Break Loose
I’m growing old disgracefully.
It is not eccentricity
but a decision I have made,
Though rules are meant to be obeyed
.
The time has come to be just me
and not the me you’d have me be.
Although perhaps you’ll fume and fuss
I do not give a tinkers cuss.
No keeping up appearances.
Seeking official clearances
to the things I want to do.
If you don’t like it you can sue.
No three piece suit and tie for me
I aim for comfort casually.
There’s no one who I need impress.
Removes the need to power dress.
What you see is what you get
I am quite real so don’t forget.
No man can say he is my boss
I cannot say I feel the loss.
Retired now completely free
to be the man I want to be..
I have no need to chase success
I never did I must confess.
I lived my life as I thought best.
I think I earned the right to rest.
I find that rest’s eluding me
and I have little time that’s free
It’s rather strange but now I find
I left the world of work behind.
I’m busier than I was before
I find that I am doing more.
More than I ever did at work
although I was not one to shirk.
Perhaps because I can refuse
to do the things of little use.
Which used to be required of me
by people in authority
of little use to anyone.
Not now those days are long gone
I’ve cast aside my public face.
The mask I used to keep in place.
So I can act disgracefully
and let whole world see it’s me.
So growing old disgracefully
Is much more fun than quietly
Just taking to my easy chair
and let the world forget I’m there.
There’s more to life than the TV
I want to live outrageously.
Its my intent to break the rules.
which rule the life of the poor fools.
Who think at sixty life is done.
Retirement is the time for fun.
I find I can enjoy each day
in doing things in my own way.
Take my advice and don’t think twice
retirement is very nice.
Cast off responsibility
grow old disgracefully like me.

The only Way to go.
Some choose to grow old quietly
but others take a different view.
They chose to live disgracefully.
Why should you give up having fun.
Because you’ve reached a certain age.
There are still things you haven’t done.
You want to do before you die
Though your time may be limited.
You see no reason not to try
To make your madcap dreams come true.
Why should you sit and vegetate
as other folks expect you to.
You are the captain of your fate.
So you can do what you want to.
Tomorrow may be far too late.
So do it now immediately.
Regardless of the consequence.
What does it matter anyway?
Society may not agree.
You have the right to your own view
Choose to act disgracefully.
You’ll find that life is much more fun
than sitting watching the T.V.
Show the world you’re still someone
Seize every opportunity
that life’s prepared to offer you.
To shock your neighbours thoroughly.
They choose to sit and wait to die.
You choose to do the opposite.
You won’t surrender easily/
But fight until your final breath
because it is your nature to
Although you know you can’t beat death.
You know that one day you must die
but until then you choose to live
Just as you wish disgracefully.

I'd Like To Age Disgracefully
I'd like to age disgracefully
And do all the things i like
Like eating biscuits while in bed
And riding naked on my bike
I think as we grow older
Then some things are left behind
Some with regret i have to say
But i think there's greater peace of mind
There's a returning to the playful
And an opening of eyes
Even if your energies
Are sometimes compromised
So, lets all grow old disgracefully
And let the young ones say
The day that i am older
I want to be that way.

A whole new ball game.
The time had come for me to go and leave the world of work behind
I was not sure, did not know how I would occupy my mind
To fill the long hours of the day. I knew some things I’d like to try.
But work had left small time for play and now there s was no reason why.
My times my own an I am free to try my hand at something new
from pottery to poetry and that is what I mean to do.
It may seem strange but now I find there are too few hours in the day.
To do the things I have in mind. I look at life a different way.
Retirement wrought a change in me I do the thing I want to do
I have no one to please but me. Something you can look forward to.
When you too leave the world of work behind. You’ll be too busy to regret.
The years you spent as a wage slave you’ll be quite happy to forget.

Abnormality
Abormality?
I suffer from a strange disease.
A most peculiar malady,
I do exactly as I please
I do not seek a remedy
I’m growing old disgracefully
it’s much more fun than being staid.
Revel in eccentricity.
I’ve no reason to be afraid
of what some people think of me.
All of the people I respect
accept a certain levity.
As for the rest I don’t expect
that they would dare not to conform
to what they perceive as the norm.

To Rest My Soul
With the passing of every day
Sure I see the parting of lovely way
Lot of change in the official life
Not less change in the actual life
Memory leaves to be kept in file
And to keep the life in distinct style!
End of sixty approaching fast
Work to be done is surely vast!
No more talks, no more notes
No more calls, no more quotes
No more meets, no more pains
No more meets, no more strains!
'No more file' is not 'no more life'
Brighter days to see better life!
The life is long and the world is wide
Lot of things to perform side by side
Society and home, kith and kin
Long forgotten and sent to the bin
Thread to be picked and work to be planned
Spread of good and bad sure to be scanned!
Fast life to go yielding place to new
Full of thrills and frills enjoyed by a few
I have my way, I have my goal
Fast I go to peace where I'll rest my soul!

Time, Perhaps
Time perhaps, for wonder –
to look around in awe
at how all that surrounds us
has somehow come about..
we who do not even know
how to grow a fingernail…
time perhaps, for gratitude –
for what we have already,
forgetting for a moment, our desires…
we who have forgotten
whom or how to thank..
time perhaps, for praise –
if not the Lawyer, praise the laws…
if not the lover, praise the love…
we who might become
praiseworthy through our praise…
time perhaps, for imagination –
to consider how things might be,
for then they might become…
we who have the world itself
inside us, just as much as that
great cosmos that’s out there…
time perhaps, for simplicity –
to pare life down to those things
which give us greatest joy –
and then, enjoy them all the more…
we who love complexity
when masquerading as the new…
time perhaps, for time –
to live a measured calm
of stillness, peace and rest
and find the joy there all the time …
we who ceaselessly invent
the labour-saving, and then find
ourselves a slave to these new toys…
time perhaps, to transcend time –
and live a timely life
of timeless joy; and know then,
all that’s not been mentioned here…
we who have yet to know
what human beings really are…

Unfulfilled Expectations
Three score years and ten: They say
is the life span of a man.
Though it's no longer true today.
People have realised they can.
Defy the dire predictions
and need not die obediently.
To suit the statisticians.
I‘m fast approaching ninety three.
And still live independently.
Growing disgracefully
content to act rebelliously.
Although the statisticians all agree
I should have died long years ago.
Which proves how little that they know

Without Them We Wouldn't Be Here
Ask yourself this question right now,
Is your view on your elders to mock,
If it is it's time ask yourself why,
You must put yourself in the dock.
To properly assess your role in this life,
Your history you just have to respect,
Those generations who have went before,
On them take some time to reflect.
Would you seek advice from your elders,
Or does the thought of that leave you cold,
Life is short so don't ever forget,
One day you yourself will grow old.
Throughout history our Mothers and Fathers,
Have encouraged their offspring to learn,
That the gift of life you must treasure,
The respect of all others you must earn.
Do you really know your Grandparents,
If not you must ask yourself why,
The knowledge they've gained is invaluable,
They also have an unlimited supply.
When they impart their vision of life to you,
Wisdom comes to the one who listens,
Our elders are worth far more than you think,
Remember it's is not just gold that glistens.
They also had parents who loved them,
If they've passed do you know their location,
Find out where they've been laid to rest,
It's a search which will bring such elation.
You'll then find it highly rewarding to find,
You're but a branch on a very large tree,
That generation gap will be cast to the side,
The knowledge gained will set your mind free.
Finally you'll have learned the meaning of life,
Age should never be used as a barrier,
We are all growing old from the day we are born,
Of that message you are now the carrier.
That question you posed will be answered,
Your life will become crystal clear,
We've a lot to thank our elders for,
‘' Without Them We Wouldn't Be Here ''

These Are The Days Of Our Lives (feat. Lisa Stansfield)
(feat. Queen)
Sometimes I Get The Feelin'
I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids, when we were young
Things seemed so perfect - you know?
The days were endless, we were crazy - we were
Young
The sun was always shinin' - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - i just don't know
The rest of my life's been - just a show.
Those were the days of our lives
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing is true-
When i look and i find, i still love you.
You can't turn back the clock, you can't turn
Back the tide
Ain't that a shame? (ain't that a shame?)
I'd like to go back one time on a roller coaster ride
When life was just a game
No use sitting and thinkin' on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids
Sometimes it seems like lately i just don't know
Better sit back and go - with the flow
'Cause these are the days of our lives
They've flown in the swiftness of time
These days are all gone now but some things remain
When i look and i find - no change
Those were the days of our lives
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing is true-
When i look and i find, i still love you
I still love you
I love you
I still love you
I still love you
I still love you
Still love you

In My Time
(copyright nazareth, tiflis tunes,inc.-ascap)
In my life theres places Ive seen,
Places Ive been in my life.
In my life theres things I have done,
Times I have won in my life.
Ships I have known,
Winds that have blown.
In my time were people who cared,
People who shared in my time,
Welcomed the good accepted the bad,
Enjoyed what I had in my time.
People Ive known
Times on my own
And now Im growing old,
In memory I can hold
My picture book unfolds and i
Can feel myself grow cold.
In my life theres times to forget,
Things to regret in my life,
May have done wrong but tried to do right
I followed the light in my life,
But now the lights grow dim,
My days are closing in.

Mother & Father (Peter's Re-Invention Mix)
There was a time I was happy in my life
There was a time I believed I'd live forever
There was a time that I prayed to Jesus Christ
There was a time I had a mother
It was nice
Nobody else would ever take the place of you
Nobody else could do the things that you could do
No one else I guess could hurt me like you did
I didn't understand, I was just a kid
[Bridge:]
Oh mother, why aren't you here with me
No one else saw the things that you could see
I'm trying hard to dry my tears
Yes father, you know I'm not so free
[Chorus:]
I've got to give it up
Find someone to love me
I've got to let it go
Find someone that I can care for
I've got to give it up
Find someone to love me
I've got to let it go
Find someone that I can care for
There was a time I was happy in my life
There was a time I believed I'd live forever
There was a time that I prayed to Jesus Christ
There was a time I had a mother
It was nice
[bridge]
[chorus]
My mother died when I was five
And all I did was sit and cry
I cried and cried and cried all day
Until the neighbors went away
They couldn't take my loneliness
I couldn't take their phoniness
My father had to go to work
I used to think he was a jerk
I didn't know his heart was broken
And not another word was spoken
He became a shadow of
The father I was dreaming of
I made a vow that I would never need
Another person ever
Turned my heart into a cage
A victim of a kind of rage
I gotta give it up
[repeat twice]
[chorus]
Find someone that I can care for
Find someone that I can care for
I've got to give it up
[repeat five times]
I've got to let it go
I've got to give it up
Oh mother, oh father
I've got to give it up
I gotta give it up
[repeat six times]

Pre-Retired
Well I'm almost there ya know
that full retirement kinda place.
I'm not old enough to collect any money
can't find a job, with age lines upon my face!
So I guess I'm pre-retired?
I don't have another name, yet for it!
But if this is what retirement is like
where all you do is, just write poems and sit!
Then I'd rather be ten feet under
or something sorta like that!
I use to have a great figure
now all I am is a ball of, pre-retired FAT!
Wife still is working full time
and she looks a lot better than me!
She stays out all night after working
with her girlfriends, not me!
I'm boring I guess, and feel out of place
no real purpose felt anymore.
I use to be a manager of twelve employees
in a large, retail discount store!
So don't tell me about retirement!
and how great it is for you!
It stinks to be pre-retired
and think when my full retirement comes
It won't feel anything like you!

Hide & Seek
There was a time when there was nothing at al
Nothing at all, just a distant hum
There was a being and he lived on his own
He had no one to talk to, and nothing to do
He drew up the plans, learnt to work with his hands
A million years passed by and his work was done
And his words were these...
Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see
Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see
Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
So she had built her elaborate home
With its ups and its downs, its rains and its sun
She decided that her work was done, time to have fun
And she found a game to play
Then as part of the game
She completely forgot where shed hidden herself
And she spent the rest of her time
Trying to find the parts
Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see
Hope you find it in everything, everything that you see
Hope you find it, hope you find it
Hope you find me in you
There was a time when there was nothing at all, nothing at all
Just a distant hum

Bitterness....
if you believe that freedom is
absolute, that is
you always have the power to choose
every inch, and
variety, much always to your liking,
you are wrong
(forget poetry for once
forget this hiding place
forget this secret garden
where you are growing your
own set and color
of flowers
choosing well the weeds
and rock
focused on inner freedom
and this quest for originality and
independence)
when you were thrown into this world
your brain was just a pea
your fingers appear like insignificant commas
in a sentence
in another context you are sentenced
to a prison
not of your liking of course
involuntary
validated coercion
for instance you are born to poor parents
a not so well developed skull where you little brain grows
sporadically
you are thrown into a place
of the slums and
polluted air
where people kill one another for a dime
or even for free
on a tripping
you consider yourself still lucky
you are still alive
that is consolation enough
hmm
you proclaim
for things that i cannot change i leave them
but there are those that i can still change
you will change the world?
you cut the grasses, clean a path, walk,
you work hard in school
devoting yourself to studies and thinking
ponderous soul
you finish a course
you marry the right woman
find the right work
and you say i am wrong
you make a difference
you have progressed
self-made man
dignified, honored,
praiseworthy
then you laugh at me and say
'you see i am now free'
and you expect me to be silent and
say i am sorry i am wrong
look at you
your face is now twisted
your legs are not rooted to the ground equally
one leg is higher than the other
you practiced dancing all your life
dancing to life's demands
tiptoeing like a ballet dancer
the circus man on a tightrope
trying to please
those kings and queens
the system
hammered you to a lot of compromises
and on their standards
most of you have become distorted
your chin is bending towards your ear
your lips bloat like a dead fish
you have scars in your forehead
stitches on your neck
Mr. Frankenstein
Pooh!
ah, indeed you are free now
and behind you, this sour and bitter old man
is holding his laughter
for i think
i will have the last laugh
until i find my eternal rest
six feet under
if they ask me to come back
it is definitely a big
and uncompromising No.
Sorry, i don't believe in anything else
forgive me, but not even myself
This agnostic too doubts himself.

Growing apart you couldn't see
Your not the man I want to be
Stale mate time it was over
All the while destroying each other
One thing I'd like you to know
I want my own life so let me go
All the years obeying the rules
Your game of life is played by fools
Just let me go, just let me fo
I can't feel nothing for you
But what is left for me to do
No cause for concern, we live & we learn
I'll just say goodbye
Search deep I have to find
The truth that lurks within my mind
Your words you used to drown me
Are washed away I'm free to be
Just let me go, just let me go
I can't feel nothing for you
But what is left for me to do
No cause for concern, we live & we learn
I'll just say goodbye
Now we're apart can you see
I'm now the man I want to be

Think of home
Home
When I think of home
I think of a place where theres love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing
Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning
Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin the scene, makes it all clean
Maybe theres a chance for me to go back there
Now that I have some direction
It would sure be nice to be back home
Where theres love and affection
And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
Time be my friend, let me start again
Suddenly my world has changed its face
But I still know where Im going
I have had my mind spun around in space
And yet Ive watched it growing
If youre listning god
Please dont make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?
Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So its real, real to me
And Ive learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love
Like yours
Like me
Like home...

We Live In An Ageist Society
We live in an ageist society where ageing people are treated as second class
Where the ageing man and ageing woman are seen as inferior to the young man and the young lass
And the older you get life gets harder the future belong to the young
And so many on retirement pensions are lonely, forgotten and unsung.
They worked hard for to raise their children but they will end their days in a retirement home
And their children don't visit them often 'twould seem that their usefulness they have outgrown,
One might say they've had a good innings though nothing easy came their way
And I do not find it consoling to think their lot will be my lot one day.
I fear growing old more than I fear death their last few years so few enjoy
But I suppose that there is consolation to know that the wealthy too grow old and die
And life too will go on without them their money will not keep them alive
The Reaper one day he will claim them though to an old age they survive.
We live in an ageist society and ageism is on the increase
One can feel happy for the dear departed at least they can now rest in peace
Rejected in their old age and lonely with only their good memories left to recall
And only the Reaper awaits them the Reaper who waits for us all.
