands.
“Godzilla “had a monster night.
He was a one man wrecking crew.
Pedro couldn’t get him out.
Nothing really he could do.
Here and there the Phillies tried
To stage a rally, beat the best.
But Andy always held them down
while pitching on just three days rest.
When “enter Sandman” starts to play
It’s like a Frank Sinatra score:
Game over for the Phillies’ reign
They weren’t coming back, down four.
A happy meeting at the mound,
once Victorino grounded out
As coaches, players stormed the field
from the first base side dugout.
Flags and pennants, banners wave
And Modell’s opens up the store
Faithful fans behold the prize
Like early Christians filled with awe.

Football - The most beautiful game
After stepping into the field
there is no way out
even before you start the game
you hear the fans shout
The players then sings their anthem
its football......
the most beautiful game.....
And when the whistle blows
the crowd starts their roar
in the 90 tensed minutes
the players got to score
Football is friendly only in name
because friendliness is not meant for football....
the most beautiful game....
So when the hard tackles go in
and injured fellow goes out
the crowd becomes furious
and starts to shout
Even after breaking one's leg
there seems to be no shame
because its football....
the most beautiful game....
Taking Dad to a Game
The Polo Grounds, when the Field’s first seen
are a most magical shade of green.
Hand in hand, me and my Dad
head for our seats in the right field stands.
It’s the Cincinnati Reds in town
to play the New York Mets.
There’s a double header scheduled,
How much better could it get?
Cincinnati took the first game
by a score of three to nil.
My hot dog was delicious
Dad had a beer to swill.
The nightcap was a wild affair
The Mets won thirteen- twelve.
You could look it up, as Casey said,
if you should care to delve.
We rode the subway home that night
side by side, me and my Dad.
We reminisced about the game
Like the most knowledgeable fans
The Q44 from Flushing took us
up Queensboro Hill, ,
past Carvel and Booth Memorial,
I remember it well still.
My father turned to look at me
as five decades creased my brow.
Making us the self same age
What he was then, so I am now.
Thirty years, about, its been
Since last I saw my Dad.
The dead don't get to baseball games,
Which I think is rather sad.
They can't enjoy a summer night
on the wrong side of the grass.
And an ice cold beer is greatly missed-
They can't pour themselves a glass
In memory, we still can walk
With those who came before.
So I took my Dad to a baseball game
What was I waiting for?

Black baseball, it was a known fact jack
With the weather so hot, who could play like danny day
The greatest and the best, like the satchel brother paige
Long tom and little bomb, in the hall of fame
Like josh and bunt, be alert, duck
Everybody was down for beer and peanuts
Foxes in their sunday's best, their brightest dress

Now baseball today troop, is mostly not racial
But back in the days it was all segregated
The whites had the majors and then the blacks had the negro leagues
They both had great talent but then us blacks have no history
Of all our great players, the teams in the ballpark
But we're here to shed light, restore the glory they haven't got
Black baseball, they paved the way

Now the ballparks they played in was very far from a stadium
They only sat hundreds troops as opposed to the thousands
But the stands they was packed, for the league that was fat
With teams like the baccarats and the homestead grays
The eagles and many more, came ready to play
In cities like birmingham, newark and chi-town
The bus trips were very long, paychecks would bring a frown
But not to these players, cause they really loved baseball
You could ban them from majors, but not from the game
With players like leon day, who pitched almost every day
His arm would hold up, blowin hitters with smoke away
And then there was bullet joe, also was smokey joe
King richard and savateen, and brothers like ed pole
Next, batter up!

Bring it home keith!

They took the long great line that was so fine
Super and strong to play, three games a day
Hey hey, thunder twins are up and gonna win again
Make the other players say "oh him again!"

Alex and double duty, and don't forget juty
Talent was there, and it was black

Give them their credit folks, and build em a hall of fame
Where legends can rest, with uniforms and the whole shebang
And honor the players, coaches fans and the ballparks
From the giants or phillies, to the new york like yankees
The pittsburgh crawfords, yeah they don't have to thank me
Just thank the red bull's, just thank the abe manley's
Just thank rufus lewis, a few names that grab me

Farewell To My Fans
A farewell to my fans
When I am just a faded memory,
and my dimensions shift in your mind’s eye-
think back upon the nights you spent at me
around a field of green beneath the sky.
For you were here the night back in 04’
The night that Jeter dove into my stands
When Yanks and Red Sox played a thirteenth Frame
he caught the ball but had to leave the game.
And you were here when A-Rod hit three bombs
Against the cy young candidate Colon-
you stood expectant in my left field stands
To catch the fourth if ever it should land..
Who can forget old Freddy and his pan-
The “Ancient Mariner” of Yankee fans
He wanders through my aisles just like a vendor-
He bangs the drum more slowly this September.
I’ve been the field where Ruth and Mantle played-
where DiMaggio stood out at center stage.
I’ve been the home plate where the luckiest man
bowed out before his disbelieving fans.
I’ve played host often to a Series game
My champions have added to my fame.
The shadows long upon my infield face
As days grew short and cool at Autumn’s pace.
I was the place George Herman lay in state
When he lost his fight for life in 48’
Thousands of you wandered past his bier
(the only one he didn’t want, I hear) .
But now my time has come, they say I’m through
And I think hard what Gehrig had to do-
He passed on the baton from failing hands
So I too say my farewell to the fans.

Football Friday
Friday nite, small towns, big city
Big lights, mark field
quietly awaiting
for bands, fans
school colors, school spirits
pep rally's, scoring alleys
big crowds, cheering fans
cheerleaders dancing, cheering
Root Root for the home team
balls flying, bodies diving
scrambles of run, bombs of passes
scoring touchdowns, holding them down
Win Win hail to our team
Lose Lose hold your heads high
there's another day to win the game
loading bus, cheers and jeers
what a night, for the fight
Win Win for the home crowd
Go Go we won't go
fight fight thru the night
finally a win, what a team
play the game as your first
win it like your last
sportsmanship is the respect
give a hand shake win or lose
till the next game we will go
on another beautiful Friday night

There used to be a ballpark here
The Ghosts of Ruth and Gehrig sat
Up in Tier 35
And wiped tears from translucent cheeks
As the final anthem died.
DiMaggio brought the popcorn
The Mick supplied the beer
He bought it up in heaven
Cause it’s cheaper there than here.
“An epic game”, the Babe enthused
“The best I ever saw”
he chowed down on some hot dogs
And looked around for more.
Gehrig glanced out at his bat
Atop the center pole
And wished to get it in his hands
And feel its weight once more.
“I had a streak in 41’ the longest in the game”
Then DiMaggio fell silent and turned to watch the game
“I did my best in 56’”Mantle then exclaimed
“I wonder what I could have been if both my legs were game”
Mystique and Aura, Saucy things
Each dancing at a pole
As Derek with his broken hand
drove a single through the hole.
Pettite our left handed ace
Dealt his greatest game
Glaring out beneath his cap-
His hate for batters plain.
The autumn sky had turned to black
When Mo entered the game
The Sandman tune was soon drowned out
By the faithful who remain.
Robert Merrill sang, and then Kate Smith sang
Then Sinatra one last time
Singers for the requiem
Living need not apply!
The Ghosts of Ruth and Gehrig sat
Up in Tier 35
And wiped tears from translucent cheeks
As the music died
“I wonder if we’ll feel the pain
When they wield the wrecking ball
I wonder if our hearts will break
When they breech the wall.”
“Fear not, dear friend, the Stadium’s end
For if steel and concrete fall
The Stadium lives in our hearts
Whenever we recall.”
The fans left standing in the street
On River Avenue
These corporate types in Luxury suites
Have little thought for you
Our paradise is lost tonight
Our little patch of green
But what a life we lived in there
The greatness we have seen.

The Music Festival
The beat of the music goes THUD! THUD! THUD!
As revellers dance around, ankle deep, in thick, gooey mud.
Bedecked in waterproofs and their designer Wellington boots,
The festival goers are all having themselves a right old hoot.
Famous bands have been booked to headline.
The organisers pray that the weather stays fine.
Revellers of every age – both young and old,
Are wrapped up against the wild wind, so cold.
The fans sway from side to side and wave their hands,
As they sing along at the tops of their voices to the bands.
Some fans are here to see their favourite bands in the flesh,
While others want to check out talent, that’s new and fresh.
Despite the mud, there’s a smile on every face
Of the fans who, each year, flock to this place.
Some girls wear pretty flowers in their hair.
At their heroes on stage, they stand and stare.
The singer on stage, stands and sings famous hit after hit,
As the drummer behind him, bashes away on the drum kit.
Heard are the strains of electro-acoustic and bass guitars.
To be here, many bands and their fans have travelled far.
Everyone really looks forward to this wonderful weekend,
When they can listen to wicked sounds and make new friends.
Fans sing along at the top of the voices, until they croak.
The rain falls down again, and the poor fans get soaked.
Everyone is feeling happy and spirits are riding really high,
Despite the fact, not a single fan has managed to stay very dry.
Girls jump up and down and wildly scream.
Their perfectly made-up faces excitedly beam.
As evening falls and we head on into the inky night,
Mobile phones are held aloft and there’s a sea of light.
By the end of the night, everyone’s feeling drained,
But they’ll return tomorrow, ready to do it all again!

My soccer team
I see men standing next to each other
in a line
and they wear yellow and green.
The national anthem plays
and its like nobody honours it
or know the words,
but maybe they are caught by the great moment.
The whistle blows
and the ball is kicked to and fro
and there are men attacking
and others that defend.
The goal is open
and the ball flies past in a wide arc
and it’s as if my team
can’t score any goal.
The opponents have the ball
and shoot it right over the field
and one of their front players
hits it with his head.
The ball flies twisting
and with a swing in the air
and is accurately aimed at the goal
As from the ground
the goalie rises
and the onlookers are silent
and just before it’s too late,
the ball is caught
and the crowd cheers.
It is as if something sweeps into
the men with yellow and green
and they play perfectly,
like only a good team can.
There’s passion to win
and the ball is passed
from player to player
and a mighty kick,
launches it accurately past the goalkeeper
to get entangled in the net.
The crowd cheers and go nuts
and vuvezelas are blowing
and flags are swept to and thro
and the players grab each other.

The Lambeau Effect
Green Bay, Titletown, Lambeau Field, the Packers
fan or not the experience is breathe taking
People from all over the country, some oversea
come to enjoy the long traditions and magic
Tailgaters everywhere, Grills a fire
Strangers talking as friends, chatting last week's game
Brats, Hamburgers, steaks sizzling
the beer in the coolers chillin, the soda & booze fizzling
beans bags tossing, Music blasting tunes
Women dancing, Guys laughing
flags flying, Green and gold flowing everywhere
the proud partiers showing their pride
stands and Bands surround the Sacred land
the bars full of crazy fun fans
the costume they wear so unique, From the Bishop to the Hulk
war paint on, warmed up for the frozen tundra
the pregame rituals, praying to the football gods
beer salutes for a championship, nothing no less
These fans win or lose treat strangers as one of them
cheering, laughing, crying, praying all during the game
the roar of the crowd flows all over town
the streets so deserted, not a creature moving during game time
The anthem being sung, the jets roaring by, a salute to America
the coin flip and the kick off sends the crowd a frenzy
the roar of cheers and boos echo in the air
Score and the player leaps to the stands
the big jump their own way, Lambeau Leap style
the hugs and cheers for the soldier of score.
Smiles all around, cameras flashing
a experience no other place comes close to
Green Bay the heavens of football
the traditions and standards everyone enjoys
win or lose loyal as they get
go my friend, fan or not, you will be surprise
its a lifetime of memories and the experience never changes
go now and experience the Lambeau Effect
for it is worth the hype, football's heaven

Mr Sandman Lullaby
Go to sleep my child
and when you close your eyes,
Mr Sandman will call
while your sleepy head
heads for the field of your dreams
under a never-ending sun.
There you will play
the whole night through.
Go to sleep my child
and when you close your eyes,
Mr Sandman will call.
Once again, you will chase butterflies
across the field of your dreams,
laugh and sing
and no crying among your tears.
Just go to sleep my child
and when you close your eyes,
Mr Sandman will call.
A new day awaits you
on the other side of your dreams
as bight and sunny
as you want it to be.
Now hushaby, hushaby
and close those sleepy eyes.

Dance Off At The Cottage
What a night it was, I was at the Cottage.
I see him dancing all by himself,
Why who is it? It’s none other than Mouse.
Mouse is in the house!
So I go up to Andy and say,
Hey, I’m going to dance Mouse off the stage.
Then Andy gives me a wink,
I go to my friends who give me a drink.
I go to the D.J. and request,
Play Michael Jackson, who is the best.
Then the music begins to play,
I take my shoes off for they get in the way.
The floor is cold for it is brick,
I don’t care, I jump and kick.
Balloons begin to come my way,
Women starts taking pictures and laughing real gay.
Everyone is screaming, it is so much fun,
I dance around Mouse who is the one.
The one I have chosen,
Chosen to dance off the stage,
He finally leaves, and I still dance away.
It was a fun night I do say.
Thanks Mouse for being there to play.

Friday Night Lights (A Tribute To David Edwards)
Football in Texas is like Basketball in the Hoosier State,
For D.B. David Edwards in a game against Austin Westlake,
A junior at San Antonio Madison a collision sealed his fate,
Going for an interception was it early or just a little too late?
His neck was broken as high school foes reached for the pass,
A seasoned player it wasn't the first, who thought it'd be his last,
This is the game of football it's not the war in a place called Iraq,
The worst that could ever come of this is a contusion on your back.
Occurring during a playoff game, November in the year of our Lord 2003,
An offensive play happening many, many times before fans routinely see,
Opposing quarterback scans the field then proceeds with a mighty heave,
Come on Dave get up, what's that, he can't move this is hard to believe.
A television director and producer in the stands was a man named Peter Berg,
So moved by the incident he used his God given talent of writing some words,
Now a weekly series on NBC about friends, family, coaches, kids who played,
The pilot episode aired in 2006 not a commercial success but the critics raved.
Maybe there wasn't enough lying, back stabbing, cheating, going insane,
Just some hard working teenagers scrambling, playing for love of the game,
Sure there were dreams of attending the best college, a future with the pros,
However, for this young man not even his parents, because only God knows.
David Edwards had been stricken with pneumonia sometime late last year,
The amount of suffering probably never drowned out by the rivers of tears,
Not by the football player yet they're shed by a multitude of helpless friends,
From innocent courage of a soldier because his short lived season has to end.
Slipping into an irreversible coma this Monday his life started to cease,
Permanent residence in what is known as Methodist Hospital Northeast,
It still took another two days before death could finally take him home,
Although no longer of our world the bible assures he will never be alone.
Saturday March 1st,2008 the would be star is to become the age of 21,
However, on Wednesday, February 27 clouds moved in covering up his Sun,
Some might say darkness began over four years ago and it just isn't right,
The game like the television show must go on for, "Friday Night Lights."
Oops! Maybe the message has been lost for the new 2009 season,
Saw the first episode on Friday 1/23/09 and here is the main reason,
Canidate for class president held a rally at school as strippers swayed,
Her main platform was a cool prom and a good chance for getting laid.
The new principal wanted money raised by boosters for a jumbo-tron,
Used for academics because that's where it's needed & she's a mom,
With a belief her new role is more about education not a football team,
So the entire school could have an opportunity to pursue their dreams.
Friday Night Lights and a late start for the show, season number four,
East Dillon High but the writers did not transfer, will there be more?
Unless there's a download of quality material it's time to shed tears,
High School Football is about pride, not having sex & drinking beer.
Originally about a player's enthusiasm, while eventually cost his life,
Now it's about the coach, two daughters, the principal who's his wife,
A couple of star players from very different racial sides of the tracks,
6/11/10 playing the #1 team, stands are half full, chance to tie, sacked.
Yes! In this country there is a dividing line of color, that is a true fact,
But African Americans aren't the only nationality strung out on crack,
Black athletes steal wallets and cars, is this stereotype message right?
It's about a community brought together through Friday Night Lights.
What happened & why, at the start the series was critically acclaimed,
We waited in anticipation, who'd do what, even knew players names,
So what about a music festival in Austin, young lovers, Julie and Matt?
Commercials are almost long as the show, why bother to bring it back?
It's true the original movie had lots of drinking, showed plenty of skin,
However, that was a one time deal, the series is week out and week in,
Not all football programs deal with rally girls or who's screwing who,
As, first & foremost education is the main reason for attending school.

Faded Photographs
Some pictures hang upon my wall
Of baseball players from the past-
Gionfriddo’s catch of DiMaggio’s ball-
Lou Gehrig standing at the mike-
Babe Ruth pitching in the Bronx-
And the one place that links them all.
They happened at the lumberyard
The place on River Avenue
The place where Bombers came to play
Now sad, diminished, and by Fall-
a victim of the wrecking ball.
One other theme is intertwined
Within the pictures on my wall
Each enshrines the final time
These men enjoyed a curtain call..
Babe was pitching his last time
The season ender (33’)
He never pitched another game
A complete game shutout
Against the Sox.
Gehrig speaking at the mike
A hot July 4th holiday
At home plate for the final time
He stood on the unaccustomed side
Gionfriddo’s speed won the game
By making his miraculous catch
But next day he sat on the bench
And never played a game again
How bittersweet these moments are
for a scrub or a superstar
To know, at last, you’ve reached the end
To still have done the best you can.
Their time has passed, these men have died
And now their park has seen its day
I’ve only photographs to show
Perfection never fades away.

Jokers aint stoppin til the mornin, so
(tra-knox)
Every, everybody come feel this
This union, this spirit
Created from the soul, oh yeah
Its big will (who else)
And tra-knox keepin it real
Tearing up the club
We got what you want
So you cannot front
Everybody get on the floor
(will smith)
Yo, yo, yo, yo, yo, we aint stoppin til the mornin
Me and tra-knox keep, keepin it on and (we keep, keepin it on and)
[chorus tra-knox and (will smith)]
Its all night, and its all right, til the sunlight
(this is how da beat goes on)
Big will, tra-knox, so hot
(this is how da beat goes on)
Poppin, rockin, and stompin
(this is how da beat goes on)
Big will, tra-knox, so hot
(this is how da beat goes on)
(verse 3 - will smith)
A hip hop superhero, a widow, cape or a suit
Hit the studio every year or so, and escape with the loot
On my down time straight to the links
I could pack a dance floor, a movie theatre or truck from brinks
On christmas, mom and wife douse em with ice
Aol, search will smith thousands of sites
And at the club, hands clappin toes tappin
Sucka Im the greatest thing ever happen to rappin
Best shape of my life destined to show ya
No scrapes or fender benders lead the game total
Free, dont move hip hop mogul
Philly aint happy i, I be the guy to go
The guy to go, you know the go to guy
The mega man that got the whole crew like
Damn will den done did it again
He done stepped up to the plate and he done hit it again
Yo get them hands up
(tra-knox)
Throw your hands up
Wave em like you dont care
You like the sound then
Then let me hear you say
[chorus tra-knox and (will smith)]
Its all night, and its all right, til the sunlight
(this is how da beat goes on)
Big will, tra-knox, so hot
(this is how da beat goes on)
Poppin, rockin, and stompin
(this is how da beat goes on)
Big will, tra-knox, so hot
(this is how da beat goes on)

The one game we all play
The one game we all play
We play games
To show our valour
And mainly to win
We do not mind going for coaching
If we feel we do not have the
Required strength to win
We play games
Either as a team or individual
The attempt is to demonstrate
That we are better talented
Than the team or member
Against whom we play
Nations enthuse people to play games
So that they add pride
Some games are played with
Gadgets and protective accessories
We have spectators to watch
The way we play
We have umpires and referees
Who ensure rules of the games
Are strictly adhered
And it is all a fair play
We play games indoor or outdoor
We play games in daylight
Or under artificial illumination
We score while playing
And the score achieved by a team or individual
In a specific time
Decides the winner
We telecast the games
We comment on the strengths and weaknesses
Of a team or individual
We conduct national and international
Tournaments to declare a team or individual
As champion
Irrespective of skills, race, gender
We all play a game
Which is played mainly to lose
It is an individual game
With no specific rules
With no umpire
With no spectator
With no commentator
With no TV coverage
With no scores
With no trophies
With no victory stands
With no top scorer
With no “player of the match”
But we play
Most of us like to play this game
Indoor and in closed doors
Decency and civilized ways
Do not allow this game being played in the open
There is no season for this game
It can be played any part of the day
And any part of the year
Summer, winter, monsoon seasons
Have no bearing on this game
The one requirement in this game is
Complete transparency and intimacy
Rules for this game
Vary from individual to individual
Rules also get refined
With the experience of the players
There are no restrictions to employ
Any method as both the players
Are determined to be the loser
Duration of play depends again
On the individuals
The game ends
Most often to the satisfaction
Of the both the players
In other games players declare
That they are retiring from playing
There is no retirement in this game
As players advance in age
They understand it is more a mind game
Outcome of this game
Are further more players
You guessed it right
It is the game of love

Football fans are so fickle
I love my football
always have
and always will.
But I moan over prices
rather stand than sit
but still buy a season ticket.
I slag off our players
but clap and cheer
when they score
I'm a two faced fan.
Say to my mate
I'm not coming anymore
but I'm there the next game.
Join in shouting at the referee
calling him obscene names
but secretly thinking he's spot on.
Jolly banter with the away fans
in the pub before the games
but dislike them all inside the ground.
Us football fans are all the same
only happy when we are winning
but miserable when we're not.
Is fickleness contagious?
widespread at football grounds?
common only to the football fan?
