Limitations Of Genius

The audience entire seemed pleased--indeed
_Extremely_ pleased. And little Maymie, freed
From her task of instructing, ran to show
Her wondrous colored picture to and fro
Among the company.

'And how comes it,' said
Some one to Mr. Hammond, 'that, instead
Of the inventor's life you did not choose
The _artist's?_--since the world can better lose
A cutting-box or reaper than it can
A noble picture painted by a man
Endowed with gifts this drawing would suggest'--
Holding the picture up to show the rest.
'_There now!_' chimed in the wife, her pale face lit
Like winter snow with sunrise over it,--
'That's what _I'm_ always asking him.--But _he_--
_Well_, as he's answering _you_, he answers _me_,--
With that same silent, suffocating smile
He's wearing now!'

For quite a little while
No further speech from anyone, although
All looked at Mr. Hammond and that slow,
Immutable, mild smile of his. And then
The encouraged querist asked him yet again
_Why was it_, and etcetera--with all
The rest, expectant, waiting 'round the wall,--
Until the gentle Mr. Hammond said
He'd answer with a '_parable_,' instead--
About 'a dreamer' that he used to know--
'An artist'--'master'--_all_--in _embryo_.

I have talked to Debbie Hammond quite a bit, Jim Hammond's wife, his widow. I've seen their kids. And last time we played Dallas, a lot of them came over. It's hard for them to come see the show. It's still hard.

The Evening Company

Within the sitting-room, the company
Had been increased in number. Two or three
Young couples had been added: Emma King,
Ella and Mary Mathers--all could sing
Like veritable angels--Lydia Martin, too,
And Nelly Millikan.--What songs they knew!--

_''Ever of Thee--wherever I may be,
Fondly I'm drea-m-ing ever of thee!_''

And with their gracious voices blend the grace
Of Warsaw Barnett's tenor; and the bass
Unfathomed of Wick Chapman--Fancy still
Can _feel_, as well as _hear_ it, thrill on thrill,
Vibrating plainly down the backs of chairs
And through the wall and up the old hall-stairs.--
Indeed young Chapman's voice especially
Attracted _Mr. Hammond_--For, said he,
Waiving the most Elysian sweetness of
The _ladies_' voices--altitudes above
The _man's_ for sweetness;--_but_--as _contrast_, would
Not Mr. Chapman be so very good
As, just now, to oblige _all_ with--in fact,
Some sort of _jolly_ song,--to counteract
In part, at least, the sad, pathetic trend
Of music _generally_. Which wish our friend
'The Noted Traveler' made second to
With heartiness--and so each, in review,
Joined in--until the radiant _basso_ cleared
His wholly unobstructed throat and peered
Intently at the ceiling--voice and eye
As opposite indeed as earth and sky.--
Thus he uplifted his vast bass and let
It roam at large the memories booming yet:

''Old Simon the Cellarer keeps a rare store
Of Malmsey and Malvoi-sie,
Of Cyprus, and who can say how many more?--
But a chary old so-u-l is he-e-ee--
A chary old so-u-l is he!
Of hock and Canary he never doth fail;
And all the year 'round, there is brewing of ale;--
Yet he never aileth, he quaintly doth say,
While he keeps to his sober six flagons a day.''

... And then the chorus--the men's voices all
_Warred_ in it--like a German Carnival.--
Even _Mrs_. Hammond smiled, as in her youth,
Hearing her husband--And in veriest truth
'The Noted Traveler's' ever-present hat
Seemed just relaxed a little, after that,
As at conclusion of the Bacchic song
He stirred his 'float' vehemently and long.

Then Cousin Rufus with his flute, and art
Blown blithely through it from both soul and heart--
Inspired to heights of mastery by the glad,
Enthusiastic audience he had
In the young ladies of a town that knew
No other flutist,--nay, nor _wanted_ to,
Since they had heard _his_ 'Polly Hopkin's Waltz,'
Or 'Rickett's Hornpipe,' with its faultless faults,
As rendered solely, he explained, 'by ear,'
Having but heard it once, Commencement Year,
At 'Old Ann Arbor.'

Little Maymie now
Seemed 'friends' with _Mr. Hammond_--anyhow,
Was lifted to his lap--where settled, she--
Enthroned thus, in her dainty majesty,
Gained _universal_ audience--although
Addressing him alone:--'I'm come to show
You my new Red-blue pencil; and _she_ says'--
(Pointing to _Mrs._ Hammond)--'that she guess'
You'll make a _picture_ fer me.'

'And what _kind_
Of picture?' Mr. Hammond asked, inclined
To serve the child as bidden, folding square
The piece of paper she had brought him there.--
'I don't know,' Maymie said--'only ist make
A _little dirl_, like me!'

He paused to take
A sharp view of the child, and then he drew--
Awhile with red, and then awhile with blue--
The outline of a little girl that stood
In converse with a wolf in a great wood;
And she had on a hood and cloak of red--
As Maymie watched--'_Red Riding Hood!_' she said.
'And who's '_Red Riding Hood'?_'

'W'y, don't _you_ know?'
Asked little Maymie--

But the man looked so
All uninformed, that little Maymie could
But tell him _all about_ Red Riding Hood.

The Power Of Smile

you are beautiful in any picture and any look
and the most impressive... is your smile!
really... one can show a nice smile in one picture,
but ALL your pictures show a nice smile.
this does make a difference, doesn't it?

maybe... or maybe you just communicate with your smile
something good and friendly that is in you

hi dear, take care and... keep smiling.
only the ones who have suffered really know
how life can be beautiful.
a song say: whenever i see your smiling face,
I have to smile myself...

this is the power of smile

i always smile and fight for life...

Could You Picture Life?

Could you picture life?
Could you picture life?
Misty morning with birds singing melodies,

Could you picture life in the clouds,
The Morning star,
The comets,
The ufos,
The foolishness in racism,

Could you see CNN,
The crimes and the bursting that we play everyday,
The religious crimes,
Could you picture the negation in man?

That we die everyday is sin,
Could you picture?
Love is worth the New World Understanding,
Picture my eyes and see that we all be crying,
My brothers and sisters are dyeing and suffocating,
Picture the New World,

Where the True Understanding will dwell in our heart,
Could you picture?
You and I are no different,
We same creatures that creep for Bread,
Could you picture?
No man better than other,
Could you picture?
The credibility of Human Trust.

Family Picture?

What is a family picture?
Is it all for real?
Are the people that you see
pretending they don't feel?

Can you see their anger?
Can you smell their fear?
Do you sense unhappiness
in the picture that's so clear?

We're trying to be perfect,
to look a certain way.
A family picture says so much
when there's nothing nice to say.

You plaster on the fake smile.
You put your arms 'just so'.
You show the world your family
without letting your family show.

You Don't Have To Paint Me A Picture

The kiss was colder than I remember
When we first said hello
I guess the flame's now a little lower
I can feel you letting go
You know the pain drops a little darker
Then when you first put it on
I guess your love's like some old cheap and magic marker
Said forever nice go
But you don't have to paint me a picture
You don't have to say things at all
You don't have to paint me a picture
I can see in the writing on the wall
When we first fell, we fell a long way
Summer nights and winter days
Mountain sunrise, ocean sunset
Hand in hand in the haze
Now it's cold heart summer evenings
And there's clouds on my sunrise
But you don't have to smile and say you're happy
I can see what's in your eyes
You don't have to paint me a picture
You don't have to say things at all
You don't have to paint me a picture
I can see in the writing on the wall

Silent

What is an art
The artist asked
And I could not
Answer and busy
Composing word.

What is a word
Asked the poet
And I could not
Answer and busy
In a picture.

And what is a picture
I could not get answer
Everybody is silent
Including the nature.

Smile For Me

'Smile for me!

Is somebody waiting for me?

She took this picture

Did she take it for me?

Time is ticking,

Her smile insists, just to tell her was she waiting me?

When she smiles, I feel it, I know, I see it.

When she’s happy,

Smiles so bright, gives me another reason

For her her I’d fight!

I am happy when she’s happy

I smile when she smiles

I face the fact that it’s just her smile.

But I know inside,

Deep inside that smile,

She smiles for me, just for awhile.

A picture perfected, you should see

I just love it when she smiles for me.

She inspires me to reach out my hand

Hold her close

Let her stand

That smile of hers, no one can take,

No matter how early, no matter how late.

The time it takes, you must understand

It starting now, it starts again.

When you see her smile

It makes you see, just how deep is her real beauty.

To display her I would

Smile for me she should

My day would be complete, when she even smiles for me.

Those eyes, that skin, her hair, that grin

Makes you forget what world you are in

Her eyes I gaze

Her hands so soft

When she?

Will she?

I think she ought.

Smile for me, not the first or the last

Just smile for me, my time has past

I wait to see that smile she wore

She smiles for me forevermore.

Did I miss it?

Here it comes, a smile for me is coming out

But when, If, I wonder how.

She smiles when she sees me, when I am no where around

That smile she has inspires us all.

Will she smile? will she smile at all?

I wait to see, is it coming out? That smile is here,

It’s out it’s out

Taken with time

A grin so new

Just one more smile

Ok make it two.

Held in my arms.

Waiting’ to see.

Smiling, waiting, too much to ask,

But smile for me, at last, at last!

I saw one coming out

Here’s another

She smiles, she smiles like no other.
When she, will she, I should wonder,
But that smile of hers is the 9th world wonder.

Smile for me, smile wide smile bright!
Give me a smile to rest with tonight.

My smile is yours as you can see,
But smile for me so they all can see.

Hidden behind that timeless frame,
Is a smile I would love to see again and again'

Take A Picture

Just a picture, could mean a couple words,
But the one I hold dearly close to my heart,
Means more to me than anything else,
This photograph, you I love in black and white.

There are so many things I could say,
Though one word stands out amongst the rest,
It starts with love and ends with you,
The one I want to share with every single moment.

To be with you, at your side, and experience the joys,
Or you in my arms, holding you close to me, as you cry,
We're a team together, we work things out,
So we can both remember these dreams.

I've held your picture as I dream of us,
One day, we'll be holding our picture,
Wedding bells or birthday wishes,
Whichever comes first, I'll always be there.

Be there, when we say our wedding vows,
Or holding your hand as we welcome our new child,
Cheering you on when you go to your new job,
Seeing you smile as life passes us by.

I don't know what else to write or say,
As I look at the picture in my hands,
Putting my pen down and wishing you goodnight,
This photo of you, in black and white.

Game Show

Cuttin pictures from a magazine
... paper smile but not from you to me
Another statue in a ?
A breakfast alone
Another compromising ?
Another game show
The game show
The game show
I pass the time away before I sleep
I have your picture sitting next to me
I taped your picture in a book
Dont bother reading I just take a look
Dont have to turn the page before I know
So full of answers I dont need to know
I like to take control
I like the game show
The game show
The game show
Dont have to turn the page before I know
You ask me questions I already know
The time has finally come to let it go
I like to take control
I like the game show
The game show

Picture Show

A young man from a small town
With a very large imagination
Lay alone in his room with his radio on
Looking for another station
When the static from the mouthpiece
Gave way to the sound below
James dean went out to hollywood
And put his picture in a picture show.
James dean went out to hollywood
And put his picture in a picture show.
Chorus:
And its oh daddy get off of your knees
Mamma whyd you have to go
Your darling jim is out a limb
I put my picture in a picture show
Whoa ho! put my picture in a picture show
Hamburgers cheeseburgers
Wilbur and orville wright
John garfield in the afternoon
Montgomery clift at night
When the static hit the mouthpiece
Gave way to the sound below
James dean went out to hollywood
And put his picture in a picture show.
Repeat chorus:
A mocca man in a wigwam sitting on a reservation.
With a big black hole in the belly of his soul
Waiting on an explanation
While the white man sits on his fat can
And takes pictures of the navajo
Every time he clicks his kodak pics
He steals a little bit of soul.
Every time he clicks his kodak pics
He steals a little bit of soul.
Repeat chorus:
Yie hi! put my picture in a picture show
Here we go!
A young man from a small town
With a very large imagination...

The Big Picture

Going round the world
Dont know where were going
We dont even care
But you just cant be from someplace else
Unless you go somewhere
And were in the same boat
So as long as it floats
We might as well stop n stare
At the big picture
The big picture
Get the b-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-g picture
Were almost there
Were gonna keep on going
til that new age dawns
Always keeping an eye on the stars in the sky
In case one starts to fall
And were in the same boat
As the ones who cant float
So they might freak out and sink us all
And miss the big picture
(going round the world)
The big picture
(got to get it now)
Like a fish in the water
You dont know where youve been
til you jump out and take a look around
At the b-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-g picture

Snow Girl

Snow girl
Snowy girl
Wont you take me down
Because Im coming down
But is there anything there
Everything there
Everything happy with
My little snow girl
Snowy girl
I pick up the picture of you
You pick up the picture of me
I pick up the picture of you
Wont you take me down
I need to be your clown, yeah
But is there anything wrong
Weathers all gone
Anyone listening to my little snow girl
Snowy girl
Everything pretty
Everything pale
Every little touch of a rose in the mail
Only one girl, shes laying in the snow
Let me have a lean on your little elbow
When we kiss, we kiss with laughter
Snow girl
Snow girl
Snowy girl
I pick up the picture of you
You pick up the picture of me
I pick up the picture of you
You pick up the picture of me
Yeah

Last Night You Sent A Picture

last night
you sent a picture
a face surrounded with flowers.
i sent mine
a face waiting for your body
in bed.
you sent another picture this time
it is your son saying
leave her alone and
so i sent a picture of my wife
kissing my lips and too saying
leave him alone
he is mine.

this morning you say
i'm sorry and i am wondering
if i have to send another picture
thru the MMS
saying: are you the mistress of the ruins?

sorry? what are you sorry for?
we have nothing. I am only giving you
what you ask. Just giving.
Not taking.

yes, not taking you
seriously. And you like it?

love this poem. Play me.
You still like toys. Toy me.

Smile Like Heaven

Youre so young
And i,
I got to do something
When you swirl your feet
Your hands up high
And I get so confused
And the world comes
And the world comes
And the world comes
Tumbling down
Someday, when things are right
Ill take you up and smile
Someday when the sun is high
Im gonna tell you why
My words seem grey, so grey
By your sweeping colours swirling down
I know therere so few, I know
Who smile like you do
Oh will you come alive
Picture on the wall
Oh will you come to me
Ill take you anywhere
Oh with this smile like heaven
You smile like heaven
A smile in heaven

Way Of The World

(a. hammond, g. lyle)
Producers: chris lord-aldge, albert hammond, g. lyle
Album: simply the best (91)
Baby, I need a hand to hold tonight
And one bright star to remind me
How dear is this life
And baby, Ive never known anyone like you
Theres something very special about you
I cant imagine living without you
Its the way of the world and its motion
And no ocean can keep us apart
When the moment is right and youre holding me tight
You capture the beat of my heart
In my heart theres s fire always burning
And there isnt a thing I cant do
Im resigned to the fact that theres no turning back
And Ill never regret loving you
Baby, I will go anywhere you need
As long as youre there beside me
Baby, thats all I need
Hold me, hold me and never let me go
Im always gonna care about you
I never wanna be without you
Its the way of the world and its motion
And no ocean can keep us apart
When the moment is right and youre holding me tight
You capture the beat of my heart
In my heart theres s fire always burning
And there isnt a thing I cant do
Im resigned to the fact that theres no turning back
And Ill never regret loving you
Youre everything I believe in
So dont ever lose the feeling
Dont ever lose the feeling

Empty Picture Frame

An empty picture frame sits upon my desk
Where once upon a time a picture in it did rest
But now the frame stands lifeless and bare
Now it reminds me of a love that once was there.
As in the past the picture brought me happiness and joy
Gave me the reason to live and to write my story
To glance upon and dream of when no one was near
To speak the words of love when them she couldn't hear.
But when she left me I threw her picture away
But I kept that frame to remind me of that day
In remembrance of what she did in and out of my sight
As she was my candle but she blew out that light
So that picture frame I keep it in my plain view
So every time I see it I know what to say and what to do
As once upon a time her picture was in the frame
But now picture is gone but the memories still remain.
