No Defeat On Love

Stillness called me here
where bitter stars are few.
From shadow to shadow
the night is yours.
Senses sharpen,
faint galaxies approach
attentive and glistening,
invisible wings beat overhead
across this darkening loch
as castle lights fall dim
and fell the walls of time
to give us this stage again
under spotlights
of endless possibility.
Or so we might have thought
had we been older,
for innocence is blind,
groping in vain for us now.
But in the embrace of your night
regret holds no dominion.

The sweetest comfort reigns
in the aftermath of a love
woven not by chance
or by choice alone,
but for you and I to win or lose.
For nowhere is it written
that such and such must be.
And though moves may be forced
by history unfolding,
the end remains unknown
until it flies or falls.

Yet even this parting and its taint
inflicted no defeat on memory,
no defeat on love.
In the beginning
it was the little things;
In the end
it was everything.
Losing it is beyond me now.
And here,
where something of us plays on,
by the light of the indefinable
by the flowing depths
of the unwitting wisdom
of this heretical universe
I am thankful.

Standing In The Shadow

(coverdale)
Im running away from a feeling
Hiding my face in the sand
Im scared to love and lose again
I dont know if I can
I dont need the night to remind me
Where the lonely people go
I try running away from love
But, my heart keeps telling me no
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow
Standing in the shadow of love
Ive been living so long in the darkness
I know the cold embrace of the night,
When morning comes I close my eyes
cos Im blinded with the light
Taking a chance of a feeling
Is like waiting for a flower to grow,
So I stand at the crossroad, baby,
Wondering which way to go
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow.
Standing in the shadow of love
Im running away from a feeling,
Hiding my face in the sand
Im scared to love and lose again
I dont know if I can
I dont need the night to remind me
Where the lonely people go
I try running away from love
But, my heart keeps telling me no
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love,
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow,
Standing in the shadow of love...

Pablo Neruda

Tie Your Heart At Night To Mine, Love,

Tie your heart at night to mine, love,
and both will defeat the darkness
like twin drums beating in the forest
against the heavy wall of wet leaves.

Night crossing: black coal of dream
that cuts the thread of earthly orbs
with the punctuality of a headlong train
that pulls cold stone and shadow endlessly.

Love, because of it, tie me to a purer movement,
to the grip on life that beats in your breast,
with the wings of a submerged swan,

So that our dream might reply
to the sky's questioning stars
with one key, one door closed to shadow.

The Card-Dealer

Could you not drink her gaze like wine?
Yet though its splendour swoon
Into the silence languidly
As a tune into a tune,
Those eyes unravel the coiled night
And know the stars at noon.
The gold that's heaped beside her hand,
In truth rich prize it were;
And rich the dreams that wreathe her brows
With magic stillness there;
And he were rich who should unwind
That woven golden hair.
Around her, where she sits, the dance
Now breathes its eager heat;
And not more lightly or more true
Fall there the dancers' feet
Than fall her cards on the bright board
As 'twere a heart that beat.
Her fingers let them softly through,
Smooth polished silent things;
And each one as it falls reflects
In swift light-shadowings,
Blood-red and purple, green and blue,
The great eyes of her rings.
Whom plays she with? With thee, who lov'st
Those gems upon her hand;
With me, who search her secret brows;
With all men, bless'd or bann'd.
We play together, she and we,
Within a vain strange land:
A land without any order,—
Day even as night, (one saith,)—
Where who lieth down ariseth not
Nor the sleeper awakeneth;
A land of darkness as darkness itself
And of the shadow of death.
What be her cards, you ask? Even these:—
The heart, that doth but crave
More, having fed; the diamond,
Skilled to make base seem brave;
The club, for smiting in the dark;
The spade, to dig a grave.
And do you ask what game she plays?
With me 'tis lost or won;
With thee it is playing still; with him
It is not well begun;
But 'tis a game she plays with all
Beneath the sway o' the sun.
Thou seest the card that falls,—she knows
The card that followeth:
Her game in thy tongue is called Life,
As ebbs thy daily breath:
When she shall speak, thou'lt learn her tongue
And know she calls it Death.

Love In Vain

Long night, too long and lonely
Laying there asking myself
Hey, what's going on with you and me
How could I be so unaware
So blind I could not see
Knowing you'd be there
And always would be
Is anyone to blame but me
I've been so concerned with myself
Now I need you desperately
If you've fallen for another
Let's be honest with each other
Is there still a chance
And maybe hope to save our romance
We can't be strangers
You mean too much to me
I won't let this be a love in vain
Don't want the loneliness
Of just a memory
I don't want a love in vain
Just one more night, I want to spend with you
We'll let our hearts do the talking
Like we used to do
We'll make our first kiss last forever
Put the pieces back together
'Cause there's still a chance
There may be hope to save our romance
We can't be strangers
You mean to much to me
I won't let this be a love in vain, don't want a love in vain
I don't want the loneliness
Of just a memory
Don't want a love in vain
Oh, woman look what you've done to me
I'll show you how this love should be
Don't let it be a love in vain
Please don't, don't you know
You got my heart on a string
Don't let go
Don't let this love be a love in vain
We can't be strangers
It's not our destiny
I won't let this be a love in vain, don't want a love in vain
Don't want the loneliness
Of just a memory
Don't let this be a love in vain

Musing In The Aftermath

Everything sings, the shadows of the winter branches against the streetlamp
laced on the windowpane ribboned by dirt, backddoors and rooftops
and yet I am enveloped in this silence without wings, this voice
that valleys the universe like a dropp of water down the spine of a leaf
to the root of no flower, no heart, no simple mystery of the night
maturing into stars. I’m in a room with books, paintings, lamps,
plants, computers, easels and cats. Things are neither right nor wrong
though I flatter myself that I have grown from mistake to mistake,
defeat to defeat and cloak the sum of all my failures
in the unconvincing authority of experience.
It’s rude to take your masks off in the light.
I try to see myself in the darkness like a star
with too much to say that loves to give its hiding place away. Forgive
this indiscretion of my solitude, but my name has obligations
and there’s nothing in the house to eat but swans.
Soon enough there’ll be a term to all these spectral visions
that add their shadows to the lead migrations of my thought
and traverse the motionless deserts of the skull-faced moon.
And what can I say to the pilgrims who come to visit my heart,
all these lean feelings without deceit or art
who crowd around the miracle like damaged mystics and moths
hoping their agony will be immolated in the serene ferocity of the void?
Space is only the rough draft of my emptiness
and ghosts confer in the wings like uninspired actors or lie detectors trying to interpret the crimes of my last passion play. Before I was born
to cross the sky in a blue coffin with a black rose
among all these islands of light, I was the ashes of a bird
in the cold furnace of my life, a jest of the indifferent wind
that toys with the lamp and candle of my seeing.
Now, in every word, among a hundred million burning stars,
it’s enough to watch a vagrant firefly, a constellation of one
blind the universe in a single flash with marvel
as I slide down the helical bannisters of every descending starwell
toward the dark by which the dark is known.
Together with everyone I heed the mystery alone
and I don’t know how I got this way
or if I’m a shadow or a wing, the gesture of anything,
but when the moon is in my window, the night arrayed,
musing in the aftermath of life’s homely escapade,
a little afraid, I feel someone dying, and I sing.

My Shadow In Vain

Stroll to the cafe
My God how time flies
I close up my brain
And another friend dies
I feel like a mirror
Feel like nothing is mine
I could go back to crying
But now dying seems fine
So I hang from the ceiling
Or I sit on the air
Or rot in a corner
Until somebody cares
Faces at random
I quote people I knew
Id love to be like me
If I could feel like you
Here am i, more roche five than pain
Here am i, just me and my walls to blame
Here am i, I really dont feel quite sane
Here am i, still searching for my shadow in vain
Lock my door I only think in black and white
Ill even try to look ashamed
Moving out of central
Somebody knows me well
Says hell spill the whole story
He may be lying I cant tell
Meet me inside
Ill keep my head to the floor
And one hand on the handle
Of the mad/sane door
Here am i, more roche five than pain
Here am i, just me and my walls to blame
Here am i, I really dont feel quite sane
Here am i, still searching for my shadow in vain
Lock my door I only think in black and white
Ill even try to look ashamed
My shadow in vain
My shadow in vain
My shadow in vain
My shadow in vain
My shadow in vain...

Wings

We teach each rounded shoulder
holds wings enfolded there -
which, when heart's bare, life colder,
could reach out everywhere.

Don’t wait as passive folder
nor rhyme, nor time to spare
for voice, for choice untold, - a
shadow’s shadow scare.

If wings found speech life bolder
would be, no fears, despair,
no fickle wind sheer, boulder, -
joy’s windfall's waiting where

defeat, aground to moulder,
prepares sound rebound rare.
Remember, when you're older,
to wish swell wings well fair.

Although regrets now smolder
don’t only ‘stand and stare’,
respond, beyond beholder,
reveal concealed spring, flair

which thinks fate’s inks have scrolled a
desire to challenge, dare.
Tomorrow greener, golder,
peels off grief laden layer...

A Shadow Falls

When I see a shadow fall
pale against my bedroom wall
I always look around to see
if that shadow was just me?
If there's no one else in sight
I silently give way to the night
and sleep.

When I see a shadow fall
dark against my bedroom wall,
I'm afraid to look at its dark sight
for if that shadow isn't me
I fear just what that shadow might be.
And so I cannot
fall asleep.

When I see a shadow fall
white against my bedroom wall
I will not look upon that scene
fearing what that shadow might mean.
Maybe a ghost is visiting me
bringing a haunting memory
if I fall asleep.

One and Only One!

I am in peace
At perfect peace with God;
O what a God and peace are!

A narrow dark tunnel I crossed;
To see that vast ocean ahead,
No shores not even
any bright shine,
shineth the self seamless
and endless,
Except the galaxies shine like light worms

This, this indeed is peace.
Is it, peace bestowed on me,
Or by my own effort I attained the peace?
By nature and by practice, peace was too far,
How very far I was from God;
Yet now by grace brought right to Him,
Through faith and mediation.

So beautiful, so very beautiful is God,
I was never nearer be;
For in the person of my own,
He was always with me,
I ran away from him,
Yet, he was with me like my shadow,
May be I ran and ran like shadow of my own,
I am as near as He.
He is as near as me,
So dear, so very dear to God I and all,
More dear I cannot be as you too are dear to him;
The love wherewith His love
now reflects in me and you too,

Such is His love to me and you,
just a touch made me melt and one with vacuum,
Flow into your heart as love divine,
And one with that bright light, all worlds are one,

Why should I ever anxious be,
Why should I be more a being,
Why should I be narrow and small,
When infinite was only one and vanished I in Him,

Since such a God is mine,
O is it true, is he mine or I am his?
I am his is more true
than he is mine,
who has to judge when we are one,

He watches me night and day,
Warns and guards
here and there and Everywhere,
Now I knew about this, he is always there,
And the fool and foolish,
I was never there

As this body and mind sent on a mission impossible,
Only his grace makes,
Even every thing possible,
You are the one my God,
You are the one before infinite zeros
Completing that look infinite,
yet when zero adds to one,
The one remains one and only Lord!

And tells me
'Mine is thine, Thine is mine.
And all that thou possess is mine and
Look you too were not only mine,
But also all are mine,
Pious and sinner alike,
Happy and pain alike,
Beauty and ugly all alike,
Drunken or mad lover all are mine!
You are my own shadow and shadow alone,
Shadow of puppet with I play on,
My own light plays the shadow,
The shadow of puppet on the screen
of my own mind!
Such is my God, only one always one,
One and only one!

The Unknown Star

I was born of an unknown star, of a mother who did not know herself-
From the very beginning I was a canary that could not sing and who
Would fall to the ground every time I lifted my wings to fly-
Trapped inside a cage of my own delusions,
I was alone looking upward towards that clouded sky, searching for that unknown star,
Where by chance I could find a place where I would belong-

My mother wept a wide stream of tears
Not to be consoled from the deep pain that tore at her heart-
The day I lost myself to another world, she abandoned me as agony wrenched her soul-
A phantasmal canary lying still at the bottom of my cage-
Hiding behind a rainbow looking for rays of hope,
Trying to deafen the voices only I could hear,

Searching for that unknown star,
I would dance in the rain beneath the faint light of the moon at night
Seeking for myself, that person I could not find, however
All I could find was a shadow upon the wall-

A shadow upon the wall I hardly recognized as myself,
A reflection within a pond which was that stream of my mother’s tears-
Dancing in the rain trying to become somebody,
Somebody famous or a perhaps an angel or a saint,
Trapped inside a cage of my own apparition where dense cloud cover barred me from
That unknown star where I might feel at home-

Looking about me at hillsides I might have tried to climb-all I could see was my shadow.
A shadow upon a hillside or inside, a shadow upon the wall,
A vague reflection within a pool of tears- Seemingly eyes of a ghost staring into mine,
Reading the demonic thoughts that raced inside of my mind-
Born of an unknown star, I had never found a home and
Born of an unknown star, I had never found myself-
Searching inside and outside all I could ever see was
A dark shadow of a lost person with no destiny or direction-

That canary that could not sing or fly, or perhaps a being who
Tried to come to life dancing in the rain beneath the faint moonlight- I became
A shadow dancing beneath the light of that unknown star I could not reach-
Hoping someday I would save the souls of those who despair and expectantly
Someday I would become that canary, but lifting my wings to fly and bursting into song,
Joyfully watching the sunrise as the moon would vanish
Behind disappearing dark clouds of despair.

What Do You Do When Love Dies

(mary unobsky / donna weiss)
I wake up in the morning crying
I reach out for you, yeah
I make coffee for one now
Instead of for two
My days are so empty baby
Theres nothing for me to do
And the night lost its meaning
The night I lost you
Help me baby
What do you when love dies?
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind
What do you when love dies?
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind
I run for the 1:10 uptown
The show starts at two
Im surrounded by strangers
But Im haunted by you
My life is without direction
Lost without you my love
The past is my shadow
My shadow is you
I aint got nowhere to go
What do you do when love dies?
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind
What do you do when love dies on you?
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind, yes I am, yeah
Yeah, what do you do when love dies on you?
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind, yeah, yeah
Somebody help me, Im losing my mind
The past is my shadow
My shadow is you
Yeah, yeah
What do you do when love dies on you?

Whithin Another Man's Shadow

Is not the same
To be in the Shadow,
Than to be the Shadow itself…
For you can move away from the Shadow
Towards the light
But, the shadows could not do
The same,
For it no longer will be the shadow…

Now it is painful and hard for me
To convince myself
That it is NOT what I thought
It could be…
Worse than anything else,
Is to share another man's shadow..
Why should I pay for another man's sins?
It wouldn't be right
And I don't deserve it..

Now I realize,
That everything was just a game
With the shadow and the light
And I caught in between…

Now, obviously, one path remains
For me to take:
The light anytime,
Then,
Definitely I will be
A free Man…
However, wondering
who my shadow
One day may be?
Since you are
Already somebody's else...

Its My Shadow

Who is that upon the stairs
Acting like he dont know where
And who is laying down all the cards
And giving me the wrong things to say
And like a wheel on the table
Hes a cain to my abel: oh.....its my shadow
A confessor to my dreams casting ribbons round my feet oh.....into my day
Its my shadow
Making eyes until the sun lights the daytime as she comes oh..... into my day
Happy in the time when I would have been there to see you
Happy in the time when I would have been there at all
Happy when the night is gone and I believe you
Happy when the night is gone and I need a call.
Who is chasing in the wind all the letters never sent
And who is dusting down the stars and giving me the wrong moves to make.
And like a wheel on the table, hes a cain to my abel
Dancing upon the floor, its my shadow
Making eyes until the sun blinds the daytime as she comes oh.....into my day
Its my shadow
Like a willow to my stream casting heaven round my feet oh.....into my day.
When you find that things are getting wild is that
The hardest smile that you can ever feel.
Paralysed until the sun lights the daytime as she comes.
And if my shadow comes a creeping
Then Ill always find me sleeping in the sun.

Shadow Me

Shadow me oh my
Dark emotion.
Shadow me all the way!

Shadow me to rock
In cradle heart,
To sway and just to sway!

Shadow me as a
Shady love tree,
In my hot, scorching day!

Shadow me must in,
Middle of night,
Like a gleaming pure ray!

Shadow me, shadow,
My foggy love,
Shadow wild me to tame.

Shadow to follow
My every step,
Shadow me in each poem!

I Must Rise From Where I Fall

To rise from where I fall

Subdued, I lost, I have no choice
But to surrender my own voice
Now I have to go to places
Missing your embraces
I am but just a shadow
In a nook without tomorrow
I walk under the rain
Where I am wet & drained
And cold in the night
In darkness I lose my sight
This is the time of losing
In his arms you are smiling
And you will not be with me
With him you can only be
I understand perfectly what losing is
you are not with me, you are his
This is not the end however,
This is just another fever
I must get out from this wall.
I must rise from where I fall

The Night in Isla Negra

Ancient night and the unruly salt
beat at the walls of my house.
The shadow is all one, the sky
throbs now along with the ocean,
and sky and shadow erupt
in the crash of their vast conflict.
All night long they struggle;
nobody knows the name
of the harsh light that keeps slowly opening
like a languid fruit.
So on the coast comes to light,
out of seething shadow, the harsh dawn,
gnawed at by the moving salt,
swept clean by the mass of night,
bloodstained in its sea-washed crater.

Light And Shadow

the shadow hides itself
behind the body
away from light that
stabs it to
death

'too much light' says the
shadow
' amidst this heat
i shall perish' the shadow
fears

the body is there
as shield
and protects the shadow
from extinction

'not too dark' warns the shadow
i must be in the middle
somewhere

where light makes love
with absence
the shadow to its fullness

Valentine

Written by dewey bunnell, 1980
Found on alibi.
Well, she said all along, Im her one
A little fingernail polish, chewin gum
Her round the world heart made of platinum, thats right
She looks like a china doll baby, especially in white
A tropicana flower in the candlelight
She turned into a pumpkin pie, sweet kiss at midnight
She moves, oh so fine
Shes like a perfect valentine
Shes not one to fall in love
Shes too high on the stars above at night
She wants to be your red-hot mama, all alone
She dances with the boys on the telephone
She makes a lotta noise in the quiet zone at night
Yeah, you talk about a party at the beach, aint that grand
She just took a raincheck with another man
Who lay on the deck of his catamaran some night
She moves, oh so fine
Shes like a perfect valentine
Shes not one to fall in love
Shes too high on the stars above at night
Well, I cant tell you much, but what I know (what I know)
You cant take her with you when its time to go
cause she knows where its at with a romeo, youll see
She moves, oh so fine
Shes like a perfect valentine
Shes not one to fall in love
Shes too high on the stars above at night
She moves
Just like a perfect valentine
Shes not one to fall in love
Shes too high on the stars above at night

You Are The Empty...

i am the cross,
and i am the kiss...
i am the embrace,
and the parting stillness.
i am death falling from the trees,
i am eternity in the promise of snow.
i am the word spoken and heard,
slowly undressed with awe and hunger.
i am the tongue drawing history's face,
in every secret place, in every hidden treasure.
i am the fluid of love spillt with passion,
i am the touch, trembling and sure.
i am the shadow that lit the candle,
the shoe that fell to the floor.
i am the covered bridge,
and the sound of horses' hooves.
the screech of the owl,
the taunt of the moonlight.
i am the glass broken,
the panting of the darkness.
i am the chimney too long cold.
i am the name spoken in grunts,
the moan of the waves that cant find shore.
i am the wings that define the night,
you are the empty waiting to be filled!
