Walking home from town
The sulphur sky stretched from horizon
to horizon above me
without a cloud to be seen
or a speck of a single bird,
just the blazing white-hot sun
frying down in the breathless hot air
while we walked from town,
being without a car
and your iris coloured purple blouse
and denim blue mini skirt
more than suited you
and you looked cool as ice
while the sun was squelching me
and little streams of sweat
was running down my face,
my chest and arms.

Coming In To Harbour
Well I dreamed I saw you sailing in upon a sleek white schooner
You were slipping over shallow water
You were coming into harbour, you were coming into harbour
With the wind in all your sails
You were carrying a cargo that was richer than riches
More gold than gold and much more real than real
New born babe in your arms and his cool blue eyes gazed up
Yes his cool eyes gazed upon a fresh world, one yet to be made
I was standing on the shoreline looking out over the sea
And I saw your white sail appearing on the horizon
I was standing on the shoreline just looking out over the sea
And I saw your white sail appearing on the horizon
You were coming into harbour, you were coming into harbour
In the bright light, the bright light, longer than the 20th century

Without The Chase
August 31,2009
Pink to blue, to yellow,
to monstrous purple clouds looming on the horizon;
My horizon, layed out before me.
I step out, look up and it flies away.
You fly away. I jump for you
and I am leaping, bounding,
stretchng beyond my limits into pink and blue,
and pink and blue.
But you're gone.
I settle again, shrug, and look
to the monstrous purple clouds.
I could fly away without the chase,
theres just no desire for me to have it any other way.
I blink, and look up again to purple,
lavender, yellow, clouds of the deepest grey.
Dusk settles.
All of a sudden, I can hear everything.
Crickets, every far off chirp in trees.
I smile as I step back in.
Back into sheltered silence.

Just Over The Horizon
Just over the horizon
there's a love that waits for me.
Just over the horizon,
the place that I can't see
is where we'll meet again my love
and then we will be free
to share again the warmth of love
to shine upon our face.
I look toward that horizon
somewhere out in space.
I am comforted in the knowing
that what I felt with you
is burning brightly every day
right beyond the blue.
There is no end to a love like ours.
There's only another start.
So wait for me, my sweet one
until I do depart
and travel over the horizon
to meet you with a kiss.
It will all come together for us
into eternal bliss.

Worry Keeps Every Wrinkles
tangle sweat scratches every minutes
facing each direction, without limit
tell the night comes, where hope
stood withstand in the falling
perfume of the day
dried me in the sun, that catches
the humid cool breeze, thou nothing is
gone except the running face down
into the ground where i stand
a little discomfort browse my tired face
looking tame but wild, stubborn yet
calm, watching the horizon with puzzle
eyes telling the whole day to rest

An African experience (in reply to Agostinho Neto)
That night it looked as if
the whole of the horizon was ablaze,
men were beating the fire throwing huge shadows
waving with arms outstretched
with the acrid smell of burning palms trees
filling the night air
and the fire was still spreading.
A row of Bailundu were carrying their possessions
were already fleeing, running away
as if they could outrun the blaze,
chased on by a strong wind
the kind of thing setting the hearts,
the minds of men alight,
taking possession of everything
and raising fear in non-believers
of party politics of freedom
by force, by the barrel of the gun
and even the coloured girl
reddening her face, using rouge
smiling at the mirror
felt the prickles of fear
going up and down her spine
thinking that maybe she wasn’t black enough
but let the though go
as her lovely body had proofed enough
its value up to now
and the sleepless man, thinking about eating utensils,
the care of his whole family
got out of bed and watched the horizon,
the red sky anxiously, afraid that the fire
was going to consume his house
and he wanted nothing but peace
but the far off shots of blazing guns
drawing closer, of mortar bombs exploding
and rocket shells hitting destroying,
had him in a frenzy of fear
and the silhouettes coming from the horizon
wasn’t of people killing fire, or dancing to the music
of marimbas,
it was the signs of a vicious civil war
coming nearer and nearer
with a consuming blaze
and soon the whole country
would be on fire,
burning from shore to shore
in a destructive war
that would leave its people shattered
in poverty and with starvation,
with legs shot off by landmines.

Blazing in Gold and quenching in Purple
228
Blazing in Gold and quenching in Purple
Leaping like Leopards to the Sky
Then at the feet of the old Horizon
Laying her spotted Face to die
Stooping as low as the Otter's Window
Touching the Roof and tinting the Barn
Kissing her Bonnet to the Meadow
And the Juggler of Day is gone

Sweetly Drunk and Always In Love
When you dream
Of a lovely, long skirt
And a soft, white blouse;
When you’re mesmerized
By feminine eyes
That turn their gaze
Away from your face
Until you become
Child-like and sad;
When the slightest words,
Even of consternation,
From her bird-like voice
Is the greatest music
You’ve ever heard,
Then you realize
You’re sweetly drunk
And always in love.

Jane and Bullfinch Eggs
Those are Bullfinch's eggs
Jane said
pointing at
the 5 eggs
in a nest
hidden in a hedge
and as she pointed
you imagined
that some god
modelled all female fingers
on that before you
how the nail was set
so perfectly
on the finger's tip
the colour pinkish white
the skin almost blending in
we mustn't disturb
she added
or the mother bird
will fly away
and not return
oh right
you said
gazing at the eggs
once her finger
had been removed
from the hedge
you studied
the pale blue eggs
speckled there
and sensed her presence
near your cheek
the lavender
that she wore
the way her hair dark
coming to her shoulders
was tied back
from her face
some collect them
Jane said
and pierce the top
and bottom
and blow through the contents
and have them on display
do they?
you said
seeing the sad expression
she wore
why is that?
you asked
she stood back
from the hedgerow
and looking at you
with her dark eyes
said
because they must have
they have to collect
what is there
for all to see
they must just have
for themselves alone
the May sun
was shining warm
and she took your hand
in hers and walked
you on along the lane
the small stream running
by the lane's edge
her grey skirt
and white blouse
and white socks
giving her a plain look
but her eyes lit up
and she smiled again
and you wanted
at that moment
as she held your hand
for that hour
to be there forever
not to be lost
thinking you knew then
the depth of love
and not its loss
of that
and feeling sense
and not the cost.

Angel In The Sky
I walked home last night
as the dark clouds of night descended.
There above the horizon I saw
a cloud shaped like an angel
with its wings outstretched,
gliding serenely across the sky.
I had no way of knowing
which way the angel was going
only that before too long
she immersed within the other clouds
that stretched across the sky
and disappeared forever
in the heavens above.

The Summer Recess of 62.
It was the second day
of the summer recess
and Judith and you
walked through the field
behind her house
and sat down on the grass
the sky above blue
like an upside-down ocean
with the white clouds
like small fluffy islands
and she said
Mother doesn't trust you
why not?
you asked
she doesn't trust any male
she says they're all after
the one thing
you looked at her
sitting there beside you
her hair brown and curly
and her eyes blue
and bright
and you said
not all males
are the same
she looked up
at the sky
and said
I know but that's
how she sees things
my mother likes you
you said
she says you're good for me
keep me focused
she smiled
and lay back
on the grass
and you lay
beside her
and turned
to look at her there
taking in her profile
and she turned
to face you
and she said
does your mother
trust us to be together?
sure she does
you said
an airplane
went over the sky
a sparrow hawk
hovered above
its eyes watching
and waiting
you put your hand
on her hip
and she placed
her hand on yours
you felt her hipbone
beneath her green skirt
moved your palm
gently over and over
she moved your hand
off of her hip
and said
just in case
mother's looking at us
from the upstairs window
would she?
you asked
of course
she said
she held your hand
and took it
and laid it
on her breast
her heart
somewhere beating
your hand sensing
the softness beneath
the white blouse
and she said
just as well
she never saw us
last Christmas
and you smiled
and remembered
and the sparrow hawk
flew off through the sky
and the sound
of a distant train
and your heart thumping
like the downpour of rain.

The Flat Horizon
(wang chung)
I wanna paint your portrait in bright color
I wanna paint the lines in red and blue
I wanna make your eyes appear like starlings
Saying, darling, I love you!
I wanna set your face upon a landscape
I wanna show the love and toil and sweat
I wanna show your beauty like a crystal
In an all-night launderette
Chorus:
Oh this line is the flat horizon
And you are the shape on the left
Oh this line is the flat horizon
And this is the sun in the sky
Oh this line is the flat horizon
And makes the great divide
Between heaven and angels
And earth and men
I wanna show what lies beneath the surface
In little squares of purple, green and gold
So everyone can see their own reflection
In the mirror of your soul
I wanna paint your arrogance and beauty
I wanna paint the way you laugh at me
I wanna paint the world in which I see you
Fixed for all eternity
Repeat chorus
I wanna paint your portrait in bright color
I wanna paint your personality
I wanna show the world just how I see you
I wanna show the world just how I see you
You know that only I can guarantee you
Precious immortality
Precious immortality
Repeat chorus

Whenever I Run
Ive seen that darkness on the edge of town
The sun come up and the rain fall down
And Ive been a fool, yeah Ive been around
And when the world got too much for me
I took off and left a memory
Thinking Id find something better for me somehow
Oh but now
Whenever I run
Instead of running into the blue
I follow my heart
And there in your arms
Is where I find the love I need
And the best is yet to come
Baby youre the one I run to
I used to quit when it got too tough
Throw in my cards when I was down on my luck
But baby you mean too much to me
So now
Whenever I run
Instead of running into the blue
I follow my heart
And there in your arms
Is where I find the love I need
And the best is yet to come
Baby youre the one I run to
I never could stay in one place too long
I never could stand that still
Ah but you changed so much in me
And now I know I will
Im gonna stay where the love is right
Im so tired of being a bird in flight
Good love takes work
Ah but thats alright
Thats alright
Whenever I run
Instead of running into the blue
I follow my heart
And there in your arms
Is where I find the love I need
And the best is yet to come
Youre the only one
Instead of running into the blue
I follow my heart
And there in your arms
Thats where I find the love I need
And the best is yet to come
Baby youre the one I run to
The one I run to
The one I run to

Beyond the horizon
sea and sky
the horizon
casting the line
beyond is god
marking this life
from the next
to understand
where we go
after this life
we can go chase
the horizon
seeking knowledge
it is a trip
and not a desination
the pleasure
is in the sea
of experiences
unraveling each
new mystery
beyond the answer
hides another answer
beyond the horizon
another horizon

In a coffin
Hands folded over the chest
she lies forever stretched out
as if death out of the blue holds her calm
and nothing will wake her up,
from the last sleep folding coldly round her
and strangely changed from princess to rotting dirt.
Hands folded over the chest
she lies forever stretched out.
with no fingers clenching hot around mine
and drawing me nearer,
no arms embracing me to her body
and I am totally alone
and stare at hands folded over her chest.

Loneliness of the Soul
Loneliness of the soul is a journey without a destination
A journey that one takes alone no hand to hold
Walking her distance but nothing in sight
You see her horizon yet it’s untouchable
Loneliness of the soul is like the ocean
Blue and beckoning deceptively comforting
Calm yet a torrent rages beneath her cool surface
You see her horizon yet it’s unreachable

Not Always What We Seek
After you'd got on
the school bus
and sat down
in one of the side seats
Jane said
who did you fight with
in the playground
lunchtime?
Woolgar
you said
he pushed me over
against the wire fence
and I got up
and went for him
she looked disappointed
I didn't think
you could be violent
she said
I'm not usually
but it was an automatic
response to being
pushed over
you said
my daddy said
one should turn
the other cheek
especially if you're a Christian
she said softly
the school bus
started up
and took off down
the school drive
sorry
you said
but the creep
got under my skin
and if you let them
get away with it once
they'll always do it
she gazed at you
then out
of the window
at the passing shops
and buildings
of the town
were you watching?
you asked
yes I saw you
from the girl's playground
she muttered
not looking round
guess it looked
kind of bad
yes it did
she turned
and looked at you
but at least
you don't do it
all the time
she said
and touched
your hand
with hers
and you felt sad
inside that you'd
made her feel like that
and you saw
how lovely her
dark eyes were
how there seemed
to be a mini universe
in them with their own
galaxies and stars
and moons
next time I'll think twice
you said
before hitting
the other boy
she nodded
and smiled
and her hand
squeezed yours
her skin soft and warm
her hair black
and drawn back
into a ponytail
sitting there
beside you
her grey school skirt
and jumper
and white blouse
the neck open
the sight
of her throat
and you wanting
to kiss but not doing so
her neck
her skin
the feel
of her hair
against your cheek
sometimes
you thought
we can't have
what we seek.

The Last Day Of Military Leave
I returned early from pass to the camp
at Natal Command in Durban
right opposite the beach,
went in to stow my kit
and on that late weekend afternoon
the camp was almost empty
with only a few guards
and probably skeleton staff running it
and I drove out on my motorbike
in civilian clothes,
parking it near a cinema,
was walking to a restaurant
to have a decent meal
when a bevy of lovely girls
walked right up to me
and offered to buy me a drink or two
as it was clear that I was in the army
as my hair was short and I was young
and there were five of them
with every single one dressed in a mini skirt
or something very sexy
and I had a cider, some of them beer, champagne,
vodka martinis and whatever they fancied
and we were rather jolly
and we talked and later walked out on the beach,
seeing the setting sun, the bright rising yellow moon
and that night was really something
but when it got romantic, there were five of them
and only one of me.

Between the Now and Then
Upon horizon, night to day ~
there between the now and then,
I often pause along the way,
to tiptoe through the moonlit glen ~
or perhaps take in sun's light,
night to day ~ day to night.
Upon horizon, day to day ~
there between the then and now,
as seasons grow along the way,
to crease the face of timely brow ~
or perhaps steal time away,
day to day ~ day to day.
Upon horizon, day to night ~
there between the now and then,
I stand beneath my autumn light,
bereft as memory calls again ~
to pain the heart with bygone sight,
Night to day ~ day to night.
Upon horizon, night to night ~
there between the then and now,
I know that winter casts its sight,
on one last leaf that will not bow ~
to frost within its golden sight,
night to night ~ night to night.
Upon horizon, night to day ~
there between the now and then,
I know my spring will fade away,
and summer's soft remember when
will echo gently autumn's way ~
day to night ~ night to day....
Winter's near ~ Winter's near......

The Caged Eagle
. . . I went the other day
To see the birds and beasts they keep enmewed
In the London Zoo. One of the first I saw —
One of the first I noticed, was an Eagle,
Ragged, befouled, within his iron bars
He sat without a movement or a sound,
And, when I stood and pitying looked at him,
I saw his great sad eyes that winkless gazed
Out to the horizon sky. I passed from there,
And walked about the gardens hither and thither,
Till all the afternoon was spent. Returning then
To seek my home, again by chance I passed
The Eagle's cage, and stood again and looked,
And saw his great sad eyes that winkless gazed
Out to the horizon sky. So I went home. . . .
The Eagle is Ireland.

Bringing My Son To The Police Station To Be Fingerprinted
My lemon-colored
whisper-weight blouse
with keyhole closure
and sweetheart neckline is tucked
into a pastel silhouette skirt
with side-slit vents
and triplicate pleats
when I realize in the sunlight
through the windshield
that the cool yellow of this blouse clashes
with the buttermilk heather in my skirt
which makes me slightly queasy
however
the periwinkle in the pattern on the sash
is sufficiently echoed by the twill uppers
of my buckle-snug sandals
while the accents on my purse
pick up the pink
in the button stitches
and then as we pass
through Weapons Check
it's reassuring to note
how the yellows momentarily mesh
and make an overall pleasing
composite
