The old mine
Some would call it almost romantic,
but to me it’s nothing more
than dilapidated
the way that the rusting
huge wheel hangs now silent
never to again turn
while the bright evening star
starts shining just above it
and a snail pecking brown ibis
flies up startled by me
screech out its dismay
and there’s no solitude, only loneliness
and a huge forgotten rusting spanner
now looking brittle where it’s stuck in a spar
and somehow the men that worked here before
are now long buried and done
and the place is empty deserted
with grass and reeds sprouting out
and some bats fly up into the sky
right out of one of the open shafts
when I throw a rock into it
and hear its sound echoing down.

Evening Star
I travelled to a distant shore
I felt I had to go
An inner voice had called me there
But why I did not know
I saw the evening star rise up
Shining out to sea
And now I understand at last what it means
What it all means
Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright
I used to tempt fate
I couldnt see straight
I faltered through my younger days
Never knowing where I was going
Then something helped me penetrate the haze
Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright
Now I am stronger
The haze no longer
Ruins my future destiny
Such inspirations and new sensations
Pull up these string ties chasing me
Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright
Im home once more, much better for
The things that I have found
Much wiser now, so simple how
Each time I turn around
I see the evening star rise up
Shining out on me
And now I understand at last what it means
What it all means
Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

Melting ice
Melting ice
Shows rusting system
And rusting system
demolishing our
Life and liberties.
We are being prey of
Exploration and exploitation
New life new territories
Sprang up and we remained
Mere silent spectators.

Vacancy, For Rent
walking the streets
of a small southern town...
empty buildings, empty houses,
'vacancy, for rent'
no one moving much,
even the church parking lots
are empty.... seems like
Jesus and His disciples
packed up, and moved on...
probably looking for work!
only a sense of quiet despair,
the sound of old cars rusting,
and the howling of a dog.
just read the news:
an elderly couple, married
67 years, murder suicide...
he'd been sick, she had
alzheimer's.... afraid there'd
be no one to take care of her...
another unmarked grave,
forgotten people, abandoned
by their own government.....
another empty house that
used to be a home...
'vacancy, for rent.'
just walking the streets
of a small southern town...
church bells are ringing...
and the smell of death
hangs in the air!

I Look Up The Sky
i look up
the sky finding you
to be a very bright star
and i ponder
if i down here
a pebble on the grass
silent and left alone
by my companion
if you still
remember me
for once i was once
a star too
shining beside you
it was love
that pulled me down
to earth
on the mud
and i pray
that it will be the same
love that died
shall pull me up
to redeem
my lost glory
but somehow
i like it here
beside a mound
where flowers grow
someone i love
is buried by
the thick grass
in silence

Have Mercy!
Have Mercy!
with final thoughts
i walk these streets,
past vacant buildings hallowed.
in silent mourning,
my heartbeat joining,
the concrete scarred by living.
passing strangers hurrying,
as if they had a life to return to.
while the shouts and cursing of working men,
rings inside the empty walls!
past tenemant buildings,
and unemployed stoops,
and eyes staring from windows.
dogs too hungry to bark,
squad cars passing slow,
tis the funeral of poverty.
while meth lab food stamp children,
sharpen knives against the curb.
and everything's grey, even the sounds,
the air is drunk with anger.
i caught a ride
with a trucker wired,
who mumbled slamming gears.
out into the country
once green and rich...
now brown and deserted.
fields not worked,
farm's foreclosed,
houses left to ghosts and memories.
tractors rusting in the sun,
the air is drunk with anger.
back into town,
past libraries closed,
and churches that ache with empty.
i can hear the sound
of the distant bells...
be it freedom or infinity.
past hospitals full,
and graveyards that move
with shadows in the night.
back to the small room
where i cant sleep...
where god weeps in the stillness.
America, America...
the air is drunk with anger!

He Wishes Upon The Evening Star
A small child sits upon a stump in the middle of the pasture
amid chirping crickets and glowing lightning bugs.
Looking up into the twilight,
a lone star twinkles, as if to say, “I am listening.”
He considers his words carefully, for such opportunities should not be wasted.
He knows he must finish this conversation before the other stars appear.
He recites a nursery rhyme.
“Star light, star bright…”
He wishes childlike: one word.
Happiness.
A young boy runs through the woods playing Hide and Seek,
laughter and voices echoing through the trees.
He steps into a clearing and looks up to the Heavens.
The first star hangs expectantly in the air.
He stands alone, outcast among the other children
as two by two, the couples dance.
He recites his mantra.
“Star light, star bright…”
He whispers two words as he is tagged “It”.
A soulmate.
A grown man walks through campus on his way home,
eerie silence blanketing him where there should be life.
Standing on the tracks, his soul heavy with loneliness,
his planet hangs steady and bright.
Doubts crawl through his mind.
He wants to share himself with somebody.
He boldly speaks his prayer.
“Star light, star bright…”
He speaks aloud three words,
Real True Love.
A broken man walks a long lonely walk.
His life is passing him by.
In an empty field, he drops to his knees and cries out
to a star that has never helped him.
A cathartic wail pierces the night.
He mumbles barely audible words.
“Star light, star bright…”
“I am still here, ” it says,
“I know what it is you would wish for -,
Peace.”
A new man breathes fresh air, seemingly for the first time.
He stands next to her and together they look
to the sky as they hold hands.
Neither can believe that this is real.
She goes inside while he tarries for a second
and begs forgiveness for falling into despair.
He whispers an apology.
“Star light, star bright…”
I’m sorry.
Please don’t let me lose her.
An old man lies dying with his family all around him.
He gazes lovingly into her bright shining eyes and
she looks as beautiful now as she did when he first saw her.
All of his wishes have been granted.
She squeezes his hand and they look out the window.
It is brighter tonight than it ever has been before.
He says with his last breath,
“Star light, star bright…”
Thank You.
For Her.

Shining Starr! !
shining star, shining star,
for how you shine so bright
your my wonderful delight.
shining star, shining star,
why is it you?
is is because i loved you to much?
too much i couldnt see.
shining star, shining star,
my heart is breaking,
i didnt have a clue what to do,
until the day come when i met you.
shining star, shining star,
i feel so used,
but why is this?
i have no clue.
shining star, shining star,
its not only you personality that shines to me,
its you insanity.
ohh shining star, shining star,
what am i going to do without you?
i need you in my life again,
to tell you its alright,
because i love you soo much,
its more than words could write,
now back to reality,
so time to go for now,
but i shall be back.. I MISS YOU! ! !

Jetsam
Foaming wave... aftershave
Plastic comb, brittle bone
Bottle top, building block
Wooden spar, plastic car
Thermos top, can of pop
Salt-stained shoe, tin of glue
Tennis racket, empty packet
Car tyre, coil of wire
Pram wheel, rubber seal
Tar-blacked stone, fir cone
Rusty lid, twisted grid
Chipboard, orange cord
Empty and faded
Bottle of bleach
Almost forgotten
On winter beach

Forgotten Ship
A wind tossed ship lost at sea
heavy tempest blowing mightily
even that harbor light
which shines so bright
never to return my love to me
The sea, that judgmental sea
claimed the one promised to me
and no one who heard it could explain
the mysterious sound the waves made
The lighthouse searches the sound
for that forgotten ship never found
I walk the shipyard late and pray
to catch a glimpse of that familiar face
When the evening settles down, I sleep
an empty place beside me
lately having the same dream
I remember only partially
I hear a sound, forgotten yet familiar
I rise from my troubled slumber
and walk out to the open shore
which meets the sea as a door
I then see a man dragged to shore
drowned, why nobody knows
someone says it was insanity
trying to swim out to sea
The dream ends, I wake again
I listen to the sound the waves send
listening closer now to the bay
I hear my name called so faint

By the Pool of the Third Rosses
I heard the sighing of the reed
In the grey pool in the green land,
The sea-wind in the long reeds sighing
Between the green hill and the sand.
I heard the sighing of the reeds
Day after day, night after night;
I heard the whirring wild ducks flying,
I saw the sea-gull's wheeling flight.
I heard the sighing of the reeds
Night after night, day after day,
And I forgot old age, and dying,
And youth that loves, and love's decay.
I heard the sighing of the reeds
At noontide and at evening,
And some old dream I had forgotten
I seemed to be remembering.
I hear the sighing of the reeds:
Is it in vain, is it in vain
That some old peace I had forgotten
Is crying to come back again?

The Nocturne: Address to the Sunset
Exquisite stillness! What serenities
Of earth and air! How bright atop the wall
The stonecrop’s fire and beyond the precipice
How huge, how hushed the primrose evenfall!
How softly, too, the white crane voyages
Yon honeyed height of warmth and silence,
whence
He can look down on islet, lake and shore
And crowding woods and voiceless promontories
Or, further gazing, view the magnificence
Of cloud- like mountains and of mountainous cloud
Or ghostly wrack below the horizon rim
Not even his eye has vantage to explore.
Now, spirit, find out wings and mount to him,
Wheel where he wheels, where he is soaring soar.
Hang where now he hangs in the planisphere -
Evening’s first star and golden as a bee
In the sun’s hair - for happiness is here!

In Silence
In silence, you can hear
the scratching of a pen across paper.
In silence, you can hear
the rhythmic sound
of your heart beating
telling you you are alive.
In silence, you can hear
the screech of a demon call.
In silence, you can hear
the murmur of a baby
just moments before
they begin to awake.
In silence, you can hear
your memories calling.
In silence, you are transported
back in your life
into days long gone by
under sun-drenched skies.
In silence, you can hear
your voice of loneliness.
In silence, you are there
within the confines
of your inner self
and forever alone in silence.

Dead Poets
dead poets; old cars
junked in heaps
in front of
abandoned houses...
empty mailboxes
rusting to the
ground...
empty swings creaking
in the late evening breeze;
a bottle of wine,
half-empty,
moans in the shadows.
the fields have been picked,
nothing left, but sweat stained dirt....
even the embers have grown cold,
and the pot is empty.
the sounds and smells of living
linger by unmarked stones...
dead poets; old cars...
running on empty!

In Spaces Limited
So many are stuck in times,
Within locked minds fearing change.
Or the process that takes them...
Away to new places.
And experiences unexplained.
In spaces limited a rotation continues.
A rotation accepted with the sameness of it!
Like a rusting with dust given permission to oxidize...
Bright eyes dull,
Minimizing active lives.
Although a freedom is there to breathe and do it deeply...
Many prefer their familiar ruts.
With others who have given up.
To share and say what they would do...
If God would bless them with a stroke of good luck.
In spaces limited a rotation continues.
A rotation accepted with the sameness of it!
So many are stuck in times,
Within locked minds fearing change.
Or the process that takes them...
Away to new places.
And experiences unexplained.
Like a rusting with dust given permission to oxidize...
Bright eyes dull,
Minimizing active lives.

This Evening The Farmer Is happy
The corellas on the tall gums are calling as darkness is cloaking the sky
The evening is calm though 'tis raining and we need rain the ground is so dry
This evening the farmer is happy his water tanks filling in the rain
Nice to hear the spluttering of rain water down the guttering to the storm water drain
Yes the farmer with the rain is happy with the warmer days of Summer ahead
The long spells of droughts and of bushfires of such things he does live in dread
In these times of climate change and global warming we do get some weather extremes
For our polluting of our natural environment our price to pay it will be huge it seems
With farm dams and smaller waterways drying out less water birds for to be seen
The countryside dry and brown looking as brown as it ever has been
The rain has never been more welcome the happy farmer has cause to smile
In the Winter and Spring little rainfall we have not seen heavy rain for some-while
The sound of the rain on the galvanize roofs is a pleasant sound for to hear
And the farmer he is looking happier at the end for him of a hard year.

Signs
All night I dreamed of my home,
of the roads that are so long
and straight they die in the middle—
among the spines of elderly weeds
on either side, among the dead cats,
the ants who are all eyes, the suitcase
thrown open, sprouting failures.
2.
And this evening in the garden
I find the winter
inside a snail shell, rigid and
cool, a little stubborn temple,
its one visitor gone.
3.
If there were messages or signs,
I might hear now a voice tell me
to walk forever, to ask
the mold for pardon, and one
by one I would hear out my sins,
hear they are not important—that I am
part of this rain
drumming its long fingers, and
of the roadside stone refusing
to blink, and of the coyote
nailed to the fence with its
long grin.
And when there are no messages
the dead lie still—
their hands crossed so strangely
like knives and forks after supper.
4.
I stay up late listening.
My feet tap the floor,
they begin a tiny dance
which will outlive me.
They turn away from this poem.
It is almost Spring.

Long Live Rock n Roll
At the end of a dream
If you know where I mean
When the mist just starts to clear
In a similar way
At the end of today
I could feel the sound of writing on the wall
It cries for you
Its the least that you can do
Like a spiral on the wind
I can hear it screamin in my mind
Long live rock and roll
Long live rock n roll
Long live rock and roll
In a different time
When the words didnt rhyme
You could never quite be sure
Then on with the change
It was simple but strange
And you knew the feeling seemed to say it all
It cries for you
Its the least that you can do
Like a spiral on the wind
I can hear it screamin in my mind
Long live rock and roll
Long live rock n roll
Long live rock and roll
If you suddenly see
What has happened to me
You should spread the word around
And tell everyone here
That its perfectly clear
They can sail above it all on what theyve found
It cries for you
Its the best that you can do
Like a sound thats everywhere
I can hear it screaming through the air
Long live rock and roll
Long live rock n roll
Long live rock and roll

Dancer In The Dark
The only hope in this endless night
Is to follow you through the shadows of the deepest blue, away from the light
I hear your voice is calling me: "Don't be afraid"
But there's something deep inside of me
Forcing me to turn away
Take my hand, don't turn away, I need you to stay
I know a place where the light and the dark can become as one
This loneliness is killing me
Is there a place we both can live?
You're the dancer in the dark
You're the child of the light
You're the sinner of all time
You're the saint with wings so white
You're the distant shape in the night
You're all the innocence left alive
You're like tainted sun
You're the star shining bright
