In The Darkness Of The Night
In the darkness of the night
you sneak over the wooden floor in the passage
while you are careful,
taking careful steps to avoid it creaking
avoiding it telling the other people in the house
about our escapades
and when the door of the room suddenly opens
I see you standing there
in a transparent night-gown
while the rays of the moon
falls silver-white over you
through the window
and to me you become a goddess
that brings unspeakable joy.

When The Late Night Burns Away
When the late night burns away with the morning sun
and darkness disappears
in the game of the blue sky
there is a kind of kindness,
suddenly some peace that falls on earth,
then all pain is missing
and you are suddenly amazed when you awake,
when the first rays of heat falls over your body;
then the sun is like a Godly flame
and on the floor
the splashing rays draw patterns,
when they peep in;
then suddenly you know that you are truly living,
when the birds stir,
you hear the first jubilant cries,
then you want to bow down before the presence of God.

A Little Ghost
The moonlight flutters from the sky
To meet her at the door,
A little ghost, whose steps have passed
Across the creaking floor.
And rustling vines that lightly tap
Against the window-pane,
Throw shadows on the white-washed walls
To blot them out again.
The moonlight leads her as she goes
Across a narrow plain,
By all the old, familiar ways
That know her steps again.
And through the scrub it leads her on
And brings her to the creek,
But by the broken dam she stops
And seems as she would speak.
She moves her lips, but not a sound
Ripples the silent air;
She wrings her little hands, ah, me!
The sadness of despair!
While overhead the black-duck's wing
Cuts like a flash upon
The startled air, that scarcely shrinks
Ere he afar is gone.
And curlews wake, and wailing cry
Cur-lew! cur-lew! cur-lew!
Till all the Bush, with nameless dread
Is pulsing through and through.
The moonlight leads her back again
And leaves her at the door,
A little ghost whose steps have passed
Across the creaking floor.

Careful What You Wish For
Just lately I've had a go
To find me a new world and candy home
All I needed was a little affection for my soul
Hey, maybe it's time to go
I should have told you a couple of years ago
And I know what's gonna play on my mind
So I'll meet you on the floor
Are you ready for some more?
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
Tell me who do you think you see?
Am I still the girl that you thought I'd be?
Do you care that I might be for real?
Hey, maybe it's time to go
I should have told you a couple of years ago
And I know what's gonna play on my mind
So I'll meet you on the floor
Are you ready for some more?
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
INSTRUMENTAL
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
Just be careful what you wish for
Just be careful what you hope for
You're wish, it may come true!
You're wish, it may come true!
You're wish, it may come true!
You're wish, it may come true!

The Room
(chris waters/tom shapiro)
When I pull in the drive where your car used to be
It doesnt hurt me like it used to
I can walk through the door, and not wonder anymore
Where you are, like I used to
I can go down the hall, see the pictures on the wall
And not miss you
But I just cant bring myself to go into..
The room
Where I spent every night with you
And the light of the moon
Came through the window
And I held you
We were so close
And its just too soon
For me to go into the room
Id remember too much if I opened that door
And Im not sure if I could face it
The beds emptiness would remind me youre with
Someone else, and I couldnt take it
So, I sleep on the couch in our living room now
Since our love died
cause Im still not ready yet to go inside...
The room
Where I spent every night with you
And the light of the moon
Came through the window
And I held you
We were so close
And its just too soon
For me to go into the room
Where the light of the moon
Came through the window
And I held you
We were so close
And its just too soon
For me to go into the room

No place for a courting-candle
A girl’s voice laughing softly
cuts through the night
and enters by the room’s window
and wide awake
I (six year old child) sneak out
to find the source of the excitement.
Gardiël studies with Martin
that boards with us
and both are matriculating
because he complains
that his eyes burn
from the old paraffin lamp
that gives light
at their farm house
where there’s no electricity.
A bright electric lamp
burns in the room
hanging ten centimetres
beneath the ceiling
and big moths
fly dark brown around it
caught in flight paths.
Another table lamp
throws a bright yellow glow
that brings heat in the chilly
highveld winter.
I see them through the window
drinking coffee and eating rusks,
before both of them
again turn pages in books
and crawl into the shelter of a bush
to stay hidden from them
and suddenly somebody moves
next to me
and I see her bend
to pickup small stones
that she throws lightly
against the room’s window.
The window opens wide
and I hear them talking softly
without hearing what they say
and the girl again laughs
before she walks to the front door
that opens noiselessly.
l’Envoi
It must have been only ten minutes
before uncle Hendrik (Gardiël’s dad)
comes running along,
open the garden gate with might
almost run the front door
out of its sockets
and with a walking stick in his hand
(that is stronger than a broom)
smashes out the light in the roof,
the table lamp
and the window
in Martin’s room
and I hear lashes
with thudding sounds
fall on both boys
and the girl
screaming hysterically
while she
also get lashed
and he shouts in anger
that this is no place
for a courting-candle.
[Reference: The word uncle used here out of respect and local custom and not to point out family relationship.]

Baby Face
White moon comes in on a baby face.
The shafts across her bed are flimmering.
Out on the land White Moon shines,
Shines and glimmers against gnarled shadows,
All silver to slow twisted shadows
Falling across the long road that runs from the house.
Keep a little of your beauty
And some of your flimmering silver
For her by the window to-night
Where you come in, White Moon.

At the bottom of the Stairs
They found her in the darkness
at the bottom of the stairs
She had, for some time, lived alone
-three days she had lain there.
Her skin was clammy to the touch,
pulse irregular and weak.
In and out of consciousness
She’d drift, but could not speak.
The nine eleven call was made
And the paramedics. arrived
Hours later we got the call:
Granny Jo had not survived.
I’m staying at her house now
As we sort things out for sale.
I’ve kept busy painting rooms.
and I’ve installed a new hand rail.
Some strange things have been happening;
my cat hissing at unseen specters.
of whom I'm unaware.
a door that opens of itself
a slowly rocking chair.
At night this old house whispers and moans,
Pipes bang and stair treads creak.
Especially on a rainy night
I find it hard to sleep.
Staying here at night alone
There’s one place I won’t go.
I avoid the basement steps.
where Dad found Granny Jo.
Sometime when I pass that door
I hear faint muttering there
Evil waits in the darkness
at the bottom of the stairs….

When The Lord Closes The Door
(kinky friedman & jeff shelby)
When i find myself alone in my house and in my head
And i blow the candles out and i take myself to bed
And i'm old enough to realize, ah, young enough to know
When the lord closes the door, he opens a little window.
When sleep closes my eyes and sends me searching for you
And i'm feelin' blue as the sky without your love to carry me through
And i'm weak enough to be afraid but strong enough to let it show.
When the lord closes the door, he opens a little window.
Baby i'm a gypsy boy, i'll ride the night until
I come to you like moonlight through your raggle-taggle window sill.
When you find yourself alone in your house and in your head
And you blow the candles out and you take yourself to bed
And you're old enough to realize, ah, young enough to know
When the lord closes the door, he opens a little window.

Unicycle
To move on with a unicycle and to reach to your destination,
But her body was very soft to touch!
However, be careful that, you do not fall into her traps;
Because, she had been sleeping around with all the men in this town.
She came to me last night almost naked!
And, i was able to overcome her tricks because,
I knew much of her stories in this town! !
So, be careful that you do not fall into her traps.
Oh yes! ! The nakedness of a teenage girl can lead a man to sleep with her;
So, be very careful on your steps along with her alone in the dark!
And, try to get back home on your unicycle without any problem.

To-Night, To-Night
to-night, to-night
we’ll storm
the house that hangs
above the narrow street
that leads to port.
Ah! that small house
How queer it is:
Its garden how deranged
How creaking
The iron stile
That opens into the garden!
And in the night
The stormy night
None go near the house
For all around
The ground’s unsanctified
By horses’ hooves
And elves and goblins green
And ghosts unseen.

The witch of Hex River
According to legend
a beautiful girl
Eliza Meiring stayed
on the farm Buffelskraal
at the foot
of the mountains
and so many suitors
were interested in her
that she would only
be the girlfriend of the man
that brought her a red disa flower.
These ground orchids
only grow on the highest peaks
and it was extremely difficult
to get the flower.
The few guys that tried
quickly got discouraged
but Frans whom she really loved
climbed up Groothoek ravine
against a wet moss covered cliff
and there fell to his death.
Eliza was deranged
when she heard the news
and was kept by her parents
in the loft of their house
where she notched Eliza Meiring 1868
onto the wooden windowsill
and one night
she got the top window open,
went down to the ground,
wearing her long white night gown
and climbed the foot hills
and sat down crying on a rock
which suddenly crumbled beneath her
and she also fell to her death.
It is said
that when the first winter snow
falls on that mountains
and the moon rises
glittering on them
her spirit dwells
on the mountain peaks
and that she still mourns
the death of her lover.

Standing In The Shadow
(coverdale)
Im running away from a feeling
Hiding my face in the sand
Im scared to love and lose again
I dont know if I can
I dont need the night to remind me
Where the lonely people go
I try running away from love
But, my heart keeps telling me no
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow
Standing in the shadow of love
Ive been living so long in the darkness
I know the cold embrace of the night,
When morning comes I close my eyes
cos Im blinded with the light
Taking a chance of a feeling
Is like waiting for a flower to grow,
So I stand at the crossroad, baby,
Wondering which way to go
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow.
Standing in the shadow of love
Im running away from a feeling,
Hiding my face in the sand
Im scared to love and lose again
I dont know if I can
I dont need the night to remind me
Where the lonely people go
I try running away from love
But, my heart keeps telling me no
Too many people
Standing in the shadow of love,
Too many people
Are standing in the shadow,
Standing in the shadow of love...

Tread Careful
Tread careful
Because youre treading on my dreams.
Tread careful
Because Ive just one heart
Tread careful
Let me down slowly
Or Ill forget how to dream.
Chorus:
I wont forget anything
(I love you)
I wont forgive anyone
(do you love me? )
Tread careful
You hear the sound of my breathing
Tread careful
Because I feel this sound
Tread careful
Im falling in a glasshouse
Im trying hard to begin
Because I want it to get harder
Tread careful
Before I change my mind
Tread careful
I could surprise you
I know something you want to do.
(repeat chorus)
Tread careful
Im sure you dont care but
Tread careful
I could change your mind
Tread careful
Ive been waiting for you
There is no comfort in here.
(repeat chorus)

Nails In My Feet
My life is a house
You crawl through the window
Skip across the floor and into the reception room
You enter the place of endless persuasion
Like a knock on the door
When there's ten or more things to do
Who is that calling?
You my companion
Run to the water on a burning beach
And it brings me relief
Pass through the walls
To find my intentions
Circle 'round in a strange, hypnotic state
I look into space
There is no connection
A million points of light
And a conversation I can't face
Cast me off one day
To lose my inhibition
Sit like a lap dog on the edge of his knee
Wear the nails on your feet
I woke up the house
Stumbled in sideways
The lights went on and everybody screamed "Surprise!"
The savage review
It left me gasping
But it warms my heart to see that you can do it too
Total surrender
Your touch is so tender
Your skin is like water on a burning beach
And it brings me relief, it brings me relief, it brings me relief
Like a night in your mind
It brings me relief
In the back door
Under the stars
And the scenery is my flaw
In the back room
Under the stars
And the scenery is my flaw

If Not Careful
No use of life
If you are not careful.
No use of mirror
If you have no eyes.
No use of knowledge
If you have no commonsense.
No use of develoement
If the benefit not reap
By common people.
Be careful be careful.

The Vagabonder
it is a long trail
it rains so hard
you are wet and you come
upon a home of an
abandoned house to shelter
you finally
amid the tall trees
and wild grass
and darkness
the house has
a door which is closed
and a window
without light
you try taking the stairs
but the snake is there first
and it has become its
territory
it is tiring
the night is deep
the rain falls so hard
you are cold
but by then you have to
move some more
to find
time
whether it holds
a place for you
whether luck
is near
whether life still
cares.

Silver Girl
Silver girl, stay until tomorrow
Take my heart away with just a single kiss,
Silver girl, the world out side our window,
Somehow fades away at moments like this,
While tonight in the city street the people rush by,
You and I are taking our time, precious time,
*wont you lay with me (stay with me) one moment more,
I couldnt bear to see you walk out that door,
Stay with me, by my one in the world,
For just one golden moment, my silver girl.*
The silver moon holds us in its power,
With a magic that Im not prepared to fight,
With all my strength Ive been holding back the hour,
Lie beside me now if just for one night,
Far below, in the city street the people rush by,
You and I are taking our time, precious time.

At The Second Floor
at the second floor of the old house
he goes up
taking the creaking stairs
as though telling him some old stories
about the falling of the
clan house to ashes for years
no one dared say
about the fall of this family
there are whispers
not louder as a thud of a cat's foot
limping on the carpet
up there is the open space overlooking the blue sea
a white sail and some foams of the sea caps
catch his attention but he can not withstand such a distant view
his eyes are hurt by too much light and tiny object
he looks at the nearby tree
old mahogany spreading its branches touching the roof
there is this single leaf that falls
a hush of the wind
twirling to the shaded space
it lands on the pebbles
nothing is heard but he has seen it all
the fall.
