Herman Melville

The Marchioness Of Brinvilliers

He toned the sprightly beam of morning
With twilight meek of tender eve,
Brightness interfused with softness,
Light and shade did weave:
And gave to candor equal place
With mystery starred in open skies;
And, floating all in sweetness, made
Her fathomless mild eyes.

Sweetness and Light

Anything’s possible, Sweetness and Light,
Maybe you’ll leave me lonely,
Maybe you’ll stir like a shade in the night
To turn to your one and only,
On a fine morning you’ll probably say
‘I’ve looked at you once too often…’
And I’ll look in vain for the signs and the tides
Of your looks and your voice to soften.

Anything’s possible, Sweetness and Light
Maybe you’ll leave me never,
Maybe I’ll grow in your mind and your sight
‘Til I fill your horizons forever.
On a fine evening you’ll possibly say:
‘You know that I’ve followed your star.’
And I in my turn will take Sweetness and Light
To the Sweetness and Light that you are.

Twilight

The visions dancing in my mind
The early dawn, the shades of time
Twilight crawling through my windowpane
Am I awake or do I dream?
The strangest pictures I have seen
Night is day and twilights gone away
With your head held high and your scarlet lies
You came down to me from the open skies
Its either real or its a dream
Theres nothing that is in between...
Chorus:
Twilight, I only meant to stay awhile
Twilight, I gave you time to steal my mind
Away from me.
Across the night I saw your face
You disappeared without a trace
You brought me here, but can you take me back?
Inside the image of your light
That now is day and once was night
You lead me here and then you go away.
Repeat chorus
(you brought me here, but can you take me back again? )
With your head held high and your scarlet lies
You came down to me from the open skies
Repeat chorus
Twilight, I only meant to stay awhile
Twilight, I only meant to stay awhile
Twilight, twilight, twilight, twilight.

Turning Off The Lights

you say, you love light, its brightness
that reveals what had long been denied to you
by darkness,
you take it, and raise it and put it at the higher place
for that should be how it must be
everything is now obvious and you begin to see
the truth, and you say, at first, that this is beautiful,
and good, and you preach about light, its brightness,
you want all those that love you to have them too

time changes, seasons come and go, tastes not just sweetness
but bitterness, this is also truth, but this is not good,
this is ugly, and all the scenes pass before your eyes,
your parents, and brothers, they are carried by this rage
of the river of time, there was thunder and lightning at the background,
there is too much lighting, and you begin to dislike
what light has given you, brightness has become too harsh
for such a short life,
there is panic and fear now, you want to run but all the doors are closed,
and the windows refuse to open,
the clouds make the rain, and rain does not stop,
the sun still shines, no promises are broken, all for your love of light,
its brightness, now getting too sharp and too jagged, they hurt

you sit alone, you let the rain flood over you, you dislike water
there is too much of it, just like light, flooding over your senses,
they are no longer good, they are so ugly,
but what can you do? you wished for it and now it is given for free.

forgetting has taken your beloved away. Such a cruel goddess.
Now you are alone. You remember the night of sound sleep.
You remember when you said, once when we were small,
You want all the lights turned off, light hurts, and you cannot sleep.

and so, i turned off all the lights now. I shall not tell you anything.
You need sleep and dreams shall be there to comfort you.

The Lamb

Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?
Gave thee life & bid thee feed
By the stream & o’er the mead;
Gave thee clothing of delight,
Softest clothing, wooly, bright;
Gave thee such a tender voice,
Making all the vales rejoice?
Little Lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee?

Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee,
Little Lamb, I’ll tell thee:
He is callèd by thy name,
For he calls himself a Lamb.
He is meek, & he is mild;
He became a little child.
I a child, & thou a lamb,
We are callèd by his name.
Little Lamb, God bless thee!
Little Lamb, God bless thee!

The Adoration of the Wise Men

Saw you never in the twilight,
When the sun had left the skies,
Up in heaven the clear stars shining,
Through the gloom like silver eyes?

So of old the wise men watching,
Saw a little stranger star,
And they knew the King was given,
And they follow'd it from far.

Heard you never of the story,
How they cross'd the desert wild,
Journey'd on by plain and mountain,
Till they found the Holy Child?
How they open'd all their treasure,
Kneeling to that Infant King,
Gave the gold and fragrant incense,
Gave the myrrh in offering?

Know ye not that lowly Baby
Was the bright and morning star,
He who came to light the Gentiles,
And the darken'd isles afar?
And we too may seek his cradle,
There our heart's best treasures bring,
Love, and Faith, and true devotion,
For our Saviour, God, and King.

I Am Not Afraid Anymore In The Dark

yes, there is nothing to fear in darkness
nothing
is there anyway, nothing to feel in this emptiness emptying itself
like evaporating water into vapor
in space like a bag of dust spreading like feathers
in openness

you feel empty you feel the void wriggling inside your
guts
your mind floating so lightly like a dream in your sleep
like a mist
of the mountain
like a mist
of the green fields early morning
like a mist
floating in an open sea where a man paddles his life on his small wooden sail

be excited as i am excited about you
tipsy
in spirits of the red wine
and feeling so light so empty like a ray of light like a smoke rising from
a cigar
filling the room filling your chest

be excited as i am excited about you
emptying
like a window opening to the skies to see some shooting stars like eyes
gazing to an open ricefield
emptying wondering to so much wisdom now rushing back to you
like a door opening
for an incoming guest
like a crevice of your wall letting in a ray of light telling you
that morning with the sun
is coming

oh be excited as i am excited about you as i watch dawn turning into
day
oh, i am so happy seeing the void expanding

how much can you really hold on the next step after so much void?
oh i am so excited!

The Mystery

Let go into the mystery
Let yourself go
Youve got to open up your heart
Thats all I know
Trust what I say and do what youre told
Baby, and all your dirt will turn
Into gold
Let go into the mystery
Let yourself go
And when you open up your heart
You get everything you need
Baby theres a way and a mystic road
Youve got to have some faith
To carry on
Youve got to open up your heart
To the sun
You know hes looking out for you
cause hes the one
Let go into the mystery
Let yourself go
There is no other place to be
Baby this I know
Youve got to dance and sing
And be alive in the mystery
And be joyous and give thanks
And let yourself go
I saw the light of ancient greece
Towards the one
I saw us standing within reach
Of the sun
Let go into the mystery of life
Let go into the mystery
Let go into the mystery
Let yourself go
Youve got to open up your arms
To the sun
You know youve got so many charms
Its just begun
Trust what I say and do
What youre told
And surely all your dirt will turn into gold

Earrings.

Earrings,
That I bought you
On Christmas Eve.
Sparkling in duet
With your eyes,
Hypnotise.
Fragrant candles
A festive spirit
Do weave.
As fireside flames
Chase hidden shadows
I fantasize.

With earrings,
You were adorned.
When our hearts danced
At our restaurant rendevous.
Blue, enhanced,
Like droplets
From your soul.
You glittered
As sunlit morning dew.

I stole
The scented softness
Of your cheek.
With a kiss.
Bathed in an evening
Of mystique,
Our unbridled bliss.

Yet sweetness
Of the memory stings.
Circumstance
Then cut our wings.
And you never again
Wore those blue earrings.

Sleep Well Angel Sweetness

Sleep well angel sweetness
Find your place in dreams
Keep well within your mind
That nothing's as it seams.

This night angel sweetness
You have opened up my eyes
You have changed in form
Beyond the storm and opened up the skies.

Sleep well angel princes
In your kingdom's shade
Keep well within your boundaries
The time allowed to fade.

Sleep well angel dearest
Moon beam maiden of this realm
Keep steady in your hand the dreams
Which keep you steady at the helm.

Sleep well angel sweetness
Find your place within the clouds
Beyond the reach of savage men
Beyond the gathered crowds.

Let us dance beyond the moon
Allow us time to sing
Let us dance upon the moon
Allow us love to bring.

Let us swim the ocean sky
Allow us love to know
Let us fly and never sigh
Above worlds of porcelain snow.

My love for you sweet angel
Knows no boundaries in its kiss
Sleep well angel dearest
Upon a cloud of heavens bliss

Rest your head a moment
Just one moment in descent
Allow us time to kiss the moon
The future, past and present.

Let us swim the ocean sky
See angels dreaming there
Let us swim and never sigh
Run fingers through their hair.

Sleep well angel dearest
Below the clear moon sky
Embrace all it is you fear
Could bring tears to your eyes.

Embrace the day that beckons you
For it is as each moment the birth
And death of all creation.

Light In Your Eyes

Something's happenin'
cause everything's different,
but everything is fine, yeah
Cause this is the good stuff
and yesterday is only what you leave behind
it's only in your mind
Chorus:
You gotta talk to the one who made you
talk to the one who understands
talk to the one who gave you
all that light in your eyes
all that light in your eyes
There's no use pretendin'
you (or it) never existed
til you saw the light, yeah
Cause you're just beginning
you haven't missed it
it's only in you,
and you know what to do
Chorus:
You gotta talk to the one who made you
talk to the one who understands
talk to the one who gave you
all that light in your eyes
all that light in your eyes
If the world wasn't the way she is now
you'd be mysterious
she's got more use
and give it to me
When nobody's happy
that's not the world outside
where everybody hides
Chorus:
You gotta talk to the one who made you
talk to the one who understands
talk to the one who gave you
all that light in your eyes
all that light in your eyes
You gotta talk to the one who made you
talk to the one who understands
talk to the one who gave you
all that light in your eyes
all that light in your eyes
Yeah, thank you, thank you
yeah, everything will stop
yeah, thank you, thank you
for the light in your eyes
yeah, thank you, thank you
yeah, everything will stop
yeah, thank you, thank you,
for the light in your eyes
for the light in your eyes

Jacobs Ladder

Words by neil peart, music by geddy lee and alex lifeson
The clouds prepare for battle
In the dark and brooding silence
Bruised and sullen stormclouds
Have the light of day obscured
Looming low and ominous
In twilight premature
Thunderheads are rumbling
In a distant overture
All at once,
The clouds are parted
Light streams down
In bright unbroken beams
Follow mens eyes
As they look to the skies
The shifting shafts of shining
Weave the fabric of their dreams...

For A Marriage Of St. Catherine By Hans Memmelinck

(In the Hospital of St. John at Bruges)
MYSTERY: Catherine the bride of Christ.
She kneels, and on her hand the holy Child
Now sets the ring. Her life is hushed and mild,
Laid in God's knowledge—ever unenticed
From God, and in the end thus fitly priced.
Awe, and the music that is near her, wrought
Of angels, have possessed her eyes in thought:
Her utter joy is hers, and hath sufficed.
There is a pause while Mary Virgin turns
The leaf, and reads. With eyes on the spread book,
That damsel at her knees reads after her.
John whom He loved, and John His harbinger,
Listen and watch. Whereon soe'er thou look,
The light is starred in gems and the gold burns.

Sonnet to Twilight

Meek Twilight! soften the declining day,
And bring the hour my pensive spirit loves;
When o'er the mountain slow descends the ray
That gives to silence and to night the groves.
Ah, let the happy court the morning still,
When, in her blooming loveliness arrayed,
She bids fresh beauty light the vale or hill,
And rapture warble in the vocal shade.
Sweet is the odour of the morning's flower,
And rich in melody her accents rise;
Yet dearer to my soul the shadowy hour
At which her blossoms close, her music dies:
For then, while languid Nature droops her head,
She wakes the tear 'tis luxury to shed.

The usual afternoon walk

Flying sparrows, worry they do not
About what to eat about what tomorrow
Shall be, God tells us, so that
We humans, his servants, his children,
His friends, need not worry too

We know that we are spoken of that
God’s love and goodness
He feeds the sparrows from the grains
Of this field, he makes them drink from
The rain, he gives them all the sweetness
From the fruits of the trees
He had given them limitless skies
Where they can all fly
He had given them nests
For them to call home in all the nights
And storms

I walk today on this path, after a hard day’s work
I like to think
Reassuring ideas as these
God’s love and kindness
I like to see
These birds flying again around me in this
Usual afternoon walk
When the sun is about to set
On these walling mountains
How wonderful to see this scenic view!
How good the feeling to see the sparrows again1
Though I cannot hold and touch them
The softness of their feathers
The agility of their small wings
The lightness of their bodies
Their quick soars and dives and light landings!

I guess. Now, I am also feeling fine
This light body, the small wings of my soul,
The flight of my thoughts, soaring and diving and lightly landing
to the hands of my God
In the twilight of these dusky skies.

Holy Blunder

Clouds in the skies; clouds in the skies; clouds, clouds
Clouds in the skies; some clustering; some cluttering
Some straying; some strewing; all in one yonder
Like free floating vices and flouted virtues

Amongst myriad murky Stygean stratus
One cumulus, shining bright and smiling white
Like a lucky rich man amongst fated poor
Leering, jeering, raving in sway and sashey

“My one misdirected beam made him gleam”
Bemused waning God Sun, “how this happened
Of one breed are all clouds; running in them same
Vapour-blood; façade is due to my light shed”

“Oh! Idiotic white clouds! This is not good!
Don’t swagger because of my one holy blunder
On the day apocalyptic winds wiggle
Every cloud has to melt down into drizzle”

Mystery Woman

By gregg allman and daniel toler
(c) 1980 emi blackwood music inc.
Well I dont know, if I dreamed it.
I dont know, might be real.
Lord, its so strange, how one will find another,
But I keep on searchin, cause I know youre out there,
And all I gotta do is open my eyes and see her - the mystery woman.
Cause Im confused, but only sometimes.
Patiently waiting, baby just for you.
But Ill be leavin, babe, I wont go under.
All I gotta do is open my eyes and see her - a mystery woman.
If I have to chase her, all around the country.
Well Im bound to find her somewhere, and thats no lie.
Aint it strange, how one will find another,
But Ill keep on searchin, cause I know youre out there,
All I gotta do is open my eyes and see her - a mystery woman.
All I gotta do, is open my eyes and see you - my mystery woman.
Hey, yeah - my mystery woman.

The Illusion

As I was walking in the dark,
A glimpse of light i saw,
My eyes opened with amusement,
I giggled with all glee,

The brightness unspoken,
The light so perfect and rare
I thought i saw an angel,
Behold an illusion yet i believed,
Something made out of nothing,
Believing a lie, departing reality

The illusions of a lonely man,
Walking in the dark without aim,
Hopeless and helpless,
Finding love and seeing care,
Finding beauty in the ugly places,
Proving all wrongs to be right

Yes my eyes deceived,
Yet until the day approached,
When light lightened light,
My eyes became more open,
Yes it was an illusion

From A Blue Cloud

From a blue cloud at the two o’clock
And out of the rain,
With a long step and a swift nod
The master came.

Swinging behind him a painted box
In an old and tattered bag,
He watched my eye on the mystery box
And sat on a damson rag.

Under the pleat of his purple cloak
Was the Queen of petty spades,
‘We’re off to the end of the rainbow, Jack
To the long, black end of days.’

Ducking the light of the morning star
We hid in a tulip bed,
But caught the beam in a bottle-jar
To light the way ahead.

The master took some tinsel foil
To shake on the fairy phlox,
He said: ‘You can have the Queen of Spades
Or the painted mystery box.’

I chose the Queen, who dredged a pit
To place the box within,
He tipped his hat with a weary nod,
‘I’m on my way again.’

Now often I notice the Queen of Spades
Look long and long at me,
With a sad smile, she whispers on:
‘Oh what, and what might we? ’

While I still watch for the blue cloud
And the two o’clock bus,
In hopes that he and the mystery box….
He never does!

The Philosopher To His Love

DEAREST, a look is but a ray
Reflected in a certain way;
A word, whatever tone it wear,
Is but a trembling wave of air;
A touch, obedience to a clause
In nature's pure material laws.

The very flowers that bend and meet,
In sweetening others, grow more sweet;
The clouds by day, the stars by night,
Inweave their floating locks of light;
The rainbow, Heaven's own forehead's braid,
Is but the embrace of sun and shade.

Oh! in the hour when I shall feel
Those shadows round my senses steal,
When gentle eyes are weeping o'er
The clay that feels their tears no more,
Then let thy spirit with me be,
Or some sweet angel, likest thee!

How few that love us have we found!
How wide the world that girds them round
Like mountain streams we meet and part,
Each living in the other's heart,
Our course unknown, our hope to be
Yet mingled in the distant sea.

But Ocean coils and heaves in vain,
Bound in the subtle moonbeam's chain;
And love and hope do but obey
Some cold, capricious planet's ray,
Which lights and leads the tide it charms
To Death's dark caves and icy arms.

Alas! one narrow line is drawn,
That links our sunset with our dawn;
In mist and shade life's morning rose,
And clouds are round it at its close;
But ah! no twilight beam ascends
To whisper where that evening ends.

Couldn't Get Away

I walked along the avenue,
I never thought i'd meet a girl like you.
Meet a girl like you.
With auburn hair and tauny eyes;
The kind of eyes that hypnotise me through,
Hypnotise me through.
And I ran.
I ran so far away.
Couldn't get away.
A crowd appears above your head.
A beam of light comes shining down on you.
Shining down on you.
The crowd is moving near us still.
Aurora borealis comes in view.
Aurora comes in view.
And I ran.
I ran so far away.
I just ran, I ran all night and day.
Couldn't get away.
You started him to touch your face,
You're slowly disappearing from my view.
Disappearing from my view.
You started him to try again.
I'm floating in a beam of light with you.
A beam of light with you.
And I ran.
I ran so far away.
I just ran.
I ran all night and day.
And I ran.
I ran so far away.
I just ran.
I ran all night and day.
Couldn't get away.
