John Dryden

Prologue to the True Widow

Heaven save ye, gallants, and this hopeful age!
Y' are welcome to the downfall of the stage.
The fools have laboured long in their vocation,
And vice, the manufacture of the nation,
O'erstocks the town so much, and thrives so well,
That fops and knaves grow drugs, and will not sell.
In vain our wares on theatres are shown,
When each has a plantation of his own.
His cruse ne'er fails; for whatsoe'er he spends,
There's still God's plenty for himself and friends.
Should men be rated by poetic rules,
Lord, what a poll would there be raised from fools!
Meantime poor wit prohibited must lie,
As if 'twere made some French commodity.
Fools you will have, and raised at vast expense;
And yet, as soon as seen, they give offence.
Time was, when none would cry,—That oaf was me;
But now you strive about your pedigree.
Bauble and cap no sooner are thrown down,
But there's a muss of more than half the town.
Each one will challenge a child's part at least;
A sign the family is well increased.
Of foreign cattle there's no longer need,
When we're supplied so fast with English breed.
Well! flourish, countrymen; drink, swear, and roar;
Let every free-born subject keep his whore,
And wandering in the wilderness about,
At end of forty years not wear her out.
But when you see these pictures, let none dare
To own beyond a limb, or single share;
For where the punk is common, he's a sot,
Who needs will father what the parish got.

Ship Of Fools

Hello europe here we are, everything is easy
Lets cross the border without stop
Italian pasta mixed with fine french wine would be great
My stomach knows no state
Blond girls from sweden
And if thats garden of eden
I think thats o.k.
Turkish dope found a license of the pope
Dont think thats the only way.
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools
Allright!
Belgium beer with a jgermeister-deer
Thats why we here, I think this ones not for you
And swiss francs brought to polish banks
Thats life! a hard bone to chew
I dont want no austrians be instructors
In my home I guess theres something better
Spanish guitars combined with twenty german tubas
That wont work but it really doesnt matter
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools...
Allright!
Hey, hey!
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools cheers!
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools just watch it!
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a drink in a ship of fools
Europe, europe rules!
Lets have a sink in a ship of fools
A shipper of a ship of fools, what part is that?
Europe rules, europe rules
Europe rules, watch your fools!

Prologue To Steele's Tender Husband

In the first rise and infancy of farce,
When fools were many, and when plays were scarce
The raw unpractis'd authors could, with ease,
A young and unexperienc'd audience please:
No single character had e'er been shown,
But the whole herd of fops was all their own;
Rich in originals, they set to view,
In every piece, a coxcomb that was new.
But now our British theatre can boast
Drolls of all kinds, a vast unthinking host!

Fruitful of folly and of vice, it shows
Cuckolds, and cits, and bawds, and pimps, and beaux;
Rough country knights are found of every shire;
Of every fashion gentle fops appear;
And punks of different characters we meet,
As frequent on the stage as in the pit.
Our modern wits are forc'd to pick and cull,
And here and there by chance glean up a fool:
Long ere they find the necessary spark,
They search the town, and beat about the Park,

To all his most frequented haunts resort,
Oft dog him to the ring, and oft to court;
As love of pleasure or of place invites;
And sometimes catch him taking snuff at White's
Howe'er, to do you right, the present age
Breeds very hopeful monsters for the stage;
That scorn the paths their dull forefather's trod,
And won't be blockheads in the common road.
Do but survey this crouded house tonight:
--Here's still encouragement for those that write.

Our author, to divert his friends to-day,
Stocks with variety of fools his play;
And that there may be something gay and new,
Two ladies-errant has expos'd to view;
The first a damsel, travel'd in romance;
The t'other more refin'd, she comes from France:
Rescue, like courteous knights, the nymph from danger,
And kindly treat, like well-bred men, the stranger.

Ship Of Fools

Went to see the captain, strangest I could find,
Laid my proposition down, laid it on the line.
I wont slave for beggars pay, likewise gold and jewels,
But I would slave to learn the way to sink your ship of fools.
Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.
Saw your first ship sink and drown, from rockin of the boat,
And all that could not sink or swim was just left there to float.
I wont leave you drifting down, but woh it makes me wild,
With thirty years upon my head to have you call me child.
Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.
The bottles stand as empty, as they were filled before.
Time there was and plenty, but from that cup no more.
Though I could not caution all, I still might warn a few:
Dont lend your hand to raise no flag atop no ship of fools.
Ship of fools on a cruel sea, ship of fools sail away from me.
It was later than I thought, when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.
It was later than I thought when I first believed you,
Now I cannot share your laughter, ship of fools.

Prologue Spoken at the Opening of The New House, March 26, 1674

A plain-built house, after so long a stay,
Will send you half unsatisfied away;
When, fallen from your expected pomp, you find
A bare convenience only is designed.
You, who each day can theatres behold,
Like Nero's palace, shining all with gold,
Our mean ungilded stage will scorn, we fear,
And, for the homely room, disdain the cheer.
Yet now cheap druggets to a mode are grown,
And a plain suit, since we can make but one,
Is better than to be by tarnished gawdry known.
They, who are by your favours wealthy made,
With mighty sums may carry on the trade;
We, broken bankers, half destroyed by fire,
With our small stock to humble roofs retire;
Pity our loss, while you their pomp admire.
For fame and honour we no longer strive;
We yield in both, and only beg—to live;
Unable to support their vast expense,
Who build and treat with such magnificence,
That, like the ambitious monarchs of the age,
They give the law to our provincial stage.
Great neighbours enviously promote excess,
While they impose their splendour on the less;
But only fools, and they of vast estate,
The extremity of modes will imitate,
The dangling knee-fringe, and the bib-cravat.
Yet if some pride with want may be allowed,
We in our plainness may be justly proud;
Our Royal Master willed it should be so;
Whate 'er he's pleased to own, can need no show:
That sacred name gives ornament and grace,
And, like his stamp, makes basest metal pass.
'Twere folly now a stately pile to raise,
To build a playhouse while you throw down plays;
While scenes, machines, and empty operas reign,
And for the pencil you the pen disdain;
While troops of famished Frenchmen hither drive,
And laugh at those upon whose alms they live:
Old English authors vanish, and give place
To these new conquerors of the Norman race.
More tamely than your fathers you submit;
You're now grown vassals to them in your wit.
Mark, when they play, how our fine fops advance
The mighty merits of their men of France,
Keep time, cry Ben! and humour the cadence.
Well, please yourselves; but sure 'tis understood,
That French machines have ne'er done England good.
I would not prophesy our house's fate;
But while vain shows and scenes you overrate,
'Tis to be feared—
That, as a fire the former house o'erthrew,
Machines and tempests will destroy the new.

Deciver Of Fools

He told the tale so many times
About the dream not meant to be
In a world of the free
He plays with your mind
As faith for the future faded fast
He grows strong with their displeasure
It sets him free
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules with fear
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules again
He feeds on fear
Poisons the truth
To gain their faith
To lead the way
To a world of decay
He rules your heart
He will sell your soul to the grave
No hesitation he'll make
He belongs to the dark
Please awake
And see the truth
He can only be
If you believe what he tells you
Remember who you are
What you stand for
And there will always be a way
In my heart there is a place
In my heart there is a trace
Of a small fire burning
A sheltering ray shines through this night
Although it 's small, it's bright
But darkness is lurking
He will sell your soul to bitterness and cold
Fear him
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
He rules with fear
Deceiver of hearts
Deceiver of fools
Shall he rule again?

Fools Get Lucky

Music by: Barry Manilow
Lyrics by: John Bettis
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I see you lying there
Like a living answered prayer
There are no words
For what I feel for you
My life was once a high trapeze
You pulled me down
And gave me peace
That's something no one else
Could ever do
And on nights like tonight
It scares me recalling
How close I came to falling
But fools get lucky
Fortune must like me
When people ask where you came from
I tell them
Fools get lucky
Destiny likes me
It must be one of nature's rules
Love like yours
Should save the fools like me
When I see the good times shine
On this wayward life of mine
I tell the world
It's all because of you
And fools get lucky
Fortune must like me
When people ask where you came from
I tell them
Fools get lucky
Destiny likes me
It must be one of nature's rules
Love like yours
Should save the fools like me

Sonnet XXII: With Fools and Children

To Folly

With fools and children, good discretion bears;
Then, honest people, bear with Love and me,
Nor older yet, nor wiser made by years,
Amongst the rest of fools and children be;
Love, still a baby, plays with gauds and toys,
And, like a wanton, sports with every feather,
And idiots still are running after boys,
Then fools and children fitt'st to go together.
He still as young as when he first was born,
No wiser I than when as young as he;
You that behold us, laugh us not to scorn;
Give Nature thanks you are not such as we.
Yet fools and children sometimes tell in play
Some, wise in show, more fools indeed than they.

Mob Rules

Close the city and tell the people that somethings coming to call
Death and darkness are rushing forward to take a bite from the wall, oh
Youve nothing to say
Theyre breaking away
If you listen to fools...
The mob rules
The mob rules
Kill the spirit and youll be blinded, the end is always the same
Play with fire, you burn your fingers and lose your hold of the flame, oh
Its over, its done
The end is begun
If you listen to fools...
The mob rules
Youve nothing to say
Oh, theyre breaking away
If you listen to fools...
Break the circle and stop the movement, the wheel is thrown to the ground
Just remember it might start rolling and take you right back around
Youre all fools!
The mob rules!

Fools haven

The haven of fools
This is the haven fools
Fools do not like greatness
So they hate to progress
Fools lack wisdom
They are far from freedom
Their heart attaineth riches
But they don't have riches
Fools will perish
But the upright will flourish
He will nourish
Has anybody seen
The end of the foolish
Think for wisdom excelleth folly
Whom will you like to be
The end of the upright
Is everlasting life
Like a tree
Planted by the river side
Marry it, let it be your bride
Keep it as your pride
Do away with ignorant
For the truth is important
Fools has pleasure in vanity
But the happiness
Of the wise is in eternity

Fools In Love

Fools in love, well are there any other kind of lovers?
Fools in love, is there any other kind of pain?
Everything you do, everywhere you go now
Everything you touch, everything you feel
Everything you see, everything you know now
Everything you do, you do it for your lady
Love your lady, love your lady
Love your lady, love...
Fools in love, are there any creatures more pathetic?
Fools in love, never knowing when theyve lost the game
Everything you do, everywhere you go now
Everything you touch, everything you feel
Everything you see, everything you know now
Everything you do, you do it for your lady
Love your lady, love your lady
Love your lady, love...
Fools in love they think theyre heroes
cause they get to feel no pain
I say fools in love are zeros
I should know, I should know
Because this fools in love again
Fools in love, gently hold each others hands forever
Fools in love, gently tear each other limb from limb
Everything you do, everywhere you go now
Everything you touch, everything you feel
Everything you do, even your rock n roll now
Nothing mean a thing except you and your lady
Love your lady, love your lady
Love your lady, love...
Fools in love they think theyre heroes
cause they get to feel no pain
I say fools in love are zeros
I should know, I should know
Because this fools in love again

Desperate Fools

(eric carmen)
Ive been up too high
Ive been down too low
Ive been searchin for somethin
With nowhere to go
Thought Id make it alone
But Im so far from home
In a town full of desperate fools
Oh, the sun beats down
On the l.a. scene
But you cant feel the cold
When the grass looks so green
And the games that Ive played
Were not wort what I paid
In a town full of desperate fools
Ive been takin my life
One day at a time
Tryin to piece it all together
But I know in my mind
That Im startin to be
What they want me to be
And I wonder sometimes
Whats becoming of me
Ive been takin my life
One day at a time
Tryin to piece it all together
But I know in my mind
That Im startin to be
What they want me to be
And I wonder sometimes
Whats becoming of me
cause Ive been up too high
Ive been down too low
Ive been searchin for somethin
With nowhere to go
And I suppose its been fun
But I guess Im just one
In a town full of desperate fools
A town full of desperate fools

Half Breed

My father married a Cherokee
My mother's people were ashamed of me
The Indian's said that I was white by law
The white man always called me Indian Squaw
Half breed
Is all I ever heard
Half breed
Let me hate the word
Half breed
She's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born
We never settled went from town to town
When you're not welcome you don't hang around
The other children always laughed at me
Give her a feather she's a Cherokee
Half breed
Is all I ever heard
Half breed
Let me hate the word
Half breed
She's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born
We weren't accepted and I felt the shame
Fifteen I left and tell me whose to blame
My life since then has been from man to man
But I can't run away from what I am
Half breed
Is all I ever heard
Half breed
Let me hate the word
Half breed
She's no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

Fools Gold

In the year of the famine
When starvation and black death raged across the land
There were many driven by their hunger
To set sail for the americas
In search of a new life and a new hope
Oh but there were some who couldnt cope
And they spent their life
In search of fools gold
The old prospector
He makes it to the four lane highway
His old compadre
Lies dead in the sand
With outstretched hands
He cries, are you going my way?
The people passing by dont seem to understand
The curse of fools gold
Broken joe just lying in a gutter
Hes gone as low as any man can be
He calls for wine but theyll only serve him water
The bartender say we dont sell sympathy
He tells a strange story
About his father
How sunday mornings theyd go down
To the church on the corner
As time grows older
His thoughts they grow younger
It is his wish
To search no longer for fools gold
The vulture sits on top
Of the big top circus arena
Hes seen this show before
Knows someone is going to fall
Just near the part
Where the beautiful dancing tightrope ballerine
Forgets that the safety net
Isnt there at all
Down he swoops with claws drawn to take her
Razor sharp so savagely is she mauled
Oh my god, is there no one who can save her?
In steps the fox to thunderous applause
Fools gold

Devoted and Truer Fools

Those who 'use' to be the ones,
Depicted as fools.
With a diminishing done,
To any influence they might have had...
Have not been the fools,
Many were led to believe.
With a choice to ruin their integrity!

It seems those fools,
Had always worn tailored made suits.
And deceived with fake impressions.
Diluting those minds without a conscious.

And it seems as though,
Those who have followed the ones...
Impressing with dress and promises,
Have been made devoted and truer fools.
And today they know this.

A fool's game

It was a fool's game that should not begin
And you played it without honest rules
If you thought that you will always win
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools

If you thought that you can get me easy
And you tried to do this without honest rules
If you thought that my way to be is sleazy
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools

If you thought that you can hunt me slowly
And you danced this without honest rules
If you thought that I will love you only
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools

It was a morbid dance without real feelings
A dance of wishes without honest rules
If you thought that love means mutual dealings
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools

If you thought that you will be a winer
In this love fight without honest rules
If you thought I'm a cake at your dinner
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools

And if you thought you can get everything
In this world of yours without honest rules
If you thought that I'm an easy stupid thing
Well it's wrong 'cause it's a game for fools.

The Shinning

Theres a man who sees all there is to see
What the future holds for all
As the days grow dark as his sole and final warning
Beware of the one with invisible friends they will steal into your mind
And all too soon the signs begin to show-oh
Rise up to the shinin
Live long live now-ow
Rise up to the shinin
Dont be blind by fools again
Fools again
As the page is turned and the storys told on the visions he had seen
The house on the hill with the haunted eyes that call
No one laughed as madness came out (out out) to play its game
If you stay too long youll finally go insane, now
Rise up to the shining
Live long live now-ow
Rise up to the shining
Dont be blind by fools again
Fools again
Bells will take their toll on your way out
Theres no way were born to shine before our time
All your life, youre on your own
Lonely road lost in a time
Let the light lead your way to the golden throne,
Its the only way
Rise up to the shinin
Live long live now-ow
Rise up to the shinin
Dont be blind by fools again
Rise up to the shinin
Live long live now-ow
Rise up the shinin
Dont be blind by fools again
Oh rise up to the shinin
Wise up, theyre gonna steal your mind
Rise up the house is gonna haunt you!
No one laughed, no one cried
Oh oh ahh-ahh yeah

To release one’s hate

The wise are as much fools
To fools as fools are to them.
A man is as much irrational
To a child as it is to him.
A male is as much a stress
To woman as she is to him.
Each treats the other so
Just to release one’s hate.

A Fool's Litany

When a youth they said I was uncouth, but they were wrong about me.
The world was in error as I could plainly see.
When I disagreed I did not heed whether friend, teacher or such.
I knew more than they in every way. I was better by so much.

Now I'm an adult and richer than all those poor, useless fools
Who make up a stagnant middle class where no one rules.
I seek more money so I and others in my chosen class
Can transform these non producers into a pile of broken glass.
Only then will this country regain the power it needs;
Rules not from middle class fools, but a selected, special breed.

100 Nights

(music: marillion lyrics: steve hogarth)
A hundred nights of fun and games
A thousand empty glasses
I feel it change and stay the same
As each day passes
They invite me to their gatherings
In the finer parts of town
They seem attracted to my indifference
The irony just knocks me out
And I love them as if I love them
And they reciprocate with help
But I look up at these mirrors sometimes
Oh, and I cant see myself
They say that some are born to burn
And some are born to give
They say that people live and learn
Some people only live and live
You dont know that I come here
If you did you would know why
So we close our eyes
You didnt notice me
As I passed you on the stairs
How could you ever guess lookin at my face
How closely I share your taste
How well I know your place
Even the clothes you wear
Ive seen them when youre not there
You say that you can win win win
If you know how to play the game
But while youre out there playing you see
Theres something you should know
She spends your money
She spends your money
She spends your money
She spends your money on me
This town has turned me into what I have become
This town dresses you up like a stranger
This town hangs around in the doorway and tells me Im late
This town takes us down, takes us down
I feel like Im losing you to this town
