He always expected that God would intervene,
To prevent business failure after Biblical 40 years.

Twenty days are barely gone,
I was merry all the day.
Folly was my butt of scorn.
Now the fool myself I play.
Wit and learning ruled my head,
Logic and economy.

Taught me only vanity.

Trust in man was lost today

Shearing With a Hoe
The track that led to Carmody's is choked and overgrown,
The suckers of the stringybark have made the place their own;
The mountain rains have cut the track that once we used to know
When first we rode to Carmody's, a score of years ago.
The shearing shed at Carmody's was slab and stringybark,
The press was just a lever beam, invented in the Ark;
But Mrs Carmody was cook -- and shearers' hearts would glow
With praise of grub at Carmody's, a score of years ago.
At shearing time no penners-up would curse their fate and weep,
For Fragrant Fred -- the billy-goat -- was trained to lead the sheep;
And racing down the rattling chutes the bleating mob would go
Behind their horned man from Cook's, a score of years ago.
An owner of the olden time, his patriarchal shed
Was innocent of all machines or gadgets overhead:
And pieces, locks and super-fleece together used to go
To fill the bales at Carmody's, a score of years ago.
A ringer from the western sheds, whose fame was wide and deep,
Was asked to take a vacant pen and shear a thousand sheep.

I Had A Dream 2
I had a dream many years ago;
countless people would know my name
and many would appreciate
all the things I did.
As the years turned into a score,
I wondered if my dream
was only just a dream
and reality had something else in store for me.
Another score of years went by,
my dream began to lose its glow,
and the dark fringes of reality
slowly began to step in.
My dream seem to be an outcast now
something you didn’t associate with,
but it left among the embers
hot coals to ignite the flame again.
More years now went by
totalling to almost half a century
when the dream began to ignite
and become reality again.
The stars don’t seem so far out of reach
and the mountains not so hard to climb,
but was the journey worth it
now questions linger on my mind.
In the wastelands of my past
lie things I will never get back.
The bitter pill of payment for whatever
I may receive from my dream.
