Rootless

Swept away on the ebbing tide
I long to stay but I must go
my wanderlust unsatisfied.

I go where the waters flow
(I have no choice I don’t decide)
The rolling sea has much to show.

Strange places where no men abide.
The frozen lands of ice and snow
where human needs can’t be supplied.

Sunlit isles where palm trees grow.
My urgent need won’t be denied,
there’s so much that I want to know.

I have to travel to and fro.
I ride upon the restless tide.
My ever moving friendly foe.

There is no place I can hide
She’d search for me both high and low
I can’t escape though I have tried.

She’s in control and she says no.
My mistress will not be defied
When she calls me I have to go.

Swept away on the ebbing tide.
I go reluctantly although
some part of me enjoys the ride.

Through the Metidja to Abd-El-Kadr

I

As I ride, as I ride,
With a full heart for my guide,
So its tide rocks my side,
As I ride, as I ride,
That, as I were double-eyed,
He, in whom our Tribes confide,
Is descried, ways untried
As I ride, as I ride.

II.

As I ride, as I ride
To our Chief and his Allied,
Who dares chide my heart's pride
As I ride, as I ride?
Or are witnesses denied—
Through the desert waste and wide
Do I glide unespied
As I ride, as I ride?

III.

As I ride, as I ride,
When an inner voice has cried,
The sands slide, nor abide
(As I ride, as I ride)
O'er each visioned homicide
That came vaunting (has he lied?)
To reside—where he died,
As I ride, as I ride.

IV.

As I ride, as I ride,
Ne'er has spur my swift horse plied,
Yet his hide, streaked and pied,
As I ride, as I ride,
Shows where sweat has sprung and dried,
—Zebra-footed, ostrich-thighed—
How has vied stride with stride
As I ride, as I ride!

V.

As I ride, as I ride,
Could I loose what Fate has tied,
Ere I pried, she should hide
(As I ride, as I ride)
All that's meant me—satisfied
When the Prophet and the Bride
Stop veins I'd have subside
As I ride, as I ride!

Swept

Be careful what you say,
Loose talk could sink this ship
Well the way that I am as weak as a lamb,
See it on my shaky lip
Theres more to these actions,
That you could ever know
With the moon and the tide Im drawn to your side
And moving with the flow
When its time to choose and its sink or swim,
I know Ill drown this time
When the cold wind blows and Im falling in,
Throw the line
Now Im swept,
And Im lost within my mind
On a love that makes me blind
And this feeling I just cant forget,
Now Im swept
On a tide thats in my soul
And this feeling that I have is losing me control
And I hope it doesnt end just yet,
Now Im swept
Mind over matter,
No matter where this mind will be
Theres more to be said, oh, for games in the head
Than anything youll ever see
Theres safety in dreaming,
So wrap me in things that I know
With my head in the sand,
Im at your command
And moving with the flow
When its time to choose and its sink or swim,
I know Ill drown this time
When the cold wind blows and Im falling in,
Throw the line
Now Im swept,
And Im lost within my mind
On a love that makes me blind
And this feeling I just cant forget,
Now Im swept
On a tide thats in my soul
And this feeling that I have is losing me control
And I hope it doesnt end just yet,
Now Im swept

Passive Resistance.

Beneath the sky, the restless sea
Was lapping at the shingle shore.
As it had often done before.
The shingle resists stubbornly.
It won't surrender easily.
And when tide ebbs will restore
The pebbles from its endless store.
Kept in reserve permanently.
The shingle beach lies passively
The sea is forced to come and go.
Although it act aggressively
When the tide is in full flow.
It will retreat reluctantly
When tidal energy runs low.

Solace For M lady Helen Unknown

The surging tides that ebb and flow
I watch them come I watch them go.

The rolling waters of the sea,
have freedom now denied to me.
But she still calls me constantly.

My only mistress was the sea
‘til I asked you to marry me.
The only way you would agree
I must say farewell to the sea.

I turned my back upon the sea
settled ashore reluctantly.
My love for you has anchored me.
You feared it understandably
but I still miss her terribly.

I watch the boats go out to sea
where in my heart I long to be.
I’ve done all that you asked of me
.Its only when we disagree
That I come here unhappily
to seek the solace of the sea.

Let It Ride

These are just the simple facts
I will relate to you
Though they are not connected
Each and every one is true
If they seem a bit untidy
Well unraveling them is fun
I will not stand corrected
I have not harmed anyone
I just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leave on the evenin tide
Just let it ride
When I listen to my heart
I sometimes fail to find
One sane and simple answer
On the bright side of my mind
Even when Im sleeping
I cant seem to unwind
I just let it ride
I knew a man from windsor
Who went to detroit every night
And stateside of the tunnel
Customs agents gave him flight
He threw his stash in the river
And his bedroll on the ground
And when they finally got there
A sleeping man was all that they found
He just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leavin on the evenin tide
Just let it ride
Hear the steeple bell ring out
Above my lobster pots
I might be out here fishin man
But that aint where it stops
The mouths I feed are many
And they all say thanks a lot
They just let it ride
One day when Im old and gray
n consider whats gone by
I always will be proud of
Every tear Ive ever cried
And all of the old jokes we told
Around the candle light
To all those tender damsels
Who had helped us through the night
They just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leavin on the evenin tide
Just let it ride
Im gonna let it ride
Heres to the girls of london
And the ones from montreal
We never will forget them
We still fantasize them all
I knew one in st. louis
On a missouri afternoon
I met one up in shanghai
And another in rangoon
I just let it ride
Ride let it ride
Leavin on the evenin tide
Just let it ride
Ride ride ride
Im gonna let it ride
Leavin on the evenin tide
Just let it ride

Reality's Assign

Lest it gets forgotten
I too have a ticking heart

All ropes I try and tow
yet get branded as an upstart

Didn't seem so in the beginning
with time it got known

Amongst multitudes I have to be in
still mostly I am on my own

Kin, friends and offspring
have their personal trails to be trudged

My susceptibility forever gets exploited
and my emotions get misjudged

To others I proffered panacea,
in their moments forlornly distressed

I kept waiting in expectancy
for my emotional hurts to get dressed

If this is what the deal presents
then I have no choice but to abide

But each ebbing tide is a precursor to,
a new wave for one to ride

Ultima Thule: The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls

The tide rises, the tide falls,
The twilight darkens, the curlew calls;
Along the sea-sands damp and brown
The traveller hastens toward the town,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

Darkness settles on roofs and walls,
But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls;
The little waves, with their soft, white hands,
Efface the footprints in the sands,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

The morning breaks; the steeds in their stalls
Stamp and neigh, as the hostler calls;
The day returns, but nevermore
Returns the traveller to the shore,
And the tide rises, the tide falls.

My Boy Jack

1914-1918

'Have you news of my boy Jack?'
Not this tide.
'When d'you think that he'll come back?'
Not with this wind blowing, and this tide.
'Has anyone else had word of him?'
Not this tide.
For what is sunk will hardly swim,
Not with this wind blowing and this tide.
'Oh, dear, what comfort can I find?'
None this tide,
Nor any tide,
Except he did not shame his kind-
Not even with that wind blowing, and that tide.
Then hold your head up all the more,
This tide,
And every tide;
Because he was the son you bore,
And gave to that wind blowing and that tide!

Waiting for You Everyday

Waiting for you
Tapped on the beach where the wave swept the footprints
The seashells rack their brains
How to attach to the ears to respond the tide?

Waiting for you everyday
At the moment that clearly divided the water and sky
The waters deeply separated
How to tide your figure over the sea
The sky is high above
How to flow your cloudy featuring

Does the water only alter its waves?
Does the sky really have no memories?
Whether it’s true or illusive, still
Waiting for you everyday
The moment in oneness of water and sky

Promises Unkept for friend Chad

The back streets of the city hide
a multitude of untold tales
The mean streets where the stench abides
of rancid dreams left to decay.

Far different from the countryside
the green hills and the pleasant vales.
Where simple country folk reside.
Fresh dreams emerging every day.

The city street may well decide
which man succeeds and which man fails.
The ebbing flowing surging tides
of little men who have no say.

The city fathers try to hide
(but their efforts are bound to fail.)
the city’s seamy underside.
Where petty criminals hold sway.

Some folks escape by suicide
and others fill the city’s jail.
There’s poverty on every side.
It seems the problems here to stay.

Here ideologies collide
But more is said than’s ever done.
The city has no cause for pride.
We’ve little choice but wait and pray.

The city fathers say they’ve tried
but I beg leave to doubt their word.
I’m totally unsatisfied
There’s jam tomorrow none today.

One Day for Michael

The Jetsam cast upon the shore.
The ebbing tide has left behind
I wonder where it’s been before.
I search to see what I can find.
Some small but worthwhile souvenir
which will repay the hours I’ve spent
in combing beaches far and near.
Some treasure lost by accident.
One day I hope to strike it rich
and find gold coins amongst the sand.
But Lady Luck can be a bitch,
she doesn’t seem to understand.
That gold’s no use beneath the sea
but I’d accept it gratefully.

It Came With The Threat Of A Waning Moon

It came with the threat of a waning moon
And the wail of an ebbing tide,
But many a woman has lived for less,
And many a man has died;
For life upon life took hold and passed,
Strong in a fate set free,
Out of the deep into the dark
On for the years to be.

Between the gloom of a waning moon
And the song of an ebbing tide,
Chance upon chance of love and death
Took wing for the world so wide.
O, leaf out of leaf is the way of the land,
Wave out of wave of the sea
And who shall reckon what lives may live
In the life that we bade to be?

Momentum

Til recently Death leaked
waters of wisdom wide
in Lethe’s sterile ditch, ~
left precious little guide
for generations which
absorbed vain preview sneak
of knowledge wells inside
the sum of learning rich
which might as base abide
to speed the future’s ride.

Tomorrow waits to speak
with unsuspecting tide
as waves of learning stitch
themselves together hide
little or nought, may hitch
ride at a rate unique -
momentum to provide
deep answers ~ what’s the glitch? ~
that mankind in its pride
may for the worst decide...

One, Two, No Free Ride.

One, two, their no such thing as free ride. So im just going with the tide. Just so i can swim back again. So many victims of circumstance and happenstance. Excuse me I'm just looking to get by. Women come and go. Nothing ever sticks. Guilt is just a heavy bag of bricks. I throw them to ground and keep moving on. One, two, their no such thing as a free ride. So I'm just going with the tide. Just so i can swim back again. Where is the need for forgiveness if we just live and let live. Every day I cross that bridge. One by one the planks go missing. And the only way back is gone. No time to regret or fret. Just build another. Its a system. you can work with or against it. But who even cares. One, two, their no such thing as free ride. So I'm just going with the tide. Just so i can swim back again. Money burns like you smoking them as cigarettes. The house you live in will be pillage and plundered in the event of your death. Makes you wonder. What is it all for. Well of course its because life is so very precious.

Nothing New under the sun

The sunlight shimmers on the sea.
Its light reflects from white wave crests
The waves which roll in endlessly
engaged upon their ceaseless quest.
Twice every day the tide comes in.
Twice every day the tide flows out.
It fights a battle it can’t win
That is the truth without a doubt.
The sea and land each have their place.
Although the boundaries can change
and very often leave no trace.
Except to make the shore look strange
Not quite the way it used to be
for it is changing constantly.
