I was dumbfounded
When I was a student
I bought a box of chocolates
one evening at a café
to give as a gift
to a girl
who chatted with me
in class and with whom
I had a walk
and a talk that afternoon
and she was really pretty,
far past cute
and the sky glittered
in her grey-green eyes.
The box looked inviting
beyond the glass
and I bought an apple there
later a pear
which I gobbled down
and at twenty one
I experienced how astounding
new love could be
and was more dumbfounded
that she really liked me.

Gods Gift To Man
Well I met him in the navy
He was the head of the class
She was a cute little thing
He liked the way she shook her glass
And they went off to texas
And they bought some land yeah
And they settled in a hobo
Home by a taco stand
He was doin things he didnt understand
There was no way to exlain it
She was gods gift to man
Well he got a promotion
And he bought himself a color tv
Had the cable put in
And they watched a round of jeopardy
And they sat out in the evening
And they watched the sun go down
And everything they did
They were livin on the outside of town
Well the time went by
That he didnt understand
She was gods gift to man
Yeah baby tell me, tell me real good
Dont you know that were livin just like a young boy should?
Well she went off to houston
Where she was livin in sin
Well he built an office building
But nobody moved in
She wound up in el paso
On the streets again
It was hard to take it
But sometimes you just cant win
It was after a little way
That he didnt understand
And couldnt understand that
She was gods gift to man
Well I seen her on tv just a couple of nights ago
She was a doin a commercial
Smilin with some ivory soap
Well I knew inside her heart was black as coal
There aint no way to replace the amount of lovin that little girl stole
Yeah one day she got it comin
And she wont understand her niche
Shes gods gift to man
Yeah Ive been doin things that I dont understand
Yeah shes gods gift to man
Yeah, yeah ,yeah
Alright, alright, alright

You're Pretty Good Lookin' (For A Girl)
Oh yeah you're pretty good lookin...for a girl,
But your back is so broken.
And this feeling's still gonna linger on,
Until the year twenty-five twenty-five now.
Yeah you're pretty good looking for a girl,
Your eyes are wide open.
And your thoughts have been stolen by the boys.
Who took you out and bought you everything you own now.
Yeah you're pretty good looking oh yeah...
You're pretty good lookin.
Yes you're pretty good looking..oh yeah, for a girl.
Lots of people in this world,
But I wanna be your boy.
To me that thought it sounds so absurd,
And I don't wanna be your toy.
Cuz you're pretty good looking for a girl,
My future's wide open.
But this feeling's still gonna linger on,
Until I know everything I need to know now.
Yeah you're pretty good looking oh yeah...
You're pretty good lookin.
Yes you're pretty good looking..oh yeah, for a girl.

Afternoon Tea
Tea time wont be the same without my donna
At night I lie awake and dream of donna
I think about that small cafe
Thats where we used to meet each day
And then we used to sit a while
And drink our afternoon tea
Ill take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
If you take it with me (afternoon tea)
You take as long as you like
cause I like you, girl
I take sugar with tea (afternoon tea)
You take milk if you please (afternoon tea)
Like you talking to me
Because you ease my mind
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Tea time still aint the same without my donna
At night I lie awake and dream of donna
I went to our cafe one day
They said that donna walked away
Youd think at least she might have stayed
To drink her afternoon tea
Ill take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
If you take it with me (afternoon tea)
You take as long as you like
cause I like you, girl
I take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
Every day of the week (afternoon tea)
Please come along if you like
Because I like you, girl

Wings Of Love
I was living in a daydream
Letting time a days my mind
I didnt know what I was missing
Till you came into my life
When I saw you pretty girl
Felt as going inside
When I kissed you pretty girl
Felt you lighted up my mind
Boy Im crying
Im on the wings of love
And I know that
It comes from junior love
All in hands we walk together
Nothings gonna make us fast
But our love wil lives forever
If the sun thats in our heart
Making love is also sweet
Were lost in each others eyes
And I bought infinity
That the one turnes to life
Boy Im flying
Im on the wings of love
And I know that
It comes from junior love
Now Im living in a lovedream
Time and days are passing by
Now I realy know what love is
I cant help smiling all the time
When youre with me pretty girl
I feel your warmth by my side
When you touch me pretty girl
Brings that joy often high
Boy Im flying
Im on the wings of love
And I know that
It comes from junior love
(and I know that
It comes from junior love)

A Country For Old Men
A Country for old Men
I have been into town bought a paper and drank a beer,
in the café where the old men sit in the afternoon shade.
I feel more at ease here amongst other wrinklies.
On the other side of the road, near the pharmacy,
the big clock on the wall tells us it’s five and the temp is
41 Celsius, but in the shade and with a breeze blowing
it feels fine. In a few years the big clock will tell us that
time is up, but others will come and take our place.
There is a vast pool of us in deaths ante room; we are
but tiny ants on a window pane so easily squashed by
a child’s thumb. I sit in the shed, see how cigarette smoke
spirals up and out before dissipating in still hot air, and
thought of the silent sighs I heard when a beautiful girl
walked past our café. We shall never possess anything
as lovely again.

Girl
(coverdale/marsden/murray)
I have never known a woman
Who loves me like you do,
You treat me like a dog
An make me shake my tail for you
I know the game youre playing
When youre turning all your tricks
Its written on your face
You just want your business fixed
No, I dont need a crystal ball
To see whats in your mind
If I dont give you what you want
You treat me so unkind,
But if Im good and give you love
You throw me down a bone,
But if Im bad you make me sad
An leave my love alone
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Just a pretty little crazy white girl,
Pretty little crazy white girl
Girl, girl
Pretty little crazy white girl
I know, baby, you aint fooling
With all your high class schooling,
You want everything your own way
If I could, I would
Do every little thing a good man should,
Baby, Id really give it to you
Every day
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Just a pretty little crazy white girl,
Pretty little crazy white girl
Girl...
Mean mistreater,
There aint no one to beat you,
But you treat me so bad
Ive never known a woman
Who loves me like you do,
You treat me like a dog
An still I shake my tail for you
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Just a pretty little crazy white girl,
Pretty little crazy white girl
Girl, girl...
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Girl, she treat me so bad
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Girl, come on baby
Pretty little crazy white girl,
I love the way you make me
Girl...
Pretty little crazy white girl,
Girl...
Pretty little crazy white girl

The Last Time I Saw Richard
The last time I saw richard was detroit in 68,
And he told me all romantics meet the same fate someday
Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark cafe
You laugh, he said you think youre immune, go look at your eyes
Theyre full of moon
You like roses and kisses and pretty men to tell you
All those pretty lies, pretty lies
When you gonna realise theyre only pretty lies
Only pretty lies, just pretty lies
He put a quarter in the wurlitzer, and he pushed
Three buttons and the thing began to whirr
And a bar maid came by in fishnet stockings and a bow tie
And she said drink up now its gettin on time to close.
Richard, you havent really changed, I said
Its just that now youre romanticizing some pain thats in your head
You got tombs in your eyes, but the songs
You punched are dreaming
Listen, they sing of love so sweet, love so sweet
When you gonna get yourself back on your feet?
Oh and love can be so sweet, love so sweet
Richard got married to a figure skater
And he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator
And he drinks at home now most nights with the tv on
And all the house lights left up bright
Im gonna blow this damn candle out
I dont want nobody comin over to my table
I got nothing to talk to anybody about
All good dreamers pass this way some day
Hidin behind bottles in dark cafes
Dark cafes
Only a dark cocoon before I get my gorgeous wings
And fly away
Only a phase, these dark cafe days

My Nordic Christmas Story
I bought boots for Christmas to tread the icy plains.
I bought toys for Christmas with Santas in my trains.
I lit my home for Christmas with a Cedar bright.
I made cup cakes for Christmas for my love's delight.
I bought Jane a dress for Christmas with ribbons pink.
I bought for my grandma a cozy Christmas mink.
I bought for Jill two amazing Christmas Sparrows.
I bought for Jack a toy quiver full of arrows.
I bought an Elk for Christmas with nose giving light.
I bought for Christmas, candles for a solemn night.
I made for Christmas a warm and sweet lemonade,
and I sang on Christmas morn, a sweet Serenade.

Love At First Sight
Love at first sight
I joined the merchant navy at fifteen and women I met in faraway ports
lived in shady bars and pink bedrooms, had raspy voices eyes as cold
diamonds and laughter that sounded like broken glass; they only had
time for crude words. By the docks in Livorno, Italy, a girl in a cake shop
smiled to me, said I was a pretty boy. Pink I bought more cakes than
I could eat. I had met a girl who liked to hold my hand, laugh and talk.
We went to the movie, saw “La Strada” but the nearness of this girl was
so overwhelming I could not focus on the movie. Happy day, yes I ate
a lot of cakes. My ship had to sail for other ports, I was in love promised
to come back soon. Sadly my ship never returned. My boyish love
affair was forgotten in the carrousel of ventures and bitter love affairs.
I don’t know why I remember her, guess she’s grandmother now.

The meeting
I caught your eye
in the Afrikaans literature class
while studying business
at the private university
and you watched me
but the day your car cooked
on the soccer field,
we really met.
I saw your car parked
on the soccer field
and asked Marthinus
my roommate and friend
why it’s parked there?
He said that it belonged
to a really beautiful girl
who probably has trouble with it,
but that people like him and me
didn’t have a chance
with a girl like you.
So I asked him to introduced us
and your eyes were like the sky,
but not blue,
ever changing
sometimes green and brown
and your auburn hair
glittered in the sun.
I fiddled with a connector on the fan
and suddenly it came on
and when I looked
into your eyes
it was into your soul.
You smiled like an angel
and like magic
we were as if alone
and I was under your spell
and when I smiled back
it did something to you
and I knew
that you were the girl for me.

Recuerdo
We were very tired, we were very merry --
We had gone back and forth all night upon the ferry.
It was bare and bright, and smelled like a stable --
But we looked into a fire, we leaned across a table,
We lay on the hill-top underneath the moon;
And the whistles kept blowing, and the dawn came soon.
We were very tired, we were very merry --
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry;
And you ate an apple, and I ate a pear,
From a dozen of each we had bought somewhere;
And the sky went wan, and the wind came cold,
And the sun rose dripping, a bucketful of gold.
We were very tired, we were very merry,
We had gone back and forth all night on the ferry.
We hailed, "Good morrow, mother!" to a shawl-covered head,
And bought a morning paper, which neither of us read;
And she wept, "God bless you!" for the apples and the pears,
And we gave her all our money but our subway fares.

``MonoMania`` {it's valentine! ! }
So funny, how so fast I've reached this familiar time..
Looked up at calendar today, and found tomorrow's valentine.
Lips holding back a smile there, and in my mind memories of yesterday shine,
Hands not sure if to play that love song again,
As tomorrow you'll be the valentine of him,
and not mine.
Took out your picture off my closet, wiped away a little dust on there,
Like I do every year, I kept your picture on my table,
To make you see my dear, that again the love is in the air.
And as I would go for a walk, I'll carry you along in my pocket,
The view of couples buying gifts and Archie's gallery playing love songs,
I know that you will mind, now if I don't buy you some chocolates.
So I bought some of the best in town,
Bought a card from the Archie's, written 'You're my Dawn'.
And when I bought a cake & two candles, I can see a smile in your lips,
As you know I'll never miss this, even though I'm alone.
And as the night will begin to fade, and in the clock will be 11 past 58.
I'll lit the candles on the cake, and make sure that your picture be straight,
When it'll be 12, I'll let the knife go down,
First a piece of cake, then I'll kiss your lips with a low sound.
And everything will be carried out, as if all is fine,
With you picture next to me tonight I'll dine,
But still hands not sure, if to play that love song again,
As tomorrow you'll be the valentine of him,
and not mine.
And ain't it funny, how so fast I've reached this familiar time..
Looked up at calendar today, and found today's valentine.
Lips holding back a smile there, and in my mind memories of yesterday shine.
Bright old yesterday,
When you used to be this monomaniac's valentine.

Frog Sees Tara
A small and green but drunken frog
sat in the evening on his log.
He contemplated there on life
and wished he had a green frog wife.
He'd interviewd a thousand frogs,
kept diaries and detailed logs.
But never did he find the one
who'd rest all day out in the sun
and dream with him at night in bed
so this green frog was never wed.
One day he saw, down near the trees
a British subject. What a tease!
She was a trifle big but, well,
we cannot all live in a shell.
She chatted with the folks and then
there was a silence among men.
They looked at her, so did the frog
he sat, quite drunken, on his log.
He dreamed that if he ever were...
this was the girl. If frogs could purr! ! !

I Bought You A Rose
the problem is
the grandfather clock
in the adjacent room
it chimes
on the hour
every hour
through the night
it keeps me awake
through the night
the night in which
i think of you
because
i hold the rose
in my hand
through the night
the rose that i bought you
in the afternoon
the rose that you did not want
in the evening
the evening when i took you out
and you said
you did not want the rose
you wanted it to be over between us
you said it was no use
a rose was no use
a rose could not
bring us together
a rose could not
keep us together
a rose by any other name
is still just a rose
you said
i should keep my rose
you said
you said it when i offered you the rose
you said it again
when the evening was over
when we left each other
and so i took it home
the rose that i bought you
i thought of you
on my way home
with the rose
i thought of how it had been
between us
i thought of how it might have been
between us
i tried to forget
how it had been
between us
i tried to forget
how it might have been
between us
but the rose reminded me
how it was
between us
i took the rose with me
when i got into bed
when i tried to sleep
it had been deep red
but it seemed to me
now it was not so deep red
as it had been before
each time i woke
i looked at the rose
each time it seemed
not so deep red
as it had been before
each time it seemed
a little more faded
a little more dry
a little less red
a little less fresh
each time
its scent also
had been beautiful
like you were beautiful
its scent also seemed to me
a little more faded
a little less fresh
a little less beautiful
a little less able
to evoke you
a little less able
to keep you
to keep your memory
alive
alive in the night
even when i turned on the light
to look again
at the rose
to inhale again
the perfume of the rose
i saw it fading
i saw you fading
i saw your beauty fading
through the night
and i saw that you were right
about the rose
that a rose is just a rose
that a rose could not
bring us together
that a rose could not
keep us together
that a rose by any other name
is still just a rose
that you by any other name
are still just a rose
fading through the night
i cannot keep you
for i cannot keep you
from fading through the night
like this rose i bought you
like any rose
like anything i ever bought you
the problem is
the grandfather clock
in the adjacent room
it chimes
on the hour
every hour
through the night

We Are Glass
We are young we can break
Watch us fall
We can take some train
Down to the sea
We are glass, we are glass
We are real you can touch
Just for now
And then say
hey you, which way is down
We are glass, we are glass
We are strong we run though
We have time
And to you Im just
One of those boys
We are glass, we are glass
We are cold
Were not supposed to cry
But its all just a thought
So here am i
We are glass, we are glass
They run fast
Impressions of the floors inviting
Stay with me, stay with me
They run past
With telephones they scream
Well would you turn all this down
Turn all this down
You are replaced you are you
And our dreams are real
And dreams are all we need
We are glass, we are glass
We slip down
And old eyes dont cry for me
Cause I doubt Im and I doubt you
And never never going to doubt
We are glass, we are glass
They run fast
Impressions of the floors inviting
Stay with me, stay with me
They run past
With telephones they scream
Well would you turn all this down
Turn all this down

I Dig Love
I dig love
I dig love
I dig love
Hm, I dig love in the morning
I dig love in the evening
I dig love and I want you to know I dig love
I love dig
I love dig
I love dig
Hm, I love dig in the morning
I love dig every evening
I dig love and I want you to know I dig love
Small love, big love, I dont care
Loves all good love to me
Left love, right love, anywhere love
Theres a rare love, come on and get it, its free
I dig love
I dig love
I dig love
Hm, I dig love in the morning
I dig love in the evening
I dig love and I want you to know I dig love
Bought love, short love, in any port
Loves always there to see
Make love, take love, but you should give love
And try to live love, come on thats where you should be
I dig love
I dig love
I dig love
Hm, I dig love in the morning
I dig love in the evening
I dig love and I want you to know I dig love
Yes, I want you to know I dig love
Yes, I want you to know I dig love
To know I dig love
Yes, I do
I dig love (repeat and fade)

Forever In Love
Lately my head has been spinning girl
Cant bear the thought of you not in my world
I may have had my problems in the past
But this time I swear that well make it last
Cause girl I know what you want, I know what you need
And I swear with my hand on my heart
Baby just look in my eyes and there you will see
How much I want to make it right
Can we give it one more try before we walk away?
You and me one on one, together for love
Can we give it one more try before we walk away?
Girl, to me we should forever be in love
Baby come with me and take my hand
Lets take an hour to reminisce and plan our future by the stars above
Therell be plenty of affection and a whole lot of love
Cause girl you are my queen youre my everything
And I swear youre the air that I breathe
Baby, how could I go on?
No doubt youre the reason my love is so strong
Can we give it one more try before we walk away?
You and me one on one, together for love
Can we give it one more try before we walk away?
Girl, to me we should forever be in love
Girl, when I look in your smile it touches
So deep in my heart what a joy Ive found
Please dont walk away, baby just stay right here with me

Lovely White Flowers
He went inside the cafe where they used to sit together.
It was here, three months ago, that his friend told him:
'We're completely broke -so hard up, the two of us,
that we're stuck with the cheapest places.
I can't go around with you any more -it's no use hiding the fact.
I've got to tell you, somebody else is after me.'
The 'somebody else' had promised him two suits, some silk handkerchiefs.
He himself, to get his friend back,
went through hell rounding up twenty pounds.
His friend came back to him for the twenty pounds-
but along with that, for their old intimacy,
their old love, for the deep feeling between them.
The 'somebody else' was a liar, a real bum:
he'd ordered only one suit for his friend,
and that under pressure, after much begging.
But now he doesn't want the suits any longer,
he doesn't want the silk handkerchiefs at all,
or twenty pounds, or twenty piastres even.
Sunday they buried him, at ten in the morning.
Sunday they buried him, almost a week ago.
He laid flowers on his cheap coffin,
lovely white flowers, very much in keeping
with his beauty, his twenty-two years.
When he went to the cafe that evening
he happened to have some vital business there
to that same cafe where they used to go together,
it was a knife in his heart,
that dead cafe where they used to go together.
