Still Tugs (At The Leash)

i rose from the grave,
and brushed the dirt from my eyes.
i shook the chill silence
from my bones,
and walked through the last door.
i stood on your porch
for the longest time not speaking,
watching the wind blow the curtains,
listening to the creaking of the boards.
we are no more than the last step,
no less than every mile.
your reports of my death
fall on deaf ears...
i can still taste the sweat of god,
can still feel the murmur and the quake.
and when i lie down,
i dont want to be alone!
you can fill the empty grave
with memories and cold tears,
this dog still tugs at the leash!

Could It Be The Wind? (For Dave)

is it then the wind,
that rattles the pane?
causing the candle to flicker,
the curtains to walk?

could it be the wind,
making shapes of shadow?
and that long shaking moan
you feel in your bones?

the wind that whispers
in voices almost remembered.
that tugs at the door
to your forbidden room?

that taste of blackness
from an empty cup?
could it be the wind,
or something more?

The Sadness of The Empty Home

The light flickers on
Illuminates the empty hallway
The thud, click of a door in closing
Brings a silence to the room
A heavy sigh escapes
A look to the mirror sees only
Tired eyes looking back
A bag lain upon the small table
The light turned back off
On route to yet another room
Light creeps through the window
Allowing enough to see
The sound of a running tap
Filling the kettle for a final drink
Keys thrown upon a side
The clatter of cups and spoons
Then further silence
Now the creaking of a staircase
Another door opened
Another light flicked on
The curtains drawn to the world
Drink set beside the bed
The silence of the empty home
Fills the heart with loneliness
A television switched into life
Nothing worth watching
Just a sound there to fill
The silence and the sadness
Of the empty home

Wail Of Poverty

i hear the wail of poverty,
feel the constant pressure
in my chest...
staring with eyes,
hardened and hungry,
looking for a break.
working past the point
of numbness,
sleepless under the weight...
i hear the cries of small children,
with every step i take.
i smell the anger,
and it smells like me,
the cold sweat of desperation.
the bullet phone,
or papers served,
one step from the edge.
i taste the tears
that men dont cry,
and the cold silence
of the women.
the car that wont crank,
the lights shut off,
the eviction notice on the door.
i hear the prayers of poverty,
prayed to a god that doesnt hear.
see the faces, and know the names,
and recognize the footsteps at the door!

Truly, Truly, This Is The End

They say deaths an open door
Into another room
Within the city of the dead
(Our New Kingdom)
They say we walk like dreams
Sharing the same breath
Seeing through the same eyes
(A collective spirit)
As we pray (As we pray)
On his grave (On his grave)
Or words fall and decay (And decay)
As we pray (As we pray)
On his grave (On his grave)
Or words fall and decay (And decay)
They say the Earth it gives no peace
Nor does it take away
We all survive the grave
(Unfortunate eternal)
They say that in times past
A king walked in the sky
Until dethroned by man
(Tribe of Judas)
As we pray (As we pray)
On his grave (On his grave)
Or words fall and decay (And decay)
As we pray (As we pray)
On his grave (On his grave)
Or words fall and decay (And decay)
Truly, truly, this is the end
Truly, truly, this is the end
Truly, truly, this is the end
Truly, truly, this is the end
It's not the same
I'm plagued with pain and I can't let go
It's not the same
I'm plagued with pain and I can't let go
It's not the same
I'm plagued with pain and I can't let go
It's not the same
I'm plagued with pain and I can't let go
This is the end

The Longest Night

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
- only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs, -
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
(wilfred owen, 1918)
Now the day has run
When the cover comes
But any fool can see
Ahead
Silence is my friend
But it has to end
Any fool can see
Ahead
Its the longest night
Its the longest night
Cold winds may blow
On the longest night
So we write our letters
To those far away
Any fool can see
Ahead
The distant sound of thunder
A choir of wailing shells
Any fool can see
Ahead
Its the longest night
Its the longest night
Cold winds may blow
On the longest night
I dont want to fight
I dont know whos right
Cold winds they blow
On this longest night
Its the longest night
Its the longest night
Cold winds may blow
On this longest night

The Infidel!

i am the one
who walked with the Nazarene...
who stood in silence,
listening and watching.
i distributed the food
that fed the crowds,
i helped the sick
make their way to Him...
i stood defiant as He
cleaned out the temple.
i helped move the stone
from the grave of Lazarus...
i shuddered among the lepers,
put down my stone
as He let the whore go...
bailed water in the boat
till He calmed the seas...
i heard His last prayer
at Gethsemene...
saw and felt the tears of blood...
more than anything i wanted Him
to be more, to do more,
maybe i just wanted to be Him!
i am Judas, the infidel...
i am you, you are me!

On a Friend's Escape from Drowning off the Norfolk Coast

Came up that cold sea at Cromer like a running grave
Beside him as he struck
Wildly towards the shore, but the blackcapped wave
Crossed him and swung him back,
And he saw his son digging in the castled dirt that could save.
Then the farewell rock
Rose a last time to his eyes. As he cried out
A pawing gag of the sea
Smothered his cry and he sank in his own shout
Like a dying airman. Then she
Deep near her son asleep on the hourglass sand
Was awakened by whom
Save the Fate who knew that this was the wrong time:
And opened her eyes
On the death of her son's begetter. Up she flies
Into the hydra-headed
Grave as he closes his life upon her who for
Life has so richly bedded him.
But she drove through his drowning like Orpheus and tore
Back by his hair
Her escaping bridegroom. And on the sand their son
Stood laughing where
He was almost an orphan. Then the three lay down
On that cold sand
Each holding the other by a living hand.

The Chill Of An Early Fall

Well her old friend, from her own end of town dropped by today,
And way down deep inside me something died
When he came 'round to see her that way.
Here it comes again, that same old chilly wind
Will blow like a cold winter squall.
And I'll begin to feel the chill of an early fall.
And I'll be drinking again and thinking whenever he calls,
There's a storm coming on, it won't be too long till the snow falls.
Oh I'll be sobersome,
But when October comes and goes and no time at all
I'll begin to feel the chill of an early fall.
Oh how quick they slip away, here today and gone tomorrow.
Love and seasons never stay, bitter winds are sure to follow.
Now there's no doubt, it's gonna be cold out tonight;
I've shivered all day, and when I look in her eyes
Needing to hold her so tight, she just looks away.
Oh she'll swear that it's true, he's just someone she knew
Long ago, and I'll know that's not all,
And I'll begin to feel the chill of an early fall.
Oh I'll begin to feel the chill of an early fall.

Comes A Time

Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says dont you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe.
Dont give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
Only love can fill.
Been walking all morning went walking all night
I cant see much difference between the dark and light
And I feel the wind and I taste the rain
Never in my mind to cause so much pain.
Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says dont you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe.
Dont give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
Only love can fill.
From day to day just letting it ride.
You get so far away from how it feels inside.
You cant let go cause youre afraid to fall,
But the day may come when you cant feel at all.
The words come out like an angry stream.
You hear yourself say things you could never mean.
When you cool down you find your mind.
You got a lot of words youve got to stand behind.
Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says dont you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe.
Dont give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
Only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill.

Kissed by a Rose

Kissed by a rose
With all the thorns
My eyes become large
And I can see a glow
I see you
Standing there by your grave
I walk slowly over to it
I kiss the rose
One more time
But my lips are cut
So my blood drips onto the rose
I plant the rose
On top of your grave
It blooms with red roses
Little droplets of blood
Dripping from the leaves
The light that you shine
Can be seen
You walk to the roses
And your light
Hits the blooms just right
I lay down on your grave
My power
My pleasure
My pain
I feel all of it
At the same time
Ive been kissed by a rose
On a grave

Elizabeth and Albert

Elizabeth wore black hooded gown
red rose in her hand
soft winds blowing all around
she walked the hills through Ivory and heather
to where a gravestone lay
placed the rose upon her loved ones grave
looked out across the sea as tears fell down her face.

She walked the hills everyday
days turned into months
these hills was their favourite place
‘twas where they first met, first kissed, first made love.

Cold winter months set in
single rose in her hand
she walked through windswept heather
strong winds blowing her gown
placed rose upon Albert’s grave
whispers i’ll come back tomorrow
i shall always bring you a rose
my dearest Albert my heart is yours.

As she walked down the stony pathway
through boulders covered in moss
she slipped and fell to her death
died upon rocks
her ghostly image can be seen
walking through the heather
her love for him was so strong
red rose she holds forever.

Darkness Unto Darkness!

'over the hilltops,
silence,
among all the treetops
you hardly feel
a breath moving.
the birds fall silent in the woods.
simply wait! Soon
you too will be silent.'

Goethe

a knock on the door,
Hermes,
the messenger,
come to gather and disperse!

we run like maddened chickens,
to escape the mossy hands
of the grave.
yet time comes, again and again!

all the shiny things
we stuffed into our bags,
fall like empty bells
to the floor.

the dogs of passion
like the festered wound.
the nest of straw
blown away by the wind!

flesh returns to dust,
leaving bones to testify.
the echoes of loving
haunt the stillness.

darkness unto darkness!

He Is Risen #2 (Bible Poems for Children)

Now in the sixth hour darkness
filled the earth, in the ninth
hour, JESUS cried in a loud
voice, 'MY GOD, MY GOD why
hath thou forsaken me

Crying again, he yielded to
death and the grave. As the
end of the sabbath began to
dawn, toward the first day
of the week.

The two Marys brought spices
to the place where JESUS lay.
There was great earth-quake.
This world trembled on it's axis,
Darkness covered the land.

A loud voice from heaven rumbled
throughout this earth.

'COME FORTH, COME FORTH'
the grave belched, gave way, the
SON OF GOD, stood up and
walked away.

The grave could not contain him.
He had defeated death and hell.
He had risen to live forever in
our hearts.

An angel of the Lord appeared
from heaven. His countenance
alike to lightening, his raiment
white as snow.Speaking in a
loud voice, He has risen, he is
not here. He lives forever more.
Sitting now on the right hand throne
of GOD..

Because he lives I can face tomorrow.

A Secret To Remember

Forever I'll remember you,
Humble your eyes so quaint so blue,
I will forever sit at my window so very true,
Still many memories I have not drew,
I feel so oddly brave,
Still I feel my chest begin to cave,
Even myself im sorry i can not save,
And forever my future will hold a dirt grave,
This promise is not a trick,
And deaths tears soon I must lick,
My final coffin appearence so very slick,
And a story of my death so epic,
They all will not remember,
My death on that cold December,
And a secret so planed and loved so tender,
Is this note you promise to lend her,

Everytime It Rains

I see dark clouds out my window
I know the storm is coming any minute
And the thunder just confirms my fears
And I know the tears are in there
Ill be crying unable to stop
Look here comes the very first drop
cause every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you... I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains... I get wet
Darling I am still in love with you
As time passes by it just intensifies
I know Ill never be with you again
Ill never find another with that kindness in his eyes
Ill be trying unable to stop
Look here comes the very first drop
cause every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you... I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains... I get wet
On sunny days Im all right
I walk in the light
And I try not to think about
The love I live without
But every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you... I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains... I get wet
cause every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you... I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains... I get wet
cause every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you... I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains... I get wet

Up To My Ears In Tears

(alan jackson/don sampson)
You told me you dont love me when you walked out the door
I stood there feelin lonely, then the tears began to pour
What else could I do, Id never felt like that before
So I cried an ol blue river I the middle of the floor
Now Im up to my ears in tears
Im cryin night and day since you went away
The things you used to say, honey, I no longer hear
That waters cold and clear, Im drownin for you dear
Up to my ears in tears
Well I found some old love letters you wrote me years ago
But the words all ran together when the tears began to flow
Cause you left that water runnin, now its got nowhere to go
If I cant wash away your memory guess Ill just go under slow
Now Im up to my ears in tears
Im cryin night and day since you went away
The things you used to say, honey, I no longer hear
That waters cold and clear, Im drownin for you dear
Up to my ears in tears
The waters cold and clear
Im drowning for you, dear
Up to my ears in tears

The Torso Of Strugle

what can the strength do if the sweat
dried up in the palm, like olive oil moisturizes the
joint of every muscle

there could be a space to settle
every knee, than to shout and shoot the enemy
to freeze, perhaps indulge the taste

what then the use of the eyes when darkness
come unexpectedly, the waters is in the
bucket for the cap is empty

give me the table that everybody can touch
than to spell out the ruin of bones
into the grave of eternity
of no return

lead on my friend, the time is there to start...

The Light Of Day

there is a place,
there is a time.
there is a heart,
there is a prayer.
there is a tear,
and arms that rhyme.
there is a day
when somebody cares.

there is something deeper,
we dont understand.
that dares to touch,
and breaks the shell.
there is something more,
than castles built of sand.
that you cant take,
cant buy or sell.

the strangers touch,
in the rose that blooms.
in the child that's crying,
the man near death.
tis the face of god,
in the empty room.
in the sweat and dirt,
and in every breath.

what we dont know,
but our hearts abide.
what we cant see,
but our souls can taste.
you cant live life
if you're afraid to die.
in the darkness of night,
the light of day!

Dont Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger

(harris)
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look trough the eyes of a fool
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Somebodys watching when the light goes down
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look trough the eyes of a fool
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Somebodys watching when the night comes down
Feel someones watching you
You gotta get away
Is it the first time
Youve ever felt this scared
Feel the adrenaline pump
Your heart begins to race
Begin to run now
The sweat runs down your face
Dont know which way to turn
Youd better hide yourself
Hes getting closer now
Youd better improvise
Just hope you never reach
The point of no return
Could be the last time
You see the light of day
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look trough the eyes of a fool
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Somebodys watching when the night goes down
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look trough the eyes of a fool
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Somebodys watching when the light goes down
Dont look to, dont look to
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
Dont look through the eyes of a fool
Dont look to the eyes of a stranger
