To The Judge
_A Voice From the Interior of Old Hoop-Pole Township_
Friend of my earliest youth,
Can't you arrange to come down
And visit a fellow out here in the woods--
Out of the dust of the town?
Can't you forget you're a Judge
And put by your dolorous frown
And tan your wan face in the smile of a friend--
Can't you arrange to come down?
Can't you forget for a while
The arguments prosy and drear,--
To lean at full-length in indefinite rest
In the lap of the greenery here?
Can't you kick over 'the Bench,'
And 'husk' yourself out of your gown
To dangle your legs where the fishing is good--
Can't you arrange to come down?
Bah! for your office of State!
And bah! for its technical lore!
What does our President, high in his chair,
But wish himself low as before!
Pick between peasant and king,--
Poke your bald head through a crown
Or shadow it here with the laurels of Spring!--
Can't you arrange to come down?
'Judge it' out _here_, if you will,--
The birds are in session by dawn;
You can draw, not _complaints_, but a sketch of the hill
And a breath that your betters have drawn;
You can open your heart, like a case,
To a jury of kine, white and brown,
And their verdict of 'Moo' will just satisfy you!--
Can't you arrange to come down?
Can't you arrange it, old Pard?--
Pigeonhole Blackstone and Kent!--
Here we have 'Breitmann,' and Ward,
Twain, Burdette, Nye, and content!
Can't you forget you're a Judge
And put by your dolorous frown
And tan your wan face in the smile of a friend--
Can't you arrange to come down?

I work from awkwardness. By that I mean I don't like to arrange things. If I stand in front of something, instead of arranging it, I arrange myself.

Arrange The Family
Are we here?
Nobody says no.
But I believe not.
Is it a circle?
Everybody says yes.
But I believe not.
Take a break.
I will tell you
the reason
and you will be
out of question
session.
Arrange all the
questions in a family
as simple as air
as simple as star.
Everybody who wants to
fly can fly.
And the ungrateful
the scoundrel
find no place here.
Arrange the family
in the manner
that comes to you.
Here you get peace
be happy.

One Second Behind(for Junie)
Memory takes
the chair
places it perfectly
in mid-air
yet erases the stair
that brings me there
forgets to sketch in
the rest of the house
the storm is placed
just outside the window
(just as it was)
livid with lightning
the voice of the thunder
the window appearing
out of nowhere
a wall a little
unsure of itself
appears & disappears.
Memory still holds us
curled up together
the chair's pattern
imprinted on your skin
each one not knowing
where one ends or begins
your voice
creates the story
& I
intently listen
unwilling to miss
a single syllable
the poem written
upon your breath
memory as if obcessed
attempts to recover
what is...lost
puts it back
bit by bit
until it almost
achieves a perfect
fit
but
not
...quite
Death erasing
every scene
as it is
written
memory desperate
to attain a perfection
arrange and re-arrange
it again.
Death always
one second ahead
memory always
one second behind.

The Way You Look Tonight
Some day, when I'm awfully low,
When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you...
And the way you look tonight.
Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
And the way you look tonight.
With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart...
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.
Lovely don't you ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
'cause I love you ... just the way you look tonight.
Lovely don't you ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it ?
cause I love you ... just the way you look tonight.
Mm, mm, mm, mm,
Just the way you look to-night.

Asylum
Jimmy cream was keen, his brain wal always winnin,
I cant keep tabs on mine, its really quite a joke
I see him down the road, I ask if hed be willing
To lend me 15p - Im dying for a smoke
Dont arrange to have me sent to no asylum
Im just as sane as anyone
Its a just a game I play for fun - for fun.
I told em - look! - I said Im not the way youre thinkin,
Just when Im down, Ill be a clown, Ill play the fool.
Please dont arrange to have me set to no asylum
Its just a game I play for fun - for fun.
Will he take a sailboat ride?
He is very likely to,
Will he feel good inside?
He aint very likely to,
Will he tell you hes alive?
He is always trying to
But nothin, no nothin, does he say
In the morning when the days begun
- hello good morning, how are you?
And in the evening or the noonday sun
- what a lovely afternoon!
Well Ive been living next to you
Bluesy monday is the one day that they come here,
When they haunt me and taunt me in my cage.
I mock them all, theyre feelin small, they got no answer
Theyre playin dumb but Im just lauging as they rage
Dont arrange to have me sent to no asylum
Its only a game I play for fun
Ive been foolin everyone - everyone.
Will he take a sailboat ride?
He is very likely to
Will he fool good insidie?
He aint ever likely to
Will he tell you hes alive?
He is always tryin to
But nothin, no nothin does he vere say
In the morning when the days begun
- do you think it looks like rain?
And in the evening or the noonday sun
- you know I nearly missed my train
Well Ive been living next to you my friend
But what kind of friend are you?
Is it the beginning or the sorry end?
Will I ever see it through?
Ive never been insane
Oh whats the game?
I believe Im dying...
Hes mad, mad, mad...
Not quite right...
Oooooooooo..............

Eventually I'll Die Aug 21st,2012
EVENTUALLY I'LL DIE Aug 21st,2012
BY
JAMES BREDIN
Sometime, somehow, someplace, I am eventually going to die,
Fortunately or unfortunately, I still don't know why,
Eventually I'd like to arrange the time and place and die,
Have good family and friends around and arrange to say goodbye.
But right now, death with dignity is against all our laws,
They did it to Sue Rodriguez to activists' applause,
After they allowed abortions, so politically correct,
Killing thousands of unborn babies but they claim they're perfect.
You don't have to be a genius to see that there's something wrong,
Is it possible by the time I die; they'll have changed their song?
If we had binding referendums, we could change all this,
But no way, they'll allow us to have anything like the Swiss.

We don't cry—Tim and I
196
We don't cry—Tim and I,
We are far too grand—
But we bolt the door tight
To prevent a friend—
Then we hide our brave face
Deep in our hand—
Not to cry—Tim and I—
We are far too grand—
Nor to dream—he and me—
Do we condescend—
We just shut our brown eye
To see to the end—
Tim—see Cottages—
But, Oh, so high!
Then—we shake—Tim and I—
And lest I—cry—
Tim—reads a little Hymn—
And we both pray—
Please, Sir, I and Tim—
Always lost the way!
We must die—by and by—
Clergymen say—
Tim—shall—if I—do—
I—too—if he—
How shall we arrange it—
Tim—was—so—shy?
Take us simultaneous—Lord—
I—"Tim"—and Me!

There Is a Lesson in This
When one confesses that they have not been their best.
There is a lesson in this many don't expect.
When one confesses that they have not been their best.
They're making changes to arrange,
A ridding of routines that has brought them mental stress.
When one confesses that they have not been their best,
They feel this needed.
With a lesson in this many don't expect.
And it is needed.
When one chooses to confess they're not the best,
With honesty.
They're making changes to arrange,
A ridding of routines...
That caused them mental stress.
When one confesses that they have not been their best,
They feel this needed.
With a lesson in this many don't expect.
And it is needed.
When one chooses to confess they're not the best,
With honesty.

When one confesses that they have not been their best.
They're making changes to arrange,
A ridding of routines that has brought them mental stress.
All day,
And all night...
They want to let it show,
That they can be their best.
All day,
And all night...
They want to let it show,
That they can be their best.
To everybody!
Now...
All day,
And all night...
They want to let it show,
That they can be their best.
To everybody!
When one confesses that they have not been their best.
There is a lesson in this many don't expect.

That they can be their best.

An open letter to the Cricket Board if it still exists
You must arrange a triangular cricket tournament
In between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in lankan grounds
And must be fair umpires to be present to catch the shy bowler.

Still Life with Tulips
Because you did, I too arrange flowers,
Watching the pistils just like insolent tongues
And the hard, red flesh of the petals
Widening beneath my eyes. They move like the hands
Of clocks, seeming not to move except
When I turn my gaze; then savagely
In the white room, they billow and spread
Until their redness engulfs me utterly.
Mother, you are far away and claim
In mournful letters that I do not need you;
Yet here in this sunny room, your tulips
Devour me, sucking hungrily
My watery nourishment, filling my house
Like a presence, like an enemy.
Geared to your intervals as the small hand
Of a clock repeats the larger, I,
Your too-faithful daughter, still drag behind you,
Turning in the same slow circles.
Across the years and distances, my hands
Among these fierce, red blossoms repeat
Your gestures. I hope my daughter never writes:
'Because you did, I too arrange flowers.'
