The Inky Night

How really eerie becomes the inky night,
Which street lights illuminate with pitiful glow,
Revealing alien shadows in swift flight,
And ghostly noises that echo 'in vacuo'.

Night gradually darkens all this world of ours,
Silence reigns, except for nature's cries,
The elements engage us, with their salient power,
And far flung stars sit quietly in the skies.

Whistling winds, down alleys, wing their way,
Hats fly off, and umbrellas invert with ease,
On pavements, the homeless, with nowhere to stay,
Curl up in cardboard boxes, and slowly freeze.

Between those hours of sunset and the dawn,
A fox sneaks out in search of needed fare,
To hunt until the awakening of the morn,
Returning thence, to cubs within her lair.

Whilst we sleep, nocturnal creatures stir,
The bat, the owl, the cat, all stalk abroad,
They have no fear of darkness, they prefer
This sunless land, which, they have long explored.

How really eerie becomes the inky night,
When street lights illuminate with pitiful glow,
We awake to sunshine and the gentle light,
But all was darkness and existed 'an initio'.

Their Day's Begun

Footsteps echo down a narrow alley,
black cat on watch, stretches, expanding his claws.
Far away an owl hoots out a warning,
then silence returns, no banging of doors.

An eerie time reigns when darkness descends,
each noise seems louder, shattering the night.
And one’s hearing’s sharper, alert to sounds,
for anything strange can give way to fright.

Everywhere are shadows, lights are dim,
who would be brave, to venture out late.
Behind every bush is a spooky ghoul,
ready to scare you, and their niche vacate.

Footsteps echo down a narrow alley,
Dogs roam, searching for morsels to eat.
Dustbins rattle, hunting gains momentum,
inquisitive muzzles, scouring the street.

These are the hours for all things nocturnal,
bats fly, rats scuttle, for their day’s begun.
Nothing’s weird to these wide awake creatures,
only our footsteps will cause them to run.

Night Sky

The night dawned on
The horizon slowly
Enveloping everything
With darkness,
To the pleasure of night's
Creatures which flew out,
Crawled out, for prey,
The sky littered with stars
Like diamonds in darkness
Moon slowly dawning
From nowhere,
With a eerie light,
Showing everything
In its path lesser than
What they really are,
The air filled with music
Of the night's creatures,
Most beings sleeping off
Their routines' tiredness,
Night stayed long enough
Till the sun's rsays
Grorified the eastern
Horizon, saying adue,
To the rest restful, peaceful
Night which many took
Fright, though it's beauty
In darkness is indescribable.

Nocturnal

As the light of day descends
and darkness falls like a shroud
covering everything, in its wake,
the night becomes alive
and the nocturnal creatures awake.

The shriek of an owl
swooping silently on wing,
and the shadows of a bat
silhouetted in aerobatics
under the moonlight.

Struggles of life and death
are hidden from our eyes
when the night becomes alive
and the nocturnal creatures
hunt to survive.

Night Flight

night flying
sneaking in
under the radar

ghostly ethereal
on silver slither
moon night light

unseen unknown
on smudge ink dark
moonless night

traceless trackless
uncharted unlogged
leave no water plowed wake

journey silent unseen
arrival departure unobserved
ghostly galleon sky flight

below rivers cities
myriad anchored lights
laid out diverse clusters

on highways byways
street lights dense
street lights sparse

purpose course direction
plotted charted fixed setting
nothing interrupts salient purpose

Shadow Dancers for M 'lady Amy

The shadow which throughout the day
have hidden quietly away.
In nooks and crannies which they know
Day is their time for lying low.

When darkness falls come out to play.
Although the sunlight rules the day.
The silver moon’s in charge by night
and she has granted them the right.

To freely frolic through the night
they do not fear her gentle light.
Though when the sunrise lights the skies.
They hide again if they are wise.

Perhaps the sleep all through the day
I do not know I cannot say.
I only know it’s my delight
to see the shadows dance at night.

They can appear and disappear
but they are far too fast I fear.
For human eyes to clearly see
the shadows dancing gracefully.

Our eyes accustomed to the light
don’t work efficiently at night.
Though sometimes watching quietly
You see them dancing silently.

a Walk home after dark

Cars speed past
and their lights search
to find direction
in the rush of the city.

The last red rays of the sun
are dying behind
the ridges
and dusk brings
the darkness of night.

I see the lights appearing high
up in the night sky
and they burn,
as it was
from the beginning of time.

I see a new light hanging bright
where I did not see anything
on a previous night
and it gets brighter
and I wonder
if any Unidentified Flying Objects
are watching us?

Or are some countries
flying secret objects of war,
high up in the night sky?

Is this world like a stage
which creatures from
other worlds
watch for the final ends
to appear?

At times I wonder
what judgement waits
on every one of us?

Or if we are just
another speck
in the big scheme of things
and does destiny
just let the pieces fall
as they may?

Two new lights appear
and I hear the jet engines
of a low flying plane
and it disappears in the distance.

Dark shadows fall
from across the street
and I am wary,
but it’s only trees
that moves in the strong wind.

Brighter Darkness

Yes, when the darkness begins to glow,
Then the light of day is become done,
When the light of day becomes corrupt,
The Brighter darkness reigns as day,
Lo, in the corruptness of the day,
The Lone Star Gives the night's sole light,
Tonight, I glow my brightest,
Yes, i am the alphastar,
Oh yes, I am the Alpa comet that luminate's the nights skies

Shadows

The rising of the moon wakes up the shadows
and commands them to emerge from the dark.
The daylight shadows are disappearing fast
with the sparrows the dove and the lark.

As always the light makes way for darkness
as it’s chased from night’s time and space.
The dark shapes seek out those of the light,
at this hour there’s no hiding place.

The shadows of the darkness will not submit,
away from the light they’re there.
Instinctively they wait until it’s eerie
then venture where nothing else dare.

After a night of changing shape and haunting
the shadows themselves feel fear.
The daylight is coming up on the horizon
and the night shadows flee and disappear.

Darkness Of...

Darkness is not the darkness of night
it is the darkness of mind and soul.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of discrimination between poor and rich.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of dishonesty.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of aggravate.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is darkness of corruption.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of indiscipline.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of animosity.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of inveterate.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness of perjury.
darkness is not the darkness of night,
it is the darkness that we all brought up inside us,

In A Swedish Graveyard

After wearisome toil and much sorrow,
How quietly sleep they at last,
Neither dreading and fearing the morrow,
Nor vainly bemoaning the past!
Shall we give them our envy or pity?
Shall we shun or yearn after such rest,
So calm near the turbulent city,
With their heart stilled at length in their breast?

They all sleep with their heads lying westward,
Where all suns and all days have gone down.
Do they long for the dawn, looking eastward?
Do they dream of the strife and the crown?
Each one held a lit taper when dying:
Where hath vanished the fugitive flame?
With his love, and his joy, and his sighing,
Alas! and his youth and his name.

The living stands o'er him and dreameth,
And wonders what dreams came to him.
While the tender, brief twilight still gleameth,
With a light strangely mournful and dim.
And he wonders what lights and what shadows
Passed over these dead long ago,
When their feet now at rest trod these meadows,
And their hearts throbbed to pleasure or woe

What dreams came to them in their living?
The self-same that come now to thee.
If thou findest those dreams are deceiving,
Then these lives thou wilt know and wilt see:
The same visions of love and of glory,
The same vain regret for the past;
All the same poor and pitiful story,
Till the taper's extinguished at last.

All the treasures on earth that they cherished,
Now they care not to clasp nor to save;
And the poor little lights, how they perished,
Slowly dying alone in the grave!
With a flickering faint on the features
Of age, or of youth in its bloom:
Lighting up for grim Death his weak creatures,
In the darkness and night of the tomb,—

With a radiance ghostly and mournful,
On the good, on the just and unjust;
For a space, till the monarch, so scornful,
Turned the light and the lighted to dust.
No taper of earth he desired
In his halls where they quietly rest;
For all those who have toiled and are tired,
Utter darkness and sleep may be best.

A Frost Has Come

A frost has come this night
To visit all the land
A cold death slowly emerges
From the deep darkness
Of a long forgotten dream
The ground beneath the foot
Hardened like a tombs stone
The warm glow of street lights
Catches the shine off the icy path
Unsteady to walk upon
While the open sky above
As vast and beautiful as ever
Leaves the mind feeling small
Oh what words are wanted
To be heard and spoken
To bring company this night
To birth new life once more
In a land cold and dark

Darkness Falls

A blackbird utters its warning call,
As, slowly, darkness begins to fall.
The temperature grows steadily colder,
As the day grows steadily older.

In the houses, lights are being put on,
Now that daylight has almost gone.
Shift workers head out into the night,
While most of us are snuggled up tight.

People head to town for an evening out:
Laughter is heard, as is the odd distant shout.
Cats come out to search and stalk their prey:
Woe betide the creature who steps in their way.

Ducks settle down: Head under their wing.
Small birds have roosted and no longer sing.
Moths flit to and fro around a light.
Bats whizz by silently in their flight.

Small children are being put to bed,
Laying down their sleepy heads.
People settle down to watch the TV,
Hoping that there's something good to see.

The moon shines way up high.
The stars twinkle away in the velvet sky.
Owls come out for their nightly feed,
Hoping to satisfy their hunger needs.

Livestock is rounded up and locked away,
In an attempt to keep the sly foxes at bay.
Spiders come out and crawl about,
Freaking the arachnophobics out.

For hours on end, our world is dark,
Till, by the dawn chorus, first light is marked.
Dawn slowly gives way to daybreak,
And those, who have been sleeping, awake.

While those who have been put to task,
Can head home to their beds at last.
The routine of a brand new day calls,
Until, once again, darkness falls.

How Many Lights Do You See?

How many lights do you see?
How many lights do you see?
There's one to say that night has come
And there's one that guards this jagged shore
And there's one to call the children home
And there's one to light the path they take
How many lights do you see?
How many lights do you see?
There's one to keep the shadows off
And there's one that tells me she got home
And there's one to read his novel by
And there's one that warms this dreary room
And there's one to watch the baby sleep
And there's one to count the blinking stars
And there's one that I just can't forget
And there's one that I remember too
How many lights do you see?
How many lights do you see?
There's one that waits for closing time
And there's one that gets left on all night
And there's one that marks the western sky
And it shines down on the quiet street
And there's one that floods the darker parts
And there's one that hurts my tired eyes
And there's one that says she's not asleep
And there's one that waits for her to wake
How many lights do you see?
How many lights do you see?
There is one that spills out on the beach
And it sparkles on the jetting rocks
And there is one that waits for tired ships
That sleep within this tired port

Unquiet Soul

Why do you write these self destructive verses
Slashing at your unquiet soul in icy solitude;
Crying in your wilderness of angst ridden pain,
There is a bleakness to your life that cools the sun,
Blankets you in shades of your own misery,
To live in the blackness of the inky night.
Hopeless you are, blind to the light, deaf to loves call.
Let me open your cage, illuminate your night,
Bring you into the joyfulness life.
Awaken you from your long sleep with a tender kiss
Warm you in the gentle heat of my love
Bring you into the light and set you free.

That One Blue Candle

(danny okeefe/vince melamed)
Turn out the light
Darkness makes me sentimental
Warm breeze wraps around us
And theres comfort in your voice
On second thought
Please leave on that one blue candle
Life reveals your secrets
And it gives my eyes a choice
All the shadows dance upon the walls
Love is all thats left to say
As the glow from that one blue candle
Softly lights the way
And tomorrow when the world returns
And the shadows of the night depart
Will the light from that one blue candle
Still be burning in our hearts?
By candle light
These moments slowly melt together
And well make love last forever
This time its only us
All the shadows dance upon the walls
Love is all thats left to save
As the glow from that one blue candle
Softly lights the way
And tomorrow when the world returns
And the shadows of the night depart
Will the light from that one blue candle?
Still be burning in our hearts
Still be burning in our hearts
Still be burning in our hearts

Wait For The Blackout

Dont you ask me to come out
Out when the sun does shine
Gonna stay here with curtains drawn
In darkness youll be mine
Lets wait for the blackout
The lights are too bright
Lets wait for the blackout
Wait for the night
Well welcome to my basement flat
No windows to see through
With darkness closing in, my friend
We both know what to do
Lets wait for the blackout
Wait for the night
Lets wait for the blackout
The lights are too bright
Yea!
Lets wait for the blackout
The lights are too bright
Lets wait for the blackout
Wait for the night
Come roam with me upon this earth
Keep us both alive
Know everything has lasted here
And neer would survive
Lets wait for the blackout
The lights are too bright
Lets wait for the blackout
Wait for the night
In darkness there is no sin light only brings in fear theres nothing to corrupt the eyes there is no vision here at first you may find it strange but do not go away the darkness holds a power that you wont find in the day there is no vision here (repeat)

Night Roamer

That hateful sun
With rays that burn and blister

With light that wakes a sleeping world
A peaceful world

And once awoken
The fights break out

The war spreads
Because of that hateful sun

I am a creature of night
Night is when I roam

Beneath the moon
I am my strongest

The stars comfort me
The dark soothes my burns

The night flowers
Bloom at my touch

The Nocturnal
Are my people

And when that sun shines
It hides my stars

Covers my moon
My flowers sleep

The creatures of my kingdom
Flee with the fading darkness

Only to reappear at
Twilight

That sun
With rays of fire

Slowly kills

The significant sun

The glow grows by day
And the plants make food
Flowers bloom
Lovers meet
Nighttime heat
The sun shines not at night but
But by day

The birds of the air
Chirp a melody
Whistling and fooling
For the curious to see
Why they play
The sun shines not at night
But by day

He hides his glow
Cause he cannot bear to see
The fright of the dark night
And the rays are no more there
Instead cold, musty air
Cold as the heart of the night
Brought about by no light
The sun shines not at night
But by day

Joyful laughter emerges faces
Greeting the bright mourning
Leaving the eerie night behind
The sun brings hope
The night brings fright
And the innocent hearts
Too fragile to bear the sight
Closes its eyes and wishes
For light
The sun shines not at night
But by day

There is a light

There is a light
That lights the night
When it’s too dark to see
It’s by my bed
For me and my Ted
My teddy bear and me
We like the light
That lights the night
On that we both agree
It feels soft and safe
Warm and nice
A lovely thing to see
When we awake
The light no longer do we need
Because it’s too light for the light
That lights the night
But the light,
is still needed indeed.

Halloween Evening

The moon was lost behind a cloud
When something weird went by
I tried to see what it was
But it flew so fast and high.

I don'tbelieve in witches
But that is what I saw
Sailing high in the sky
On broomsticks made of straw.

The stars were gone the night was dark
When something else took place
I couldn't quite believe it
There was a gruesome face.

A skeleton with corpse like face
I viewed it in awe
I don't believe in zombies
But that is what I saw.

The howls and cries
Under the moons eerie light
A master of changing shape
With one infectious bite.

I don't believe in werewolves
But that is what I saw
Walking down the street
With blood stained jaw.

Another creature of the night
With fangs dripping red
A piercing bite upon your neck
Then you are bled.

I don't believe in vampires
But that is what I saw
Lurking near the graveyard
When the moon was low.

All too soon the mellow moon
Lights an empty late night street
Children dreaming, planning, scheming
For next years trick or treat..
