One Kite

I watched a paper kite in colours dressed,
go climbing high into the clear warm air.

It soared way up, and as it so progressed,
my whole mind very soon became aware,
of feelings, so downhearted and depressed,
that suddenly I started to compare,
my staid and stagnant life, which had compressed
into a nonentity,
with that of my quite perfect love affair,
now gone forever.

My spirit was possessed
with such a lightness,
that I felt no more despair,
for life was opened wide to me, and blessed,
by a confidence, that was so extraordinaire.

One kite had lifted up my soul and had impressed
on me, to stand four-square,
and take the chance and no longer be suppressed,
but fly with the wind, just like a solitaire.*

* A solitaire is a mainly grey American songbird of the thrush family.

Flying High

My oh my!
What a gorgeous day to fly
Let's release that puffer kite
High in the crystal clear blue sky

We're running out of string
Send that kid on his bike
To the hobby shop to get more
What do you mean, what for?

Why, to fly that kite
Beyond the clouds, earth and universe
The wind is perfect today
We can do this beyond the moon and stars

oops! string broke over passing cars
Where is it now?
Where the past kite fliers now fly
My, oh my!
How high, this kite did, fly

to connect himself to God

to make this divine connection
from his human
ity

he writes a poem about a kite that a child makes
from sticks and paper
and some paste
to stick them in together
like a symbolism
of body and soul

and the child puts the paper tail
as rudder
of this kite and then he runs to the field

to find the wind to give his kite a lift
to the skies

high spirited like his soul
and his body
wanting to be with
God up there

after this i will ask him,
the child
(or the child in him)

or simply him the man who who writes a poem about a kite
lifting itself up with the wind of his beaufiful words:

do you feel something divine?
was there something divine in this poem about a kite?
did you feel God?
did you see him up in the skies above?

you tell me about angels, now tell me, my friend
about the presence of God

tell me more, about this kite this flight this wind
do not mention anything about power

i am always this suspicious believer.

The Kite The Wind Took As If A Poem

You bought the kit,
couldn’t wait for Mum to clear the table
to spread its bits and pieces out

didn’t your Dad help you? Yes, of course –
those were the good times..
‘your Dad’… do we ever really realise
they had a life of their own,
not merely extras in the drama
of your life?

the wooden struts cut to length,
the careful, don’t hurry Michael cotton wound
around the glue, and then more glue,
put the top back on again Michael
or you’ll be sorry when you come to use it again…
what’s again, in a boy’s life? …

that special waterproofed paper
finally in place; Mum’s hair-dryer
cautiously used to tauten
the bright kite’s sail
not too near Michael,
read the instructions…

it’s alive now, the kite,
the two of you waiting
to learn about wind, even
what you thought a mere light breeze…

what strength! on that first outing
on the beach or in the park;
the mere light breeze
which as your kite sailed up there in the sky,
dipping, soaring around the other kites
like a half learned, half graceful dance
which the wind wrote

but you did not listen fully to:
a sudden pull of wind, a parting
somewhere between string and kite…

no longer your kite; now
it’s the wind’s kite
sailing off into the blue
to meet the clouds perhaps

was it your Dad, after
he too had been silent-sad,
or was it Mum as she wiped your face who said

the wind, the sky, loved it too much
to give it back

and so with poems.
Throw away the box and stuff
but keep the glue, it may, like memory,
come in useful
next time

and so with poems.
The wind, the sky,
deserve them for their own;
they can go further, faster, they’re more strong
than you;

let go the string, now, as it falls to earth;
watch the bright kite
till it's out of sight;
was it ever yours?

And For All My Questions My Friend Has An Answer

you have seen the kite flying in the air
and you believe it
you have not seen the wind but you feel it just the same and you name it
as the wind
and you accept it as the wind that exists in reality
because it lifts the kite

i feel God like the wind, i see myself like the kite
there is this divinity that sticks on the stick and string and paper
lifting me up
like a child to the skies above

i do not have power
it is the wind which has it and the wind has it because the owner of the wind
has bestowed up it the power
yes the wind that you do not see but you just feel

my friend, i am not ashamed to tell you about angels
neither am i ashamed to tell you about the existence of the owner of the angels

He is our God and He loves us
why do you insist on flying away like a bird?
why?

believe and be loved
love and learn to love some more, and be a believer forever

Life Affair

(gardner cole/matthew garey)
Were off to the right start
Put your hand on my heart
Feel it beat with sweet intention
Dont tell me sit tight
Im too excited tonight
Every touch takes me to heaven
Got so much love inside, you know were gonna make it
Come here and turn the key, unlock all this extacy
Lets start a life affair
We have no time to spare
To show how much we care
Come on now lets start a life affair
You know Ill be right there
We make the perfect pair
High as a kite now
Ive got perfect sight now
I can see beyond forever
Its gonna be just you and me boy
Every day a new joy
Loving more than we can measure
So many dreams out there,
I know where we can find them
Cant wait a minute more,
Youre all Ive been waiting for
Lets start a life affair
We have no time to spare
To show how much we care
Come on now lets start a life affair
You know Ill be right there
We make the perfect pair
Dancing together this dance that lasts forever
Never been so in love
Eyes bright and open, a thousand new emotions
Raining down from above
Lets start a life affair
We have no time to spare
To show how much we care
Come on now lets start a life affair
You know Ill be right there
We make the perfect pair

Patanjali - for Alison

The boy Patanjali,
flying his kite in the breezy Thiramurti hills
one day cut the thread; the kite
sailed over the hills upon the wind;

asked why he had done that,
the child had no answer;
only his future life
and yoga sutras.

The kite was silent, dancing in its joy;
we, that joyful kite.

I have a kite

a kite fly too high, is but a dream to see
see it with me, fly it to see, feel it
with me, all are just the way to
be with me

a kite flies, lies a tie that flies

a wonderful kite, soar high above to
the sky so high, surfing to the heaven
it see

a kite that brings, the thing to be,
brings it with me

a day that i know, where it go, hold
me so dearly, and leave with me
for that kite that fly is me....

High As A Kite

I'm high high high as a kite
I'm high high high as a kite
And I just might try and do it tonight
But only when the time is right
I'm low low low as you go
I'm low though I've been here before
If I go any lower you know
I'm gonna tell you that the time is right
I thought today the grey would all go away
That the blue was there so roses were red
But instead the red has gone to his bed
Oh no
I'm high high high as a kite
I'm high high high as a kite
And I just might try and do it tonight
But only when the time is right
Yeah I just might try and do it tonight
But only when the time is right

How Do You Expect This Kite To Fly In The Wind?

my friend, how do you expect this kite to fly in the wind

its long tail is disconnected from its body like a tree without roots
its paper is thin, its skeletons too soft to stand against the wind

how do you expect to live in freedom,
on uncut navels, on shallow disappointments, on shaky guts,
my friend, to live in freedom
like the kite, we too must go against the wind
the stronger winds against us are much better
much wanted
we shall then fly so high against the wind that gives us the lift

and when we gain the heights
up there, we look on all the things
so little before us

The Kite-Part 1

I once was the kite, a beautiful, flying kite
I soared the sky, I dipped and swooped with all of my might
You were the tree, my tree, growing tall inside my yard
Growing tall and healthy, your strength mighty and hard
One day, unknown to all as to why, I got stuck
Stuck on your highest branch, freedom was no luck
The longer I was there, the more entangled I became
Tighter and tighter, knotted in my prison-like game
With every sharp wind, from every sharp word from you
I wrapped around more and more, as your ugly words blew
A tangled mess so bad, I was left atop this tree
This relationship tree I once depended upon, now traps and keeps me
Through storms of bad fights, your emotional wind blows
I get whipped and battered, around in knots my life goes
During angry weather, my body gets ripped and beat
Thrashed against this tree, where branches were my treat
The shade the leaves offered me, when the days were bright
Now is dark with mystery, keeping in secret the life of my kite
I am still there, for all to everyday see, although my color is gone
Faded and weathered, ripped and torn, endlessly trapped, I hang on
Oh how I want to be that flying kite again
Guided and held by trusting hands of way back when
To fly high and be free, through the sky I would go
How and why my flights changed, I might never know

Solitaire

(words & music by neil sedaka - justin cody)
There was a man, a lonely man
Who lost his love, thru his indifference
A heart that cared that went unshared
Until it died within his silence
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
Hes playing solitaire
And keeping to himself, begins to deal
And still the king of hearts is well concealed
Another losing games comes to an end
And deals them out again
A little hope goes up in smoke
Just how it goes, goes without saying
There was a man, a lonely man
Who would command the hand hes playing
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
Hes playing solitaire
And keeping to himself, begins to deal
And still the king of hearts is well concealed
Another losing games comes to an end
And deals them out again
And solitaire is the only game in town
And every road that takes him, takes him down
While life goes on around him everywhere
Hes playing solitaire

Kite

Come up and be a kite
Beelzebub is aching in my belly-o.
My feet are heavy and Im rooted in my wellios.
And I want to get away and go
From all these mirror windows.
I look at eye level, it isnt good enough.
And then I find it out when I take a good look up.
Theres a hole in the sky with a big eyeball
Calling me:
Come up and be a kite,
On a diamond flight!
A diamond kite, a diamond kite.
Ooh, what a diamond!
A diamond kite
On a diamond flight.
Over the lights, under the moon.
Over the lights, under the moon.
Over the moon, over the moon!
I feel a rush along my body, like a bullet.
Im 2-d after a push-and-pull feeling.
And I want to get back to safe home:
I love the homeland dome.*
I got no limbs, Im like a feather on the wind.
Well, Im not sure if I want to be up here, at all.
And Id like to be back on the ground,
But I dont know how to get down--down--down!
Come up and be a kite,
On a diamond flight!
A diamond kite, a diamond kite.
Ooh, what a diamond!
A diamond kite
On a diamond flight.
Over the lights, under the moon.
Over the lights, under the moon.
Over the moon, over the moon!

An Adult and an unforgettable Summer

Gentle wind blows
And weak leaves fall
Autumn peeps overall.
He gazed at a far away kite
That idles in the Western sky.
Oh! It's like his bygone summer
Gone with the wind quicker.
The same wind comes again
And where do you want to take him now?
His grandson draws a red kite in a pale blue sky with pastels
While sitting on the threshold.
It's almost an unforgettable summer
And his faintly kite never seen forever.

* I humbly dedicate this poem to the 9/11 innocent victims and their weeping families.

Solitude/solitaire

Lying here thinking of a place to hide
Ive got to get away
There are times like this when Im better off by myself
Stuck in a corner
Nothing more to lose, Im a goner
Im just chained by thoughts, surrounded by walls
And theyre closing in around me
Lying here waiting for the chance to run
I need to isolate
There are times like this when Id rather be left alone
Caught in a panic
Trying not to look like a manic
Got to move, got to go
Got to get out of here
Leave this all behind me
(chorus)
Solitude, solitaire
No one will ever find me there
Solitude, solitaire
Wont you give me some bread, give me some water
Solitude, solitaire
No one will ever find me there
Got to find peace of mind, clear the air
Mass confusion
Leaving me with no solution
If you find Im asleep, better leave me alone
Ill wake up when its over
Chorus
Chorus
Wont you give me some bread, give me some water
Got to find peace of mind, clear the air

Perfect Part 2

I don’t need perfect cloth
I don’t need perfect hair
What I need is a confidence

I don’t need perfect score
I don’t need perfect job
What I need is a support

I don’t need perfect word
I don’t need perfect dream
What I need is a chance

I don’t need perfect agreement
I don’t need perfect control
What I need is a solution

I don’t need perfect holiday

Through Thick or Thin Lips

I was told to go fly a kite.
Believing I would be slighted,
By this directive.
That's exactly what I did.
I flew that kite to heights unknown.
After holding on tightly to the cord...
I soared.

And grateful was I for the advice.
Normally I would have felt insulted.
Quickly to argue.
To heat into conflict...
With those prepared to ignorantly fight.

But as the old saying goes...
Through thick or thin lips,
It pays to listen.
You never know who God wants to use...
To deliver a message.
Only when the mind is closed...
So are the doors to clarity.
