Tender Buttons [a Light in the Moon]
A LIGHT IN THE MOON
A light in the moon the only light is on Sunday. What was the sensible decision. The sensible decision was that notwithstanding many declarations and more music, not even notwithstanding the choice and a torch and a collection, notwithstanding the celebrating hat and a vacation and even more noise than cutting, notwithstanding Europe and Asia and being overbearing, not even notwithstanding an elephant and a strict occasion, not even withstanding more cultivation and some seasoning, not even with drowning and with the ocean being encircling, not even with more likeness and any cloud, not even with terrific sacrifice of pedestrianism and a special resolution, not even more likely to be pleasing. The care with which the rain is wrong and the green is wrong and the white is wrong, the care with which there is a chair and plenty of breathing. The care with which there is incredible justice and likeness, all this makes a magnificent asparagus, and also a fountain.

Hope enlivens
Many months had to roll on
To ignite her feeling for me,
Many more, to fan her desire,
Some more, to let her know my intention
And still more for her inclination.
Then it became an open secret,
Both moving each coin
With known intention.
Trysts took place with mates present.
Notwithstanding her freeness,
Notwithstanding her passion
And notwithstanding occasions,
She refused to budge further.
The parting came sooner.
It turned a fruitless crop,
While continuing to flower.
I still water for a miraculous fruit.

Contact itself is the pleasure
The sustained interest is there
In contact with an intimate friend,
Notwithstanding the absence
Of any corporal contact.
The gratifying interest is there
In contact with a flirting woman
Notwithstanding the eluding
Corporal contact of her.
Gather, not to grieve.

Value of a husband is unequal.
A wife’s love for her husband is supreme,
Infidelity notwithstanding,
As no one can replace him equally
To take care of her and give her status.

What is the cloud to the sun?
For what is the cloud to the sun,
It is nothing. The wind has always
Driven it away and the sun does not
Care. For want of love and care, the
Cloud plays with the fields and the
River and the sea. Impregnated it
Has conceived, and gives
Birth to the rain. The fields and the
Sea and the rivers feasted. The fields
Grow the grass and the flowers.
The sea and the rivers have
Seeded its waters with more fish.
The cloud does not like it. It has
Always dreamt of the sun but the
Wind has always blown it away.
At night the cloud talks to the moon.
And seeing the likeness of its light
To the sun that it loves, the cloud
Makes love with the shining moon.
It has given birth to the stars.
The following morning, the cloud
Is exhausted. It floats with the
Chastisements of the wind. There
Is no more direction. It still dreams
Of the sun. It dies and becomes
Taken as part of the wind. The
Cloud has become a white, clear
Sky. It is nothing. It is what you
See, when love is unrequited.

A Single Identity
Notwithstanding how you view the morn,
Or see the sunrise and the dawn,
Over the high mountain Alps,
Or over the vast blue sea, or desert sand,
The sky shall be and always retain,
Its one single identity!
Notwithstanding how you share your
heart,
Or break it up into many parts,
And share its love with many or few,
Your heart shall be one and the same,
A single heart it shall remain!
No matter how you live this life,
Through your childhood, manhood and
old age,
And live through all its different stage,
Your life shall be one, just the same!
Since only one life is your due,
Live it well and then bid adieu!
Let us then share our lives and our hearts,
As we share the sky with life on earth,
And with mankind let us maintain,
A single identity forever retain!
Notwithstanding these setbacks, the dream of a beautiful American orchestra goes on, and I share Dr. King's faith that each year we move inexorably closer to a magnificent opening night.
