Six O'Clock News
he sat in the parking lot,
a Vietnam vet, breathing hard,
fog rising in the cold....
across the way two kids
were getting ready to raise
the flag... just another day....
they'd been married for 30 years.
he met her when he was thirty,
and she was just sixteen....
now he was over sixty,
and his health was bad....
and she'd been fooling around
with a man her own age.
he just couldnt see, just couldnt
believe... nowhere to go.
he watched her walk from the
building to her car, fumbling with keys.
walking up behind her, he called
her name... she turned, a look of horror,
just a deer caught in the headlights.
he pulled the pistol and shot her....
before her body even fell
he put the barrel in his mouth,
and fired again....
the two kids stopped, flag
at about half mast.... sunlight
barely piercing the fog....
America dead, two bodies strewn
in a parking lot... another feed
for the six o'clock news!

This Is Not Your Country
Road blocks and fire
Barb wire upon barb wire
This is not your country
Armoured cars, corrugated scars
Grafitti scrawls:
This is not your country
Home sweet fortress
Gunshot - we hate your kind
Get back !
This is not your country
I need some air
And Im stopped and repeatedly questioned:
Born and raised ?
But this is not my country
Were old news
Alls well
Say bbc scum
One child shot, but so what ?
Laid my son
In a box, three feet long
And I still dont know why
A short walk home becomes a run
And Im scared
In my own country
Were old news
Alls well
Say bbc scum
Everybodys under control
Of our surveillance globes
Were old news
Alls well
And thirty years could be a thousand
And this peugeot ad
Spins round in my head
British soldier pointing a gun
And Im only trying to post a letter
A short walk home becomes a run
And Im scared, and Im scared, I am scared
Old news
Alls well
Bbc scum

Zip up your mouth
Zip up your mouth
Youve got more than the dead, so zip up your mouth

I Too Mourn The Dead!
i too mourn the dead...
the victims of bullets,
preordained by message.
the blown and splintered bodies,
strewn in nameless disarray.
the guilt pills of generals,
swallowed with patriotic vodka.
but too the carcass of the dog,
blindsided by the truck.
and the small bird beneath the tree,
whose wings froze and failed.
the stray cow that fell,
and couldnt get up.
the tree cut and felled,
to widen the road.
the mountain blown asunder,
to make way for progress.
the thousands of fishes,
choking to death on oil.
the river stopped and stagnant,
filled with raw sewage....
the young boy's body hanging,
at the edge of bullied taunts.
the girl on the corner,
selling her body for a rock
the businessman dying,
with every numb decision.
the body of the old woman,
barely breathing in a bare room.
the child sick and shaking,
dying of hunger...
the baby in the dumpster,
nothing else needs said...
and the apathetic faceless mouths,
devouring the poor....
i too mourn the dead, and the dying...
and see their faces,
in the palm of my hand!

Chesterfield King
We stood in your room and laughed out loud.
Suddenly the laughter died and we were caught in an eye to eye.
We sat on the floor and did we sit close. I could smell your thoughts and thought. do you want to touch a lot like me? too scared to say a thing. I left your house and kicked myself. I put those
Ings on a shelf to die. I guess Im not a gambling type but think of what the two of us had lost.
Had lost.
I needed some time to think it out. 7-eleven parking lot. a toothless woman turned and stopped. I gave her a dime and a chesterfield. she leaned down and kissed my cheek. I was scared but it fel
Et.
Felt so sweet.
She asked me if I had a name. I told her I was glued up on some chick. we sat and smoked against the wall.
Drank a beer, felt the chill of fall.
Of fall.
I took my car and drove it down the hill by your house. I drove so fast. the wind it couldnt cool me down, so I turned it around and came back up. you were waiting on your step, steam showing o
Ur breath and water in your eyes. we pulled each other into one, parkas clinging on the lawn and kissed right there.
Said all my chicks they smoke these things and handed you a chesterfield king. held your hand and watched tv and traced the little lines along your palm.
Your palm.
I took my car and drove it down the hill by your house.
I drove so fast.
The wind it couldnt cool me down, so I turned it around
And came back up.
You were waiting on your step, steam showing off your breath
And water in your eyes.
We pulled each other into one, parkas
Clinging on the lawn and kissed right there.
Right there.

Tick Tock!
There once was a time
When there was but one,
He came in a sleigh with his bells turned on,
With a long white beard and a fat red pelt
And a tassle and a bobble and a Sam Browne belt!
Just once in the year
He'd appear on high,
With reindeers, winging through the stars in the sky,
And he'd bring all the presents that the kids desired,
They'd send him all their letters in the smoke from the fire.
But the year came round
When it all went wrong,
While singing and a-playing of the reindeer song,
For a boy lay awake while the world was asleep
As Saint Nick clambered down the chimney-piece.
The fairy on the tree
Looked down and around
To the holly and the mistletoe, and then, she frowned!
For the boy sat and listened to the grandfather clock,
As the old clock muttered to the hearth - Tick! Tock!
Then a shower of soot
And the old black boots,
As Santa came a-calling in his old red suit,
But he saw a little movement, hidden by the tree
And he roared -'No presents for the likes of thee! '
He turned to the hearth
To the chimney-piece,
As the boy sprang out with a whimpered: 'Please! '
But the rules had been written by the man in the hood,
'I only leave presents where the children are good! '
The boy thought quick,
He'd heard 'Tick! Tock! '
He opened up the front of the grandfather clock,
Then said, 'That's fine, in a goody-goody home,
But what about the kids who are bad to the bone? '
Then he caught St Nick
By his Sam Browne belt,
Pulled him off his balance in his old red pelt,
Then stuffed him in the front of the grandfather clock
That had muttered to the blinking of the tree, Tick! Tock!
The boy then turned
The key in the lock,
Imprisoned him forever in the grandfather clock,
He took all the presents from the old man's sack,
And once he took the presents there was no going back!
There's no more Santa
And there's no more sleigh
For it got a parking ticket on the very next day,
And the parking inspector set the reindeer free,
For no-one asked the question - 'Where can he be? '
So now there are streets full
Of men in red suits,
With their false white beards, and their fake black boots
With the only real Santa, imprisoned in a clock,
He's jammed against the pendulum, it can't - Tick! Tock!

Just Couldnt Wait
I miss her face, but the girl left seven years ago.
Guess I never shouldve let her go.
Thats how I feel because I love her so.
But Im afraid that she will never know.
She just couldnt wait, she said she couldnt wait til some day.
She just couldnt wait, my baby just couldnt wait, no.
She said she couldnt wait til some day, til some day.
Oh, tell me now, where do the broken-hearted go from here.
You missed her love and now youre steering clear.
I aint afraid of nothin but my fear.
The fear that she might see this rollin tear.
She just couldnt wait, she said she couldnt wait til sunday.
She just couldnt wait, my baby just couldnt wait, no.
She just couldnt wait, my baby just couldnt wait, no.
Oh she couldnt wait til sunday no, til sunday.
She just couldnt wait, my baby just couldnt wait, no.
She said she couldnt wait til sunday.
She just couldnt wait, my baby just couldnt wait, no.
She said she just couldnt wait.
You know she just couldnt wait, no.
She said she couldnt wait til sunday, til sunday.
Oh, oh...

Conversations Angels And Demons (Part Four)
standing in the middle of a parking
lot, talking to an old man...
he said: 'i've never seen it
this bad... everybody on edge,
struggling, scared...
nobody knows what's going to
happen...
and hell, half of everybody you
meet, or more, taking them damn
pills...'
'yea, they come in here all the
time, middle of the day, whacked out...'
'pills and poverty go together... you
cant make it, cant stand the pressure,
they prescribe you the pills.'
'i think the medical profession got it
started, and it's mushroomed... into
some kind of evil disease.'
'i know a man, worked with him for twenty
years... him and his wife used to come over
and eat with us, play cards... they were
like family.
him and her got to having problems, he started
beating her... found out he was on the pills.'
'what happened to them? '
'well, he lost his job. they lost the house,
pretty much all they had. she left him. he tried
to kill her, but the law stopped him.
i tried to talk to him the other day. he told
me 'he couldnt live without her'...
i told him, 'no, he couldnt live without the
pills'...
tried to talk him into getting some help...
but he wouldnt listen...'
'yea, it's tough. you cant help somebody
that wont admit they need help... the woman
all right? '
'she's working, trying to start over... it's
hard for her...'
i shook his hand, and walked away. pills...
another weapon of ignorance!

Marley Purt Drive
Sunday morning, woke up yawning; filled the pool for a swim.
Pulled down the head and looked in the glass just to see if I was in.
Went up the stairs and kissed my women to make her come alive.
'Cause with fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
Fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids ,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
That's how they are, so I grabbed out the car;convertible fifty-nine.
Headed for the freeway; tried to find the Pasadena sign.
Ten miles and three quarters more I wasn't feeling any more alive.
'Cause with fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
Fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
I used to be a minstrel free with a whole lot of bread in my bag.
I used to feel that my life was real, but the good Lord threw me a snag.
Now I'm gonna be the same as me ,no matter how I try.
'Cause with fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
Fifteen kids and a fam'ly on the skids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
Turned 'round the car and headed for home; I guess I realized my fate.
Ten miles and three quarters more I pulled up outside the gate.
Twenty more kids were stood inside and that made thirty-five.
'Cause with an orphanage full of thirty-five kids,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
An orphanage full of thirty-five kids ,
I got to go for a Sunday drive.
Sunday morning woke up yawning; filled the pool for a swim.
Pulled down the glass and looked in the mirror just to see if I was in .
Went up the stairs and kissed my women to make her come alive.
'Cause with an orphanage full of thirty-five kids ,
I got to go for a Sunday

I Just Couldnt Say No
Written by randy owen, teddy gentry, and greg fowler
Youve got me achin more than I should
My heart is breakin, oh dont it feel good
cause I know for certain, were magic in love
Youve got me hurtin, cause I cant get enough
I just couldnt say no even though I should
Even if I did, wonder if you could
I just couldnt say no when your eyes say yes, yes
I just cant say no, Ive tried my best
The way you tease me makes me want you more
You purr like a kitten but I hear you roar
Your body language is talkin to me
Right here in the darkness, its so plain to see
I just couldnt say no even though I should
Even if I did, wonder if you could
I just couldnt say no, no, when your eyes say yes, yes
I just cant say no, Ive tried my best, I just couldnt say no
I just couldnt say no, no, when your eyes say yes, yes
I just cant say no, Ive tried my best
I just couldnt say no, Ive tried my best
I just couldnt say no

That Look
a young man
walking down the street...
stopped to talk.
out of work roofer
for a coupla years...
doing odd jobs
when he can...
trying to raise
three small children
on about $300 a month,
and food stamps...
he had that look,
you know, that look,
that gonna get shot
crawling in somebody's window...
trying to steal something
to keep them kids a going...
look...
you know that look!

Starting Over Again
(donna summer, bruce sudano)
Mama moved out
Daddy sold the house
They split up the money
And went on their own way
And all the kings horses
And all the kings men
Couldnt put mama and daddy back together again
Starting over again
Where should they begin
cause they never been out on their own
Starting over again
Where do you begin
When your dreams are all shattered
And the kids are all grown
And the whole world cries
He got an apartment
She moved in with her sisters
Hes schemin big deals with one of his friends
While she sits at home sortin out pieces
Of left over memories from thirty odd years
Starting over again
Where do you begin
When youve never been out on your own
Starting over again
Never any end
What will the neighbors say
Theyre talking talk its small town news
Theyre fifty years old wrecking up a happy home
And this far down the road
You find yourself alone
Two fools
Starting over again
Where do you begin
When youve never been out on your own
Starting over again
Never any end
When your dreams are all shattered
And the kids are all grown
And all the kings horses
And all the kings men
Couldnt put mama and daddy back together again

Happy Jack
Happy jack wasnt old, but he was a man
He lived in the sand at the isle of man
The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key
So they rode on his head on their furry donkey
The kids couldnt hurt jack
They tried and tried and tried
They dropped things on his back
And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied
But they couldnt stop jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldnt prevent jack from feeling happy
But they couldnt stop jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldnt prevent jack from feeling happy
The kids couldnt hurt jack
They tried and tried and tried
They dropped things on his back
And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied
But they couldnt stop jack, or the waters lapping
And they couldnt prevent jack from feeling happy

Killing Time
Who is counting sleepless nights
Who is counting letters I meant to write
I said who is counting at all
If you are
I look pretty small
But no matter what I do
If I couldnt call you mine
If I couldnt be with you
Id just be killing time
You went searching for me in the night sky
And when I burned away you wondered why
Well Ill tell you babe I could not bear to stall
I fell too fast I fell too far
But no matter what I do
If I couldnt call you mine
If I couldnt be with you
Id just be killing time
Big big fishes in little ponds
Ive seen them walk around with magic wands
But no matter what I do
If I couldnt call you mine
If I couldnt be with you
Id just be killing time
There aint no magician hidden inside of me
So no matter what you hear I hope you see
That just when Im trying to be tall
Thats when I end up looking pretty small
But no matter what I do
If I couldnt call you mine
If I couldnt be with you
Id just be killing time
No matter what I do
(and you know I will burn)
If I couldnt be call you mine
(like a star in the sky)
If I couldnt be with you
(all Id be doing is)
Id just be killing time
But no matter what I do
If I couldnt call you mine
If I couldnt be with you
Id just be killing time

Part Of America Died
Part Of America Died
Somebody killed a soldier today
And part of America died
The child who shot him won't even be punished
After counsel asks his record not be tarnished
The flag of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried, with him, at his side
Today more of America died
The truck that he rode, was a battlefield too
A respite from a hard day at war
The flag of our nation won't fly at half staff
The purple heart they gave on his behalf
Won't change that a part of America died
Yes, Somebody killed a brave soldier today
It happened this day in a land, far away
While some slept in comfort, at home
A soldier put his life on the line
He answered the call then gave it his all
And on this day much of America died

Kids Wanna Rock
Turned on the radio
Sounded like a disco
Musta turned the dial for a couple of miles
But I couldnt find no rock n roll
This computerized crap aint gettin me off
Everywhere I go the kids wanna rock
London to l.a.
Talkin bout the new wave
For a couple of bucks you get a weird haircut
And waste your life away
Around the world or around the block
Everywhere I go the kids wanna rock
Get me my d.j.
I got somethin hes gotta play
Wanna hear it I cant wait
So turn it up, turn it up...
Kick down the barricades
Listen what the kids say
From time to time people change their minds
But the music is here to stay
Ive seen it all from the bottom to the top
Everywhere I go the kids wanna rock
Around the world or around the block
Everywhere I go the kids wanna rock
Everywhere I go the kids wanna rock

America
(Francis Scott Key)
Oh, say, can you see
By the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed
At the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
Through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched were so
Gallantly streaming?
America, America, America
America, America, America
And the rocket's red glare
The bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there
Oh, say, does that star
Spangled banner yet wave
Over the land of the free
And the home of the brave!
America, America, America
America, America, America
America, America, America
America, America, America
America, America, America
America, America
ooohhh

Finally
Finally daylight enters the room
Like a shy virgin
Undressing for the first time
And you are urged
To get out of bed
And begin the new day
But the bed is rather warm
And the outside air is cold
And so you lay awhile
And think of those cold mornings
You had to get from bed
And go get his breakfast
And get the kids up
And dressed
And breakfasted
And off to school
And still he’d lay there
Snoring and you bringing
His breakfast and saying
Here’s your breakfast
I’ll leave it on the side
And he’d turn over
And mumble sure ok
Now go leave me
In my quiet and peace
And keep those darn kids
From making so much noise
And off you’d go
Tip toeing from the room
And closing the door
With a nervous click
Not wanting to raise his anger
Or feel his fists
And hushing the kids
And making sure
They were ready for school
And trying not to think
On him lying there
As you began
The house chores
And now looking
At the window
Sensing the warmth
Of the bed
And the kids
Grown up and gone
And him rotting some place
Knifed by you
Some years back
Dead.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light
BOY:
I remember every little thing
As if it happened only yesterday
Parking by the lake
And there was not another car in sight
And I never had a girl
Looking any better than you did
And all the kids at school
They were wishing they were me that night
And now our bodies are oh so close and tight
It never felt so good

The Night I Called The Old Man Out
The dining room fell silent
I cant believe what I just said
I just told my dad hes full of it
And I watched his face turn red
And I shouldve said, Im sorry
But I matched him shout for shout
I can still hear that screen door slammin
The night I called him out.
(chorus)
He said, son its gonna hurt me more than it hurts you
But somehow I couldnt help but have my doubts
cause Id seen my old brothers crawl back in the house
Each time they called the old man out.
Fist to fist and eye to eye
Standin toe to toe
He wouldve let me walk away
But I just would not let it go
Years of my frustration
Had let me to this night
Now hell pay for all the times that hes been right.
*chorus*
It was over in a minute
Thats when I realized
The blood came from my mouth and nose
But the tears came from his eyes
And in memory of that fateful night
I know the greatest pain was his
And I just pray some day Im half the man he is.
*chorus*
Just like my old brothers
I crawled back in the house
The night I called the old man out

Our Own Flag
They mustered us up with a royal din,
In wearisome weeks of drought.
Ere ever half of the crops were in,
Or the half of the sheds cut out.
'Twas down with the saddle and spurs and whip
The swagman dropped his swag.
And we hurried us off to the outbound ship
To fight for the English flag.
The English flag, it is ours in sooth
We stand by it wrong or right.
But deep in our hearts is the honest truth
We fought for the sake of a fight.
And the English flag may flutter and wave
Where the World-wide Oceans toss,
But the flag the Australian dies to save
Is the flag of the Southern Cross.
If ever they want us to stand the brunt
Of a hard-faught, grim campaign,
We will carry our own flag up to the front
When we go to the wars again.
