The Watches Of The Night

O the waiting in the watches of the night!
In the darkness, desolation, and contrition and affright;
The awful hush that holds us shut away from all delight:
The ever weary memory that ever weary goes
Recounting ever over every aching loss it knows--
The ever weary eyelids gasping ever for repose--
In the dreary, weary watches of the night!

Dark--stifling dark--the watches of the night!
With tingling nerves at tension, how the blackness flashes white
With spectral visitations smitten past the inner sight!--
What shuddering sense of wrongs we've wrought
that may not be redressed--
Of tears we did not brush away--of lips we left unpressed,
And hands that we let fall, with all their loyalty unguessed!
Ah! the empty, empty watches of the night!

What solace in the watches of the night?--
What frailest staff of hope to stay--what faintest shaft of light?
Do we _dream_ and dare _believe_ it, that by never weight of right
Of our own poor weak deservings, we shall win the dawn at last--
Our famished souls find freedom from this penance for the past,
In a faith that leaps and lightens from the gloom
that flees aghast--
Shall we survive the watches of the night?

One leads us through the watches of the night--
By the ceaseless intercession of our loved ones lost to sight
He is with us through all trials, in His mercy and His might;--
With our mothers there about Him, all our sorrow disappears,
Till the silence of our sobbing is the prayer the Master hears,
And His hand is laid upon us with the tenderness of tears
In the waning of the watches of the night.

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart feel lonely
And long for heaven and home
When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches over me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me
I sing because I'm happy
I sing because I'm free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches
I know He watches
I know He watches me

A child's perspective....

There's an angel in the curtains
mummy, mummy come and see.

Daughter, daughter I can see her
she's as pretty as can be!

Why is she in the curtains?
Mummy, mummy tell me do.

She is your guardian angel
and she watches over you.

Will she come and play with me?
I've great games we could play.

No dear, you must find some friends
and they will play those games.

So if she's my guardian angel
who watches over her?

Daughter darling daughter
God watches over her.

And mummy, mummy tell me
who watches over God?

No one, darling daughter
but we can give God love.

Then mummy I will love him
by morning and by night.

I don't want him to be lonely
when he's in bed at night.

For The Sake of My Child

The prayer tells me to ask for serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
My child watches and waits by my side.
The prayer tells me to ask for courage to change the things I can.
My child watches and waits by my side.
The prayer tells me to ask for wisdom to know the difference.
My child watches and waits by my side.
The actions I need to do for my recovery are just too hard today.
My child watches and waits by my side.
The time I pity myself and doubt if anyone really understands is plenty.
My child watches and waits by my side.
The hands on the clock do not stop for me to catch my breath.
Not even for the sake of my child.

Raison D'Etre

O WEARY night, O weary day,
When heart's delight is far away!

What is the day? A frame of blue
The vacant-glaring sun grins through.
What is the night? A sable veil
Through which the moon peers tired and pale.

O weary day! O weary night!
How far away is heart's delight!

Love hung the sun in his high place
To give me light to see her face,
And love spread out the veil of night
To hide us two from all men's sight.

O kindly night, O pleasant day,
Your use is gone--why should ye stay?
My heart's delight is far away,
O weary night, O weary day.

A Higher Power Watches

A Higher Power Watches
Who deliberately causes
The innocent to flout
The sweet to become bitter
The peaceful to become upset.

A Higher Power Watches
People who provoke
The good to do evil.
To speak unkind
To deceive to live unclean.

A Higher Power Watches
How the family behaves
How friends are engaged
Or how who ever interrupts
Or encourages a Life.

A Higher Power Watches
Consciously every move.
Inspirations and righteousness
Cleanliness and courage
Ameliorations and aspirations.

A Higher Power Watches
What every insight sees.
Every intellectual knowing
Every attitude existing
What life's breath blows.

A Higher Power Watches
Every humilation
Every honesty and sincerity
Every forgiveness
And every loving thought.

Flippie comes and lies with me

Flippie comes and lies with me
and she wants to know,
why you are staying away
for so long
and her dog eyes
watches me.

Kyla swings her big tail
and is very glad to see me,
but goes away to wait for you
for she hopes
to see you before the night.

Jeanie lays at the gate
and watches the street into the dark,
to see if you come
and she moans
when I call her to come in.

Slowly the day’s pass
while we wait on you
and I wonder if they
are treating you well
and the tea is nice,
but I drink it alone
and I know well
that our time on this earth
is just borrowed.

Be an umpire

Players watch the game they play.
The umpire watches the game.
The audience watches the game.
The staff watches the game.
Their emotions and reactions vary.
Being an umpire is the best option.

I Have God

I have God and God has me, He’s my guide to eternity,
Where I am, God will be, for my Lord watches over me,
I’m always in God’s sight, as He watches day and night,
Knowing He’s always right, His Word’s my guiding light.

Like Abraham, called friend, God is with me to the end,
With me at every bend, together in Eternity we’ll spend,
He is my Savior and my Guide, from me, He won’t hide,
When in God’s Spirit I abide, He is with me, by my side.

God is with me day by day, as I walk in the narrow way,
Forever with me He will stay, as I enter Heaven one day,
He’s with me on this sod, leading me with staff and rod;
My hope is to see His nod, when I see the Face of God.

This as God, above I serve, with a hope I don’t deserve,
As my life God will preserve, so eternally He I can serve,
For it was God, Who saved me, so I could live eternally,
He saved me from the night, giving me His Eternal Light.

By my God I won’t be denied, as His Spirit dwells inside,
My Savior who calls me friend, gave me life with no end,
For He sent to us Jesus Christ, to become our Sacrifice,
Not just affording me Paradise, but granting Eternal Life.

Two O'Clock

Night after night goes by: and clocks still chime
And stars are changing pattrns in the dark
And watches tick, and over-puissant Time
Benumbs the eager brain. The dogs that bark,
The trains that roar and rattle in the night,
The very cats that prowl, all quiet find
And leave the darkness empty, silent quite:
Sleep comes to chloroform the fretting mind.

So all things end: and what is left at last?
Some scribbled sonnets tossed upon the floor,
A memory of easy days gone past,
A run-down watch, a pipe, some clothes we wore-
And in the darkened room I lean to know
How her dreamless breath doth pause and flow.

Nightmare Raven

A Raven perches on the branch
and stares into my window
watches me sleep
watches me dream
Mr.Raven why do you watch me?
when you're around
my skin goes cold
and my dreams morph into nightmares
I dream of one's I've lost
and that I'm losing them again
stabbed in the heart
running up an endless street
I try to scream
but I am mute
I'm alone
Mr.Raven why do you effect me so?
do you wish to frighten me?
I will sleep during the day
and wander at night as you do
If that is your wish
Mr.Raven leave me be
go back to the shoulder of Death
disappear from my sight

Requiescant

In lonely watches night by night
Great visions burst upon my sight,
For down the stretches of the sky
The hosts of dead go marching by.

Strange ghostly banners o’er them float,
Strange bugles sound an awful note,
And all their faces and their eyes
Are lit with starlight from the skies.

The anguish and the pain have passed
And peace hath come to them at last,
But in the stern looks linger still
The iron purpose and the will.

Dear Christ, who reign’st above the flood
Of human tears and human blood,
A weary road these men have trod,
O house them in the home of God!

For My Sake

(Written in aid of the Children's Hospital.)

MATTHEW XXV. 40.

“Inasmuch as ye gave ear unto the sighing
Of the least of these the children of my care,—
Of your love from death redeemed them, or in dying
Stood between them and the shadow of despair;—

“Inasmuch as when the little ones did languish,
Ye put forth the hand to make their burdens light;—
Inasmuch as when they lay on beds of anguish,
Ye were with them in the watches of the night;—

“All the joy ye brought to light when sorrow hid it
Now awaits you, an exceeding great reward.
As ye did it unto these, to ME ye did it;
Enter ye into the joy of your Lord.”

“Lord, when sought we out the children that did languish?
When put forth the hand to make their burdens light?
Lord, we wist not when they lay on beds of anguish,
And we slept throughout the watches of the night.

“For our lives were full of trouble and of labour,
And the night followed hard upon the day:
Had we lingered with the children of our neighbour,
Our own little ones had perished by the way.”

“Inasmuch as though ye might not touch or tend them,
Ye were with them in your love to heal and save,
And were hands and feet to those who did befriend them,
By the gold and by the silver that ye gave.

“Find your treasure where your ransomed ones have hid it;
Take it back a thousandfold for your reward.
As you did it unto these, to ME ye did it;
Enter ye into the joy of your Lord.”

Wolves
frolic and howl
Human eye
watches from concealed corner
She
stands, lashes black, lids blue, lips red
Skirt hiked up
Lust's

smiling

Sun chases Moon around room
Sun tenderly touches Moon's lips; a luminescent view
Taking Sun in her hands, light pierces darkness
Sun's serene strong face smiles
Moon a small trembling timid stone
Sun dances in Moon's warm lake
Paradise
Pink Moon - astronomical, phenomenal
Sun's shaft - exquisite and unhindered.

Wreathed in love

The moon watches us...

the wind blows,
up against
our cold cheeks,
the moon watches us.

together,
here on this hill
we sit close to
eachother,
the moon watches us.

side by side we sit,
close to eachother, so
warmth is between us,
the moon still watches us.

thinking of eachother,
we think in our mind how
much we love eachother,
the moon is still thier
just like the first time i
pictured me and him together.

Vigil

Deep in the twilight grey
I wait
for black night to drop
suddenly
and completely.

At the end of the day,
hope is measured
one careful procedure
at a time.

Night
is not kind in winter.

Too early It comes,
and stays much too long.

It brings fear,
red eyes
and stinging tears.

Lit by throbbing numbers
night probes your veins
one pulse at a time,

as your shivering soul watches
from cool blue bars
gleaming in the distant ceiling.

Stroking your hands
In the fading day's light
I pray
for one more
morning.

On the Summit of Mt. Clarence

On the summit of Mount Clarence rotting slowly in the air
Stands a tall and naked flagstaff, relic of the Russian scare—
Russian scare that scares no longer, for the cry is “All is well”—
Yet the flagstaff still is standing like a lonely sentinel.
And it watches through the seasons—winter’s cold and summer’s heat,
Watches seaward, watches ever for the phantom Russian fleet.

In a cave among the ridges, where the scrub is tall and thick
With no human being near him dwells a wretched lunatic:
On Mount Clarence in the morning he will fix his burning eyes,
And he scans the sea and watches for the signal flag to rise;
In his ears the roar of cannon and the sound of battle drums
While he cleans his gun and watches for the foe that never comes.

And they say, at dreary nightfall, when the storms are howling round
Comes a phantom ship to anchor in the waters of the “Sound”,
And the lunatic who sees it wakes the landscape with his whoops,
Loads his gun and marches seaward at the head of airy troops—
To the summit of Mount Clarence leads them on with martial tread,
Fires his gun and sends the Russians to the mustering of the dead.
