Ezra Pound

Ballad for Gloom

For God, our God is a gallant foe
That playeth behind the veil.

I have loved my God as a child at heart
That seeketh deep bosoms for rest,
I have loved my God as a maid to man—
But lo, this thing is best:

To love your God as a gallant foe that plays behind the veil;
To meet your God as the night winds meet beyond Arcturus' pale.

I have played with God for a woman,
I have staked with my God for truth,
I have lost to my God as a man, clear-eyed—
His dice be not of ruth.

For I am made as a naked blade,
But hear ye this thing in sooth:

Who loseth to God as man to man
Shall win at the turn of the game.
I have drawn my blade where the lightnings meet
But the ending is the same:
Who loseth to God as the sword blades lose
Shall win at the end of the game.

For God, our God is a gallant foe that playeth behind the veil.
Whom God deigns not to overthrow hath need of triple mail.

You Know What Theyre Writing About

You know what theyre writing about
Baby you know what theyre writing about
Its a thing called love down through the ages
Makes you wanna cry sometimes
Makes you feel like you wanna lay down and die sometimes
Makes you high sometimes
But when you really get in it lifts you right up
Aint it a wonderful game
Aint it a marvellous game
And when theres no more words to say about love I go
Meet me down, meet me down,
Meet me down by the river
Meet me down by the water
Meet me down by the water
Meet me down by the pylons
Meet me down by the pylons
Meet me down by the pylons
Meet me down by the pylons
Meet me, meet me, I want you to meet me - are you there
And know, know, know, know
I want you to meet me - are you there
I want you to meet me - are you there
And know, know, know, know, know
I want you to meet me

A Holy Week Song, 1918

Now when Christ died for man his sake
A myriad men must die;
His Via Crucis they must take
And share His Calvary.
God keep ye, gallant gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
Who share Lord Jesus Christ His pain
Upon this Good Friday!

Now some shall turn and meet His gaze
And say, 'Remember me
When Thou art come to Thine own place
Where ransomed sinners be!'
God rest ye, gallant gentlemen,
For ye are bought with price,
This day there wends a shining train
The way to Paradise.

The day our Lord Christ lay in grave
The dead are piled so high
The field slow-moving like a wave
Sends up a mortal cry.
God love ye, gallant gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
For life is born and Death is slain
Upon the Easter Day.

Weary not of us, for we are very beautiful

Weary not of us, for we are very beautiful; it is out of very jealousy and proper pride that we entered the veil.
On the day when we cast of the body’s veil from the soul, you will see that we are the envy of despair of man and the Polestars.
Wash your face and become clean for beholding us, else remain afar, for we are beloveds of ourselves.
We are not that beauty who tomorrow will become a crone; till eternity we are young and heart-comforting and fair of stature.
If that veil become worn out, the beauty has not grown old; the life of the Veil is transient, and we are boundless life.
When Eblis saw the veil of Adam, he refused; Adam called to him, “You are the rejected one, not I.”
The rest of the angels fell down prostrate, saying as they bowed themselves, “We have encountered a beauty:
“Beneath the veil is an idol who by his qualities robbed us of reason, and we, prostrate, fell.”
If our reason does not know the forms of the foul old men from those of the beauties, we are apostates from love.
What place is there for a beauty? For he is the Lion of God. Like a child we prattled, for we are children of the alphabet.
Children are beguiled with nuts and raisins, else, how are we meet for nuts and sesame-grains?
When an old woman is hidden in helmet and chainmail, she says, “I am the illustrious Rostam of the battle ranks.”
By her boast all know that she is a woman; how should we make a mistake, seeing that we are in the light of Ahmad?
“The believer is discriminating” - so said the Prophet; now close your mouth, for we are guided rightly without speech.
Hear the rest of from Shams the Pride of Tabiz for we did not take the end of the story from that king.

Victory but a veil of lies, treachery and deceit.

Victory but a veil,
of lies, treachery and deceit.
The web spun around your heart,
that makes it believe it's complete.

Victory but a veil
that hides you from the truth,
The fallacy that makes you believe
the impossible, even with no proof.

Victory but a veil
of scorn, lust and despair.
The thing that makes you believe
in the things that were never really there.

Do You Feel Feelings Too

I meet you... I met you
Then suddenly, erratically, irrationally, I have feelings for you
Sadly I'm not even sure the person who
You are, and you don['t know me.. so then how could you possibly have feelings for me
I'm tying to understand if just maybe there's a chance
If we have a chance
Although I'm enamored with you, how could you be interested in me?
I no longer hate myself, but in our only time together
I found myself expressing myself, expressing the darkness which lies deep within
I spout this depression, pessimism, and cynicism often, but it's truthful
That is how I felt, that is how I feel, I do not want to hide from you
But I also think what you do see of me is that part
I'd like to think I am more
I am sure I am more
I wish I could show you that
Is it too late?
Is the first impression enough to turn this love into a crush
Just another crushing crush
Is it too late, because it was never too early, because you never had feelings for me
How is it getting to know me and my darkness will 'woo' you, it is something
I think you would find intensely disturbing, but it is me
I've given up hiding nowhere
But surely I cannot be here with you
Not if I'm not wanted
Not now
Not sooner
Not later
I have to ask and wonder
ponder and think, do you feel feelings too?
Is it possible you do, are others comparably irrational in this instant love
Or has my disillusion grown to veil all reason and logic
I do believe the veil is strong
I do believe this veil is self-imposed
I do believe I am alone behind this veil
And so I believe all my thoughts, strivings, and wistful thinkings will fail
I shall stay nowhere, behind my curtain
With my heart stain
I will not forget you, but you will forget me. Maybe that's best
Maybe that's what's next
Maybe that's what we both need... or maybe just you
Here let me help you it's even harder to see when you can't hear

Lay His Sword By His Side

Lay his sword by his side -- it hath served him too well
Not to rest near his pillow below;
To the last moment true, from his hand ere it fell,
Its point was still turn'd to a flying foe.
Fellow-labourers in life, let them slumber in death,
Side by side, as becomes the reposing brave --
That sword which he loved still unbroke in its sheath,
And himself unsubdued in his grave.

Yet pause -- for, in fancy, a still voice I hear,
As if breathed from his brave heart's remains; --
Faint echo of that which, in Slavery's ear,
Once sounded the war-word, "Burst your chains."
And it cries, from the grave where the hero lies deep,
"Though the day of your Chieftain for ever hath set,
Oh leave not his sword thus inglorious to sleep --
It hath victory's life in it yet!

"Should some alien, unworthy such weapon to wield,
Dare to touch thee, my own gallant sword,
Then rest in thy sheath, like a talisman seal'd,
Or return to the grave of thy chainless lord.
But, if grasp'd by a hand that hath learn'd the proud use
Of a falchion, like thee, on the battle-plain,
Then, at Liberty's summons, like lightning let loose,
Leap forth from thy dark sheath again!"

The Christmas Homes of England

The Christmas homes of England!
How far-famed and how dear;
In bright array they ever stand,
That glad day of the year;
When gathered round the hearth-stone,
The loved ones joyful meet,
With one accord from far and near,
The circle glad to greet.
The Christmas homes of England!
O, many a joyous brow,
Which ever yet hath hailed that day,
Will sorrowfully bow,
When this one now returneth;
For they look, but look in vain,
The pride and joy of that glad home,
They ne'er shall see again!

The Christmas homes of England!
In manhood's noblest bloom,
On Alma's bloody fields thy lords
Have found their lowly tomb;
The warrior grey, whose stalwart arm
Had prostrate laid the foe;
And gallant sons of noble sires,
By them in death lie low!

The Christmas homes of England!
Alike in peasant's cot,
Where hath the death-wail not been heard,
Where hath it entered not?
And the widowed mother silent weeps,
And sheds the bitter tear,
As fancy sees her gallant boy,
The cold ground for his bier!

The Christmas homes of England!
In that far-off Eastern land,
What thoughts will be awakened
Among that gallant band?
How from scenes so dark and fearful,
Their spirit will take flight
To the bright home of their childhood,
And the happy Christmas night!

The Christmas homes of England!
The love of many years
Is turned into a ceaseless fount
Of bitterness and tears;
The mother and the widow,
The maiden and the child,
They call; but none shall answer,
Those loving accents mild!

O, Christmas homes of England!
There's One, the widow's God!
Who, while He chastens, pitieth
The sad ones 'neath His rod;
His arm beneath supported
Thy loved ones in the field,
And whispered, "Leave thy little ones
To me, their God, their shield!

O, Christmas homes of England!
Let all unite in prayer,
That He, the widow's God, may take
Such to His special care;
And we to whom he spareth
Our hearts best treasure yet;
The widow and the orphan,
O let us not forget!

A Love Story

once I loved you
it may yesterday or today
never write

we never go to meet
but still we loved
again we need to meet
how many times we need to meet
how many times you meet me
how many times we loved
how many times we walked together
you loved me or my songs
those days are never again
a love song never to again
never to return this love
never to walk to this......
this song I write from my heart
home is where my heart to pain
this ink it is my pains
and still this heart never to beat for you
and they make a miss of words
and still you love to sit here alone
and still you know
this rose not for you

Kemp Owyne

As a small child her mother died
that sorrowed her in her heart,
when her father married again
a wicked cruel lady

and almost like a slave
she beckoned to the woman’s call
and did every task
big or small, she did them all

until one moonless night
the women send her father to bed,
and in darkness without any light
said strange things casting a spell

and carried little Isabel
to a cliff above the sea
and in glee cursed her sorrowfully
until Kemp Owyne
who lived in a far of city
come to the rescue
and with three kisses set her free
and into the waters she threw the child
laughing wickedly

and covered Isabel was
in scales from tail to fin
and tales of a hideous beast
with long hair, breathing strong
was told by the people that came across her,
even to those across the sea
and to her it was a great calamity

and immediately Kemp Owyne
sailed with his great boat,
from the far off city
to see for himself
and she begged him for a kiss
and still hideous was she
and a magic belt fit for a king
would be his
that would protect against any enemy
but warned him to only kiss
and not to touch,
the rest of her body
or the belt would bring him death
would cause his last breath

and gallant Kemp Owyne
gave her a kiss
and the belt was his

and she begged him for a kiss
and still hideous was she
and a ring fit for king
she offered him
that would protect against any enemy
but warned him to only kiss
and not to touch,
the rest of her body
or the ring would become a deadly thing

and gallant Kemp Owyne
gave her a kiss
and the ring was his

and she begged him for a kiss
and still hideous was she
and a mighty sword fit for king
she offered him
that would protect against any enemy
but warned him to only kiss
and not to touch,
the rest of her body
or an enemy sword would pierce him

and gallant Kemp Owyne
gave her a kiss
and it was sweet bliss,
full of passion was he
and the sword was his

and transformed was she
with hair short,
more beautiful than any queen
and she was free,
walked on to the beach
right out of the sea
and gallant Kemp Owyne
begged her to accompany him.

Behind The Veil

She always stands alone and nobody wants her,
He always stands alone and nobody wants him,
Behind the veil with the truth;
Open the waters to expose matters,
Like when success fails to come in.
Cheerful and childish,
Lonely and hopeless,
Better as expected from the traditions of the people;
A Philosophy,
A Notebook,
Like guns without a veil when being exposed;
Here are the experimental overviews.
Individualism,
Promoted on ignorance;
Always alone without a friend,
Like when the rains fail to come.
Behind the veil,
But if you think, do reason;
Behind the veil,
But if you learn, do know;
In this life,
Every once a while there is the truth.

The Unforgiving Blade

When the sky is turning black, you fear the dawn
Your inner voice compels you, but youre all alone
Thy secret sense lies still obscure within your shattered dreams,
and all you can do is scream
Long ago you spoke the words of heresy
Twenty years of running brings back memories
All your wisdom made me seek the truth that lied beyond
my inner dreams
Follow the one that fell from the crimson skies
I remember the words, I can never forget your demise
And now your worlds falling down
For all the games that you played
And as your souls falling down
Youll meet The Unforgiving Blade
Should have seen it coming
when you rolled the dice
Deeper and deeper, falling,
away from your paradise
Solo: Stefan
Innocent eyes observing the Crimson Skies,
awaiting for someone to heal the burning lies
And now your worlds falling down
For all the games that you played

Affairs Of The Heart

Written by stevie nicks.
One set of doors was the color of honey
One set of doors was pink and grey
Well I wonder which set is mine, said she
As she walked down the long hallway
Well I wonder which set of rooms are mine
For in these rooms she would live and die
Well its better to have loved and lost
(ah but its better not to lose)
Then to never have loved at all
(never have loved, never have loved at all)
Well its better to have loved and lost
(ah but its better not to lose)
Then to always be alone
(always be alone)
In your heart
I thought that there was more involved
Through all that time and all these months
I stopped many times to question you
Well I told you that it was the right thing to do
Well its better to have loved and lost
(ah but its better not to lose)
Then to never have loved at all
(never have loved, never have loved at all)
Well its better to have loved and lost
(ah but its better not to lose)
Then to always be alone
(always be alone)
In your heart
But I knew that this was just for now
And the time would take its toll upon us all
Well it would break our hearts
Tear it apart
But no one understood
The affairs of the heart
Well its better to have loved and lost
Then to never have loved at all
(never have loved, never have loved at all)
Well itll break your heart
Tear it apart
But no one understands
(no one understands)
The affairs of the heart

Long Black Veil

Ten years ago on a cold dark night
Someone was killed beneath the townhall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me
The judge said son, what is your aliby?
If you were somewhere else, then you wont have to die.
I said not a word, though it meant my life,
For Id been in the arms of my best friends wife.
Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil.
She visits my grave when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Oh, now the scaffold is high, eternity is near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
And sometimes at night when the cold winds blow
In a long black veil she cries over my bones.
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Oh, she walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me.
Nobody knows. nobody knows, but me.
Nobody knows but me.

Lost Dog

Oh why am i lost to this,
over and over this pondered, take back
impossible, postpone to another day...hide me...

ignore the dog, ignore its signs and one will surely be seduced,
hear her calling.......and forever so, begin to go blind;

' just reach for my hand, I will free you child'

and free I will be, be it but a pause, an intoxicating journey
free of this world, this! the non essentials of life;
when the veil parts: - what then? Done?

'just let yourself go child for i will guide thee'

through the pain coloured veil of it all: I see you! ! !

You hath guided me before! ! and I say, No!

no more, who ever you pretend to be

Deep in the night
I can hear you calling my name
How can I try to help you woman
If you go on hiding your pain
Baby, baby, the tears on your pillow are real
You cant go on pretending to me
When I see the pain that you feel
A code of silence, is a dreadful thing
It can make you feel harder
It can keep you hanging on a string
Here in the darkness
When I hear you calling my name
A code of silence is a deadly game
Its a deadly game (whats that you say)
Its a deadly game (speak to me now)
Its a deadly game (deadly game)
Lost in your dreams
Trouble on your face in the pale moonlight
Nowhere to run youve got to let me know
Where you are standing tonight
Baby baby baby
I know that youre hurting inside
Open your heart
I know that we can make it
If you talk to me now

We Will Meet Again

Was it the words she said or was it all in the way in which the lady said them?
Her eyes that spoke to me were sending my heart a thought so deep I cant forget them
I guess it wasnt the right time or the place
For love right then
But we met destiny, and it sealed our fate
Chorus:
Well me again (we will meet again)
I know we will (we will meet again)
On my heart its written (we will meet again)
Somewhere, someplace, somehow Ill find her then as I did now... just for a moment
And I will hear the wind that told me
I will return again my love have patience
Lifes a circle, it all comes back around, so until then...
Ill be waiting for you knowing somehow?
Repeat chorus
And if she were standing in a crowd
Shed be the one that I would find among the faces
And if the music was too loud
Itd be her voice that I would hear
Above it all (we will meet again)
I know we will (we will meet again)
I know we will (we will meet again)
And if she were standing in a crowd
Shed be the one that I would find among the faces
And if the music was too loud
Itd be her voice that I would hear
Above it all (we will meet again)
I know we will (we will meet again)

Ezra Pound

For E. McC

Gone while your tastes were keen to you,
Gone where the grey winds call to you,
By that high fencer, even Death,
Struck of the blade that no man parrieth;
Such is your fence, one saith,
One that hath known you.
Drew you your sword most gallantly
Made you your pass most valiantly
'Gainst that grey fencer, even Death.

Gone as a gust of breath
Faith! no man tarrieth,
‘Se il cor ti manca,’ but it failed thee not!
'Non ti fidar,’ it is the sword that speaks
‘In me.’

Thou trusted'st in thyself and met the blade
'Thout mask or gauntlet, and art laid
As memorable broken blades that be
Kept as bold trophies of old pageantry.
As old Toledos past their days of war
Are kept mnemonic of the strokes they bore,
So art thou with us, being good to keep
In our heart's sword-rack, though thy sword-arm sleep.

ENVOI
Struck of the blade that no man parrieth
Pierced of the point that toucheth lastly all,
'Gainst that grey fencer, even Death,
Behold the shield! He shall not take thee all.
