Budding Ballerina
I was once a 'budding' ballerina,
With all the right outfits to wear,
There never was anyone keener,
I had point shoes and tutus to spare.
I was four and a half when I started,
Even remember my first big exam,
It's funny how some things just stick in your head,
I had to go in by myself, and leave Mam.
We'd practice so hard for our teacher,
Sometimes four or five times a week,
And although she was a bit of a preacher,
From us all, sheer perfection she'd seek.
At eleven, I travelled to London,
And danced in the Royal Albert Hall,
In the massive arena, we were called upon,
To perform. We hoped no one would fall.
As the audience were watching intensely,
At us children in costumes so rich.
Oh! How we enjoyed it immensely,
And it all went off without one hitch.
Now each time the hall comes on TV,
I'm reminded of when I was there,
An amazing experience, believe me,
Being under all that spotlight glare.
At eighteen, it ended, such regret,
I hung up my point shoes for good,
But I'll never forget, a great pirouette,
Or a plie, and I don't think I should!

I too, have got shoes
Have you seen shoes on children here
No shoes for other children
No shoes for your children
My uncle said to my dad
I lost my shoes—small shoes
from then on
My feet crushed the thorns
from then on
The city was taken from me
But not me from the city
from then on
Many years later my shoe remover died
And I got back my shoes
Bigger shoes—for crushing thorns
from then on
I cat walked in them
And went to bed in them
from then on
I got the city back
Even when I stayed there
from then on
Believe me I too have got shoes
And I slip my feet in them
But not for sleep anymore
Yes I too have got shoes
Other children wear shoes
My children wear shoes
Wear shoes why not
Why not why not why not why not
Shoes in the cot
Shoes to school
Shoes to the market
Shoes to the office
Why not wear shoes

Roy orbison
Almost eighteen a lot of sugar and lace
Almost eighteen with an angel face
She says Im her kind of guy
And if I leave her shell die uh uh
Ill flip upside down and all the way around
Im acting like a clown because I think Ive found
The cream of the crop, I know Ill never stop
Full skirt, dont flirt, ballerina shoes
Pin slips, two lips that never sing the blues
Almost eighteen, a ribbon in her hair
Almost eighteen, my babys young and fair

Because, oh I love her so, oh-oh

Christmas Carol Singalong
(Every Christmas, I go to the Christmas Carol Singalong at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Jonathan Cohen, and I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the event.)
I love going to the Royal Albert Hall for the Christmas Carol Sing-along.
It attracts a really large audience – some five thousand people strong.
Before the concert begins, there’s excited anticipation in the air,
And, there are plenty of cheerful, smiling faces, everywhere.
On stage, there’s a large orchestra and a smartly clad choir,
And there’s the promise of singing to your heart’s desire.
There’s well known Christmas songs old and new,
And all your favourite Christmas carols mixed in to.
Sometimes, just the orchestra get to do their thing,
And sometimes, just the choir stand up and sing.
There’s also a guest singer who sings a few songs,
But, with the majority of songs, we get to sing along.
On the pacier numbers, the choir move to the beat,
Clapping their hands together and shuffling their feet.
There’s usually a piano solo which requires nifty fingers.
I watch in total awe and my amazement always lingers.
They certainly look like they’re having great fun.
The festive cheer you experience there is second to none.
Everyone dons festive Santa hats during the second half,
And everyone looks like they’re having such a great laugh.
At some point, a Mexican wave usually begins,
And losing their inhibitions, everybody joins in.
There are often some shout-outs to people in the crowd,
And they respond with a wave and cheer very loud.
There’s a party spirit all round the Hall,
And everybody really is having a ball.
The whole concert is joyous and very fast paced
And is guaranteed to light up even the glummest face.
On stage, there are two huge Christmas trees, brightly lit.
Everything about this concert proves to be a massive hit.
Full of cheer, everyone claps and sings along in their seats.
Going to the concert makes my Christmas totally complete.
When the choir sings ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’, you know,
That the concert is drawing to a close and it will soon be time to go.
You leave the Hall feeling full of joy and Christmas cheer,
Ready to repeat this wonderful experience again next year.

Singing For Change
Before we begin, the audience chatters.
In the nearby café bar, cutlery clatters.
Stood on the stage, I look all around,
Taking in all the sights and the sounds.
With so many watching, I feel slightly shy,
But my spirit within, is soaring so high.
I open my mouth, and I sing out real loud.
Our concert has drawn a really big crowd.
The hall we are in, is a massive space.
We watch our Conductor keeping pace.
Our choir sings out many a great song.
A couple of times, I sing a note wrong.
There is a real bright sparkle in my eyes.
The joy within my heart begins to rise.
The smile on my lips, I just can't hide.
Singing with Voicelab, I feel such pride.
As a choir, we all sing out together as one.
It is hard work, but it is also really good fun.
We sing some classical; we sing some pop.
I want to keep singing: I don't want to stop.
The power of song ignites my inner light;
The aura around me burns so very bright.
I love it when my mind feels this way.
If only I could do this every single day.
At the end of each song, we get applause.
We leave the audience wanting some more.
I desperately don't want the end to come.
Afterwards, the songs, I continue to hum.
When our performance is over and done,
I want to do it all again: I want a re-run.
The Royal Festival Hall, we later leave,
Pleased with all that we have achieved.

French Shoes
He was a good lookin guy
Stood about six foot three
Long brown hair
As nice as he could be
Everybody liked him
But he didnt have a clue
He looked silly as hell
In those funny french shoes
You know the type
Without any heels
Leather soles
Kind of a slip on deal
He was cavalier
Whether hed win or lose
But he looked silly as hell
In those funny french shoes
I know its not right
To judge a man by his clothes
By the way that he looks
Or the people he may know
Im embarrassed to say
If I had to choose
I could never really trust
Any man wearing those funny french shoes
Funny french shoes
Funny french shoes
No man should be wearin
Those funny french shoes
They look good on a womans foot
I must say that they do
But no guy should be wearin
Those funny french shoes
Get some socks on, man!

Halloween
Halloween was getting near-she didn’t know
What her children would wear.
So many costumes- so many super hero s
She could dress her daughter as Cleo
And her son as Nero.
Maybe as cat woman and batman
That sounds like a perfect plan.
Well! Halloween shops here I come
I won’t have peace until they’re done.
As shoppers- we know that the malls can be tough
Five hours of shopping is just not enough.
They finally find the costumes they seek
What it costs- is my paycheck for a week.
The cost of costumes have gotten out of hand
I think we parents should take a stand.
What’s happened to those days when children
Used to say: “trick or treat, something sweet
Anything for Halloween.”
And parents used to make the costumes
For them to wear- and the toys
And gifts, the children would share.
Life was so much simpler then
When on each corner you’d find a friend.
Now it has become so commercialized
That parents no longer try
To go back to the days of old
When costumes were made and not sold.
Witches and goblins, black cats and such
Frankenstein and the mummy had quite a touch.
These were things that a parent could do
But times have changed, so it’s up to you.

Lourdes 2006
Jimmy opened his suitcase in the room
at Lourdes and said Oh no there's molasses
all over the clothes and shoes and I've got
a whole week here and he sat down in a chair
his head in his hands saying What have I done?
What am I going to do for clothes now? you
went over and looked in and sure enough
the molasses were over his clothes and shoes.
What am I going to do? he said and you said
Leave it to me Jim I'll sort it and you went through
the clothes taking out the items untouched
by the molasses and set them aside on the bed
and then carried the suitcase of black sticky items
Into the washroom and there one by one you carefully
washed them through with soap and water until
they were clean and smelt of soap and fresh air
and all the while 94 year old Jim sat in a chair
watching with his eyes watery and jaw hung loose
seeing the black water run down the wide plughole
and once it was done you wrung the clothes out
like your mother used to do when you were a kid
and hung them out on the balcony on the small
clothesline and placed the washed out black shoes
by the outside wall to dry out in the hot afternoon
sun and Jimmy came over and stood on the balcony
with one hand on the rail and the other on his stick
looking over at the Pyrenees in the distance and he
said That was real good of you. I owe you big time
and you stood next to him feeling the hot afternoon
sun on your face and arms and felt good and you
said You owe me nothing Jim I just did what some
good guy would and his watery eyes swept over you
matching the French sky's watery afternoon blue.

Things In My Life
There are things I will never remember
And there are things I will never forget
There are things I will cherish forever
And there are things I will always regret
Well I think that Im in scotland
And Im walking through a forest in the rain
And I wonder if Ill fall in love again
We can never remember the things we always forget
There are things you can buy in a drugstore
There are things you can hang on your wall
There are things you can read in the paper
There are things that do nothing at all
Well I think that Im in scotland
And Im walking through a forest in the rain
And I wonder if Ill fall in love again
We can never remember the things we always forget
Things like polyester pants and shoes dont make it easy to remember
Was it here or yesterday, or wasnt it the 14th of november
Well I think that Im in scotland
And Im walking through a forest in the rain
And I wonder if Ill fall in love again
We can never remember the things we always forget
Well, I think that Im invincible but when I think about it once again
I ask myself is this the way things end?
We can always remember the things we never forget

Come To Life
Everything, everything has come to life again
I have no doubts but the ice got thin
What came too soon was so hard to keep
So full a harvest it was hard to reap
There were times seemed just like the walls would crumble
Shoot from the hip and pray for trouble
Stone-cold sober and a-seeing double
How that midnight band could ramble
Taking mansions and leaving shambles
Remember other times and places
Last nights dance, the glowing faces
All the lights, the shadows in the hall
Seeking higher peaks from which to fall
Remember, we were telling you
That time would stop and nations fall
Now we find the lies come true
Can you tell me, tell me, tell me
What are we to do?
Because the good old days
Those good old days are all dead and gone
Good-bye and bless them all, every one
What was true has passed the test
Just as well forget the rest
Half of what you saw was not yours to know
Let it go.
Everything has come to life again

The Closet
In the closet hung her dresses
and her shoes were on the floor.
She would not wear the dresses now
nor the shoes anymore.
He could not give her clothes away.
He smelled them everyday.
In the closet hung her robes
and nightgowns that were sheer.
She would not wear them in the nights,
her nights no longer here.
He could not give them all away.
He fingered them every day.
In the closet he felt close to her
and spoke in whispered word.
'I remember how you looked in these.'
He spoke as if she heard.
'I cannot give your clothes away.
They're all I have of you today.'

Red Shoes
Oh i used to be disgusted
And now i try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain,
That's when i knew that i could not refuse.
And i won't get any older, now the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
I was watching while you're dancing away.
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway.
How come everybody wants to be your friend?
You know that it still hurts me just to say it.
Oh, i know that she's disgusted (oh why's that)
Cause she's feeling so abused. (oh that's too bad)
She gets tired of the lust, (oh i'm so sad)
But it's so hard to refuse.
How can you say that i'm too old,
When the angels have stolen my red shoes.
Oh, i said "i'm so happy, i could die."
She said "drop dead," then left with another guy.
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance.
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence.
Oh i used to be disgusted
And now i try to be amused.
But since their wings have got rusted,
You know, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.
Red shoes, the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

The Shoe Argument....
there is this connection
his feet are too small for the shoes
and he is having a hard
time fitting in
what he expects is something
different
something that someone may
find too usual
the shoes are always thought of
as smaller
than that of the feet
i am thinking of another point
what if we have no feet at all?
and the shoes are all too expensive?
same thing perhaps.

Imagining the Reunion
How long have I been here
A day
A week
I've forgotten what you look like.
How, when we were together
You
and
Me
What was it that you use to say
To get me to laugh that way?
Can you remember?
Nope
Not
Me.
How was it you would look at me
And
I
Understood.
Every day brings something new
And, so does every week.
So, now,
How are you?
Anything new at all?
Me,
I'm not the same person.
I've mended some
From our fall.
The bruises don't bother me
Or the pain
Anymore.
I'm numb now..
And dull now,
And weary of another fall.
So, tell me
What ails you?
Why did you decide to call?
Yea, well, we all wish at times
Things could be different.
But, what's the point of it all?
Can
You
Remember?
Because I managed to forget.
Are you serious
When you ask me
If there are any regrets?
How long have I been here
Not
Too
Long
It sometimes seems..
But what are years to someone
Who is come undone
At the seams.

Hello Big Man
(carly simon/peter wood)
He started a company
When he was a young man
Handsome, and like a reed so tall
With a face like an old photograph
She would fall for him
Fall for him
She would fall
She wore her mothers cocktail dress
With saddle shoes
She was pretty and she was small
She worked the switchboard
Down the hall from him
Down the hall
Chorus:
He said: hello little woman?
She said: hello big man?
And that was how the wooing
And the winning began
He said: hello little woman?
She said: hello big man?
Of course new york in those days
Was carriage rides and matinees
He took her to a ball
At the waldorf astoria
He would fall for her
Fall for her, he would fall
Chorus
You could hear them laugh
As they danced in their room
And the shadows on the avenue
Rose into a jealous moon
Which swung low in the dawn like
To see what was going on with those two
You keep on expecting
Something to go wrong
And nothing does
They still live in the house
Where we were born
Pictures of us kids
Hanging up all over the walls
And some say he built his empire
For wealth and toil
But, if you ask him why
Hell say he did it all for her
All for her
All for her
Chorus

Diving In The Deep End
Some people
Don't worry
'bout nothing
Don't know what's going on
I'm not one
Who can't say they're sorry
I just care what's going on
There's more important things
Than making sure your watch looks just right
And second hand opinions
Don't make you look any smarter
Don't you think
Don't you think
Don't you think that maybe
it's time , yes it's time
Time you started thinking
Time you started thinking
And don't just sweeten up the taste
Brother shoots brother
But meanwhile you're fixing up your face
You're not affected by the truth
Unless it's on your doorstep
Deodorise your paradise
No point in getting crazy
Don't you think
Don't you think
Don't you think that maybe
It's time , yes it's time
Time you started thinking 'bout things in the back of your head
Someone said before you turn a blind eye
Hear a bell ring sex sells everything
But I don't buy it so don't try it
Sleeping in the small world head in the sand
Better wash your hands , make a new plan
There's more important things
Than making sure your shoes just walk right
Ignore reality there's nothing you can do about it . . .
The clothes you wear don't make the man
It's just another party
(Chorus)

Ballerina
Spread your wings
Come on fly awhile
Straight to my arms
Little angel child
You know you only
Lonely twenty-two story block
And if somebody, not just anybody
Wanted to get close to you
For instance, me, baby
All you gotta do
Is ring a bell
Step right up, step right up
And step right up
Ballerina
Crowd will catch you
Fly it, sigh it, try it
Well, I may be wrong
But something deep in my heart tells me Im right and I dont think so
You know I saw the writing on the wall
When you came up to me
Child, you were heading for a fall
But if it gets to you
And you feel like you just cant go on
All you gotta do
Is ring a bell
Step right up, and step right up
And step right up
Just like a ballerina
Stepping lightly
Alright, well its getting late
Yes it is, yes it is
And this time I forget to slip into your slumber
The light is on the left side of your head
And Im standing in your doorway
And Im mumbling and I cant remember the last thing that ran through my head
Here come the man and he say, he say the show must go on
So all you gotta do
Is ring the bell
And step right up, and step right up
And step right up
Just like a ballerina, yeah, yeah
Crowd will catch you
Fly it, sight it, cmon, die it, yeah
Just like a ballerina
Just like a just like a just like a ballerina
Get on up, get on up, keep a-moving on, little bit higher, baby
You know, you know, you know, get up baby
Alright, a-keep on, a-keep on, a-keep on, a-keep on pushing
Stepping lightly
Just like a ballerina
Ooo-we baby, take off your shoes
Working on
Just like a ballerina

New Times
New times. new times. new times.
Good morning. good morning. good morning.
Im the guard. at one time
This was rather pleasant
The poets they still had to muse
Over the classicism of clean shoes
But who today still knows a button stick
Well, thats the new times
Thats the new times
Thats the new times
The girls would lie down before us
First one went dancing, then behind the bushes
Today you have to run through twenty places
Get drunk on saccharin and methyl
And then you still dont get them that far
Well, thats the new times
Thats the new times
Thats the new times
Now take it easy there in the early morning
Who arrives but the brethren from the press
If somewhere there lies a cadaver
Or something is foul in the state
You can be sure that a writer is not far behind
With his excellency I only say:
Hands off the literature
The laurel wreath one gets today
Second hand so to speak
>from the old empires stories
Sold underhand at the alexanderplatz
With all the wigs and costumes
Twitching from the shoulder one is informed
Well, thats the new times
Thats the new times
Thats the new times
New times. new times. new times.

A Lure For The Spotlight
A lure for the spotlight
lies in everyone somewhere.
At some point in our lives,
everyone wants the centre stage
and have the spotlight on them.
Some just dream about it
to pass the time away,
other have a natural gift
and in the spotlight stay.
When the spotlight shines on you
scrutinizing everything you do,
you want it to go away.
You want your life
to go back to the way it was.
However, when the spotlight
has been on you
it will never leave you alone.
It will be with you
for the rest of your days.
