A Blessing
Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota,
Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass.
And the eyes of those two Indian ponies
Darken with kindness.
They have come gladly out of the willows
To welcome my friend and me.
We step over the barbed wire into the pasture
Where they have been grazing all day, alone.
They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness
That we have come.
They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other.
There is no loneliness like theirs.
At home once more, they begin munching the young tufts of spring in the darkness.
I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms,
For she has walked over to me
And nuzzled my left hand.
She is black and white,
Her mane falls wild on her forehead,
And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear
That is delicate as the skin over a girl's wrist.
Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
Into blossom.

Beyond Blossoms, For James Wright
.
Old teacher,
consigned
to poems now -
another way
beyond blossoms
of which you
often spoke.
If you were here now I, too, would
speak of horses encountered on a
hill in the south of France, Monthaut,
its ruined church without knees,
sun low over foothills of the Pyrenees -
From shadowed trees downhill
at least 20 of them run to me.
I feel them before they fiercely
appear, hooves tearing dirt
and grass in their ecstatic
ascent of the steep arriving
like excited birds, haunches
quivering, damp from late-summer heat.
Their soft noses push at my hands,
their vulnerable breasts press
hard against barbed wire.
They offer themselves to me,
their long necks extended,
massive heads dipping shyly,
not without some blood -
I think of you now as I did then,
remembering our bellowing lungs
in rich shared air, odors entwined
of earth, of mane, those of sweet
grasses and the binding brier
where they stamped, trembling.
Not poetry here,
Old Master;
just reporting,
how it all breaks open
blindly between doldrums,
dark hammock refusing
to be swayed on a bad day.
Something is here you already
know but if there is forgetting on
the other side of the fence
I remind you now.
My hands caress
echoing equine graces.
In their eyes I can see
in that way of all breezes, finally,
where you went.

Cautious Man
Bill horton was a cautious man of the road
He walked lookin over his shoulder and remained faithful to its code
When something caught his eye hed measure his need
And then very carefully hed proceed
Billy met a young girl in the early days of may
It was there in her arms he let his cautiousness slip away
In their lovers twilight as the evening sky grew dim
Hed lay back in her arms and laugh what had happened to him
On his right hand billy tattooed the word love and on his left hand was the word fear
And in which hand he held his fate was never clear
Come indian summer he took his young lover for his bride
And with own hands built a great house down by the riverside
Now billy was an honest man he wanted to do what was right
He worked hard to fill their lives with happy days and loving nights
Alone on his knees in the darkness for steadiness hed pray
For he knew in a restless heart the seed of betrayal lay
One night billy awoke from a terrible dream callin his wifes name
She lay breathing beside him in a peaceful sleep a thousand miles away
He got dressed in the moonlight and down to the highway he strode
When he got there he didnt find nothing but road
Billy felt a coldness rise up inside him that he couldnt name
Just as the words tattooed cross his knuckles he knew would always remain
At their bedside he brushed the hair from his wifes face as the moon shone on her skin so white
Filling their room with the beauty of gods fallen light

Little Girl Left Alone
little girl left alone
where'd her parents go
they went for ride
and never came home
little girl left alone
doesn't have enough to eat
she digs through the garbage bins
in search of some meat
little girl left alone
at night she has to roam
the river banks and railroad tracks
cause she doesn't have a home
little girl left alone
has her daddie's eyes
a wild shade of violet
that darken when she cries
little girl left alone
pushes the blade in
with blood flowing down her arms
this little girl cashes in

Love Across The Wire
Maurice white, thom bell & philip bailey
Girl, I wonder where you are
So I close my eyes and dream
About you, baby
And I wonder do you feel
Me a million miles away
cause Ive been needing
Chorus:
To send
Love across the wire to the only one
My heart is waiting for
I send
Love accross the wire
Tell here Ill be here
Until shes in my loving arms
It wont be long
Just a few more weeks from home
So I call you on the phone
To say I love you
Gonna send a card a day
All the time that Im away
I miss you madly
Chorus:
I send
Love accross the wire to the only one
My heart is waiting for
I send
Love across the wire
Tell her Ill be here
Until shes in my loving arms
It wont be long
Bridge:
Gonna kiss and hold you tight
Love you girl with all my might
Nothings gonna change my love
No one else can love you like I do
Chorus:
I send
Love accross the wire to the only one
My heart is waiting for
I send
Love across the wire, tell her Ill be here
Until shes in my loving arms

The Girl Of My Best Friend
(words & music by beverly ross - sam bobrick)
The way she walks,
The way she talks
How long can I pretend
Oh I cant help Im in love
With the girl of my best friend
Her lovely hair,
Her skin so fair
I could go on and never end
Oh, I cant help Im in love
With the girl of my best friend
I want to tell her
How I love her so
And hold her in my arms, but then
What if she got real mad and told him so
I could never face either one again
The way they kiss
Their happiness
Will my ache-in ever end
Or will I always be in love
With the girl of my best friend?
Never end,
Will it ever end?
Please let it end

Highway
Justin Hayward/John Lodge
It's a long, long highway
Will this road of life lead me to someone
Who sees the world in a grain of sand
Who holds the future in the palm of their hand, aaah
No one else can see things like I do
It's a long, long highway
Looking for a home where the seed was sown
And the harvest was young
Will this road of life lead me to someone, someone
The rays of sun and the light of dawn
My inspriation since the day I was born, aaah
No one else can see things like I do
It's a long, long highway
But don't make the start on an empty heart
When you think you've begun
Let the road of life lead you to someone, someone
Nothing is serious to me
I live for what will be (listen to me)
I can always be a dreamer
So trust your heart
Don't fall apart
You'll see
At your journey's end
You will find a friend in me
It's a long, long highway
Will this road of life lead me to someone
You touched the dream that was in your eyes
You took so long only to realize oooh
No one else can love you like I do
It's a long, long highway
Looking for a home where the seed was sown
And my harvest was young
Will this road of life lead me to someone
It's a long, long highway
But don't make a start
On an empty heart
It's a long, long highway
Let this road of life lead you to someone, someone

Scrawled In Sap
O the sky grey orange
An the walls stained blue
An I laid right down on the golden satin with you
Into sween dark circles of beautiful eyes
I go round
O lord
I go round
Will you tell me once again
Cream white skin
You are my friend
I seen you walkin and your white hips sway
O girl I will have you no more
To the moan in your voice
Not a charm do you lack
Your skin to touch as a black ravens back
But I cannot go far with these words as they rhyme
As to tell, of the pleasure, your hand in mine
An I pray as I say this song in this way
That your eyes they would close an your head begin to sway
An youll feel how he heals with his blood on our skin
I am yours lady scrawled an thin
Will you tell me once again
Cream white skin
You are my friend
I seen you walkin in your husbands way
Girl I will have you more

A Story Of True Love
Darkness surrounds my light,
Sadness fills my heart.
The day you came to me,
And ripped us both apart.
You walked away with tears,
You said it won't be long.
You just needed some time,
To build yourself up strong.
Friends we had become,
Though I still loved you so.
But never have I dreamed,
You would fully let me go.
But that day came,
And now you're with him.
I wanted to end it there,
For he was my best friend.
He came to you while you were weak,
Filled you with his lies.
Made you believe his 'feelings',
When you are nothing but his prize.
Now he kisses you,
His hands caress your skin.
You hold him in your arms,
Where once I had been.
This I know will not last,
For I told you long ago.
He only lusts after beauty,
This will someday show.
When he's gone, I'll be waiting,
For my love is pure and true.
By then you will be strong again,
And we'll start over new.

Run, Run, Run
I was sitting in the field, feeling the grass.
Counting the stars as they come out.
Feeling (feeling) the breeze, (feeling the breeze)
Feeling (feeling) the spring. (feeling the spring)
Suddenly I noticed there wasnt light anymore.
Run, run, run, run, run to the light,
Run, run, run, run, run for your life.
I tumbled on roots, stumbled on stones.
Lost my marbles, stepped on my glasses.
Feeling (feeling) the air, (feeling the air)
Feeling (feeling) the wind. (feeling the wind)
Suddenly I noticed it wasnt fun anymore.
Run, run, run, run, run towards the light,
Run, run, run, run, run for your life.
I came out of the darkness into the house,
The lights were left on but nobody around.
Feeling (feeling) the room, (feeling the room)
Feeling (feeling) the space. (feeling the space)

Chokecherries
Thirty feet from my windows,
an old kennel-wire fence
thickly grown over with honeysuckle,
poison ivy, and wild roses
just beginning to open
into the loose sort of droopy garlands
an aesthetic young farmer
might drape around Elsie
or Dobbin.
....................Where the wire ends
and the knotted up, spiraling vines
paw toward more light, six slim
grey trunks of chokecherry
feather into leaves and
clusters of blossoming fronds
that lift and fall with the breeze
like diminutive mare's tails
--each separate flower a rose,
each separate flower
three-eighths of an inch of
white disk, radiant
about a head of yellow-gold stamens.
Beyond the chokecherries
and a rutted road, beyond
locusts posts and barbed wire,
a deepening pasture lights up
with ranunculus, "little frogs"
for some reason, lights up
--in fact--with buttercups
as clouds move sunlight around.
And beyond them, veiled
and perhaps faintly blue
in the distance, broadly
lit by the same shifting light,
four rounded green mountains,
on the nearest and tallest of which
someone has built a white silo
and low barn--or more likely
some kind of radar station
that talks all night to darkness,
some kind of early warning,
perhaps an observatory.
............................. ..........I'm
just happy to stand here,
and hold my vote close,
white-blinded and stupidly
gazing into random galaxies
and minor constellations, starbursts
of yellow-haired stamens
in white corollas.

Ladylove
There once was a lady by the name of Ladylove,
who was said to be a saint sent from above.
But no one knew just who she was;
a ghost indeed was she, was she.
She approached a swain one day, one sorrowful day;
stealing his heart as she ran away.
She left with a flutter in a moonlit still,
her beauty graces her for a splendid time.
She haste to a pond of midnight glow,
a lad soon followed as he watched her go.
She looked in his eyes with sadness there,
looking away as she's engulfed in light.
She step a foot in glistening water still,
meandering a swan not by will.
The boy he haste to grasp her hand,
letting his love guide as they shift to swans;
he a swan of black and she white,
they soar now into the ever moonlight.
The story now told of a love everlasting,
of two young swans, on moonlit casting.

Man Of Steel
Woman (Spoken):
Touch me
I'm so afraid to draw you close
Hold me
Before my hands fall away
I'll suffocate
If I can't breathe you in
And hold you there
Forever
Meatloaf:
I left a message at the hotel
They said you checked out
They said you ain't coming back
I tried to call you
But you turned off your cell
And it said at the tone
Just leave me alone
And I fall apart at the seams
It seems that I always, always fall apart
But as strong as I am
Why can't I break you heart?
I remember how it used to be
Making love to you all night long
I used to take you in my arms
And hold you there until all my strength was gone
I used to be a man of steel
I used to be a man of steel
I built this prison that I thought was a home
And we both lived here
Guess you were living alone
I'd tear it down if you would only have asked
And I would build you a bridge
So you could come back
And I fall apart at the seams
It seems that I always, always fall apart
But as strong as I am
Why can't I break you heart?
I remember how it used to be
Making love to you all night long
I used to take you in my arms
And hold you there until all you fears were gone
I used to be a man of steel
I used to be a man of steel
I used to be a man of steel
I used to be a man of steel
I used to take you in my arms
Girl:
Hey, now tell me why can't you just
Break my heart?
Meatloaf:
I used to be a man of steel
And I used to take you in my arms
Girl:
I love you right from the start
Now you can't tear my world apart
Meatloaf:
I used to be a man of steel
Now every bit of faith is gone
Girl:
You used to be so strong
Now you can't even break my heart
Meatloaf:
I used to be a man of steel
I used to take you in my arms
What's it going to take for us to break down?
And finally fall
Girl: Fall
Meatloaf & Girl:
Apart at the seams
It seems that I always fall apart
Girl: As strong as you are
Meatloaf: As strong as I am...
Girl: Why can't you break my...
Meatloaf & Girl: Heart

A Birthday Poem
Just past dawn, the sun stands
with its heavy red head
in a black stanchion of trees,
waiting for someone to come
with his bucket
for the foamy white light,
and then a long day in the pasture.
I too spend my days grazing,
feasting on every green moment
till darkness calls,
and with the others
I walk away into the night,
swinging the little tin bell
of my name.

The Strand
I saw my father’s face last week,
across the gulf of time..
I chanced upon a photograph
That you had left behind.
His hair shock white, his shoulders large
from years of heavy toil,
His eyes pale blue, his hands were rough
from working with the soil.
I thought I saw his face again
Across a crowded room
It must have been a trick of light-
a product of my gloom.
I saw my father’s face last night-
within a vivid dream.
We walked familiar streets of home
in forty year old scenes.
Long vanished homes and people
paraded through my head.
I did not choose to break the mood
or remind him he was dead.
I took my father’s hand last night
We walked a moon lit shore.
The beach’s sand was coarse and black
the surf a subdued roar.
The land behind was all I know,
But the Ocean beckoned me
So together, hand in hand,
We stepped into the sea.

Shes A Mystery To Me
Darkness falls and she
Will take me by the hand
Take me to some twilight land
Where all but love is gray
Where I can find my way
Without her as my guide
Night falls, Im cast beneath her spell
Daylight falls, our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn
And burn eternally
Shes a mystery to me
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
In the night of love
Words tangled in her hair
Words soon to disappear
A love so sharp it cut
Like a switchblade to my heart
Words tearing me apart
She tears again my bleeding heart
I want to run, shes pulling me apart
Fallen angel cries
Then I just melt away
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Haunted by her side
Its a darkness in her eyes
That so enslaves me
And if my love is blind
Then I dont want to see
Shes a mystery to me
Night falls, Im cast beneath her spell
Daylight comes, our heaven turns to hell
Am I left to burn
And burn eternally
Shes a mystery to me
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes...a mystery girl
Mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes...a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl
Shes a mystery girl

Dream Fable
I saw myself in a wide green garden, more beautiful than I could begin to understand. In this garden was a young girl. I said to her, "How wonderful this place is!"
"Would you like to see a place even more wonderful than this?" she asked.
"Oh yes," I answered. Then taking me by the hand, she led me on until we came to a magnificent palace, like nothing that was ever seen by human eyes. The young girl knocked on the door, and someone opened it. Immediately both of us were flooded with light.
Only Allah knows the inner meaning of the maidens we saw living there. Each one carried in her hand a serving-tray filled with light. The young girl asked the maidens where they were going, and they answered her, "We are looking for someone who was drowned in the sea, and so became a martyr. She never slept at night, not one wink! We are going to rub funeral spices on her body."
"Then rub some on my friend here," the young girl said.
"Once upon a time," said the maidens, "part of this spice and the fragrance of it clung to her body -- but then she shied away."
Quickly the young girl let go of my hand, turned, and said to me:
"Your prayers are your light;
Your devotion is your strength;
Sleep is the enemy of both.
Your life is the only opportunity that life can give you.
If you ignore it, if you waste it,
You will only turn to dust."
Then the young girl disappeared.

Bye Bye, Love
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think Im gonna cry
Bye bye love
Bye bye sweet caress
Hello emptiness
I know Im gonna die
Goodbye my love bye bye
There goes our lady
With a you know who
I hope shes happy
And old clapper too
We had good rhythm
(and a little slide)
Then she stepped in
Did me a favour
I threw them both out.
(mmm) goodbye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think Im gonna cry
Bye bye my love bye bye
(mmm) bye bye love (mmm)
Its gonna be a raining out of doors
(mmmm) hello happiness (mmm)
Goodbye my love goodbye
Now Im into romance
I shy away from love
Got tired of ladies (ooh ooh)
That plot and shove me
And thats the reason
We all can (see) so clearly
They see that our lady
Is out on a spree
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
Think Im gonna cry
Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello emptiness

The Raven's Song
My Love,
The nights have grown longer,
The days have become shorter,
Yet still the length of which I spend watching you.
So graceful and delicate,
Moving through the day watching in silence,
Bowing your head with solitude and knowing.
The way your white satin dress blows in the fall breeze,
Such white against such grey,
Why, my love, can’t I be like you?
Why can I blow through the wind so simply as a fallen leaf?
My tears fall gently for I long to be near you,
Though here I remain,
A black stain against your white,
An impossible friend,
An omen of sorrow and death.
Oh how you shine with your light of beauty,
Your understanding of life,
The way you live in a world that is so open and free.
Your movements captivate me in awe,
Your slow silhouetted body,
A panicle against the dusky grey of gloom.
Mist and fog wrapping around you as a blanket does a small child,
Such a simple life you must lead.
No cares or sorrows,
No pain or grief.
My dear love, I wish you could see me,
I wish I were not as blind to you as a sunset to a blind man.
Shed your light on my darkness,
On everything that I stand for,
People fear me, for who I am,
What I represent,
Why can’t you show them differently?
Maybe if you looked upon me they would see,
That my darkness can bring light,
My sorrow can bring love,
That my deep chasm eyes do not hold death or unwanted knowledge,
Please, love, for that is what you are,
A forbidden love whom I can never have,
If only for a day I could be reborn,
As A feather from your wing,
A beam of light from your grace,
The shine in your eyes that carry so much joyful remorse,
Be such to me that I could never be to thee.
Listen to my call,
As a deaf man listens to his heart,
Hear what I have to say my love,
Listen with your eyes,
For this is my lungful song to you,
From the Raven to the Swan.
