When I once knew
When I once knew
a girl sitting next to me in the pew
(as my girlfriend and later my wife)
I thought that life was great
and I saw her smile
every now and then
and in a while she sang
sweet as a bird
but destiny and life separated us
and the years rolled on
where we live a thousand miles apart
and when we met again
we were still the same,
but different and more mature
and then maybe sure
about were our different careers
were leading us
l’Envoi
and now with our prime devoured
by the passing years
and time still running on
much I have learned
and maybe too little I know
of the heart of a woman
who still loves me
while we live apart.

Lament
When I was but a primary school boy
I would play with a girl
as my mate
and she had freckles
close to her nose
and red hair swishing
in a neat ponytail
and I would blush
when she gave me
a innocent kiss
and my heart
would miss a beat
and we would share our sandwiches
or eat each others
and to me that girl was really neat.
When I got a little older
I was really shy, when a lovely girl
caught my eye
and I would walk her home
after class
and we would talk
about our dreams
and go together to the library
and for a swim at the town pool
and she would watch me
doing athletics and playing rugby
and I would watch her
playing netball
and sometimes I would surprise her
with a rose or two
or with some chocolates
and get some French kisses
and her blue eyes sparkled
and she was more than just cool.
When I was in metric
I met a beautiful girl at the beach
where she was tanning
and her eyes devoured me
and I was full of confidence
and electricity leaped between us
and that summer holiday
she taught me a thing or two
and that girl
was honest and lovely
and her way of living
still lingers in me.
When I was a young man
and called up to the army
and went to war
having to kill a man or two
in order to survive and stay alive
I grew up pretty quickly,
knew about integrity
and staying true
and when my girlfriend left me
to immigrate overseas
my world was falling apart
when I met a beautiful captain
right there in a military camp
while preparing for war
and she seduced me
and more than that
we made love
as if there’s no tomorrow
and shared some secrets
with each other
before I had to go
and she disappeared
while still being dear to me.
At university I met the girl
of my dreams
and it was magic
when she liked me too
and falling really in love
was great
with the person
destined for you
and I wrote her some poems,
gave her some cards, chocolates
and expensive perfume
and every look, every touch, every kiss,
every embrace was the best
that I have ever had
and we got engaged and married
and at my first job
a colleague at work
became my so called friend
and he had to have her
at any cost
and then I lost her
and went to stay
a thousand miles away.
Working I had a choice of girls
but yearned for the one that I had lost
for a period of years long,
but another gorgeous girl found me
and she was my sunshine, my rain,
my breakfast, my lunch and dinner
and we lived a thousand years
in the short time that we had
and if my life was destined
only to be happy with a girl like that
it had been well worth the living
as she was dedicated to me
and like no other would ever be,
but destiny rolled its dice
and I lost her to death
very suddenly
and met a girl with two boys
just older than toddlers
and for years tried to built
a life with them,
but she cheated me
time and again
and left me
for another lover
and tried to ruin me
with the leaving.
Then I met a girl
who was a painter, musician
and poet
and I tried to connect
with her soul
and what was between us
went much deeper
than mere looks,
and when we broke up
I couldn’t understand why
and I still wonder
how she now feels about me?
l’Envoi
And now all those days have gone bye
and I would be happy
to have a Sunday wife
who knows how to be true
even if we have to pray night and day
and even if angels
would come from her womb
as long as she really loves me.

Ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
And you know it makes me sick to be on that list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
You say youre gonna burn before you mellow
I will be the one to burn you
Whyd you have to go and pick me?
When you that we were different, completely
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
Im another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
Your wildness scares me
So does your freedom
You say you cant stand the restrictions
I find myself trying to change you
If you were meant to be my lover I wouldnt have to
And I feel so mean, I feel in between
cause Im about to give you away
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend (for someone else to take)
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend (am I making a mistake? )
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them (all the time that we
Spent) I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girl, friend
Im another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
Im another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
Im about to give you away for someone else to take
Im about to give you away for someone else to take
We keep repeating mistakes for souvenirs
And weve been in between the days for years
And I know that when I see you Im going to die
I know Im going to want you and you know why
Its going to kill me to see you with the next girl
cause Im the most gorgeously jealous kind of ex-girl
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girlfriend
I hope I hold a special place with the rest of them
I kinda always knew Id end up your ex-girl friend
Im another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed
Im another ex-girlfriend on your list
But I should have thought of that before we kissed

Crime of Life
Life seems but a memory of years
Gone by too fast.
Before we can live the present,
The future is the past.
Tomorrow is yesterday;
An instant is today.
The present is just a pause
Along past's fleeting way.
Seconds tick, days go by
And years bow out of sight.
Time speeds on as days are born;
Then devoured by each night.
Mankind's curse is overlooked
By Old Father Time, who steals
Our precious gift
With life's most hideous crime.
This crime of life is in its passing;
The days, the years that fleet by.
Almost before a chance to live,
It seems we're given a chance to die.

Sorrow
I walked into the park and saw a young man sitting by a flower bed
I asked him why he looked so miserable and this is what he said,
“Sixty years ago I fell in love with a beautiful girl and now she has to die
I knew her time would come one day, but the years have just flashed by.
I knew that it was wrong to love her, but my heart ruled over my head.
I was there when she was born at home and I stood by her mother’s bed.
As the years passed I watched over her, and proposed when she was sixteen.
She was so young and beautiful then, and everyday we lived a dream.
She didn’t know that I was different and I just couldn’t bear to tell her so,
but she had suspicions as her hair greyed, and my age didn’t show.
And now my heart is breaking because I want to die and be with my wife,
without her my life isn’t worth living, and I no longer want this life.
For sixty years life has been wonderful for me and my only true love,
but soon I must take her up and leave her in the heavens above.
I don’t know how I’m going to take the woman I adore from my side.
I’m sorry for sharing my sorrow with you, ” and as he left he cried.

Golden Years
he finally reached his golden years
wanted to leave his family,
thoughts and love to share.
so he sat with pen in hand
wrote about his lifes plan.
it started off with just his dream
never expecting the unforseen.
as his plans began to unwind
he found himself lost in time.
he joined the army at an early age
this was to become the setting stage
he survived the street gangs and a war
and never talking about what he saw.
he managed retail businesses all his life
met the woman who would become his wife.
he had always loved children
so he thought it was time
his wife agreed and it turned out fine.
a beautiful little girl came into their life
and everything seemed twice as nice.
now he had two women who captured his heart
and knew right then, that this was the start.
the start to his golden years
with his wife he could share.
all the dreams that were meant to be
was now becoming a reality.
but the years was going by fast
he knew his dreams would not last.
now with this thought in mind
he decided it was time
to put his life in perspective
for the golden years to become effective.
so he changed his train of thoughts
a late retirement he would abort.
he retired before his time
so he could enjoy life the way
that it was meant to be
living happy and carefree.
now that he finished writing
down his thoughts and plans
he let them know
'YOUR PERCEPTION BECOMES YOUR REALITY'
and this is what mine was to me.
the golden years are now mine
and i'm lost in its time.

Destiny
Sometimes I think I've lost my mind
I thought I'd left my past behind
I live my life and all I know is
Follow your dream and don't let go
No one can live for me
No one can see the things I see
I walk this road no one can tell me how to be
It's my destiny
There is no right, there is no wrong
There is no place where I belong
I've done my time I've held a strong end
My life is all about this song
No one can live for me
No one can see the things I see
I walk this road no one can tell me how to be
It's my destiny
If I threw it all away, would it change? (No)
I would live my life again, will you arrange it?
There is a magic in my heart
That I feel
Don't you know that God is love
And it's real
La la la la la la la...
No one can live for me
No one can see the things I see
I walk this road no one can tell me how to be
It's my destiny
My destiny
My destiny
My destiny
It's my destiny

The voice
Woman whom I loved once,
now you call me, tell me
that you have changed through the years.
Can it really be you, you who were really lovely?
In the picture, that I have in my head
with an angelic smile, big green eyes with brown spots
you look even more pretty than before?
Or is it only in my mind that I still see you
or a nightly dream that you are in
or a apparition walking in my garden
in the early morning fog?
l’Envoi
Thus I stumble forward
as if in a dream, seeing the morning glories opening
and everything looks so much like spring
and the early morning air brings your scent to me
and somehow I know that the voice that I hear
is really yours and sincere.

The Best Is Yet To Come
Each new generation tend
to think they are so cool!
At just about the time
they graduate from school.
But what can they know?
They have just begun
They've barely started,
and the best is yet to come!
They have miles and miles to go,
before they even know
It was just a phase
one little act, in the human show!
And many, many times,
before their race is run,
They'll see that it was true
the best was yet to come!
It takes young adults awhile,
to settle into careers.
And there's bound to be some tough times,
in those working years.
There will be good times, and bad times,
before those years are done.
But they can always take heart,
for the best years are still to come!
Life may be very good
or it may throw us many curves.
Life is uncertain
we may not get what we think we deserve.
But it always will be better,
if we will just keep in mind
The best is yet to come
just give it some time!

Three points of view experimental C&C
Him
My wife is beautiful to me.
But I am prejudiced you see.
I see the beauty deep within
Beneath the lines writ on her skin
by passing years but they can’t hide
The beauty which resides inside.
Her
My man is old and bent and gray
He didn’t always look that way
I see him as he used to be
but I am prejudiced you see
I see him in the prime of life
He is my man I am his wife.
Children
Although we three have always known
our Mum and Dad as being old.
Getting older as we have grown.
The memories we have and hold.
We tend to see them as they were
but somehow they seem smaller.
Dad’s not the man he used to be
but Mum is aging gracefully.
Dad may be looking old and bent,
to Mum he is magnificent
and he still thinks her wonderful.
His life time love and beautiful
Our parents taught us all they knew.
What we learned was how to
love and to live the way we should.
Though we have done the best we could
There is no way we can compare
to such a perfect pigeon pair.
We’re proud of them they’re proud of us
Though none of us kick up a fuss.
We know and we know they know
That in due course they both will go.
but leave behind a legacy
Love given unconditionally.

Destiny and death
Love is something you can’t control
Love can appear in great ways
But it can disappear in horrible ways
One day you love your soul mate
The next you don’t
It’s sad
You can’t do anything
You can’t escape destiny
Some are born to live happy
Others are born to live alone forever
But there are some who escape destiny
Get married be happy
…
For days/months/years
But destiny will come back
And hit you so hard that you lose everything
And the one you where in love
Gone
Money
Gone
Friends
Gone
Job
Gone
No more life
That’s why you shouldn’t run away
You have to face destiny and say:
…
…
Screw you
I’m making my own life
With or without you
I don’t care
.
After the fresh start as a bum
You start doing the job you always dreamed of
Have a real soul mate that never leaves you
When destiny wants’ to show up
After years of happiness
Death will ring at your door
Don’t shut the door
Greet him in
Tell him you want to say goodbye to your family
And then leave with him in a new place

On Joe White's Ninetieth Birthday
So many he knew in his younger years to life have come and gone
But like the great man that he is Joe White keeps on keeping on
Ten years short of his century in his ninetieth year of life
I remember him and his daughter daughter Bibi and his now long deceased wife.
He and his wife and daughter went to live in America many decades ago
But they returned to Ballydaly to live amongst old friends they did know
He has done his share of travelling but the love of home is strong
And he is back in Tubber where he feels he does belong.
One of the elder citizens of the Parish of Millstreet
He is as nice a person as one could wish to meet
I have fond memories of him and of his ready smile
He is one of those nice people that I've not seen for some-while.
In the Wallis Arms in Millstreet Town for him a surprise party where a great night was had by all
And I bet at the happy gathering old times they did recall
Joe White has turned ninety and enjoying his lengthy life span
And it truly can be said of him that he is a gentleman.

Learning How To Smile
Five miles outside of Vegas when
we broke down
Threw my keys into that window
and we never looked back
We got all drunk and sloppy on a
Greyhound bus
We passed out cold so
All the losers
They were laughing at us
I will never let them break
your heart
I will never let them break me
We got lost in Phoenix
seemed like such a long time
Seven months of living swimming
On those thin white lines
I did some time
for selling acid to the wrong guy
Life just keeps on getting smaller
And we never ask why
Why there is no perfect place
Yes I know this is true
I'm just learning how to smile
And that's not easy to do
I know there will come a day
When we can leave
And just go running away
(ooh yeah)
we were broke outside of Philly
when the storms came
I was working in New Jersey
Hitching rides in the rain
You was happy talking dirty
at that phone sex place
Life just keeps on getting
weirder for us every day
You say there is no perfect place
I say I know this is true
We are just learning how to smile
And that's not easy to do
We both live for the day
When we can
Run away
Ah baby we can leave
And run away
We can leave this place
And run away
We can leave it all behind
Just like we do everytime
Yes we both live for the day
When we can leave
And just go running away
No I will never let it break
your heart
No I will never let it break me
Five miles outside of Vegas
Five years down the line
We got married in the desert
In the sunshine
I can't handle all the hell
That happens everyday
When you smile and touch my face
You make it all just go away
Yes I know there ain't no
finish line
I know this never ends
We are just learning how to fall
And climb back up again
I know there is nothing perfect
I know there is nothing new
We are just learning
how to live together
me and you
You know I live for the day
When you say

On & On (Mersey Song)
Out through the foggy window there just to see the eyes of my future children
looking back at me back through the foggy window
on and on miles pass years turn over
on and on there from that rolled down window ponies run free
cradled protectively there in the greenery somewhere I keep this picture
on and on miles pass years turn over
on and on for all the roads we've travelled
and all the bridges burned I was thinking out loud the ways
of the world that all seem so constant how few
of the lessons we really have learned.
out through the foggy window frozen in frame capturing passing pictures
life's last refrain, memories ashes scatter
on and on miles pass years turn over
on and on

My Friends Back In My Prime Years
My friends back in my prime years I never did disown
It's just that I live far from them and apart we have grown
We drank and played football together but our separate ways we've gone
And we have forged new friendships and life of course goes on.
My friends back in my prime years may now look a bit gray
And they might not know me or I might not know them if by chance we met today
In my memory they have remained young but in reality
The years have left their mark on them as the years have left their mark on me.
Old father time the aloof one to anyone doesn't bow
And some of my friends of my prime years may be grand parents now
Perhaps they now are showing their age and time has left them slow
They could run fast as I recall some twenty years ago.
My friends back in my prime years I may now not recognize
For time leaves it's mark on all of us I've come to realize
I drunk beer with them in the pub and with them played football
And that was many years ago as I can well recall.

Old Joe was Bingo mad
I once knew a bloke called Joe
who was addicted to playing Bingo
he played nearly every day of his life
which cost him his marriage and his wife.
But Joe just could never pack it in
even though he hardly ever did win
as soon as he got out of his bed
the thought of Bingo came into his head.
The biggest win he ever had was sixty quid
and even then he shared it with his pal Sid
but Joe said one day he'd win the jackpot
and then he'd go and live somewhere hot.
But his long suffering wife called Flo
said she'd had enough of his silly Bingo
she shouted to Joe so what's it going to be,
your stupid addiction to playing Bingo or me?
But sadly Joe was now too far gone to care
when Bingo was on he just had to be there.
But alas Joe never won the Bingo jackpot
and he never ended living somewhere hot
the most he won was that sixty quid
and even worse Flo went off with his mate Sid.
I heard that Joe passed away playing Bingo
but I know that's how he would have wanted to go
I bet old Joe died with a smile on his face
because at least to Joe he was in the right place!

The Elopement
'A woman never agreed to it!' said my knowing friend to me.
'That one thing she'd refuse to do for Solomon's mines in fee:
No woman ever will make herself look older than she is.'
I did not answer; but I thought, 'You err there, ancient Quiz.'
It took a rare one, true, to do it; for she was surely rare -
As rare a soul at that sweet time of her life as she was fair.
And urging motives, too, were strong, for ours was a passionate case,
Yea, passionate enough to lead to freaking with that young face.
I have told no one about it, should perhaps make few believe,
But I think it over now that life looms dull and years bereave,
How blank we stood at our bright wits' end, two frail barks in distress,
How self-regard in her was slain by her large tenderness.
I said: 'The only chance for us in a crisis of this kind
Is going it thorough!' - 'Yes,' she calmly breathed. 'Well, I don't mind.'
And we blanched her dark locks ruthlessly: set wrinkles on her brow;
Ay - she was a right rare woman then, whatever she may be now.
That night we heard a coach drive up, and questions asked below.
'A gent with an elderly wife, sir,' was returned from the bureau.
And the wheels went rattling on, and free at last from public ken
We washed all off in her chamber and restored her youth again.
How many years ago it was! Some fifty can it be
Since that adventure held us, and she played old wife to me?
But in time convention won her, as it wins all women at last,
And now she is rich and respectable, and time has buried the past.

Nell Barnes
They lived apart for three long years,
Bill Barnes and Nell his wife;
He took his joy from other girls,
She led a wicked life.
Yet ofttimes she would pass his shop,
With some strange man awhile;
And, looking, meet her husband's frown
With her malicious smile.
Until one day, when passing there,
She saw her man had gone;
And when she saw the empty shop,
She fell down with a moan.
And when she heard that he had gone
Five thousand miles away;
And that she's see his face no more,
She sickened from that day.
To see his face was health and life,
And when it was denied,
She could not eat, and broke her heart --
It was for love she died.

These Words Too Say What Love Was
ATHESE WORDS TOO SAY WHAT LOVE WAS
These words too say what Love was-
Though I am long from that love and those feelings-
Once there were songs in the night and great passion
And we were a kind of happiness that only the very blessed know-
I had dreamed of such love for so long
And you in your beauty were all Beauty could ever be-
We loved for a long time
And in that love I learned forever that Love is real-
But somehow in a way I will never understand
For you that love died-
And I was left loving without being loved
And had to go a long time in the pain of longing for you again-
But that was long long ago
And now where our love is no one can ever know
For it is only in memories that cannot truly capture what it really was-
Love it is true is the most beautiful thing we know
And I knew this with you
And will be grateful for it forever-
Though the nights the many years of nights in the long time that has passed say
There are other feelings by which we live and kinder quieter loves also -
O passion of my life oh destiny long gone oh Love I will never know again,
Do you blame yourself at all as I long ago have forgiven you
For abandoning the Beauty of our Life for long sad years of concentrated mindfilled gladnesses?

Illicit Love
Are you lonely, my love
the love of your life
loves another man?
Are you in pain, my love
the love of your life
needs the other man?
Does your heart ache, my love
the love of your life
cannot forget that man?
Do I hurt you, my love
when I say to you
I can't get over that man?
Can you accept - my love
the love of your life
thinks of the other man
always, all the time?
No - I am not the other woman
in his life - as nothing works
between us...
yet I keep thinking of him
feel so deep for him
and yes - my love
wish to marry him
bed him and beget him
children...
like every woman does
for the man she loves...
Is it too much of a sin, my love
to love more than one man?
Tell me - my love
why do I need him so much
miss him every moment
of my lonesome life
being your wife
I need the husband in him
And yet - I know
I cannot do without you
I cannot choose him over you
do I forget him
and forgive myself
for the sin of being in love
with two men in my life?
Tell me - my love
how do I do this?
I am directionless...
feeling down and out
my heart in pieces
wish I could share
my life with you
and him.
Too much for the asking
I suppose...
I am being avaricious
and may be impractical
Tell me, my love
when was love pragmatic
when was love logical?
when did people say
love had a lot of rationale?
Love was always blind
blind as a bat
love feels with the heart
mind doesn't work
And here I am, my love
at your door-step
in your home
beside you, in your arms
loving you and yet
pondering over him...
Why did God give me so much pain?
Why did He fill my heart with
adulterous love?
Why did Destiny bring me
to this cross-road?
Why do I have to choose
between the two of you?
Sometimes I feel
that I could do
with neither of you
for both of you
are so precious to me
I cannot hurt one
and please the other...
They say: Love is pure,
pristine a feeling
complete devotion
and adulation
for the one man
a woman always loves
and loves for ever...
but what happens to the love
a woman feels for the man in her life
and the other man outside?
Is it so sinful a feeling?
Is it so detesting?
Do all the women
in this world
love only one man
through all their life?
And all the men
just think of only one woman:
their so-called wedded wife?
So many questions
in mind
for a heart that loves
and loves and loves...
the two men
in a woman's life
Any Answers...
